Cavs: the Podcast #255 (Squidgame Island)
2021-10-18Korea’s own Eli Kim and Chris Francis join the ole’ ball coach Nate Smith for a giant squid sized episode of Cavs: the Podcast! The trio breaks down the latest roster moves, the Cavs’ lengthy preseason, from the bad loss to the Chicago Bulls to the glorious beatdown of the Indiana Pacers, at the hands of the many tentacled trio of 7-footers the Cavs started: Markkanen, Mobley, and Allen. They lament having no love for Denzel Valentine, but give special shout out to Rickio Rubio’s ability to strand opponents on “Love Island.”
And for the main course, the CtB trio completes the tour around the NBA with the Eastern Conference edition of Over/Under. Who’s up? Who’s down? You won’t want to miss the Cavs’ predictions! Also, Nate, Eli, and Chris give the hottest of takes in their NBA end of season awards (admittedly, Chris may have been doing a bit).
Lastly, it wouldn’t be a Cavs: the Podcast without the pitches. Nate pitches a show inspired by the cultural touchstone that is “Love Island,” while Eli gives his full endorsement to the Korean drama and global phenomenon, “Squid Game.” Chris wraps it up with a heartfelt shoutout for the rock act, Des Rocs.

nice evening for jordan poole, 21 pts working next to steph (taken right between the gangsta and the toothpick in ’19).. his numbers are looking fine.. nice year over year progress.. great first night of new season on the big stage.. cavs gave the gangsta away and kept the sad youngster with the gossamer bones).. poole at 6’4″ would look pretty good right now as an SG supporting the towers..say what you want about the warriors, but their current mgmt is consistently smart, and seemingly never wastes a pick..
Wiseman…
But yeah, not gonna argue that they’re not well run.
Agreed, at least they banished Wiseman out of the rotation!
Warriors 24-3 when getting 30+ assists

There was a huge debate about what the Cavs should do when Kyrie wanted traded. Many opinions were put forward — elsewhere and here — that the Cavs made a blunder by not keeping him. Now in Philly we get to see how keeping him might have played out. Except that Ben is only half as crazy as Kyrie — no sign that he thinks the earth is flat.
I certainly didn’t think they should have kept Kyrie, but the trade to Boston was a joke. Especially when IT’s actual health was revealed. Altman should have told Ainge to pound sand.
I think that was Griffin?
No, it was Altman. Griffin was gone in June ’17, the Kyrie trade was in August that year.
Mike is correct, but Altman was really DG’s proxy. Gilbert was terrified of having to rebuild from scratch again.
No doubt it was probably at least as much DG as Altman, but that doesn’t say much for Altman, either. It was a garbage deal from the start, but it was sub-sub garbage once IT’s health status was known. And all the Cavs demanded was an extra 2nd rounder. Pathetic.
Agree it was garbage. OTOH, as I recall, no other team offered squat for Kyrie. Partly this was because it was very late in the off season, and most teams did not have any flexibility. Compared to Simmons, Kyrie screwed the Cavs by making the trade demand very late. Another reason the Cavs couldn’t get a decent return for Kyrie is that teams already knew he was a head case, not least because he thought he was better than LeBron. As bad as the trade was for the Cavs, it was worse for Boston, because he caused problems there, and… Read more »
supposedly there was the brogdon/middleton deal and PG13 deal
WOW LMFAOOOOOOOO
Wiseman goes from starting to out of the rotation…. maybe a lesson in that!!!!!
Cant believe Iggy and Melo are still playing.
wonders of HGH- i mean modern medicine!!!! LMFAOOO
I truly hope Westbrook finally ups his 3 volume to 14 a game this year, and DJ starts and plays at least 36 minutes a game. Those are the two main keys to Laker success, imo.
Giannis >>>>>> KD
Just finished listening to the podcast! Thanks guys for getting me hyped about the season and back up to speed. I have not been paying attention at all to any of preseason news/action
hell yeah appreciate you listening Vintage!!!
Anyone know anything about Jordan Nwora (bucks). Kinda impressed by him tonight (and looks like he crushed the preseason). How come we can’t find these type of players?!
He does look decent tonight. 2nd round pick, but I don’t remember seeing him much before tonight.
He looks good!!! Draft nerds hated him for no apparent reason
why can’t cavs ever find talent deep in the draft (or even high in the draft) ? because they are the cavs, and have kolby, and before that they had griffin, and before that they had…. it is in the team’s DNA (and perhaps related to karma or the supernatural) to be mostly allergic (and blind) to all but the most obvious talent.. at least they didn’t trade mobley..
DID A “CLF ” RAOUL—-HEY I CAN STILL ” RAIN THE 3’S ” :-)
HaHa! Raining 3’s is the last thing to go!
EMBIID ‘SOMEWHAT THROWING SIMMONS UNDER THE BUS ‘ MIGHT HASTEN A TRADE EVEN MORE ………….NBA HAS TO LOVE ALL THESE STORY LINES // DRAMA/ THEY SEEM TO CRAVE IT
I am kind of with Embiid on this one. He already spent a lot of effort on making nice, and it got bupkis, and he has had enough of this crap. It is really hard to guess what approach is more likely to keep BS with the 76ers, probably nothing will. This highlights how much BS is in the “damaged goods” category. It is kind of like Kyrie when he wanted out of the Cavs (where he would likely have a few rings if he had stayed). Kyrie has so far done NOTHING good for any team, other than getting… Read more »
I don’t blame Embiid at all….he must be completely fed the F up by this point.
yup, Embiid innocent!!!!!
I’d be pretty fed up too – the guy hasn’t even made any improvements in his shot in 5 years!
Simmons’ days in Philly are numbered…
BACK IN THE GREAT STATE OF O-H-I-O ——( NO BUCKAROO THE “BANJO ‘ PLAYERS NEVER CAUGHT UP TO ME )——SO SIMMONS JUST BEING SISPENDED BY THE 76’S —–DO THEY POSSIBLY LOWER HIS TRADE VALUE—-DO THE CAVS JUMP BACK IN AGAIN WITH SEXTON BEING THE PRIMARY PLAYER IN A DEAL …..STAY TUNED
NOMAD bro.. glad u survived and thrived.. doubtful they can engineer a trade for simmons, but open up the drawer with the silver and try.. love, sexton and ??
That Simmons shark show is mind boggling.
simmons, mobley, allen, markanen and (garland/okoro) look interesting..
i am not a big-believer in QBs trying to make dramatic game-saving tackles after an interception.. if you are a high-level “pro” (wink wink), shake it off and go back next possession and engineer a drive down the throats of your opponents.. now, if you are unable to accomplish that on a regular basis, then we need to have a discussion about your future.. after 6 games, baker has 4 TDs.. brady, at what, 44 yrs old ? has 17 (roflmao) !! why would anyone watch baker ? or the bunnies (they really need to add some big bunny ears… Read more »
DITTO WHAT NATE SAYS —–NOW IS THE OPPORTUNE TIME FOR THE CAVS TO MAKE THE SEXTON // 6TH MAN ROLE ——–WILL SEE HOW “BIG OF MARBLES ” JB// KOBY HAVE
BB-sized..
If Sexton wanted De’Aaron Fox money, then they were likely 10-12 mil off per year and it was a non starter. They should move him to the bench if that’s what they think his role is.
Dammerall said that he was hearing that there was a deal for Sexton around 4/ $22 mill per +incentives, and Sexton’s camp turned it down. If true, I think Sexton will regret not taking it. I mean, what team out there is going to offer that? Yeah, all it takes is one, but there was no ‘one’ for Schroeder, for example.
agree
LMFAOOO hell yeah I suspected as much!
the deadline for the Sexton extension has passed, maybe he’ll be traded this year sign-and -traded next summer or maybe some team will low-ball offer and we’ll match?
man just perusing these deals seem crazy?!?!?!? 10 mil.yr for Grayson Allen and about the same for Landry Shamet!? i guess that’s about what a low-end rotation player costs these days but damn… seems like a lot.
It’s funny listening to fans of other teams talk about Sexton. They look at his numbers and think the Cavs need to pay him. But when you watch literally every game he plays, like some of us masochists here, it seems clear that he doesn’t generally have a huge impact on winning games. I remember something Carter Rodriguez said, I believe before the Sexton draft had happened, but when it seemed likely the Cavs were going to take him. He said something along the lines of, “my fear is he’ll be good, but it won’t matter”. I think we’ve seen… Read more »
that’s the thing, if he were actually good, then they’d be winning but they’re not!!! LMFAOOO which was my point about the Van Gundy/Jackson bit that they do about super stars on the pod. He’s a bench guard who gets first option usage because of a lack of talent and a lack of good coaching. OTOH I might eat my words if the JA big 3 lineup turns out to be as good as it was in the preseason, so IDK LMFAOOO maybe they should’ve pay him? I think the only way they can get their answer is with a… Read more »
it will be smart to pay him IF there is a huge jump in salary cap. with the current cap, he is not worth it.
another consideration: if there is going to be a big jump, you can bet most or all agents are waiting for it, and it will ignite a frenzy player movement, or who knows what.
yup agreed, although Kawhi already bucked that trend of waiting to get more money supposedly.
The money’s good, and I’ve heard rumors that there could be a jump of 70% in one year if there’s no smoothing. it’s def insane money!!!

If you want to play fantasy basketball this year and weren’t in the league last year, let me know!
Pacers just signed Brogdon for four years for about what Cavs would have to pay Sexton. Call me crazy, but I’d prefer Brogdon.
Rather a two year extension, but four years total.
definitely, although Brogdon’s foot better be OK
Yo CLF – I’ve been MIA but I saw some interest in rekindling the fantasy BBall fire this year a few threads ago. Want me to restart last year’s league?
I gotta defend my title!!! Can’t forget the epic victory on a stat-correction rebound.
I’ve been meaning to email you about this
yeah, DanK is about it, so if you don’t mind lets do it!
yeah that was so crazy, i was the winner for like 1.5 days and then, nope! epic finish though, gotta love it. also, about all of us were Cavs homers which was added fun (I think I had Okoro on my roster about 3/4 of the year)
