RAOUL—-“RUN AND JUMP ” WAS A STRAIGHT UP MAN DEFENSE —WE THEN FORCED THE BALLHANDLER TO REVERSE DRIBBLE // AS SOON AS HE REVERSED WE PUT A QUICK// HARD TRAP ON HIM // STOPPING HIS DRIBBLE// FORCING TO MAKE A DIFFICULT PASS// WE ALSO ROTATED TO THE PLAYERS NEAREST TO THE BALL LEAVING THE ONLY PASS THE FURTHEST AWAY —-IN HIGH SCHOOL IT WAS A LOB PASS MANY TIMES ALLOWING FOR A TURNOVER —-GRANTED THE PROS ARE MORE SKILLED THAN HIGH SCHOOLERS BUT USED SPARINGLY AND ‘SURPRISE’ IT CAN CAUSE A T.O. OR DISRUPT OFFENSIVE FLOW —-JUST SAYING THE HORNETS… Read more »
getting the ball out of Trae’s hands is a great idea as long as none of their secondary playmakers step up and beat us on 4 on 3s. We did this against BRK some but Bruce Brown killed us on short rolls and in passing from the lane. Also, BRK had two primary ballhandlers compared to ATL really one. Send it in Coach NOMAD!!! I like it! let’s gooooo Cavs fans, woof woof woof! Most exciting game since game 7 in the Bay all those years ago.
Yeah, gotta say I’m pretty pumped for this one!
Cavs control Capella, they win I think.
2016 Finals Game 6 was pretty damn exciting, too.
And Finals Game 1 in 2017 — until JR’s brain fart. Oh, JR… oh, humanity.
And Game 7 in first round vs. Pacers in 2018.
But yes, tonight is HUGE. We need COACH NOMAD ON THE BENCH! MORE GATORADE, PLEASE!
yikes! I had forgot about the JR brain fart.
JR played on a college golf team this year!
There is a great video of JR “discussing” vandalizing cars with a protestor. (his BMW).
I am such a big JR Smith stan my friends all believe it’s a homoerotic thing. I will neither confirm nor deny.
Even better than the car vandal video is this video of JR stepping on a wasp’s nest during his first college golf tournament! JR is all of us at our best and our worst.
It was actually really moving to follow him on twitter as he went to college for the first time as a retired player (for the golf), but then started taking his studies seriously and humbly shared his academic highs and lows with the public.
It was actually really moving to follow JR on twitter last year as he went to college for the first time (for the golf), but then got really invested in his academics and shared all his highs and lows as a student with the public.
There’s also a hilarious, classic video of JR stepping on a hornets nest during his first college golf tournament.
I’ve always been a JR fan because — for best and for worst — there’s a little bit of Earl Joseph Smith, III in all of us!
JR doesn’t get nearly enough love/credit for the Cavs’ championship. His mini-barrage coming out of half time to get them back in the game, and then the play on Iguodala to set Lebron up for the Block were every bit as huge as the shot, the block, and the stop.
absolutely !!
cool.
here is my fave. when I was a grad student, I was on an intramural team with four starters from the football team (1 LB and 3 DB). After we made a basket, a couple of us would contest the inbound pass, and hope they threw long!
John Collins ruled out for Friday. Not saying that’s good or bad, but it’s probably good if JA is out or severely hampered.
” THE WILLIS REED ” MOTIVATOR IS ON !!!—–JUST HIS PRESENCE ALONE SHOULD BE A HUGE LIFT—NOT SURE HOW LONG HE CAN GO// HOW EFFECTIVE HE WILL BE ————I LIKED WHAT THE HORNETS WERE DOING TO TRAE—-A “HARD TRAP ” WHEN HE CROSSSED THE HALF COURT LINE —-VERY SIMILAR TO A “RUN AND JUMP ” I ALWAYS USED AND USED WITH SUCCESS——-THINK THE CAVS HAVE TO MIX IT UP // DEFENSES —KEEP TRAE GUESSING// OFF BALANCE
What was the “run and jump”?
I forgot just how huge the dropoff in our D has been since JA went out:
Ahead of the March 6 game against Toronto in which Allen bashed his middle finger on the rim attempting to block a shot, the Cavs boasted a 106.5 defensive rating, which ranked fourth in the league. Since then, Cleveland’s defensive rating has slipped to 117.3, which ranks 21st in the NBA over that stretch.
JARRETT BACK! Man, I hope he’s not too rusty and/or tentative with the finger.
Now can we just get a Sexton April surprise, too?
absolutely no chance on Sexton, his people would be insane to let him play given the upcoming payday.
I was joking about Sexton, but it’s fun to imagine!
it would be CRAZY in the Rock!!!
Woj says it’s still up in the air. No idea what is more accurate, but even if her plays, I’m not expecting him very close to 100%. I certainly hope he can play.
I know we probably didn’t have the assets to get it done, but man it would be a game-changer to have CJ instead of Caris. The deal we probably could (and should) have made instead of Caris is Derrick White. Totally undersung part of Boston’s 2nd half resurgence.
Honestly given what was exchanged in the CJ deal, Cavs could’ve got that done, but it would’ve required sending out a ton of players.
Yeah, I suppose. What do you think — the 1st rounder, Rubio, Cedi and…? It’s a big contract for a 30 year old player, but the homecoming piece would’ve been irresistible and he’s 100% the kind of high-character guy that fits the new Cavs culture. Ah, well. Outfoxed by Griff.
Wade and Sexton IMO, if not maybe Markkanen and Okoro/Windler? IDK, it would been a massive disruption to the team’s personnel regardless.
Kind of goes back to how the Cavs have had to completely switch gears within the course of the season, harder to decide what moves to make in that situation for sure.
I vote for more Stevens minutes, less Okoro minutes. a lot.
Thing with Ice is that he’s so hot and cold (pun semi-intended) that it’s hard to not still give him a shot — just on a very short leash. Basketball Genius Terry Pluto is advocating for starting Love and moving Ice to the second-unit. I don’t know how we get any scoring in the second unit with that lineup, but we have to do something to change our first-quarter habits.
It’s not the WORST idea, shifting Lauri to the three, but then you’re relying on LeVert to guard Trae and with his propensity for foul trouble, I feel like it doesn’t last long. Also, Hawks would put Love in every p/r or flare his guy to wing/corner for open threes. But yeah, to your point, the bench is then a disaster. Which may be fine if you intersperse starters. Feel like Cedi is the answer here and Love first off bench. Cedi isn’t gonna try to do too much with LeVert and Garland on the floor and will run the… Read more »
Ice has had some pretty good games making Trae’s life miserable.
good point — D shows up more consistently than O. maybe less for LaVert?
Also CJ is balling, holy crap…
Herb Jones was one of the real steals in last year’s draft. Just crazy good.
It’s amazing, to find an All-NBA defense player in the second round, great for team building at such a low cost. It’s so funny also how some people talk like second-round picks just don’t matter at all.
think it’s less about not valuing 2nd round picks and more about how NBA teams seem to devalue older, four-year college guys.
Because clearly he should’ve been chosen in the first round, and still was chosen top 5 in the 2nd round, which is a sought after pick esp for teams who don’t want to hand out the extra year of guaranteed money in the first round contract.
Totally great point about devaluing 4 year college/older players. You’re right about the early second round as opposed to late second round value and the contract guarantee.
Those 2nd round picks can be useful.
and undrafted guys.
Friday is gonna take a heck of an effort from the players…but probably even more work from the coaches in prep. The slow start makes a bit of sense against the nets just from a first playoff experience standpoint. But starting slow against the gun slinging hawks is unacceptable. I think the cavs have a good chance but hawks are likely going to be (rightly so) favored
“Cavs don’t play with enough physicality”, could be worse, could be Charlotte.
LMFAO their perimeter defense could be worse than Cleveland’s!
It is, just on pure effort level.
If the Cavs lose Friday, at least it won’t be to a team that pays IT.
TRAE YOUNG DOING HIS BEST “LEVERT ‘ IMITATION——- I WOULD TAKE M HARRELL ON MY TEAM ANYTIME !!!
Honestly think if Cavs lose Friday and miss out on playoffs it would be massive disappointment..even with injuries they were still in playoff contention and most recently fell into ‘play in’ so yah they need to win Friday.
JUST CURIOUS—HOW MANY OF YOU ARE OK WITH A COMPETITIVE LOSS FRIDAY NIGHT AND STILL RETAINING THE PACERS PICK—I AM OK WITH THAT — I WOULD LIKE A “W” JUST AS MUCH AS THE REST OF YOU—BUT YOU HAVE TO ADMIT THERE IS A “SIVER LINING “–KEEPING THE PICK—BY LOSING —-“STEALTH TANK PREVAILS ” !!
Would be a real bummer for me. Retaining the pick is fine but that’s too much of a crap shoot for me to be consoled by.
It’s not nothing as consolation prizes go.
I think retaining our pick is the best scenario to improve the team.
If I could undo the Levert trade I would. I think a useful player could have been had with the Rockets’ pick as well.
I was not a fan of the propised Levert interest at the time. Some of his ball handling & P&R metrics convinced me it could work. Having seen him up close, if more sour than I was initially.
I think Atlanta beats us. We have a shot vs Charlotte.
Yes, keeping the pick would allow the team to amass more talent but the ceiling of our team is gonna be tied to the ceiling of DG, Mobley +/- JA/JB. There’s not really a quantitative way of measuring how much playoff experience contributes to a player’s growth but eventually the amassed talent actually has to go out and learn how to win in high pressure situations. The more experience that DG and Mobley can get the better. Same goes for the coaching staff. Maybe it’s also a wake up call for players like Okoro that only play 13 minutes in… Read more »
Agreed, good thoughts Vintage
The Nets and Hawks games are essentially PO games, no matter what the NBA says.
Whether we play 2, 4, or 6, it is valuable experience.
LEO YOU MAKE SOME GOOD POINTS –AS USUAL—HAVE TO DISAGREE WITH YOU ON ALLEN —WOULD NOT WANT TO JEOPARDIZE A MORE SERIOUS INJURY AND LOSE HIM FOR POSSIBLE PLAYOFFS -( NOT SURE HOW CLOSE HE IS ) OR EVEN WORSE IF INJURY WOULD BE MORE SERIOUS // LOSING HIM FOR THE START OF NEXT SEASON
Okoro needs some offensive arsenal to make opp. teams think about covering him…otherwise leaving him wide open is just a lost cause…I wouldnt mess with the lineup or rotation…guys just need to step up…if Levert can drop 20+ on less shots and Markk can be better, Cavs should be in good shape. Also Allen should play Friday, even if its for 15 minutes.
RUBIO ALSO WOULD HAVE MADE A HUGE DIFFERENCE
100%, everyone on the roster looked better playing with Rubio :(
AGREE—I BELIEVE MIKEO—YOU AND I HAVE BEEN THE MOST STOUT SUPPORTERS OF ICE –SO WHEN WE BOTH START TO “WAN” A LITTLE OF THE SUPPORT —HE NEEDS TO UNDERSTAND THIS OFF SEASON IS SOOOOO CRITICAL FOR HIM TO IMPROVE ———–I AM GOING TO PREDICT// WAGER A HAWKS VICTORY TONIGHT —WHICH WILL MAKE WINNING EVEN MORE OF A CHALLENGE THIS FRIDAY
Am listening right now, but just a couple of comments on the game. there are few bigger Okoro optimists than me, but he needs to bring something with some consistency next season. It’s not enough at this level to just play hard. (Which he does) He’s still super young, but he needs to make a jump. Cavs Wings were cheeks. DG and Mobes showed themselves up to the moment, no surprise. DG should set his sights on All NBA. Next year. I think he can do it. Pretty amazing, really, that they could come back and make the Nets sweat… Read more »
THANKS GUYS FOR ” STAYING UP ” TO DO THE PODCAST—————REALLY LIKE THE KID—HAVE SUPPORTED// DEFENDED HIM FROM DAY 1——-BUT THIS OFF SEASON IS VERY CRUCIAL NOT ONLY FOR ICE BUT ALSO THE CAVS—-HE NEEDS TO MAKE A HUGE LEAP——HE IS A ” TEASER ” HE WILL GO IN STRETCHES WHERE HE WILL SCORE 15–20 PTS—6-9 BOARDS—3–5 ASSISTS AND THE ” JIMMY BUTLER ‘ SIMILARITIES SURFACE —HE IS STILL YOUNG BUT MAN THIS OF SEASON–” GET THE JOB DONE “———ALLEN GOING TO DO HIS ” WILLIS REED ” IMPERSONATION THIS FRIDAY —-GO CAVS !!!
