Podcast Episode 226: Who He Play For?
2020-12-04Tom, Nate, and Eli make a long awaited return to the podcast booth! This was a fun one, as we discussed a whirlwind NBA offseason, the Cavs’ draft and free agency, and all the news from around the NBA. Tom Pestak has been decidedly out of the loop when it comes to NBA news, so we added a couple games to make the proceedings more fun, and to get Tom up to speed. Tom took a swing at the game made famous by the Chuckster on Inside the NBA, “Who He Play For,” as Tom tried to guess some of the NBA free agent moves. In “Real or Fake” he tried to figure out if some of these NBA names like Facundo Campazzo were real or made up.
We said goodbye to Tristan Thompson, recapped the Cavs offseason, and Tom topped it all off with a Kafka-esque tale of trying to shop health care options. Nate and Eli expressed their biggest regrets (Nate’s involves a planetarium, Eli’s a PS5), and we looked forward to an exciting season of Cavs bball. It was a fun and random ride as these long time compadres celebrated a return to NBA action.

Fedor has some tweets/pieces up. Topics:
1) Sexton out tonight with minor ankle injury.
2) Okoro’s offense/shot better than expected.
3) Love talks about being in a DG, Okoro, Cedi, Dre lineup. Okoro at the 2.
4) Love disagrees with Kyrie’s media/pawns comment. Says Kyrie has changed.
CtB post up!
Gameday!
Boogie & Wall looked pretty good last night. Two members of the all-rehab team for sure. Early projections: Wall, Irving, Durant, Griffin, Cousins.
Love RJ roasting Channing Frye on the national broadcast LMFAOoo
Melo and Gary Trent hot off the bench.
Some preseason thoughts: Patrick Williams is a big boy, not just long… seems like his jumper is decent too.
Dame already in midseason form, Giles had some flashes, Lauri Markenen some flashes. John Wall looked fast enough.
FWIW, PT from last year: MPG: Sexton 33.0, Love 31.8, Garland 30.9, TT 30.2, Cedi 29.4, Drummond 28.1, LNJ 26.3, KPJ 23.2, Clarkson 23.0, Exum 16.8, Knight 15.1, McKinnie 14.8, Delly 14.4, Henson 14.2, Zizic 10.0, Wade 5.9, Mooney 4.8. Starts: 65 = Sexton & Cedi, 59 = Garland, 56 = Love, 51 = TT, 10 = LNJ, 8 = Drummond, 4 = Delly, 3 = KPJ, 2 = Henson, 1 = Exum, McKinnie MP: Sexton 2,143; Cedi 1,910; Garland 1,824; Love 1,780; TT 1,721; LNJ 1,472; KPJ 1,162; Delly 821; Clarkson 666; McKinnie 593; Henson 412; Exum 402, Knight… Read more »
Anyone interested in CtB Fantasy Basketball League?
hey vintage, never done basketball but would be willing to try
How many do we need? I might be willing to give it a try. Haven’t done hoops since the 90s.
I’m terrible at keeping up. Just been working a ton. I can out it to the guys if you want.
We would probably need at least 10. I have a couple from a Browns blog interested as well.
I’ll play
Nate, do you have a way of connecting all of us via email?
I must say, I like what Bickerstaff is saying. Getting Love/Drummond/McGee to buy in will be tough.
LNJ, Delly, and Exum are good defenders. They also have want to. Drummond certainly can be. Okoro will be. McGee can be. Maker can be. KPJ can be.
The question is gonna be Sexton, Garland, Love, Cedi, and Windler.
Why Love buying in gonna be a problem? I don’t think Exum is that good of a defender he’s ok.
Exum was one of 4 guys with positive defensive stats last year for the Cavs. LNJ, Delly, Exum, and Drummond (mostly from Det time). DRPM? DWS? Can’t remember which stat was used.
Did you watch Cavs games last year? Love threw hissy fits all over the place and is terrible getting back on D. Getting him to be a Grit & Grind guy is gonna take some work.
Love was fine after Beilein left, IMO.
I’ll buy into Bickerstaff if he holds Drummond accountable for launching dumb 3s… i’m not holding my breath though!!! LMFAOOO
Also starting Sexland is already a defensive fail… can’t take him seriously if he thinks that’s taking defense seriously.
I don’t generally listen to athlete interviews, but Justin and Carter had Nance Jr. on the latest Chasedown pod, and he was actually really good. Had some good observations on how camp went, and how the younger Cavs were progressing. Worth a listen.

you gotta cliff’s notes?
Not very accurate notes…
Okoro has an NBA body right now, shot is good, not broken at all…
Windler looking good…
Garland definitely bulked up, looking really good…
Nance saying he’s been working on just letting it fly, no hesitation…
Sexton is proven, super worker…in the gym all the time…
Thinks Cavs will be fighting for 7/8 seed, but laughs, and admits he’s an optimist…
He’s a good interview.
hell yeah, much appreciated Mike!
Gotta disagree on the starters. Though I think Sexland is dumb, you have to give Darius a shot to develop. Time to accept Cedi can’t guard anyone. He’s a 2nd unit guy.
Plus, with KPJ in doubt, it makes Garland more important.
Garland, Sexton, Okoro, Love, Drummond.
Cedi could be the #3 SF pretty quickly if Okoro & Windler can play.
Though, when we do not want to be Lillipucian, one of those 3 should slide over to SG.
agree with your point about cedi, but disagree about your point on sexland.
Absolutely agree Nate, I think starting 5 at this instant should be Sexton, Cedi, Okoro, Love, Drummond. Play Cedi at the 2, gives him more opportunity on the ball and it mitigates his crappy defense against stronger wings.
Bruce Pearl was the one who turned around Auburn’s basketball program…. went from worst to first in the SEC.
Tom clearly isnt drinking enough alcohol to offset the bacteria in his mouth
Welcome back guys. One of the most stressful times in my life was while living in the US and having our medical insurance company (who we had had full coverage with) repeatedly sending rejection letters to us for our v young daughter’s medical care invoices. CLE clinic were great at reprocessing & resending the invoices to the company, they said just keep sending because your coverage is good & *wink wink* some companies will kinda low key try to get you to pay the invoice before they do. I was shocked that this seemed to be a legitimate tactic. I… Read more »
Nice to hear you guys. I like the Okoro pick, especially for this particular Cavs group. Jumper aside, he’s more skilled going to the rim than MKG was.
Hope everyone is staying as safe as possible over the next few weeks. Be smart over Christmas.
I’m actually jealous my name isn’t Jordan Bone.
