2019-09-27four point play….
1. With the NBA off-season coming to a close, we can finally start thinking about things that don’t entirely make us want to slam our heads in frustration. Yes, fans, the 2019-2020 Cavaliers are likely to be an abject travesty. The talent that the squad does employ is either too old (and/or fragile), too young (and/or dumb), or simply too terrible, (and/or Jordan Clarkson).
We could pretend that this season will be a pleasant surprise. We can imagine potential Cedi Osman strides, Darius Garland 4-pointers, and classic Minnesota Kevin Love box scores. In this theoretical universe, Collin Sexton understands defense, continues to make his open threes, and leads the team via energy and heart.
Mathew Dellavedova comes off the bench to connect with a rejuvenated Tristan Thompson recalling their alley-oop chemistry of years gone by. John Henson continues to expand his range, becoming a poor man’s Brook Lopez.
Jordan Clarkson harnesses his scoring ability by deftly responding to the defense to drop sweet dimes. Kevin Porter Jr. shows that he is the steal of the draft by playing bully ball against smaller guards while swarming on defense.
I get signed to a 10 day contract, throw down on Rudy Gobert, and immediately retire as the greatest Cleveland athlete of all-time.
Yeah, none of those things is going to happen.
More likely, Sexton tries to take more threes off the bounce, thus hurting his overall average and compromising his mechanical stroke. Garland struggles out of the gate as a skinny tween trying to play against men. Cedi plays exactly like he has in recent seasons, aka, occasionally great on D, adequate on O, but in no way an All-Star caliber player.
And, Kevin Love gets traded to a contender near the deadline for some combination of terrible contracts and draft picks.
And that is all okay.
2. Unlike last September, in which I foolishly picked the Cavs to sneak into the Playoffs, I am all-OUT on this particular iteration of Cleveland basketball. The hiring of John Beilein curbed any optimism I might have been able to harness going into this season. The fact Jordan Clarkson remains on the roster officially killed it.
Beilein might end up being a better NBA coach than I anticipate, but the likelihood that he will be anything other than average in his first season is incredibly low. Rookie coaches don’t fare particularly well when they come from other leagues. Being about 120 years-old also doesn’t inspire great confidence.
A buddy of mine recently met Beilein and Darius Garland. His takeaways were not horribly encouraging. He said that Garland is just too small for the NBA and that Beilein expects the team to be terrible.
Yep.
It can be a productive season if the Cavs can follow the Nets’ blue-print from the last few years. Play an actual system, build confidence in guys who may have lost it in previous stops, and trade away anyone who may have decent trade value for flexibility and picks.
If Koby Altman and John Beilein are able to accomplish those things, the season can be a success.
Listen, I love me some Kevin Love. In a different world, it would be wonderful to see the Cavs win about 45 games via smart play and Kevin Love MVP style domination. I don’t even necessarily think he in incapable of putting up such a monster season.
But, the existence of Jordan Clarkson signals to me that the team does not want to win this season. Talk of starting Garland and Sexton together further provides fodder for that sentiment. If that is the case, trade our beloved champion, Love to a team that can really utilize his skills. It would be wonderful to see Kevin on a real contender without having to deal with the LeBron type nonsense.
3. For as terrible as the Cavs’ season is likely to be, the NBA season on the whole should be an absolute delight. Do you have any idea who will make the Western Conference Playoffs? I am really high on Dallas, and they are still almost a lock to finish with the third best record…in Texas.
The East is clearly top heavy, but there is certainly intrigue. None of the 2019 Playoff teams looks to fall out of the race this year. And yet, some teams will.
I strangely like Orlando more than I probably should. They still lack wing talent, but their size is overwhelming. Many of their younger players should be ready to make a leap.
Atlanta made a terrible choice with the Doncic trade, but they do have a lot of young talent. Trae Young and John Collins have them poised to make a Kings like run this season.
4. So yes, I am thankful that basketball is returning. I have had about enough of the mean-spirited interaction that Americans now call “political discourse”.
Here is a cheat sheet for you.
If you make fun of someone’s looks, voice, dress, cultural background, way they move etc, you are not making a political argument. You are just being a (“mean person”). Feel free to insert your preferred term.
A political discussion should focus purely on the ideology at hand.
If you don’t agree with Greta Thunberg’s message, I suggest you read more, but ultimately I respect your opinion, without actively subscribing to it.
But, if you make fun of her person, her face, speaking voice, you are no longer anything but a (insert term of your choosing).
Same goes for Liberals who make fun of Trump’s hair and hands. That does absolutely nothing but make it clear that you are simply not a good dude.
There are plenty of things to discuss heatedly. You can get actively angry at policy and the like. You can scream at another over the incredibly difficult issues our country and world face. But, if that little mean-spirited smirk comes across your face when someone on the news is making fun of another human being, maybe you aren’t as “good” as you think you are. You are just a (insert term).
We can be better.
I’m from Mayfield so I hate it when the truth comes from Mentor. You have to go back a few before you realize there was once a rivalry. And now the US has to learn from Germany because we are the ones drunk on hubris. Ah, the basketball season without Fred. Will AC continue? I’m in DC where they threw Buckhantz away. There should be a gig open in Cleveland. And between these two cities the outlook is at best several years down the road. Maybe I’ll listen to the wisdom of JC (Jim Chones) coming thru on clear channel… Read more »

Anyone see this? NBA Teams are now required to accurately certify player’s ages and HEIGHTS. This will make for a lot of interesting reveals this season.
Ironically it is gambling that brought the need to finally get honest about heights. Anyone wanna make some over/under bets on heights across the NBA?
My source:
https://www.slamonline.com/nba/nba-requiring-teams-to-certify-players-height-and-age/
Kevin Love under 6’9″. Darius Garland under 6’2″. I am very excited about these reveals. We have height’s for guys who did the combine. But guys who avoid we don’t.
JUST WATCHED SOME HIGHLIGHTS OF THE OPENING —–COULDN’T LOCATE YOU JUDE : )—-GIVE US YOUR THOUGHTS ——THINK WE WILL HAVE TO GO WITH ” THE ROCK ” TO SHORTEN IT’S NAME ————THINK EVIL COINED THIS WAY BACK IN APRIL
How would you locate me? Ha, you don’t know what I look like, do you? Lolz…
Anyways, I took some pictures and I’m going to try to finish writing something up tonight, so I’ll share soon. I got some kind of crazy leg injury out of nowhere this weekend, but limping when I walk shouldn’t affect my typing.
Anyone going the the Rocket Mortgage Field House opening today? (God that a pain to write instead of “the Q”).
Ill be there and attempting to do some coverage for C:tB.
Let me know if any of you will be around?
The difference between Greta & Trump is that HE goes around and calls people names & makes fun of them on a regular basis and ispires violent acts to boot. He (or his supporters) have no ground to stand upon in terms of mean comments. They love HIM anyway. For some, BECAUSE of the slurs/racism. I mean, yeah, we should all try to be better. But the admirable sentiment rang as bothsiderism to me. Maybe my ears are off. I mean, so under those rules of engagement, saying Trump is racist/Putin’s puppet is OK but making fun of his orangeness… Read more »
Yes, well almost…. By attacking Trump’s hair and stupid things like that, people are giving him a win. Every time we waste a breath saying something useless and mean spirited about his physical person takes away from the power of calling out his terrible actions and ideology. It isn’t fighting fire with fire, it is playing his idiotic game. It makes it possible for him to say people are picking on him Yes, he is a terrible bully and peoeple need to stand up to him. But with strength and policy, not with irrelevant 8th grade nonsense. Calling Greta a… Read more »
I completely agree. Trump has used the power of “insult” quite effectively. Much of his base puffs up and loves it when he does it. He almost overtly encourages the Liberals to do it back to him, and they do,because he deserves it. But that’s the trap. Suddenly all the more moderate people that could have been put off and disgusted by Trumps conduct and language are given a compelling arguement: “Well all the Liberals are just insulting Trump’s character, so he’s just standing up for himself.” So you get the chicken or the egg arguement of who was “mean… Read more »

Ha! How many of you guys have a close friend or relative that is that same kind of self professed “genius”? I had a friend of that nature I grew up with and it would blow my mind sometimes! In all truth, he was a little above average intelligence. Just talking to and really knowing and understanding someone like that is wild. They are smart enough to pick up things many people miss, but then they take that miniscule amount of knowledge, riff on it for awhile, and then suddenly they are spouting the craziest BS you ever heard. All… Read more »
GREAT START TO THE SEASON—WINDLER PROBABLY SIDE;INED FOR 4-6 WEEKS WITH LEG DISCOMFORT………………” AND THE BEAT GOES ON …..THE BEAT GOES ON ” / WHAT IS HE WEARING A TRIBE UNIFORM– WTF
Nice stuff. I’m totally in the dark on Garland. My gut tells me he’s going to be in an unmitigated bust. Who giving his build will have a very hard time staying healthy and I basically seen one NBA skill from him and that’s the ability to shoot long distance. You can make all the McCollum / Lillard comps you want Oh, but both of them had proven college careers to develop their bodies in their skill sets before they got thrown to the wolves. Call him is also tougher and lanky or than his height. Lillard has the extreme… Read more »
I hated the Garland pick, but since Hunter was gone, IDK, taking a swing with a shooter might be OK. But the overall roster construction is horrid. A bunch of combo guards and bigs. No combo forward types outside of Windler and only one 2-3 type in Cedi. Maybe Porter? Disagree on Clarkson. Keep him. He is an expiring contract. That could have value. And if a team gets desperate for scoring, he can get buckets. We will cycle through a lot of expirings this year just like last, but only TT has real value at present. At worst they… Read more »
I’d suggest it COULD end up working out quite if they end up as one starter and one great 6th man bench point guard. Then pairing one with Windler and the other with Porter as SGs (assuming the pan out) could eventually end up pretty fierce. Both SGs have the potential to be deadeye shooters while Windler has the size to cover the 2 well while Porter makes up for being an inch or 2 shorter with his elite athleticism. Jury is still our on how those guys work out, but they do at least have the basic tools to… Read more »
It gets proven every playoffs, being able to hit jump shots is the most important skill in basketball. I don’t really have an opinion on Garland yet, but I certainly can’t fault the FO for going after shooting with their first two picks.
Why wouldn’t they play Garland and Sexton together? Either those two have a future playing on the court at the same time as eachother or they don’t. Better to have a whole season of data than not. As for Clarkson, would you rather that he had been cut? It seems likely that some team is going to talk themselves into the need for volume bench scoring.
While I generally agree with point 4, one of the only ways to deal with a narcissistic, fact-immune, superficial goon is to point out his glaring physical flaws. No need to bothsider this one.
