Live Thread: Hawks @ Cavs
2021-12-31The compromised Atlanta Hawks come to the shores of Lake Erie to take on the patchwork Cavs for a game in which both teams will be looking to end recent skids. The Cavs will get back Jarrett Allen apparently, but will still be without Darius Garland and Cedi Osman. The list of Atlanta players out is too much to list, but suffice it to say they will have their best player Trae Young and starting center Clint Capela. If the Cavs want to grind out a win, they will have to do it with hellish defense and opportunistic transition offense.
Tip off is scheduled for 7:30PM ET and will be broadcasted on Bally Sports Ohio/Great Lakes. GO CAVS!

Leading a title winning team in scoring (for the Finals) 3+ times is a pretty select list:
7 times: George Mikan (’47 Chicao American Gears, ’48 Minneapolis Lakers (NBL), ’49 Lakers (BAA), ’50, ’52, ’53, ’54 Lakers (NBA).
6 Times: Micheal Jordan. Chicago Bulls (1991, ’92, ’93, ’96, ’97, ’98).
4 Times:
Tom Heinsohn: Celtics 1957, ’59, ’60, ’61.
LeBron James: Heat ’12, ’13, Cavs ’16, Lakers ’20
3 Times:
Sam Jones: Celtics 1963, ’64, ’65
John Havlicek: 1968, ’69, ’74.
Kareem: 1971 Bucks; Lakers 1980, ’85.
Tim Duncan: Spurs 1999, 2003, 2005.
Shaq: Lakers 2000, ’01, ’02.
Extending it down to two times does not add many names.
Olajuwon: Rockets 1994, ’95
Tony Parker: Spurs ’07, ’14
Kobe: Lakers 2009, ’10
Julius Erving: New York Nets ’74, ’76 (ABA)
Leroy Edwards: Oshkosh All-Stars ’41, ’42 (NBL)
Robert McDermott: Fort Wayne Pistons ’44, ’45 (NBL).
I never understand why Edwards is not a Hall of Famer. College Player of the Year (Kentucky). 3 NBL MVPs. 3 NBL scoring titles. 2 Titles. 6 Finals appearances. 8 times all league. 6 first.
I forgot Bill Russell (1962 & ’66).
And Havlicek did it without usually being a starter.
Well, no. Not in ’68, ’69, and ’74. He was most certainly a starter. That 6th man stuff was in the rear view.
In ’68 only Russell played more regular season minutes. 20.7/6.7/4.7 for Hondo. Finals: 27.3/8.7/6.7 in 48.5 mpg w/ 40/10/7 in game 6 clincher.
1969, Havlicek 2nd in regular season minutes to Russell. 21.7/7.0/5.4 regular. 28.3/11.0/4.5 in 48.0 mpg 8n Finals.
Post Russell era, Havlicek had some HUGE regular season numbers.
1970: 24.2/7.8/6.8.
1971: 28.9/9.0/7.5
1972: 27.5/8.2/7.5
1973: 23.8/7.1/6.6. Cowens MVP.
1974: 22.6/6.4/5.9; 26.4/7.7/4.7 Finals MVP.
All defensive teams introduced in 1968-69.
2nd team all defense: 69, 70, 71.
1st team all defense: 72, 73, 74, 75, 76.
13 straight all star games: 1966-78
11 All NBA teams: 4 1st (71-74)
The Browns drafted Havlicek, even though he hadn’t played FB since HS, with the understanding he could decide between QB and WR. Pretty sure he went to camp for a week or so before deciding on BB.
Havlicek was my favorite when I was in about ninth grade. I used to try his move of driving to the corner for a half turn jump shot — not a good idea. Shooting when you are open is a lot easier. The “this guy looks too old to bother to cover” look works better.
I was thinking he had plenty of minutes but stayed as sixth man.
BTW, a couple decades age, SI had an article on Martin’s Ferry (maybe?) HS back in the day when Havlicek, Phil Niekro, Joe Niekro, Lou Groza, and Lou’s brother (All American BB at UK) were on the same HS football team (Phil was QB), and Phil Mazeroski was in the next town.
Pour one out for Sam Jones. 10-time champ with the Celtics, died at age 88. Though mainly a SG, also started at SF & PG on some title teams. Would have won at least 1 Finals MVP had they had them in his heyday.
One of the great clutch players of all time. Still holds the record for most points in a Finals game 7 (47). Had one of the all-time scoring duel games with Oscar Robertson in Game 7 of the ECF (Oscar 43, Sam 47). Led 3 straight Celtics finals teams in scoring (’63, ’64’, ’65).
If you see top 50/75 players lists. Or top 10 SG lists without Sam Jones on them, the person making the list is an idiot.
For my money, easily a superior player to AI, Allen, Reggie Miller types. Though the career is shorter. But man oh man, the number of clutch shots and HUGE playoff performances is LONG. Plus good to great D and versatility.
We took a flyer on Pangos. It didn’t fly, and there is no sign that it ever will. Time to pay him off and let him go back to where he belongs.
On the other hand, Goodwin can play. He is younger, tougher, much better, and might turn out to be a rotation player. We gotta keep him. Anyone know how this can work money/salary cap/?? wise?
I didn’t see the game. Is Goodwin a possible option above Rondo? I couldn’t have read more mixed comments on him, and that goes for both on and off the court. The Lakers are thrilled he is gone; he was bought out his last two locales; he pushed the Clippers into the playoffs before that. Could he meld with our second unit and get Love and co. their shots? Will he play hard again?
dunno. that is why Goodwyn coming out of the blue has me psyched. I listened to a couple chunks on the radio. Jim Chones was digging it, said he looks as good as Okoro on D.
Apparently Goodwyn was on a ten day with the Raptors, never played, and when the 10 days was up this morning, the Cavs grabbed him. He probably showed up in time for the game, got introduced around, and played a very solid NBA game. The chances of being a lot better after a couple practices are pretty good.

Used to be backup for Trae at the Hawks too. Had me wondering if he was playing ‘up’ facing his old squad, or maybe knew some of their moves. Problem with that is hardly any of the Hawks regular squad were playing.
Rondo has been poor for LA. They have lacked shooting all year. Russ, Rondo, LBJ, AD, + Dwight/Jordan was UGLY from a spacing standpoint. Defense not great either. Inconsistent PT.
But he can at least run the offense.
I know we are around 3.3 million under the tax line.
Pangos is on a guaranteed deal, we’d have to pay him if we cut him. And with 2 guys out for the year, I’d think using a Disabled Player exception to sign at least one more player makes sense. But paying Goodwin, another guy, and Pangos might bump us into the tax.
Bottom line, I’d apply for, and use, a Disabled Player Exception to sign Goodwin. That way we don’t have to cut anyone. And we’d still have some eiggle room to sign another vet min player if needed.
Happy new year CtB and co. Here’s hoping things slowly start to de-crapify. Peace!!!
HAPPY NEW YEAR BW!
Not that I place much credence on raw box score plus minus as it is often incredibly misleading, but Pangos was -14 tonight. The only other player close to double digit negatives was Markkanen at -11. Which makes it likely both guys actually were pretty bad tonight if the rest of the team was positive or only slightly negative. And by eye test pangos was way out of his depth.
And Lauri stunk bad tonight. Score is no surprise.
That isn’t his fault, per say–this was never supposed to be his role. I hate seeing the Cavs’ success take a hit here, but with Garland out, we’re missing an all-star now–a big drop-off to a European journeyman.
No doubt, but I see more promise in Goodwin than Pangos regardless.
He wasn’t great, but he’s a break glass PG option. I have little doubt the Cavs win this with DG, and they probably win it with Cedi even with DG out.
damn, NOMAD brings up a good point check this out:

Pangos wide open. afraid to shoot. Ridiculous.
Yep.
I’ve seen enough. He has to go.
Agreed. I don’t mind you missing, the best do, but man up and shoot it with confidence. That’s what gritty guys do.
I saw more out of Goodwin than Pangos. Thoughts?
Yep. Agree 100%.
Completely.
yup, particularly defensively i think… Goodwin just able to hang on that end more.
Boards, playmaking, fts.
Pangos double clutches every time.No confidence.Just shoot the ball.
damn, Pangos had a look just missed.
that third quarter was the downfall… but great fight otherwise.
One of the suckiest losses I’ve seen.
Pelicans and Wizards earlier were both way worse.
Well that was an awful draw up bailed out by a very smart goodwin cut.
He’s been confident in his choice making.
I like the quick 2. Play the FT game.
would like it better if they had one more timeout.
And I don’t think that was an option. If it was took too long. Barely able to get it in. Almost another 5 second violation to add to the count.
Yep. Agreed. Not a lot of shooting other than Kev.
Goodwin > Pangos?
Monster game from Love, 35/11/4 off the bench.
Yup, think so!!!
Last chance to tie. Lets see what jb comes up with. This is where playoff coaches make their money.
we got a shot…. got to get a three for Love off the jump, don’t let them foul.
Bit rushed in that love trey. Still had time would have liked to look for an easier shot
oh no, too impatient Love
Huge stop
RIM PROTECTION LETS GOOOOOOOOOOOO
Whatever happens, great to see Kevin Love on fire.
Big shot love. Keeps slim chance of hope.
One more foul on Trae would be nice.
He have four or five. Thought he had four.
5
LOVE CLUTCH THREEE LETS FUCKING GOOOOOOOOOOOO!!!!!!!
HUUUUUGE
Dagger. Young.
nice finish Mobley, but need to double Trae WHAT ARE YOU DOING JB!!!
Ok, gotta stop, now put them in JA.
GREAT PASS MOBLEY!!!! GOT THE FOUL!
Boy we must have given up 6 points in fts the last half of this qtr.
Nice effort Goodwin.
MOBLEY HUSTLE!!!!!!!!!!!!!! LETS GO TWO POSSESSION GAME!
We gotta be like 55% on fts these last few minutes
plenty of time, need stops… double Trae live with the results.
Last roll of the dice.
Well young making shots. Going to be tough if he is making off the dribble pullup treys.
Trae now punking Cavs.
he will meet his demise!!!
GOODWIN FINISH!! LETS GOO !!!!
holy shit great defense and they make a garbage shot
We can’t stop and don’t have enough firepower on o.
Let’s go in teh bonus keep feeding the bigs!!!
Good drive and dish by goodwin
Better use of Allen there
Damn wish okoro could make fts.
ICE HUGE BUCKET!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Ice!!
nice cut Ice, got him some freebies
This game is getting close to out of reach considering how much we are struggling to make plays and get easy shots on offense.
Why are Cavs not able to lob to their talls?
Because pangos can’t play point.
Cavs gaurds aren’t really a threat to score, which is necessary to get that play off.
They are dropping but there have been windows.
There have definitely been windows. They have all been kicked out for 3 pt shots. Cavs giving up their advantage.
Pangos is so bad at being a point guard. Rondo can’t come quick enough.
LOVE RIM PROTECTION!!!!!!!! LETS GOOOOOOOOO
Gonna need 40 from Love
Williams with the leaner foul. Still bad decision by pangos.
HUGE THREE LOVE!!!!
