Podcap: Cavs 121, Bulls 105 (or, Stay Golden, Buck)
2021-04-22The Cavs hosted the Bulls Wednesday night with a new coach at the helm (at least for one night). Greg Buckner, a longtime assistant, got his first shot at being in charge… and his team responded with a wire-to-wire impressive victory over the team just ahead of them in the race for the play in tournament. Sexland led the way with 55 points on blistering 19-30 shooting (7-9 from deep), and the Cavs played some of their most stifling defense of the season in the first half to earn Coach Buck his first victory… and subsequent icewater dousing.
To revel in the outcome, Nate, David and the prodigal EvilGenius piled into the podcast booth for a couple hours. We hit all the highlights, spent some time chewing the NBA fat, musing about playoff scenarios and favorites and doing a deep dive into classic sit-com territory for some reason. Your patience will be rewarded if you make it to the end for some DW hot takes on Bea Arthur.

He hasn’t been watching Osman. We don’t have another consistent playmaker at guard. Think that leaves defacto Delly.
i wouldn’t mind seeing point Osman… but Delly’s driving the tank just fine lmfaoooo
This comment from Lowe makes no sense.
Delly is a PG. Stevens is a F. Cedi a wing. They are not conpeting for minutes. And with Prince (and Windler) out for the year, more F minutes have already opened up.
So, disagree. Plus, we are better with Delly on the floor. We know what Cedi is (been here for years). Ditto Stevens: good D, good hustle, no J.
I have no idea what to make of Bickerstaff at the moment. There are great coaches out there, but they’re probably hard to find unless you get one of the known guys like Carlisle, Pop, etc. But those guys don’t go to losing teams at this stage in their careers which for Pop may not be all that much longer. So on a rebuilding team, you have to find a new one of those guys before they “make it.” Easier said than done. Easiest way is probably find one of the top assistants from either one of those guys or… Read more »
Nice guy, he just has no clue how to design a good offense or doesn’t have the gravitas to tell Sexton to stop ballhogging.
Prince balling out and now needs ankle surgery hahaha – code for we cant keep winning so give him season ending surgery at a position of need and we sign a two-way player…Cavs better hope this plan doesnt backfire and they get like pick lower than top 5
Supposedly there was some weird quote from Mark Cuban I think or someone from the Mavs that Luka and KP dislike each other LMFAOOOOO
So, Prince & Windler both out for the season. Cedi in doghouse. A lot of Larry at the 3?
Wade and Larry…. also Stevens maybe?
As it stands right now, 25+ million/yr for Sexton is so monumentally stupid… at this point, it’s hard to say he’s worth even 10m/yr given how little he playmakes and defends. We better see something pretty damn special in the playoffs this year, if he can even get them there.
Agree with Nate that Allen’s lost some money over the last month or so… but not a lot IMO. I think 4/80 is a fair for both sides number. If I had to give a max out, it’d definitely still go to Allen over Sexton, no question IMO.
Great point EG… Cavs really haven’t had a coach with a good plan in a really long time LMFAOOOOO
Nate: “why did Patrick Williams only get four shots?”

Quick dive on Martin:
Defense first guard whose offense blossomed junior and senior year of college… not a great shooter, did improve in college. I like that he’s a defense first guy, usually the opposite especially with guards LMFAO.
THANK YOU ADAM FOR THE INFO——HARTY VS HARD ROCK—–NEED A CTB VOTING CONTEST—-MY VOTE STAYS WITH HARD ROCK !! :-)
not even close!
agreed! LMFAOOOO
SOME VERY GOOD POINTS CLF –( AS USUAL )—-AND I DO BELIEVE DUE TO COVID LAST YEAR —THIS YEARS F.A. MONEY MIGHT BE MORE “LOOSE –WILD SPENDING ” SO POTENTIAL IS THERE FOR HARD ROCK —LET’S HOPE CAVS DO THEIR HOMEWROK ON THE PLAYERS AMD MAKE THE CORRECT DECISION(S)
MARTIN 6′ 2″ UNDRAFTED OUT OF MEMPHIS/ PLAYED 9 GAMES WITH THE NETS—-PLAYED G LEAGUE FOR LONG ISLAND —-21PPG—-5.8. ASSISTS
SOME VERY GOOD POINTS CLF ( ABOUT HARD ROCK // ALLEN ) AND THE UPCOMING DRAFT WHICH IF THEY WERE IN PLACE TO GET MOBLEY —–YOU TTHINK SOME TEAM WOULD OFFER HARD ROCK 60/ 4 ON A RATHER SMALL SAMPLE SIZE
I’m not saying it’s likely, but possible…. Hartenstein’s defense and passing are unquestionably legit IMO. And FA is the time for teams to give out bad contracts LMFAOOOOO
OTOH Nerlens Noel has been pretty decent and got nothing so I guess that’s why I’m not working for a front office LMFAOOOOOOOOOOOO
here’s something to remember, Tristan Thompson got 9m last year and there’s no universe where I’d want TT over Hartenstein LMFAOOOOO no offense to TT thank you for the ring!!!
Bio fodder here: Just had a run through his German wiki page (which is more comprehensive than the English one) and found his German nickname is “Harty.” New edit to the page indicates that J.B. Bickerstaff apparently played Hart’s dad in a Ducks/Beavers battle of state universities in Oregon in the late 1990s.
LMFAOOOOOOo for real???? WOW!!! that’s crazy!!!
Harty is definitely easy to type too LMFAOOOOOO
yup, dude has some real German fans it seems. If and when the season ever rebalances and we get basketball in October there will be many shouts of ‘prost’ and clinking of the ceremonial steins at the Oktoberfest festivities in Deutschland, CtB roadtrip 2022
hey 2nd largest Oktoberfest in the world I think is in Zinzinnati!!!! LMFAOOOOOO
WOW –TOUGH SEASON FOR THE PRINCE—-WHO IS THIS JERIMIAH MARTIN THE CAVS ARE GOING TO SIGN
WOW, get well Prince!!!
https://twitter.com/kelseyyrusso/status/1385320982676660228?s=20
nooooo, he was playing lights out for a good run there
This is such a bummer.
Thanks for the shout out y’all… and shout out to all you guys for maintaining the best spot on the net to talk Cavs!!! Also as I’m listening, gotta wonder at this point what it will take to sign Allen and Hartenstein, and if the Cavs FO are leveraging them against each other in contract negotiations. If I were judging things as they stand today, I could easily see Hartenstein securing up to 10m/yr and a team giving him a chance to start…. if another team wanted to get silly, could even see something like 4/60. Charlotte would be a… Read more »
WILL DO SIMMO ——-BETTY WHITE AN AMERICAN ICON !!!
The return of Evil Genius along with the rise of Coach Buck was clearly a catalyst for this win, really fun to watch. So many great moments in this game, it almost makes up all of those games that the Mike DeAntoni-era New York Knicks used to call “feel good losses”. Can’t wait to catch this pod, like Leo will probably have a long listen tonight while doing some data entry — thanks for posting!
will listen later this morning while I stare at Excel sheets and coding so I might make it through the whole thing. Good win for the team…yes it was crap opponenet but Cavs have to beat those types of teams…JB comes back Friday, see how team responds.
WILL LISTEN LATER ( MRS NOMADS HONEYDO LIST IS CALLING )—–FUN GAME// AND BEING WITH ALL OF YOU LAST NIGHT TO ENJOY —-LISTENED TO BUCK’S POST GAME INTERVIEW /// IMPRESSIVE —NO DRAMA // NO NONSENSE TYPE OF COACH —-WAS ASKED WHY HE DIDN’T CHALLENGE A CALL— ( CAVS WERE UP BY 25 AT THE TIME )—HIS RESPONSE —-” IF I DID I WOULD NOT HAVE A COACHING JOB IN THE NBA ” —TELLS IT LIKE IT IS !!!
This pod is the good chuckle I needed today. Get it in your ears, Nomad.

#433 Kabengele -4.4
#441 Delly -4.7
Would be interesting to see these collated in a graph over time.
Wouldn’t be surprised if the subscription version of dunksandthrees.com (epm website) has data tracking like that. The up to date numbers are free, but they have a premium that have previous years and other stuff.
the website i pull this data from does have in season graphs over time!!! if i knew how to post pictures, ill see if i can get some screen grabs.
wonder if this is in general weighted more towards Bigs or is it just that our Bigs are our best players?
i tend to think it’s more the latter than the former if we take our offensive and defensive efficiency into account. i think we are close to an average defense, and the 2nd worst offense in the NBA.
Yeah although I seem to recall bigs got larger defensive weights for RPM. Not sure about EPM. Don’t remember anything about that when I read their methodology/comparison article.
That’s probably true, but I think it honestly makes sense to me when really defense boils down to length if I had to reduce it to one thing.
one thing I can say about EPM is that it shows offense > defense as an NBA truism:
I think Steph, Dame, Jokic are around +6 to +7 off. EPM
Gobert and Tybulle are around +3 to +4 def. EPM
It does today. But it hasn’t always been a truism in the past, like in Bill Russell’s era.
right, IDK for sure but that rings true for me.
Another great quote from Coach Buckner: “most guys in the NBA really don’t wanna truly pass the basketball” LMFAOOOOO speaking the truth out here!!!
Argh have been dying of pod withdrawal. Thank you guys.
David’s hot takes are the hottest takes that can be transmitted electronically without melting electronic devices.
Heck yeah gonna listen later, wanted to drop this nugget from tonight:
Sexton: 28.0% usage rate, 25.0 assist ratio (season avg. 14.8 assist ratio)
KLOVE: 24.6% usage rate tonight (20.0 assist ratio), 17.8% usage rate vs. Detroit.
Two differences in the offense tonight were finding more shots/touches for Love, and Sexton actually being a willing passer.
I loved Coach Buckner’s comments tonight, explicitly called out Sexton and Garland needing to get others involved in the offense early in the game. Glad the message got thru tonight.
Good data there, looking forward to hearing Coach Buckner’s presser. Thanks also for all of your work (dare I say Hartensteinian hustle) to get the recaps and threads up for the past few weeks Chris!
thanks Adam and same to you too!!!!
