Recap: Cavs 102, Hornets 106 (This One’s Gonna Sting…)
2021-04-24It was a tale of two halves in Charlotte for the Cleveland Cavaliers, who gave up a seven point halftime lead to the reeling Charlotte Hornets, a team coming off of a bad loss last night against the Chicago Bulls. The Cavs outrebounded the Hornets 47-38, outassisted them 27-26, and held them to 42.6% shooting from the field… so why the loss? Well, the Cavs were plagued by turnovers, losing the turnover battle 16-5. Nearly half of the Cavs’ turnovers were committed by Collin Sexton (four against only two assists) and Larry Nance, Jr. (three against only two assists). Also, the Cavs relented 15 offensive rebounds to the Hornets. Both of these parts of the game led to Charlotte taking 14 more shots than the Cavs for the game. Let’s dive in for tonight’s takeaways…

Game ball: Darius Garland
DG turned in another solid performance in a recent string of relatively strong play, with 27 points (12-20 shooting, 2-4 from three), six assists, four rebounds, two steals, against only two turnovers. He was particularly magnificent in the third quarter, saving the Cavs’ offense with four straight buckets from the field. The only nitpick on his game tonight was the lack of a three ball (only five attempts on 20 shots), but it’s hard to complain about that when he was either finishing and dishing all night long. Check out DG on the play of the night, a mighty fancy assist to Allen on the last possession before halftime:
Oh my word, Darius Garland. Off-hand, live dribble assist. What the heck. pic.twitter.com/e794RXmmPJ

Honorable Mentions: Matthew Dellavedova and Isaiah Hartenstein, AKA “Hard Rock, Harty”
Delly’s passing was absolutely sublime in the first half, and over half of his seven assists went to either Sexton or Hard Rock in a magnificent stretch early in the 2nd quarter. Even though Delly had trouble staying in front of Charlotte’s perimeter players or making a shot, his ball movement and energy is championship level. Hard Rock was his usual rock solid self, going 5-5 from the field for 10 points, five rebounds, two assists, and a block in only 15 minutes.
Coming up short: Collin Sexton and Kevin Love
Love played perhaps his worst game of the year tonight, going 3-11 from field (although Love shot well from three, going 3-7), with only five rebounds and two assists. It didn’t help that his number wasn’t called very much on offense (20.0% usage rate, below his season average of 22.7%), and when he did have the ball, the ball tended to stick to him (13.3 assist ratio, below his season average of 15.7). His defense was also terrible, with both PJ Washington and Miles Bridges going off tonight with 50 points combined. One question that should be asked of Coach JB Bickerstaff is why was Love in the game if the Cavs aren’t using him on offense? (Same can be said for Dean Wade who got one shot in 17 minutes).
Late in the game, Charlotte just kept putting Kevin Love in pick actions, targeting him, and using P.J. Washington as the screener for Terry Rozier. Smart offense. That's where Love can be exploited. #Cavs even switched to zone on at least one of the possessions.

Much of same can be said for Sexton, who hogged the ball every chance he got (31.6% usage rate, 7.4 assist ratio). Sexton was great on offense when finishing a play and making open shots, but he was an abject disaster every time he wanted to dribble and role play as a point guard. Luckily Sexton’s defense was so poor he was benched for foul trouble more than once, granted the referees weren’t exactly fair themselves as our own Evil Genius correctly pointed out.
Stat of the night
Team defensive rating while Love was on the court tonight: 135.8 per 100 possessions.
Team defensive rating while Sexton was on the court tonight: 131.3 per 100 possessions.
Quick notes on Charlotte
The Charlotte Hornets quietly became one of my low key League Pass must watches this season, especially while rookie phenom Lamelo Ball was playing. Their coach James Borrego is the real deal, honing his craft at the side of Gregg Popovich for basically a decade, including two championship runs. When watching the Hornets, the first thing that jumps out is their ball movement and shot selection on offense. They move the ball with complete unselfishness and they hunt for threes. Tonight they shot a whopping 40 three point attempts, 10 attempts more than the Cavs.
While the Charlotte duo of Terry Rozier and Devonté Graham combined to have a mediocre shooting night, they won the game with their decision making and passing, doubling the amount of assists of Sexland 16-8, while committing only two turnovers combined. The aforementioned front court duo of Bridges and Washington rained threes all night (9-15 combined from three), exploiting Love and Allen’s unwillingness to challenge perimeter shots. P.J. and Miles also dove to the rim and dunked a lot, especially when Love was “defending” them. The Hornets posted three 25 point scorers between those two and Rozier, which you don’t see every day. It was gritty team performance, showing a lot heart to come back in this game with active defense and smart offense
Next stop, D.C.
The Cavs will move on to Washington D.C. to take on the scorching hot Wizards who have won nine out of their last 10 games, with their dynamic duo of Russell Westbrook and Bradley Beal. Until then, have a fantastic weekend CtB!!!
P.S. #FREEBUCK (h/t to CtB’s own Evil Genius)
Me: "What is your greatest challenge against a switch-heavy defense?" #Cavs Jarrett Allen: "That's a great question. (3 second pause) I don't know. You're going to have to ask J.B. on that one. I'm not trying to be mean, I just honestly don't know how to answer that one"

Luka with 13 assists tonight i think, broke the Lakers defense down easily with the pass in the 2nd half. AD looked very rusty.
KP is a good player, but when he is out, they just run everything through Luka all the time.
As for his tendency to get chirpy, some of the all-timers have it too (MJ, Bird, LeBron).
More info.

Docic is just so good. Stop complaining, though, bro.
that was an insane dagger
All NBA 1st: Curry, Doncic, Jokic seem like locks. Embiid too if he has played enough games. Ditto Bron.
If those 2 get left off, who are the frontcourt replacements? Giannis & PG13?
Dame had a great start at G. Do the Suns or Jazz deserve players (CP3, Booker, Conley, Mitchell, Gobert)? Nets?
I hadn’t heard of a Sexton concussion, but I may be out of the loop.

Yeah what? this is literally the first I’ve heard of it.
As good as Doncic is, he really needs to learn to STFU and stop b******g about calls. He’s almost in Bray territory. Grow up, dude.
He can’t handle the smothering defense of Andre Drummond!!!!
THE REAL CONTEST IN THE NBA AT PESENT IS THE ” CAVS // OKC TANKATHON —-OKC WITH 13 LOSSES // ROW ” WTF

color me surprised.. i would have figured NO would be at 42 -17, and PHX at 26 – 33.. good that i am not a gambler.. as one of darla garlard’s harshest critics last year, it is nice to see the young man coming into his own.. windler has a nice touch but doesn’t seem to have the bone density required in this sport.. should be an easy fix.. run those boys through the bone densitometer before you open the check book.. trade sexton for .. ?? NOMAD bro.. i have heard that when the boat’s a rockin’, don’t come… Read more »
hey buck! 100% agree… DG’s development has been a bright spot this season, I truly enjoy watching him play the game.
After last night’s performances, package Sexton and Love and send them off to wherever to learn how to try on defense LMFAOOOOOO
“should be an easy fix…run those boys through the bone densitometer before you open the check book..” — Well said, buck
Great recap CLF — I think the notes on Charlotte especially important — fans and followers of the team tend to gnash teeth over lost opportunities as if the other team has little say in the matter. At the same time I take Leo’s point about precisely this, that adjustments are needed. It will be interesting to see at the end of the season how many close games the Cavs were able to win and how many they lost in the last 5-6 minutes, and why. (The Kings’ buzzer beater being indicative of one where it’s hard to argue anything… Read more »
thanks Adam, i think the team has a major problem with ball hogs, judging by that Allen quote, and a coach that does nothing about it.
Do they have a problem with ball hogs? Sexton, maybe, but I’m not even sure that’s true of him. I think he doesn’t know any other way to play than as he does, he’s never had the DNA built into him from an early age. I certainly don’t feel that Garland is a ball hog. I mean at the end of the day, somebody has to score buckets.
It’s definitely true of Sexton that he’s a ball hog… has the ball and is used in this offense like a point guard, passes like a center. Also, Love’s season average assist ratio is below NBA average. Jarrett Allen simply can’t pass well at all. So, as it stands, our two best offensive players by EPM (Sexton, Love) are below average passers, and those are two guys that make up the majority of offense on the team. If we include Allen, that’s 3 of our 4 best offensive players being awful passers… we include Okoro, then it’s 4 out our… Read more »
I wouldn’t call love a below average passer. Context is necessary for statistics. Love needs the ball to make plays and he needs it in positions and with enough off ball movement to do so. He doesn’t just command doubles anymore. He doesn’t get a ton of looks in the Adelman offense big passing position, the high post. Webber, Divac, and love all thrived in hitting people from there. Allen, well he is sort of two dimensional but he is or at least was pretty darn good at those two dimensions. Sexton is just being utilized incorrectly. He isn’t a… Read more »
Love is most certainly a below average passer this year, but yes, I was only talking about his performance so far this year, historically, he’s a fine passing big man. But Allen, Sexton, and Okoro simply aren’t good passers for whatever the reasons. I’ll grant that Allen and Okoro have good excuses, Sexton has none. I did a quick dive into lineup data, and Love is in 3 out of the top 4 offensive lineups with greater than 200 minutes played…. Love + Okoro and Love + DG = best Cavs’ duos by far. So I will still contend that… Read more »
sorry I was unclear, couldn’t edit, only looked at 2-man lineups
Ha. That doesn’t qualify as a system. However, think he actually could actually be a pretty positive impact player on the right team or circumstances. We aren’t that team personnel wise not do we wish to rock the boat and generate those circumstances.
LMFAOOOO I guess “system” and “bad system” are indistinguishable!!!! LMFAOOOOOOOOOO
Oh I agree, honestly none of this is Sexton’s fault really (other than him not trying on defense)… it’s JB and Koby. He’s just doing what he does, it’s the coaches/FO that has to figure out his appropriate role on the team and communicate and control it.
and for contrast, our best passers? In order:
Delly
Garland
Hartenstein
Nance
Dotson
Cedi
Wade
Prince
that’s the list of Cavs who are above average assist ratio in the NBA (NBA average: 17.9)
this was another prime example of Cavs coaches failing to adjust and players being focused enough to adjust in order to win…you could see it coming too the way the game flowed that this was going to be one the Cavs let slip away because they aren’t coached well and don’t function at a high level consistently. Again most of the tiem I saw JB he was yelling at officials. This was at least the 9th time this season the Cavs lost a winnable game.
yup, Charlotte adjusted and we didn’t. they started to launch 3s with their bigs and they tore our defense up.
Nice cap, CLF. I thought there was a good bit of lineup interestingness in this one, especially with OKoro and Delly in the backcourt and Delly at the three. I’d like to see more Dean Wade though. “Resting” Love next game might be helpful.
great point Nate, in fact I remember when you said in the live thread that you liked the lineup, and i went back and checked, i think the most successful lineup was DG/Okoro/Wade/Nance/Hartenstein by +/-
and you are 1000% correct on Wade.
