Recap: Pacers 111, Cavs 102 (A Midwest Classic)
2021-05-11The Cleveland Cavaliers put up a scrappy effort last night, falling just short as the Pacers’ offense came to life in the fourth quarter to take the game 111-102. The Cavs just didn’t get the shotmaking they needed especially in the second half as their second game of a back to back legs took over, shooting only 35.5% from the field for the game. But it was a better, more consistent effort than last night against the Mavs. Let’s dive in for last night’s takeaways…
Game Ball: Isaac Okoro
Ice bounced back from a bad game last night as good players often do, with a double double (22 points, 10 rebounds) in 43 grueling minutes. He also chipped in four assists and a steal for good measure. It was nice to see Okoro supremely confident in his three ball (3-8 from three) and just in general offensively.

Honorable Mention: Dean Wade and Collin Sexton’s passing
With a spot start in place of Kevin Love, Wade put in an all round performance in 38 minutes on the court with a double double as well, producing an efficient 19 points (62.5% TS), 12 rebounds, three steals, and a couple of assists. A good friend who watched the game because of its playoff implications for the Chicago Bulls thought Wade’s shooting was especially impressive, and that the Cavs probably should’ve tried to feed the hot hand some more. Nevertheless it was great to see an aggressive, scrappy Wade out there.
Collin Sexton kept up the recent trend of decent passing with eight assists and a 19.0 assist ratio. Unfortunately, Sexton’s shooting took a nose dive in the second half as his tendency to chuck shots led to a very inefficient scoring night (40.0% TS). Nevertheless, fans can’t fault the effort of Young Bull, and hopefully he’ll learn that he doesn’t need to play hero ball to win games.
Bench comes up big
The Cavs’ three man bench unit came up absolutely huge in this game, led by the stellar play of Mfiondu Kabengele and Brodric Thomas, with a hat tip to Jeremiah Martin’s defense. Kabengele post a team high net rating of +18.6 in his 16 minutes on the court, which begs the question why didn’t Coach JB Bickerstaff use him more? Kabengele’s three point shooting has been decent and his athleticism and energy were sorely needed in a game such as this.
Brodric Thomas may have had his best game from a team impact stand point, with a +1.6 net rating in 34 big time minutes. Credit to JB for riding Thomas in this game, and Thomas rewarded JB’s faith with a two stocks, three assists, and six rebounds. The next step in Brodric’s game is to find his scoring opportunities, leveraging his NBA worthy jump shot and length around the rim.
Quick Notes on the Pacers
The two best players in this game played for the Pacers last night, with Domantas Sabonis (21 points, 20 rebounds, nine assists, +14 plus/minus) and Caris LeVert (20 points, 10 assists, +13 plus/minus) putting their imprint on the game with big time performances to keep them in the playoff/play-in hunt. The Pacers also received huge performances off the bench from Cavs’ nemesis TJ McConnell (10 points, seven assists +13 plus/minus) and Butler Bulldog product Kelan Martin (25 points, seven rebounds, +15 plus/minus). As the Cavs’ broadcast mentioned last night, it was great to see LeVert on the court after dealing with cancer surgery.
One thing to note about the Pacers is their disastrous coaching situation. They fired the well-regarded Nate McMillan who’s thriving in Atlanta for the Hawks, while a recent report by the Bleacher Report chronicles how Nate Bjorkgren’s personality has pissed off the entire organization. Also it should be noted that their assistant coach Greg Foster was suspended a game for trying to fight one of his own players in the middle of a game. ESPN’s Adrian Wojnarowski is reporting that the Pacers could fire Bjorkgren after just one season.
Three more to go
Next up for the Cavs, a date with the floundering Boston Celtics tomorrow night at 8PM, who will be without Jaylen Brown as it was just reported last night that he’ll require wrist surgery that will end his promising season. Until then, have a great one CtB!!!
Nice cap, Chris!
Thank you Nate, competitive games truly help the creativity!!! LMFAO
FWIW, our injury report looks like this:
OUT: Garland, Hartenstein, Stevens; Nance, Prince, Delly, Windler.
Questionable: Osman
Clearly not trying even when healthy: Love
Funny that this was patently obvious by the eye test, and also the fact that the Chase Down podcast went on record wanting to give Sexton a max contract LMFAOOOOOO

no shade to them as people, they seem like very nice fellows and also kudos to them for being open to new info, just a critique of their basketball analysis re: Sexton.
Smart, Walker, and Rob Williams out tonight for the Celtics, along with Brown. Dangerous territory for the Cavs – they could actually win. But I doubt it.
Tatum still the best player on the court and I have a hard time believing DG is gonna play.
but yeah LMFAOOO it should be a tight one.
its hilarious to see some randoms play out of their minds in games that mean nothing now…Cavs failed their test a month ago and really the only guys who might be back this year that are randomly playing are the kegenbale guy and maybe Thomas in order for the org to really wake up i hope they get like the 7th lotto pick itll force org and mgmt to actually make a sound decision and show they have plan in place…really think they got top pick or top 3 they will just bank on that guy to save franchise like… Read more »
Remember, we could have picked Michael Porter Jr instead of Sexton. Just sayin’.
With Smart & Kemba out (on top of Brown), we do have a shot. Tatum should be best player on the floor by a mile. TT should be motivated.
A bit late, but congrats to Gottlieb (sp?) on being named USC head coach. Sucks we lose our best coach.
I know, I might not ever get over it LMFAOOOOOO
Boston’s magic number to clinch #7 is 1. They have 3 games left: at Cavs tonight, then some rest, then at Minny & at NY (b2b).
While they could probably lose out at still be #7 (I doubt Charlotte or Indy run the table), in a one off I’d want home court and we are the easiest opponent they have left. Minny healthier and trying.
NOMADS “TAILS “–SO IT WAS LATE JANUARY–MY TEAM HAD JUST LOST 3 / ROW–DROPPING US OUT OF 1ST PLACE –1ST PLACE TEAM COMING TO PLAY —-HAVE ALWAYS BEEN “CREATIVE ‘ WITH MY MOTIVATING TACTICS–FELT I REALLY NEEDED A SPECIAL ONE FOR THIS GAME —-ENTER THE “DAWG POUND “—AFTER REVIEWING OUR USUAL PRE GAME STRATEGY I STARTED MY USUAL “AMPING ” UP PRE GAME SPEECH—– AT THE RIGHT MOMENT I SCREAMED WE ARE GOING TO PLAY LIKE ” A BUNCH OF JUNKYARD DOGS— ( R.I.P MARTY SCHOTT…..) “–I THEN PROCEEDED TO PULL OUT THE BIGGEST DOG BISCUIT AND MUNCH IT DOWN… Read more »
lmfaooooooooooo fire jb hire NOMAD!!!!
Yep. Wolves to 22. Orl headed for a L. OKC with a lead.
Nuggets won. Clinched at least 4. Clips have easy schedule. Hopefully Nugs rest at Detroit on snb2b after at Minny. Pistons could yet to 21.
Philly failed to clinch #1. May have to do it vs Miami. Or in game 1 vs Orl.
Thunder feisty against the Kings so far, but Presti will literally throw the game if he has to.
GO TIMBERWOLVES——CAVS NEED TO STAY AT THAT “MAGICAL –TANK ” NUMBER —-21 !!
Looks like Twolves will get win 22 tonight…not surprised, they’ve been a lot better lately, and their players are trying to win.
Tonight in Tank Commander: Det (20), Cavs (21), Minny (21), Orl (21), OKC (21):
Philly at Indy: 76ers can clinch East #1 seed. Philly has Orlando twice to close the season. Be great if they rest everybody for those.
Nuggets at Charlotte. Denver can clinch #4 (or better) with a win. With Clips #3 and LAL #7 (or 6), I bet #4 is what they want. Next 2 for Den: at Minny & at Det (btb).
Minny at Detroit. Magic at Bucks. OKC at Sac.
Okoro has played a metric ton of minutes for a rookie, I don’t have the number handy, but believe he leads all rookies by a mile. Should pay off for him next season. Loved his drives into the paint last night. Just work on the handle all offseason.
Boston may be their best chance to win a game with the Brown situation. They might be down going into that game. But I imagine Cavs lose.
Agreed. The Nets will likely need our game to hold off the Bucks for #2 (Mil has TB) and to get Harden some burn.
Celtics are locked into the PI if they lose tonight, but could still fall further without 1 more win. So I bet the go for it vs us & then they can rest for at Minny or at NY.
Wiz will try to get #9 (or even #8) if they can.
Player score worth 58.3% of ranking. Only Orlando worse. Tied with Houston.
Management (owner, FO, coach) worth 16.7%. We are dead last.
Money (cap sit, willingness to spend), market appeal, & future draft assets all 8.3%.
sounds about right :(
Cavs ranked dead last by ESPN in the Future Power Rankings (next 3 years).
https://www.espn.com/nba/insider/story/_/id/31399170/nba-future-power-rankings-predicting-best-worst-franchises
By category: Players (T28), Management (30), Money (15), Market (29), Draft (6).
While this is likely accurate, this is the kind of crap that makes me hate modern sports. I mean, talk about turning everything into just another chit in the capitalist system. Jeez.
Karl Marx woulda been a Cavs fan.
LMFAOOOO @ that’s right! All for one, one for all!!!
I am glad the Pacers are a dumpster fire for how the did Nate M dirty.
If a team with 33 wins can be a dumpster fire. Compared to a 21 win one….
