Cavs: the Podcast Episode #263 (or, The Trade Express)
2022-01-12 Off By Chris FrancisHello again, CtB…
Tonight, a long winter’s night in the dead of January, Nate Smith, the official train conductor of Cavs: the Blog, rounds up two of his best train engineers Elijah Kim and Chris Francis, both of whom with vast experience on the Trade Express, to take stock of three major stories in CavsLand: 1. the Midseason report card, 2. the extension of Koby Altman, and 3. the Chris Fedor tweet on possible trade targets.
Caris LeVert is the obvious one. I’ve discussed their interest in him for about a month now. Other names to watch: Dennis Schroder (there are concerns but he fits for a few reasons), Joe Ingles, Goran Dragic, Kyle Anderson (not sure they’d move him) and, of course, Ben Simmons. https://t.co/LfQXM45rJk

ESPN Sources: Cleveland Cavaliers general manager Koby Altman has agreed to a contract extension through the 2027-2028 season. Altman’s new title will be President of Basketball Operations.

The trio lists their Favorite Things about the first half of the season. They dream a little dream about the improvements they’re looking forward to for the second half of the year. But let’s be honest, the buzz is growing about trade deadline 2022. So hop aboard the Trade Express if you dare, and let the dulcet tones of Cavs: the Podcast take you on a NBA odyssey through the long winter’s night…

I respect you guys and your opinions, but wanting any part of Simmons or Harris is nuts. Both guys are WAAAY overpaid for multiple years.
Simmons won’t even play this year. And he is TERRIBLE in the POs. Mentally weak. And he’s had 4 years to improve. And he is a terrible fit with Mobley & Allen.
Philly fans want Harris gone. That is revealing.
live thread up!
FWIW, the Jazz signed Denzel Valentine. Not a 10 day.
I am a fan of the Altman extension.
DG pick, Allen trade, Rubio trade, and Mobley trade are all great moves.
Not sold in Markannen yet. But it is not as if that move was terrible and is hampering us. And LNJ wanted POs. Ironic.
But we could use some stability. JB and Koby gives us that.
I am not super high on LeVert. He needs the ball to be effective. A taller version of Sexton. Plays better D. Worse shooter from D. I would not trade Sexton & Cedi for him.
Good for Altman. Is this the first GM Gilbert has extended?
Markanaan works his butt off on defense. I would guess that wasn’t the case if you look back at his bulls tenure. When you’re tired all the hitches in your form catch up to you. He either needs fewer minutes or better conditioning. His defense has beenreally impressive…so i’m gonna throw this one to coach not adjusting lineups to give him more rest. You can’t play 8-9 players and expect your defense to remain elite all game.
The rotations are JB’s worst trait. That’s normal for a young coach. But it’s definitely something to keep an eye on. He should be getting better at it as the season goes on.
cool stuff here, think this captures the impact of Rubio on the offense (and Jarrett Allen!)

Damn. Wish Derrick White were on there.
you and me both brother!
IF CLIPPERS ARE SELLERS THEN LET’S GO BRING ” HARD ROCK HOME ” TO THE LAND
have it on pretty good authority the Clippers story is a fabrication unfortunately.
to clarify, realistically theyre just looking to dump Bledsoe, Winslow, maybe Ibaka, maybe Morris… but no one actually good LMFAOOOO
ironically Bledsoe could be a Cavs’ target as a second half rental.
WORLD B FREE YOU LEFT OUT DENNIS RODMAN
Ha! Yeah, let’s swap him in for Delonte.
I always had a soft-spot for Delonte and it’s probably just cruel to make him the butt of jokes given what he’s struggled with in recent years…
I GIVE IT A THUMBS UP DUE TO CREATING A STABALITY WITHIN THE FRANCHISE—WHICH I THINK YOUNGER PLAYERS NEED // WANT—ALSO SEEMS LIKE THE COHESIVENESS// RESPECT FROM PLAYERS // COACHES// TO KOBY ARE ALL INTACT —-IS IT POSSIBLY TOO LONG OF AN EXTENION—YES —BUT UNCLE DAN AS WE ALL KNOW WON’T HESITATE TO ” PAY COACHES// GM’S ‘ OFF AND LET THEM RIDE INTO THE SUNSET AND HAVE ….” MORE BEER –WINE PLEASE ” —MAN I NEEDED TO BE A CAVS COACH :-)
LMFAOOO 100% NOMAD!!!
Btw, Raoul, I meant to confirm that yes, my trade suggestion yesterday was a joke!
I’ve sometimes forgotten what humor looks like since March, 2020, too!
But as long as we’re talking about culture, how about Garland, Mobley and Allen for KPJ, Gilbert Arenas and Latrell Sprewell? Maybe bring back Delonte and Ricky Davis while we’re at it?
OK, I think this horse has now been beaten well past death, glue factory, reincarnation, etc…
the large contracts for JB and KA are interesting timing…i hope this isnt like other contract extension given out early and then things start to crumble. still lot of basketball left and games will get more competitive after ASB…maybe Gilbert wanted to get things locked up but still think those two have LOT to prove.
VERY GOOD POINT SIMMO——-WE ALLL WANTED KPJ TO SUCCEED HERE —( AND EVEN HOPING HE CAN STILL TURN IT AROUND )——BUT IT DOES APPEAR THAT ” HISTORY ” WILL CONTINUE TO REPEAT ITSELF——–THIS WOULD HAVE BEEN A CONSTANT DISTRACTION TO THE CAVS AND REALLY HINDERED THEIR CULTURE GROWTH APPROACH// CONCEPT
The one factor regarding Altman’s extension not mentioned IMHO: being firm on character. The buck stopped with him on the KPJ decision.
If I were him in a performance review? “Hey look, character is key and I made a call based on that. I took a lot of heat for it, a lotta people didn’t like it. But I think if we look at how things have turned out, right now I am very comfortable with the impact of the decision on the team.”
Good call. No one is going to bat 1.000. Admit it didn’t work and move quickly.
yup, can’t disagree.
