Live Thread: Cavs @ Spurs
2022-01-14Good Friday evening CtB!
Tonight, the Cavs are in the Lone Star State to take on the San Antonio Spurs in the first game of a Red River Two-Step to finish off the six game road trip. The Cavs are feeling good after getting one of their best road wins of the year, obliterating the Utah Jazz 111-91. To describe the win as “obliterating” is not hyperbole, just check out this slice of passive-aggressive Twitter beef between Rudy Gobert and Donovan Mitchell:

Hey Donovan, there is a place where greatness is welcome… OK, back to the Cavs. The Cavs are looking to finish off this road trip strongly, and can do so with at least a split between tonight and tomorrow’s back to back. But surely the Cavs are looking to send a message throughout the NBA and win both games… just another challenge the Cavs love to take on and thrive.
The San Antonio Spurs, despite their record, are not a team to take lightly. They are coached by Gregg Popovich after all, a man who hates to lose. They have some dawgs on their team including Dejounte Murray and Jakob Pöltl. They are also desperate for some wins being on a four game losing streak, and just one game outside of the play-in. It wouldn’t be surprising if the Cavs just eek this one out.
There’s some welcome news for the Cavs coming prior to tip off. Isaac “Ice” Okoro and Rajon “Rage on” Rondo are both questionable, so the Cavs could be the healthiest they’ve been since the Ricky Rubio injury. From now until the end of the year, it’ll be important for the Cavs to develop as much chemistry as possible before the playoffs. Unfortunately for the Spurs, they will be without a Nate Smith Trade Target Derrick White as well as former Duke point guard Tre Jones.
Tip off is scheduled for 8:30PM ET and will be broadcasted on Bally Sports Ohio/Great Lakes, GO CAVS!!!
P.S.
Congratulations to José Calderón! Well-deserved and wishing much success!
The Cleveland Cavaliers have hired José Calderón as Special Advisor to the Front Office.
Calderón played for 7 different teams over his 14-season NBA career.
Our paths crossed for a quick minute when he was with the Lakers. He always made time to chat. What a great guy. https://t.co/2pFQqj9wTu

Go Joe B at 4:30!
It’s not a one to one comparison…but imagine the cavs didn’t have Cedi and DG hit buzzer beating 3s this game? We won by 5! I’m happy about the win but not pumped about how tired the bigs are at the end of each game. Our d suffers.
This is a double digit win if the cavs shoot 80% from the free throw line. We blew up our differential earlier in the year by shooting better than that routinely. what the heck happened to our bigs at the free throw line? I don’t expect 80% but I really don’t expect under 60%. That is abysmal.
mid season dead legs, think JB has to find a way to steal rest on back to back in rotation for these guys
I agree with the solution but I don’t agree with the assertion (i know you feel the same way but it bears repeating). JB doesn’t have to “find a way,” as in do something difficult to do. He just has to do it. Put wade in and spell Mobley for 3 mins in the first quarter. Put Windler in and don’t play Lauri 35 mins a game. getting to the playoffs doesn’t mean anything if you play Thibs style basketball. Literally nothing. If you get there on the backs of 8-9 guys you are screwed. . He wasn’t a good… Read more »
amen..
In a few more days, the schedule gets a lot easier. That would be a great time to cut back on PT for the stars.
I agree with you in theory…but we just played a 15 win team and needed major minutes from 7 (love only played 16) guys to win. And we had to watch a winning shot miss to beat the darn Kings. Give me this exact spurs team vs our current cavs in the playoffs in a 7 game series any day. We got outcoached. We shouldn’t be afraid to admit it.
OK, you’re on for $1, I’ll take the Cavs in that series.
Lol fair enough. Talent might overcome. But the spurs had not business competing in this game and we had to hit 2 buzzer beaters to come out on top. That screams cavs 2009 against orlando.
The Spurs are getting top end steroids? Yikes!
Crazy that this game would be a blowout if the Cavs just made their free throws LMFAOOOOOo they dominated the paint offensively.
Congrats Cavs fans!! Great win!!
Thanks.
Thank you WF!!!
Thanks, Pal.
FWIW, only Phoenix, Brooklyn, and Philly have more road wins this year than the Cavs.
They all have 15. We have 14. Can catch them tomorrow.
Weird for a young team to be so good on the road. We have also played 9ne of the tougher schedules to this point AND been one of the hardest hit teams (Win Shares lost) from injuries and COVID.
HaHa — I like where this is going!
Great game. Cavs overcame legs and the defense traveled for a win.
Terrific effort by the starting unit down the stretch. Despite shots not dropping they hung in there and scrapped and switched and got all the defense rebounds.
MURRAY AND DG PUT ON A SHOW TONIGHT!!!
Took care of business. I would like Murray at his position more in the 1990s. I would trade sexton for him in a second though. But that isn’t an endorsement.
Whew!
Good road win vs a hungry team.
Would like to see Ice get more run tomorrow. Though maybe Stevens starts with Lou Dort looming. Hope Rondo is back, though Goodwin was good tonight.
Some burn for Wade/Windler would be good as well.
Nice to have options again.
Definitely hopefully guys stay ready!
I would guess the second night on a b2b would be a good time for a lot of minutes for OWW (Okoro, Wade, Windler)
Gotta admit that’s a nice shot.
Handled that well. Heck of a finish
4-2 ON THE ROAD SECURED, LETS GO FOR 5-1!!!!!
A win tomorrow night would be incredibly impressive. And will mean JB plays Dean Wade at least 10 mins and he has a decent impact
Put Kev in for FTs.
Put in Calderon!
Lol
👏👏👏
Our defense ratcheted up several notches to clamp down in their drive and kick game this quarter. This is a much better than 15 win team. I dont get it.
It’s nuts, isn’t it??
Almost left this one at the free throw line, but I think they’re gonna eek it out.
From 5:37 to 2:18, neither team scored.
WHAT A FINISH DG OVER MURRAY
Damn, all we had to do was not commit a TO there.
Still up 4.
Darius! Great drive!
Lauri actually hit him on the head.
DG a killer
DG CLUTCH
DG the closer!!!
BALL DONT LIE
