2020-02-24Well, the chance for revenge starts tonight. We’ll see if Saturday was an aberration or if the Bickerstaff era is as undisciplined as it seems so far. The Cavs are without McKinnie, but Kevin Love will suit up, while the Heat are without Herro, Meyers Leonard, and Jimmy Butler. Should be interesting.
Sorry John B, just saw your reply, I’m using PIPM, which clearly has KPJ in another league on defense than Sexton:
KPJ DPIPM: +.11
Sexton DPIPM: -3.86
and overall numbers say KPJ should start:
KPJ PIPM: -1.93
Sexton PIPM: -3.40
and also, PIPM has Sexton rated slightly worse than Garland, defense being the main difference.
Garland PIPM: -3.04 (-1.73 DPIPM)
Sexton PIPM: -3.40 (-3.40 DPIPM)
RPM might not show the same magnitude, but it’s at least been following the same trend. Pretty confident in my assessment of KPJ’s defense and there appears to be no number that disagrees about whether he’s better than Sexton on that end.
Bottom line for me is I don’t care how hard Sexton tries, he’s literally one of the worst defenders in the NBA…. PIPM has him at the absolute worst, worse than Trae Young.

Well, no Simmons for Philly tonight. I would think this would be a night where Drummond plays big minutes.
Me, I go right at him. Sime with Dre, some with Love, sime switches onto smalls. If he gets in foul trouble, we can take this one. TT still owns Horford.
My biggest issue was with Drummond last night and in the most of the games he has played. Not sure he is committed. Best thing he could do is to provide energy and defense. I am skeptical a drummond postup is great offense. Would rather him be used as screen setter and constantly roll. Of course guards would need to find him then. But his finishing in the roll when he has gotten it hasn’t exactly lit the world on fire since he has been with us. Bickerstaff needs to start whoever he thinks should start. He has to know there is NO way he is getting fired at this point.
It’s only been 3 games, but Drummond has been a disaster so far. Really hope it’s because of a lack of chemistry/experience and not because he’s an empty stat guy that doesn’t impact winning. The other big thing is that KPJ has surpassed Sexton in net rating for the first time (that I’ve seen) this year, based largely on his far superior defense and slightly improved offense. IMO, KPJ has the talent, numbers, and trajectory to become an elite perimeter defender. He’s already putting up numbers that suggest he’s at least a league average defender now at age 19.
It’s kind of amazing how huge KPJ looks out there…imagine how he may look after an offseason program….hard to know what he turns into, but a LOT of teams are kicking themselves…
He legit guarded Adebayo and held his own in the post during that 4th quarter run… Bickerstaff called out his defense first last night. He had the strength in his base to keep Adebayo from backing him down.
His temper is a legit problem… has had at least 2 or 3 incidents this year, granted he’s handled the aftermath perfectly. But they drafted him at the perfect spot, got that extra year of control… just gotta keep his temper in check.
Sort of held him in check. Bam had his way a number of postups and was really the only one scoring for them in the fourth. In addition Nance and tt provided some crucial help and a number of brilliantly timed doubles when Bam was about to drop step, turn the corner, or even reaching the rim.
RPM has KPJ well below Sexton overall. I generally trust it more than net rating since it adjusts and regularizes for the quality/effectiveness of opposition lineups and the lineups an individual plays with. Certainly not perfect, but I generally think it is ok for looking at large differences between players, meaning if two guys have a large difference I think it is indicative. Small differences I am much more doubtful about. Sexton offense has been relatively neutral, whereas KPJ had not based on the whole season. Props to Nate & Buck for the LNJ at the 3 suggestion. Do not know if it will work vs teams with more quickness/ball handlers, but we certainly have nothing to lose at this point. Is McKennie hurt?
On Drummond, it can be tough to integrate a new player with few practice sessions. I think the high TO #s for him indicate he still has a way to go. Heck, we have won twice with him here. I’d rather see that. Plus, TT & LNJ havebeen awful good.

Just got thru replay, what a cracking last stanza.
Larry was huuuge in the paint. His sideways roundarm dunk will stay with me for a while.
Haven’t analyzed minutes distribution to confirm, but last few Cavs wins, Drummond appears to not be on the court during crunch time. He still appears to not be being used appropriately (ie in the paint). I don’t know what’s going on, but if this keeps up I can’t see him staying.
Sad I missed it. Well, not the first 3 quarters, but the 4th & OT. Heat without Butler, but you do not win many down 19 after 3.
The problem with so many young guys is you see flashes, but they can’t sustain it. Heck, the older guys on this team have not been consistent either.
JB is already trying more lineup variations than Beilein.
Every once in awhile cavs look legit key will be to do things consistently and put in the effort….hopefully young guys learned and can grow…that was fun ending to the game
