Summer League Podcap: Cavs 94, Magic 84 (or, Point Center?)
2021-08-12Wednesday night, Evan Mobley, Isaac Okoro, and the Cavs earned their first victory of the summer with a dominant third quarter performance to put away the Jalen Suggs led Orlando Magic 94-84. The ole ball coach Nate Smith made the call to the bullpen and brought Elijah Kim and Chris Francis off the bench to do a deep dive on the young Summer League Cavaliers now that they’ve reach the halfway point of schedule.
Eli and Chris cover all aspects of the game, waxing poetic about the virtuosity of Evan Mobley’s passing, the feats of strength of Isaac Okoro, the rock solid play of Lamar Stevens, and the Cavs’ bench mob stepping up big time. The CtB duo also surveyed the lay of the NBA Summer League land and the latest Cavs’ news/rumor about the a possible Collin Sexton extension??? And to top it all off, Eli takes Cavs the Podcast international with a glorious shout out to the Cavs fans of South Korea!

Just posted a live thread for the game this evening if y’all wanna hop on over!
Does anyone think a Sexton extension could be a precursor to a trade? The issues with trading Sexton are that the receiving team could lose him after one year if YB decides he wants near max money. So we cannot get much for him. Further, his salary is so low, that any guy we get back is gotta be making Cedi money. Pairing him with Love only makes it worse, we’d have to attach assets. But if he is signed for multiple years, for Norman Powell-ish money, he might be moveable. Or enable us to get involved in a big… Read more »
I think if a trade was going to happen, it would’ve happened pre-draft when there was the most smoke. Now it seems like there’s mutual interest to make something work. Always willing to be surprised though.
RAOUL/ NATE / JASON / CLF………….WHAT WE REALLY NEED IS……..” MORE BEER PLEASE ” TO ENDURE ANOTHER SEASON OF ” GROWING PAINS ” !!!
LMFAOOOOOO ain’t that the truth!!!
Or possibly hire a coven of witches to ensure Love and Windler stay healthy this year!!!!
There is always a price for that sort if thing. Not sure Love and Windler staying healthy is worth it. Now, LeBron? Absolutely.
LMFAOOOOOOO fair point!!!
This is how desperate I am for three point shooting LMFAOOOOOOOOOOOOOO
Disagree with the complaints on the podcast about the lack of signing free agents. There isn’t much money and not many good players to get. It would be totally dumb to waste some money just to act like you are “doing something”.
Also, of course the team says they hope to be in the playoffs next year. I’m sure 100% of all teams would say that. BFD.
No one’s advocating “wasting money”. I’ll speak for myself, but Koby and Co. need to start building around Mobley day 1, with some damn jump shooters… we are the worst 3pt shooting team in the NBA after all LMFAOOOOO
And Rubio and Mobley make us worse. Well, I guess Rubio is an upgrade from Delly. But he ain’t a sharpshooter.
And Prince had the best % on the team.
Yup… too bad there wasn’t a way to acquire Rubio without giving up Prince.
Im 100% with Chris on this. Without adding shooting, you’re doing the entire squad a disservice and you’re not going to he able tp run an offense that resonates with anything going on in the NBA right now.
I’m not trying to nitpick on a great pod, just making a few counterpoints, which I think are pretty solid: Every team at ever level in every sport says they are planning on doing well next year. What do you expect them to say? With no more picks, not much money, no playoff expectations, who are the great jumpshooters you expected Koby to go out and get? A realistic plan (for this moment in time) is a strategy the Indians/Guardians have been really good at: wait it out and hope to get lucky and sign someone who falls through the… Read more »
Oh you’re fine Raoul LMFAOOOO I’m just trying to explain to you that Koby’s actions betray what he’s saying that’s all, and we’re just calling him out on that. There are literally a million ways to say you’re hoping for success without looking like a clown talking about playoffs with a bottom 3 Eastern Conference roster and no attempt to improve the shooting on the squad. And the Cavs have assets, be it Sexton or Allen (although the contract offered was a mistake IMO) or MLE to improve the shooting on the squad. There have been plenty of suggestions here… Read more »
and as far as making the playoffs, Koby can say whatever he wants, but if he’s not trying to get a shooter to help these guys out, then I’m gonna call him out on that BS, not sure why I should or anyone would stay just stay silent about it or buy his spin without criticism.
uncle buck has always spoken the truth about kolby numnuts.. no record of accomplishment, no relevant nba (or even college) experience (i mean seriously, how is this guy where he is ? affirmative action still requires competence).. highly questionable judgment.. middlebury college is a nice white cloistered liberal arts spa (i almost attended), but little in the way of hoops bona fides going to be attained there. in short, he is a joke.. i will keep saying it.. cavs would be better off just doing what the sports journalists suggest.. it’s free.. and likely way more valuable..
Maxey, Reed, Springer stepping up for Philly, big time comeback if they take it in OT
inverse DHO/PnR nice dump off Johnson to Cooper this was a fun one!

damn what a pass!!! nice ball control with the off hand on the dribble.
Man Johnson and Cooper with another fantastic game, Cooper’s probably going to get killed on defense and Johnson hasn’t proven he’s got a jumper but damn.
If the Hawks hit on those guys, or even one of them, they are gonna be real interesting. Especially if Hunter & Reddish continue to get better.
Young + Collins, Capela, Bogdan, Huerter + Hunter, Reddish, Lou Williams & Gallo is a nice top 9. Okongwu & Johnson make 11.
Though Trae make a hit with the Harden rules in effect.
yeah, I think the rumors were they were looking to trade Cam at this point.
Cam Thomas 30 point game and game winner…. although the game winner was some lucky trash LMFAOOOOO
Orange Mamba used to drop 30 in SL all the time. That is Jordan McRae for you youngsters.
yeah except Cam Thomas is a teenager and McRae was a 23 year old LMFAOOO slight difference!
My point still stands. Dropping 30 in SL for a guard is nice, but does not mean much to me. 19. 23. Makes little difference to me.
cool, I guess my post was not meant for you! LMFAOOOOOOO
Nah. I am just not big on the age thing. I do not believe guys stop getting better at 23. Nor do I buy that younger guys are necessarily gonna improve because they are younger and have more room to grow (aka they suck more now).
Now, certainly some real youngsters will physically develop more. But hard work & drive is what nets improvement. That can be done at 19. 23. 27. 30.
Cam was 10-23 and 2-6 from deep. Meh. Gunners doing well in SL.
no one believes that I don’t think LMFAOOO but there is such a thing as mathematical probabilities I’d say and it’s been well documented by sports analytics people.
Kessler Edwards and Chris Duarte monster games today
Just of interest because I thought he’d sign a 1+1. Maybe he’s a bit spooked by his latest injury.

Also, that’s a crapload of money.
wonder if he could spare the .3?
HEY BUCKAROO—-WEARING MY “CHUCK TAYLORS “—-AM READY JUST IN CASE :-)
NOMAD bro.. if you hear banjo music approaching in the darkness.. run.. and quickly
Regarding what Eli mentioned on Mobley gaing weight:

oh hell yeah I love that quote!
Been hanging for this. Will be my ear food in the morning. Thanks guys.
Appreciate as always Simmo!!!
The end of that pod with Eli talking about the South Korean Cavs community was an all-time moment for me. So fun. What a great story.
It’s so great!!! Bi-lingual CtP episode too!!!
Finally got to listen – this is such an awesome thing!! It’s hard enough catching the Cavs game from my location, but language and culture and less of a barrier. Seriously impressive.
While I have been beating the bottom 3 in the east drum, and think we are likely bottom 8 in the league, I would point out that Rubio is a supplemental vet. Via trade not FA.
That’s true…. and Rubio will help a ton if healthy.
Not sure why we think a lot of these guys won’t make the roster. Mobley & Okoro are obvious locks. Stevens close to it. Assuming that, look at the roster:
1. Garland, 2. Allen, 3. Mobley, 4. Sexton, 5. Okoro, 6. Nance, 7. Rubio, 8. Love, 9. Cedi, 10. Windler, 11. Wade (NG), 12. Stevens (Non-guaranteed).
Dotson, Kabengele, & Thomas, all on NG deals. We ain’t exactly real aggressive in FA. Spots open: 3-4 main roster + 2 two-way, + Canton.
I wouldn’t count Hands, Blueitt, or Ryan out.
that’s a good point, I think the rest of summer league now that Okoro will be out and probably Stevens too will give some guys opportunities to earn looks at training camp.
Nice pod guys.
Re Okoro. I do not think Okoro was ever seriously gonna play point. Especially with Rubio here. But he does need to demonstrate offensive threat besides standing at the 3 pt line. Finishing off drives, cuts, and having enough handles/passing to attack a scrambled defense & make a play.
Thanks Jason as always!!!
yeah, that’s true, I think it was mainly a way to get a look at what Okoro does in a high usage situation.
THINK MOBLEY IS NOW GETTING SOMEWHAT COMFORTABLE —-STILL RAW BUT STILL SOOOOO MUCH POTENTIAL ——ICE LOOKS IMPROVED AND STEVENS COULD BE THAT “SLEEPER ‘ THAT BUCKAROO HAS ALLUDED TO——SENGUN HAVING A NICE SUMMER LEAGUE BUT HOW MANY PEOPLE WOULD HAVE CRUCIFIED KOBY IF HE PICKS SENGUN OVER MOBLEY ——-MOBLEY WAS RATED TOP 3 ON EVERONE’S PRE DRAFT AND HOW MANY TEAMS WERE EAGER TO TRADE UP TO GET HIM——KOBY/ CAVS MADE THE RIGHT CHOICE ——EVEN IF DOWN THE ROAD HE WOULD TURN OUT TO BE A BUST——HOW MANY YEARS BEFORE THE “GREEK FREAK ” MATURED ——–MOBLEY IS LIGHT YEARS AHEAD… Read more »
oh yeah, Sengun was never going top 5…. but maybe should’ve gone top 10, any pick after 10 he was gonna be a steal.
