1. In recent MVP conversation, the national media is using on/off numbers to prop up LeBron’s candidacy. How many times do we have to go through this nonsense before they recognize that the huge disparity they are seeing is actually a condemnation of LeBron’s style more than evidence of his brilliance?
Almost every team that LeBron has played on over the last decade has been terrible when he sits. It isn’t because his teammates are so terrible. It is because LeBron’s complete dominance of offensive Xs and Os makes it impossible for a team to function without him.
Have they ever considered that the leader of the team should empower his teammates in a way that allows them to flourish without his singular talent on the floor?
Ultimately, I can’t envision a scenario in which the Greek Freak doesn’t win his second MVP award. He is absolutely, by far, the best player in the NBA this season. Regardless, it is obnoxious to hear how LeBron’s primary weakness as a leader is actually somehow a strength.
So yes, LeBron is having a fantastic season, unbelievable really for someone who has been in the league so long. If he wins the title this season, James should probably be considered the greatest player of all time. He still isn’t the MVP of this regular season, and it is precisely BECAUSE his team is terrible when he isn’t on the floor.
He has never taught anyone how to fish. And when his coach tries to, he complains, steals the rods and fills the boat. That isn’t a terrible thing, but it isn’t a good thing (Sheesh, we all talk like that lunatic now).
Giannis for MVP.
2. It’s not looking good for those of us who want to see Zion Williamson in the NBA Playoffs. The Pels have let go of the rope over that last week dropping their last three. Zion has been a monster, driving directly through defenders chests while displaying an insanely quick first step. For as entertaining as he is, Zion hasn’t been enough for the Pels.
Meanwhile, the Grizzlies have fought through a tough schedule to stay at .500. I wouldn’t count on that going forward. Their remaining schedule is loaded with playoff teams and road games. If Ja Morant can somehow keep Memphis in playoffs, he ROY award will be all but guaranteed.
Most people have assumed the Blazers would make a push at some point. They are still four games back in the loss column. They are alive, but I’d rather watch Ja get his feet wet, the Spurs maintain their streak (just because), or Zion rain fire down upon the mortals around him than watch Dame and C.J. dance in isolation.
3. The Cavs have certainly played a more aggressive brand of defense since Beilein left the sideline. Some of that has to do with scheme while most of it has to do with effort and rotation. J.B. has the Cavs switching more actively on off-ball screens. It is isn’t a huge disparity, but there has been a difference.
More impacting has been the addition of Andre Drummond. Even with Andre out of the lineup, his presence has been felt via energy and rotation. Larry has played more with Kevin Love both as 4s and 5s, but also with Tristan or Andre with Larry at the three.
Nance and Drummond are both among the most active defensive players in the league. Toss in Porter’s effort, and Dellavedova’s recent uptick in play, and you have the makings of an adequate defense.
Collin has been strong on the offensive end over the last couple weeks. His defense is still rather terrible, but a defense can survive with one minus defender if the other players are locked in.

In short, the Cavs are between “watchable” and to legitimately “fun” these days. No easy task for a team sitting in last place in the conference in early March.
4. The Nets and Magic have interesting talents that make little sense together and/or have no real future together. It is likely that both teams will get swept in the first round of the Eastern Conference Playoffs. I can only imagine where Vegas sets the betting lines. Can you see the Raptors or Bucks losing a single game to either of those teams?
The Raps and Bucks defenses are just too multi-dimensional to let limited offenses breathe in the Playoffs. Both the Magic and Nets are better teams than the Wizards, but I can at least envision an el fuego game coming out of Beal and the bomb happy Wiz.
Quickie:
Everyone is worried about getting sick. One would think that this hyper-awareness of germ transmission would in effect, lower overall cold and flu season numbers. Is it possible that coronavirus will actually make society healthier? OR, will we learn that many of the things we usually do as society to fight colds and flus are actually useless activities? I suppose it will be very difficult to know without a test group, but at least both scenarios are on the proverbial table.
Love got himself a bird.
When I heard the Atkinson news, I immediately thought of Mark Jackson. But maybe Lue will be in play there? I don’t envy whoever has to go in and deal with Kyrie Irving…lol…
And Durant and DeAndre Jordan.
Draft radar:
Bigs: Wiseman, Toppin, Ogongwu
Wings: Avdija, Okoro
Tall/long guards: Ball, Hayes, Haliburton
No munchkins: Anthony
Not a fan of Edwards or Hampton.
Unless we really come on strong late (which I think could happen) AND get bad lotto luck, we should be able to nab someone on that list.
I don’t think the Cavs would have interest in Cole Anthony, but if they were to somehow draft him, Altman needs to get his name legally changed to Corby.
Killian
My guy!
Wow, Nets fire Atkinson. Good job, Kyrie. Bring on Mark Jackson.
I’d be interested in Atkinson for the Cavs when they fire Bickerstaff next December.
I’m hoping they just promote Gottlieb LMFAOOO but I guess I’d take Atkinson over JB… at least Atkinson’s had more recent “success”.
Other than not playing 2 ways/10 days, I like what I have seen from JB.
Like the lineup variations. Like the modest defensive adjustments. We have been competitive despite missing Drummond, TT, Garland, Porter, McKennie, & Exum for multiple games. For some games, all of them were out.
Bron may make a late season MVP push. Lakers are only 3 back of the Bucks in the loss column. If they finish within a game or two, or ahead, he may get MVP.
That showibg tonight, especially the D on Giannis while being a force on O, really will stick with people.
Thanks Ben, On your final topic of 2019-nCoV: I know I have banged on a bit about myself on this blog over the years, mostly about my kids (apologies) but haven’t talked about my career. I’m an Immunologist, specialising in viral vaccine development. Given my training, I wanted to share with you all a news article which against all odds in this day and age manages to capture salient pieces of information relating to the latest pandemic and what we might expect. I give it an 8 out of 10. Spoiler alert – our global future is not as dire… Read more »
hey thanks Simmo, and dang didn’t know we had a doctor in the house!!! LMFAOOO
In Seattle for the past couple of months and it’s wild… people definitely freaked out here LOL. From what I’ve seen, looks like the main problem is supply chain disruption of medical equipment since China manufactures a ton of it.
This game isn’t a litmus test against the bucks, but it feels like some of the offensive struggles they had in the playoffs last year.
The elbow slap from behind to knock the ball loose from a dribbler is such an obvious foul I don’t get why it isn’t an automatic foul every time.
gotta flop to get the foul call LMFAOOOo
as for JVG and MJ, they were good in the beginning, but then became self-caricatures.
Boy that was a ridiculous move by Giannis.
I don’t get why people think Mark Jackson and Van Gundy are good. I find them insufferable.
Wow both these teams turning it over like the Cavs lol
Jelen would probably be a good analyst if he wasn’t a blithering moron. Too bad.
Grant Hill >>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>
Definitely the way you play the bucks. Giannis doesn’t have much room. Their whole key is whether they make enough outside shots to counter, or whether Giannis can hit some shots outside 8 feet with consistency.
Wow, these refs are pretty awful…
Dumb swing by lopez. Can’t get away with swinging the bows anymore.
God, terrible call…
yeah that was dumb… Lopez had no room to move at all.
He definitely swung forward.
I agree, but initall foul should’ve been called for violating cylinder…. call both fouls.
Some flopping in this game.
Cannot wait till Dion is playing big minutes for this Laker team…
Connaughton has some ugly bricks.
they’re all shooting bricks… playoff ball.
Lakers lucky Middleton not hitting…yet. They’d be down by 20.
If lopez is shooting well from deep, bucks are hard to stop on o. Opens up so much space. I don’t always trust him to do so consistently.
both these teams suffocate their opponents on defense… hope JB is taking notes lol
Both also have DPOY candidates now or at times in the past and many more solid defenders.
yes, but Van Gundy made the point about the Bucks scheme teams should copy… just pack the paint!!
Yeah not a bad idea for the cavs, but we also don’t have their length and quicks to recover and contest.
i think the idea behind it is just playing the %s, so even if the contest isn’t there, they’re shooting a shot from distance.
I am sure it is. But they still have the length and quicks to mitigate somewhat and contest some.
agreed… and really a contest is just hustle, something our team has largely been allergic to
Great draw up by bud. Giannis misses a bunny, four point swing.
Korver is a traffic cone these days
He looks pretty washed.
He is. Basically they have to hope he has a game where he catches fire from deep in the playoffs where he wins them a qtr or two. Doubtful at this point.
Ti don’t think much of Caruso, but he’s better than Kuzma. Kuzma just blows.
Caruso’s pretty solid.
love Caruso… he’s like a more offensively functional delly.
Agreed
Bucks lakers is brick and tov central.
chuckie clarkson (who i always liked) helping utah beat bos.. 17 pts..
Bucks Lakers tonight, should be a good one. Or maybe not good, since I think the Bucks will win pretty easily…
I think a lot of people are confusing and conflating their frustrations with Sexton’s individual play with the fact that the cavs took Garland when we already had Sexton, and subsequently forced a Garland who wasn’t ready to start into a pairing that doesn’t work. Like Ben said, you can hide one guy on d. Not two, or three in the case of Love. If you split Garland and Sexton, you probably have far fewer complaints. Fact is they’ve been relatively competitive of late save for the Pelicans game and most of those teams they’ve been competitive against are good… Read more »
I include myself in this. His defense is bad no doubt. But he has improved and become more efficient as a scorer and has shown improved vision of late. He likely won’t ever be a very good playmaker and he almost certainly won’t ever be a good defender, but he has room to grow in both regards. As a 21 year old 8th pick in his second year I am pretty satisfied with his progress this season. Based on everyone else taken after him that wasn’t a reach or injury risk (MPJ) the cavs made the right choice as Shai… Read more »
nah… not going out on that limb… would’ve rather had Mikal Bridges or Divencenzo for sure.
Garland pick was an attempt at fixing the screwup that was Sexton is a PG.
Bridges seemed fine at the time. Didn’t really do that much for me then. Doesn’t do much for me now. Divencenzo is two years older. He isn’t as good on another team.
Mikal Bridges would’ve created opportunity to trade to get that additional 1st rounder with PHX.
Divencenzo is an ideal 3 and D who IIRC has 99% athleticism and a pure jumper. Also, loved that drive he just pulled on LeBron LOL
and both of those guys know winning basketball… something I can’t say about Sexton.
I guess, but I wouldn’t say divencenzo is all that good a shooter. Drive was on Morris I believe. Defensively yeah he is very solid.
We currently have 13 guys on NBA contracts. More than half are currently out: 1. Windler (out for season, leg stress reaction); 2. Exum (ankle sprain); 3. McKennie (foot); 4. Garland (groin); 5. Porter (concussion); 6. Drummond (calf strain); TT (knee contusion).
TT & Drummond back at practice and full go today. Still, Sexton, Delly, and Cedi are the only healthy bodies 1-3. Some of the 10-day & 2 way guys should play some.
Agree 100%
Man. Cavs Twitter around Sexton is just nutty. He’s definitely improving, but scoring a bunch of points and winning aren’t the same thing. People going crazy dragging folks who don’t think he’s the second coming.
I think the extreme fringes on Sexton are both chock full of complete loons.
The second coming of who? Jamal Crawford?
Or Lou Williams. He has the potential to be as impactful as Williams off the bench.
I think Lou Williams is the best case scenario that’s realistic. Williams is more naturally skilled, but Sexton’s the better athlete.
Russell & Duncan were never me first guys. Score, defend, rebound, facilitate, whatever. Magic & Bird the same way.
All those guys could take over, but were also willing to play second fiddle or sublimate their game to enhance thing for the team. Bron is a willing passer (at least early), but the system is always about HIM.
Good points
Just to take the Bron thing further. Compare: MJ. Already had scoring titles & an MVP in the 80s. Collins asked him “Do you want scoring titles or championships?” He bought into the triangle, which allowed Pippen (and later Kukoc) to function well as the fulcrum when MJ sat, 6 titles. Kareem. Five MVPs as the dominant force, but only one title (likely two if not for other injuries in ’74). Shares the spotlight with Magic. Gets 5 titles with Magic (plus another MVP & Finals MVP). Wilt. Most insane dominant force ever as huge scorer with the Warriors. Wins… Read more »
Good stuff. Even more than LeBron dominating his teammates, his teams are often built specifically to function as LeBron machines. I know it’s common to dismiss the late aughts Cavs teams for their lack of talent, but the 2009 squad featured 5 players that shot 38%+ on 3s on heavy volume. And the team defense was ranked 3rd in the league. But of course it cratered after he left, it was a team entirely structured around James’ 33%(!!!) usage rate.
This is the truth more than anything else.
Great points
Great piece, Ben. Amen to the LeBron stuff, though when he was a Cav, you’d get shouted down for suggesting anything of the sort. He has never been a guy who augments a system, he IS the system. That is why he’ll never be the greatest in my book (MJ, Kareem, Russell). Still, top 5 (with Wilt) ain’t nothing to sneeze at, and he is amazing at 35. Clips gonna paste them, however. Thanks, MikeO for the heads up on Sexton getting a bit of Lowe love. Call me crazy, but I think we have a shot at #8 next… Read more »
Lowe has some nice things to say about Sexton:
https://www.espn.com/nba/story/_/id/28842662/ten-things-like-including-la-clippers-nba-title-favorites
Yes pretty balanced. Sexton is forcing people to pay attention despite all the warts.
Good stuff, Ben. Totally agree on Lebron. It’s absurd that most of his teams are tire fires when he’s not on the court. As good as the Lakers have been this season (to my surprise, I’ll admit), if Lebron pulls a groin or something they are toast. They are hot garbage when he sits. And now with 100% more Dion. Giannis is insane. Every time I watch him this season he does something unexpected that gives me a jolt. Their entire team seems better than last season. I’ve posted this before here, but the George Hill they are getting is… Read more »
Love it, Ben. Thanks for this. Stay safe out there, everyone.
