Cavs: the Podcast #253 (Wine/Gold, Over/Unders)
2021-10-04Ole’ ball coach Nate Smith gathers up Dani Socher and Chris Francis into the CtB podcast resort studio to recap the first action of the Cavs’ 2021-22 season with the Wine and Gold Scrimmage that took place on Saturday afternoon. Naturally after deconstructing the action, the conversation led to speculation about what the Cavs’ starting lineup could look like.
For the main course, the CtB trio plays the classic game of Over/Under, with tonight’s subject the Western Conference. Join in the conversation below with all of your Western Conference hot takes! Anyone want to put an over/under on Urban Meyer’s end date? Weeks? Days? Hours? Even-as-we-speak?
I’ll fire my last shot on fake depth. To me, a deep team is a team 2 deep with proven guys at every spot. Or more. We don’t have that anywhere other than PG (Garland, Rubio) and PF (Love, Markannen, Mobley, Wade). If you want to count Mobley as a 5, maybe at C. But he is gonna start at the 4, so that is a bit of a cheat. Regardless, we do not have a beefy C at all, so I cannot count C as a deep position. SF with Okoro & Cedi is borderline. Windler totally unproven. Even… Read more »
If you give me a 23 win over/under, I will take the under.
I hope I am wrong about that.
Mobley is starting. Will be interesting to see DG and Mobley’s interplay. I expect we’ll see the starters for the first quarter, at least, maybe not much after that.
Cavs tonight!
Funny how excited/desperate I get for some Cavs action this time of year, and then by week 3 I’ll be struggling to keep watching games halfway through the second period. Go Cavs!
At least they ramp us up
3rd pre-season game is usually when i tap out of exhibitions. Thankfully condensed this year.
DRUMMOND DOING WHAT HE DOES BEST—–“PADDING THE STAT SHEET “—-17//13
good point. Drummond has probably the best career ratio of stats / effectiveness in the history of any sport.
Sixers need to start Drumm and just let him create.
DG working on the shot he missed in the scrimmage, love to see it!

Agree on Okoro, but it is tough for him to use his strength to get to the rim playing as an undersized 3. As a two, it would work. But that means Sexton has to go.
I’ll elaborate on lack of depth. We have depth at 2 spots.
1) PF. We have 4 playable PFs: Mobley, Love, Markannen, and Wade. Plus Stevens is a PF in a wing body.
2) PG. Rubio is quality depth. Pagnos as the #3 is a bit questionable.
Nowhere else. Sexton/Okoro is a size mismatch for our opponents every night. Cedi can play some. He is our best depth piece off the bench. That ain’t good. Windler as backup SG is totally unproven. 3rd string? Stevens, but he cannot shoot. We have no legit backup C with any girth.
I would add center with Mobley backing up Allen. I think Mobley can be as effective as Hartenstein on defense, and has higher upside on offense as a scorer.
Deep roster? We have 8 guys who are proven NBA players + Mobley (Garland, Sexton, Allen, Love, Rubio, Okoro, Markannen, Osman). The rest? Windler, Wade, Stevens, Pagnos, + 2 more.
Now, I don’t want to be too negative. Mobley paired with Love/Markannen allays some of my Okoro-Mobley-Allen fears. A healthy Love is a bump. Garland breakout would be sweet. Healthy Windler?
But Sexton is a terrible team player. That ain’t gonna change. He needs moved or benched so Okoro can play the two & we get a legit three.
Certainly deeper than playing Drummond, Nance, and Thon Maker at once.
Come on, Nate. That was AFTER injuries. Stop trying to defend a loose/poor comment.
Cannot wait for Stevens, Wade, Kabengele.
And Nance & Drummond are, you know, actual NBA players. Nance a good one.
Rubio-Love is real. That should help.
If Stevens could shoot? Agree. But I fear he cannot.
I don’t think there’s any way you can look at this years team and last year’s team and say they’re not deeper. I mean I love Delly as much as anyone, but he’s not Rubio and has been riddled with injuries. The playing time that Wade and Stevens got last season will be invaluable off the bench if injuries happen, compared to Thon Maker. I have vastly more confidence in Kevin Pangos than Yogi Ferrell. The only position the Cavs had depth at last season was center. If i have hope for Stevens and Windler being rotation capable, that doesn’t… Read more »
Late to this, but have to agree. As a fellow Aussie I loved watching Delly make the most of his opportunities with smarts, and sheer mental and physical effort. He will be missed. That said, Rubio is a MASSIVE upgrade. One reason this team a lot deeper.
And apologies, guys
I don’t think this one is up to our audio standards
A lot of tech issues here.
Into the 27th minute of the pod and it’s now becoming clear the panel does not believe the buzz from the organization about the Cavs being competitive for the playoffs in the last third of the season
Don’t know if that is “buzz”, or “of course they are going to say that”.
LMFAOOOOO well, there is time to be convinced!!!
For me, it’ll depend on whether they’re serious about starting Mobley or if they go to the veterans in Markkanen or Love.
Also, how much does Rubio play? He’s probably the best guard on the team as of today (DG will eventually overtake him I’d think, maybe Sexton too), but do the Cavs actually let him loose like a 6th man or does he play limited minutes?
