Preview/Live Thread: Spurs vs. Cavs Summer League

Welcome to the beginning of the 2022-23 NBA season CtB!

Today the Spurs take on the Cavs in their first Summer League game of the Vegas circuit. All eyes will be on the Cavs’ 14th pick Ochai Agbaji as fans will get their first glimpse of the lottery pick. One of the interesting things that has been reported is how Summer League coach Mike Gerrity will employ Agbaji more as a primary or secondary playmaker.

Summer League is the time for experimentation, so it’ll be interesting to see how Agbaji reacts being thrown into a fire that he’s never really experienced at Kansas.

The other main attraction has to be Evan Mobley’s brother, Isaiah Mobley. He’s a do-it-all big from USC who will get his first taste of NBA action. While he and Agbaji are the main Summer League attractions, here’s a quick preview of the rest of the players on the roster:

Ashton Hagans: A ball guard from Kentucky, who’s an excellent two way playmaker. Gets to the line, but is not the most efficient scorer/shooter. He was a turnover machine at Kentucky, so decision making will be a major factor in how he performs.

Amauri Hardy: A four year ball guard from UNLV and Oregon. Passing is his best attribute, but struggled to do anything else on the court.

Aaron Henry: A three year forward from Tom Izzo’s Michigan State. He was an intriguing two way wing in his college days, but not the most efficient scorer. He played a lot of minutes for the Delaware Blue Coats of the G-League, where he showed decent defense but little else.

R.J. Nembhard: The guard out of TCU has shown a lot of two way playmaking ability and some scoring flashes from the Cavs’ G-League affiliate, but can he take the next step and secure his place in the NBA?

Malik Osborne: A four year forward from Florida State. He has some tools: shooting touch, ability to get to the rim, and defensive playmaking.

Jamarko Pickett: A four year forward from Georgetown University and played with the G-League’s Motor City Cruise. A defense first guy who showed some “3 and D” flash with MCC.

Nate Reuvers: A four year big from Wisconsin. He’s a defense only big who struggled to score efficiently in college.

Amar Sylla: A 20 year old international player from Senegal. He’s a defense first big in spite of being a bit undersized.

Cam Young: A three year shooting guard by way of Quinnipiac. He put up impressive numbers as a do-it-all guard in college, and was a scoring machine for the Memphis Hustle of the G-League. This is the guy to watch outside of Agbaji and Mobley.

Luke Travers: a big guard by way of the Perth Wildcats of the NBL Australia. An all around guard that does many things well, but struggles to score efficiently.

Josh Hall: a young wing player from Durham, NC who saw very limited action on the Oklahoma City Thunder two seasons ago. He also stopped for a cup of coffee with the Toronto Raptors G-League affiliate.

That’s all for your roster run down, so sit back, relax, and enjoy the action! The game will be televised nationally on NBA TV or on ESPN3 of the ESPN app at 5PM Eastern time, GO CAVS!
