Podcast Episode 248: Never Trade Larry
2021-08-22Nate Smith and Adam Cathcart made a Transatlantic connection for this week’s podcast to go over all the latest Cavs news. First we took on Chris Fedor’s “maybe trade Larry” Article on Cleveland.com, and examined Nance’s role on the Cavs. Then, given the newly released 21-22 schedule, we went through the Central Division to see if the Cavs can go better than 4-8 next year. We wondered at the Cavs’ surprising success against the Knicks, Hawks, Sixers, and Nets last season (7-5!) and if they can repeat it this coming year.
We talked about Chris Fedor’s Dylan windler article, talked through any last takes on the Cavs’ summer league, teased Tuesday’s Evan Mobley article by a mystery writer returning to CtB, said goodbye to Taurean Prince and hello to Ricky Rubio, lamented the Cavs lack of free agents (again), talked Collin Sexton extension (again), and surveyed the landscape of Cavalier beat writers.
It’s a fun escape during the dog days of summer!

Also not at all sure that Jerrett Allen contract was a mistake:
1.Keep in mind that salary money seems about to make a big jump, so he may not be making much on average by the end.
2. If they don’t sign him, then the trade was a give away. Remind us what the pick was in that trade. Who got drafted with it, or who was available with it? Would you rather have that player on a rookie contract + Hardrock for the tender price, than Allen at whatever he is making? Dunno – maybe.
Josh Christopher was the draft pick they gave up… I don’t think that changes the idea that it was a good trade, it was a fine trade, the point I keep going back to was that there needed to be an adjustment to the long term plan once they landed the 3rd pick.
To answer your question though, definitely would take Josh Christopher, Hard Rock 10/10 times over paying Allen top 50 money LMFAOOOO
Far from obvious that Mobley is a five, not a four. We are hoping he turns out to be something unique and special, not a better Jerrett Allen.
Okoro literally called him a point center, I think everyone knows except for the Cavs front office!!! Lmfaooooooo but will see of course, I’m willing to be wrong, but smells like an abject disaster that could’ve been easily prevented!
He’ll easily surpass allens offensive impact with his passing alone, provided Mobley learns how to finish at the rim.
C’MON BUCKAROOO —-YOU SHOULD BE ‘PRIMED ” TO COMMENT ON THIS
NOMAD bro.. i am on the record as an LNJ fan.. great work ethic.. great team player and leader, a decent mid-level pro..an NEO boy.. 2nd gen cav.. etc.. yes, it would be a big mistake to move him, unless he wanted out, which i can’t see happening.. plus, i just don’t see how he would generate much on the trade side, that would even begin to pay for the losses on the “intangible” side.. BUT, the cavs are clueless, and kolby is a pretender.. start looking for another team to pour your love into if they dump LNJ.. would… Read more »
If the Fedor article is reflective of the thinking of the Cavs’ front office, then they are on some bozo shit. They refuse to admit Mobley’s a five, even though that’s where he was most successful in Summer League. I’m completely in the camp of Jarrett Allen’s contract was a mistake. 5 years means they couldn’t include him in any sign and trades, He was godawful for the Cavs especially post all star break, only player worse was Sexton among starters/rotation players. They paid him nearly double what Robert Williams got, who is a superior player. Same with Richaun Holmes,… Read more »
Cavs’ defensive rating last season while Nance was on the floor: 107.1
Cavs’ defensive rating last season while Allen was on the floor: 115.2
Nance’s net rating last season: -5.6
Allen’s net rating last season: -9.1
And Nance is the one they wanna get rid of??????
I should add Cedi and Dotson were worse than Allen and Sexton too, but that doesn’t really change the point, Allen’s defense went into the tank for the Cavs last year.
Mobley cannot be a 5 now. Way too skiny & weak. Maybe in 2-3 years, he can olay the 5. Now he is a 4. We have 4 (or 5) guys whose best spot is PF (Mobley, Love, Nance, Wade, & maybe Stevens). We do not have a legit backup 5. We have a Lollipop Guild sized backcourt. Dylan Windler is our backup SG. No 3rd PG. And our SF rotation is an undersized SF who would be better at SG (though he cannot shoot), and Cedi. Our response to this state if affairs is to sign no one new… Read more »
I disagree about Mobley of course. SL defensive metrics showed he can handle it, and who cares if he can’t they’re not winning anything anyway. And it’s precisely because Nance and Love deserve minutes at the 4 is why they ought to have committed to Mobley at the 5 to begin with… and not commit 100m to Allen, who’s now getting paid top 50 NBA money. Windler’s not a shooting guard, lacks the foot speed to guard on the perimeter at the point of attack and is much better as a help defender, with plus rebounding, block, and steal rates….… Read more »
as for your third point, exactly why I had to rage on the keyboard LMFAOOOOOO…. just extremely clown shit from Koby yet again.
If they trade Larry, I am out.
HAVEN’T LISTENED TO PODCAST YET——-BUT NEVER/ EVER TRADE LNJ—UNLESS IT IS SOOOOOOO LOPSIDED INOUR FAVOR ——HE IS CLEVELAND TRUE BLUE / GREAT ATTITUDE/ WANTS TO BE HERE / DOES SOOOO MUCH FOR THE COMMUNITY/ AND HE IS PRETTY DAMN GOOD AT BASKETBALL
Agree. LNJ’s intangibles are particularly relevant for Cleveland and the Cavs, so there is little chance of a trade being a net benefit.
Will listen tomorrow. If you didn’t see it, this one on one with Adams shows some of Mobley’s skills, and also some examples of how vet bigs are going to bully him at times. Adams is mostly going half speed.

Sure hope Chris Fedor doesn’t have any inside knowledge. He gets paid to put out some words. A Cavs beat writer has to write about “what should they do right now”. Unfortunately there is nothing much to do, so hopefully CF is just clutching at straws.
The Raoul theory is to sit tight, keep the core (including LN), and hope to pick up someone who falls through the cracks, or get something for helping on a deal. Then get a couple good players in the 22 draft, and maybe then make a move.
