Live Thread: Cavs @ Wizards

The Cavs make their way to the nation’s capitol to take on the Washington Wizards, in the aftermath of Ricky Rubio’s tragic season-ending knee injury (get well soon Ricky!). The Cavs will be without their top three point guard options (Rubio, Darius Garland, Collin Sexton), so it’s hard to see exactly what Coach J.B. Bickerstaff can do to solve that problem. Clearly, Kevin Pangos will be asked to shoulder the biggest load so far of his Cavs’ tenure. Point Okoro should make an extended appearance after spot duties over Summer League and parts of this season. Could Cavs’ fans finally see Point Center Evan Mobley? Nothing’s off the table as the Cavs try to keep their head above water until they get healthier, as well as possibly acquire some guard depth.
In more positive news, it appears that Dylan Windler and Lamar Stevens will be available tonight, after extended absences with COVID. The Wizards themselves aren’t exactly the healthiest either, but appears that they could have Bradley Beal and Kentavius Caldwell-Pope back from COVID. If the Cavs keep it within single digits and the remaining guys come out healthy, that’s really all that can be asked for.
Tip off is scheduled for 7:00PM ET and the game will be broadcasted on Bally Sports Ohio/Great Lakes. GO CAVS!

I agree fully Nomad. Let’s stay positive. Rubio came straight out and said he didn’t want to be in Cleveland. Obviously this group and the culture that JB has created changed that. I would think Rondo is aching to prove he’s still got something to give, he’s a prideful guy, an NBA champion with lots of grit and then there’s the magic of playoff Rondo. We gave up Valentine, that’s the way to evaluate it. I absolutely want Rondo on my team instead of Valentine.

And there’s still six weeks before the trade deadline to make another move if Rondo isn’t doing the trick — which also gives us another 20 games to figure out how much we should be gunning for the playoffs vs. focusing on next year.
I’ve been a longtime Koby critic, but continue to be impressed by his moves since the Allen trade last season.
I’m all in on Rondo. As long as he buys into the culture, the guy is a winner. Can’t do everything that Saint Ricky did for us, but is more than capable of running the offense for 4 minutes a quarter, tossing up lobs to Tower City and playing pick-and-pop with K Love.
I’m also curious to see how DG-Rondo minutes work if JB continues to play with that like he did with Rubio.
Also, file under useless arcana but we just filled one RR spot with another RR. There’s gotta be some good juju in that, right?

I like Rondo as well. It will be interesting to see how well he can still play. Can be a good defender and is a good passing PG.
I still want to use the DPE to sign at least one player. Carrying 2 guys on the roster who cannot play is gonna be tough on depth. Especially with COVID, but even without.
I think they’re keeping their powder dry till trade deadline.

Well, was hoping they would not want a player back at all. Top 55 protected 2nd, etc. They are just going to cut him. Though he can shoot a little.

nice one — hoping for some Playoff Rondo sightings and his participation in some wide margins of victory in Boston
and it’s goodbye Denzel Valentine, fun while it lasted! He did have a way of sliding around screens and defending the stepbacks, uncorking fearless threes when everyone else was too in their own heads. Thinking about the decision making if he ever shares the floor with Russell Westbrook boggles the mind!
In light of Rondo joining the Cavs soon, I started thinking about a starting line-up of players that were the strangest to see in a Cleveland jersey.
PG: Rose
SG: Wade
PF: Kemp
C: Shaq
Who fits best as SF? Most of these names came about during the Lebron era so obviously that wasn’t a need at that time. Also, Rose beat him out for the starting spot, but special shout out to Baron Davis.
Isaiah Thomas on that list. Maybe Crowder at small forward? Antawn Jamison maybe.
Honestly, Kemp was a Cav long enough that Jamison might make more sense there.

Yeah, that thought crossed my mind… but at the time Kemp on the Cavs blew my mind. He was one of my favorite players as a kid.
Thought about Jamison then I just got bummed thinking about how hurt Z was by that whole ordeal.
I would go with ‘Twan. IT & Crowder were strange, but were gone so fast.
Maybe Crowder is at the top of my “Cav I disliked the most” list
LOL. That would be a good list to put together. Another one I was trying to come up with was a starting 5 of only-in-Cleveland heroes. Guys like Delly and Andy… hard workers overcoming the odds, finding their role. LOL, need to be more productive with my time.

Cavs working on a deal for Rajon Rondo (for something like a player on a non-guaranteed contract, a second round pick and cash), as per Woj. Is that why Denzel Valentine sat tonight? I would prefer to keep Stevens.
Saw–and feel–the same thing. He’s not on Rubio’s plane, but he would solidify the decision-making on the second unit, and his three-point shooting has improved since his Celtics days…
