Live Thread: Cleveland Cavaliers vs. Detroit Pistons

Tonight, we have the Cavs traveling to Detroit to take on the flagrantly tanking Pistons. With the Pistons’ injury report longer than War and Peace, Vegas has the Cavs as slight favorites (-3 at the time of this writing). So, the pressure’s on, let’s see if the Cavs can deliver, GO CAVS!!!
JB isn’t going anywhere until next summer at the earliest. At least, I’d be very shocked if he did.

Yeah, but at a certain point how many coaches are you going to through and even be able to claim you’re building anything, let alone a “culture”? Bickerstaff makes his fair share of mistake but the players trust him and if we keep blowing everything up all we end up with is shrapnel.
I don’t disagree with this, but the guy needs an offensive guru as an assistant to install and run an offense and draw up oob plays.
I like your thinking, John B. You can fix deficiencies with a staff shakeup, and god knows I’d love to see a more creative offense, but giving these young guys a whole new system/coach is a recipe for disaster.
We’re the 2nd worst offense in the NBA and our offense is designed to create shots for Sexton in the midrange. JB Bickerstaff hasn’t had any coaching success in the NBA, I’m not sure there’s any argument about “culture” when that culture is playing stupid basketball and losing games.
I am not sure if the offense is designed to do anything. Because the offense doesn’t really involve all that much besides p and r.
Which is the problem. Not much variety in looks.
P and R is the game now, we just don’t have collective BBIQ and ball movement to exploit switches/mismatches and the guy who has the ball the most in his hands (Sexton) is a terrible and unwilling passer.
We also don’t have a James Harden, CP3, LBJ, Dame Lillard, Kyrie, Luka, etc, etc, etc, to make it 90% of the actions we run. High p and r can be the game for teams that have personnel that can run it every single time. Most teams don’t have those guys. Otherwise time to get more creative for the majority of teams in the league.

Yeah, but even if they don’t go to a love centric high post offense, there are so many other actions and ways to be more creative in a guard centric offense than just high p and r initial actions. My main frustration with JB other than OOBs which have been an issue since preseason. They just have to have more variation in general. Sexland just isn’t ready to just give the ball and go p and r or iso and expect efficiency consistently game to game. They need more action off ball with both those dudes. and I think people really don’t understand that Sexton is basically operating exactly like Garland as far as touches and play calls. Sexton is functionally in this offense, a point guard.
Even tonight, the real culprit was DG…. and he still had a higher assist ratio tonight than Sexton (20.0 vs. 14.8).
I don’t disagree that they run the same stuff for the two of them. Point being they could make it simpler for either as far as reads. And subsequently force Sexton into having more vision since he doesn’t have to read. Just knows based on set movement instead of how defense keys in on single actions. Simpler if defense not keying in on you if you have to react after receiving ball instead of having ball and being the focus from beginning. no question I agree with you there’s some very ridiculous problems on offense right now.
But it’s hard for me to say the plays don’t work when Sexton has demonstrated a consistent pattern of a lack of vision/playmaking and an abundance of ball-hogging and chucking.
I just don’t believe there’s a scheme where Sexton magically turns into a great passer because of amazing off-ball movement, I think he just doesn’t fundamentally trust his teammates and would rather shoot the shot.
I hate to pray on someone’s downfall, but pretty sure JB makes millions so he’ll be fine.
Watched the game, but couldn’t post. Not great, but the tank abides, as the saying goes.
Missed the game, saw a few CtB comments and decided to get some exercise instead. Looks to be the right call.
I can’t stand the idea of tanking – what the Rockets have done this season disgusts me, but if that’s what is happening with the Cavs then so be it.
In other news, GSW are on a tear and appear disinterested in the tanking concept now too.

If you have Curry, still playing like an MVP, you’d be nuts to tank. They should have tried hard to trade the pick last year before/ during the draft. Maybe they did. But it’s crazy to tank with a player that good.
