Podcast 275: Convalescent Jonesing
2022-08-19Chris Francis and Nate Smith dust off the podcast microphones after an almost two month absence. While they were convalescing from viral and life injuries, they’ve been jonesing for some Cavs Basketball.
To slake the roundball thirst, the CtB faithful have been catching up on youtube videos, pro-am highlights, and international play of all your Cavalier favorites. Chris and Nate go through most of the roster and talk about what the next season holds in store for these guys. Topics include: Lebron’s Extension, and does it rule out a trade to Cleveland? ; is Okoro’s rumored upskilling real?; what will Collin Sexton’s role (and contract) be?; is second-year Mobley going to shoot like a young KD (in results or form)?; who plays backup point guard?; who gets cut or traded? (we’re looking at you Dylan, Cedi, and Lamar); and are there minutes for rookie Ochai Agbaji?
It’s a pretty loose and casual conversation between guys trying to dust the rust off their vocal cords.
As always, check us out below, download the full audio file, or listen on Apple Podcasts, Google Play, Stitcher, TuneIn, Spotify, and coming soon, RedCircle.
new post up!
Isn’t that exactly what he turned down from the Cavs last season?
https://twitter.com/ShamsCharania/status/1565425087351865347?s=20&t=kndRHQexBkYQFvVlgljuWQ
some reality therapy kicked in?
Probably. Betting Ainge trades him to Dallas or elsewhere soon after he’s trade eligible…
Although Shams or Woj tweeted that Jazz consider Lauri, Sexton, and Agbaji as keepers for their rebuild, so who knows.
https://twitter.com/tomhaberstroh/status/1565437491900981249?s=21&t=KqmTeqDq3ciXNgr7OyVoqQ
Who is that? Bronnie?
Yep, and with him gets you his pop.
Unlikely but that would be wild.
I guess the Cavs can always trade Mitchell, if it doesn’t work out, to recoup some picks.
I love the trade. I like Sexton and he would fit this team but do you want to pay a 6th man 18mil a year? Lauri played well at times but for as big as he is I expected better rebounding #’s and at times seemed soft to me. Ochai was a solid pick but at 14 I would have went younger with upside if the trade wasn’t an option. The picks, gotta remember, they realistically should be late teens or worse with the team we had if we make the playoffs. Are three future first round picks who are… Read more »
Don’t know much about the pick swaps but if those are 1sts and in the Cavs favor that’d be nice.
Utah has the option to swap, it’s not automatic
The picks aren’t necessarily so useful for drafting players for the roster, more as trade assets. This had better work out for the Cavs, since they will be pretty hamstrung on moves going forward.
Not saying it’s a good or bad trade, you don’t often get a chance to grab a guy like Mitchell with years left on his contract. We’ll have to wait and see.
My trepidation will prove unfounded if the Cavs are back in the finals for several years. One could argue that Garland and hopefully Mobley are ready to be superstars right now, and waiting for their era to start is risking a major injury before it starts.
But it does seem like a lot.
MIKEO—AGREE IT IS TIME FOR ICE TO “PUT UP OR SHUT UP OR SHIP OUT ” AND WE HAVE BEEN 2 OF THE DIE HARD” ICE” SUPPORTERS HERE AT CTB
WEST COAST —YOU MAKE A VERY GOOD PT ABOUT “THE OTHER MOBLEY “–POSSIBLY THEY HAVE CONFIDENCE IN HIM TO SOMEWHAT REPLACE LAURI
Lauri showed some real promise in the playoff games, and the Euro tournament this summer. I would be a lot happier if it had been Ice instead.
I’d hate to be watching that Jazz team a ton of games this season…
Well,c t b needed something to stir up the conversation,,,,,,this should do it.
That was my first thought too!
Mitchell is 26, 3 years left on his contract, a perennial all star, a clutch scorer, again, a clutch scorer. I hate giving up Lauri, but truth is he was in Mobley’s way, maybe both Mobleys way. Minnesota, albeit might be a historically bad trade, gave up way more for Gobert. I’d much rather have Mitchell. Draft picks are wishful thinking, Mitchell is a proven product and could potentially rise to superstardom with the Cavs cast around him and Mobley and Garland might become superstars as well because of Mitchell and his gravity. I think Altman isn’t squandering our time… Read more »
Short list of guys who can put up 40+ on any given night and I think Mitchell is one of them.
(He can also give up 40 just as easily but let’s not think about that part)
Alright! Glass 3/4 full!
Who plays the 3?? Okoro and Levert both undersized and now we’re back to having no 3-point shooting. Agbaji and Lauri were our best floor-spacers.
Mitchell is a high volume 3 point shooter.
1. Will Mitchell play D/commit?
2. Did Gilbert see Bron’s extension and say, F-it. Get me a “star”?
3. We got options at guard. Does JB know what to do with that? Or will we grind Rubio’s hamstrings to dust???
Just one man’s opinion.
https://twitter.com/BobbyMarks42/status/1565427608581509120?s=20&t=aSHKh8_siBHop0JCza_jzQ
Home Run. At best this is a double.
Lebron might do his “Coming Home” in 3 years so no sure thing Mitchell leaves.
When he’s 50?
Why would Utah care?
Pick swaps, I assume.
Still processing the trade but I think I’m on board…
Couple thoughts:
1) Mitchell has shown he can show up in big moments and perform well under pressure. This is kinda the going rate for perennial all-stars, esp still in their prime
2) Our big 4 are set. Still need some wing depth – not sold on Okoro, Levert, Cedi. Findings role players should theoretically be easier than finding stars though.
3) Thank god no more Collin Sexton debates.
Agree. Amen on #3…I couldn’t take much more.
If Collin returns to form, it looks bad giving up the extra pick. Hate to lose Lauri, just because I thought the Cavs were unlocking him.
Yeah I’d feel much better if they gave up one less pick or kept Ogbaji.
Lauri didn’t have that dawg in him – nice player, but I’m not too upset he had to be in the trade
Disagree on Lauri. Remember the Atlanta play-in game? Dude put the team on his shoulders when nobody else could get a bucket. And don’t forget that dunk over Jokic!
That’s what I’m saying. He may not be a junk yard dog type but he was special in CLE. I bet he doesn’t hit the same level in Utah.
I remember when he was bricking a bunch of shots against the Nets in the other play-in game lol
I honestly have no idea how to feel yet either, but this sure as heck helps take some pressure off of DG, and that’s a good thing.
I think I would have preferred moving LeVert over Markenen or Ogbaji
no kidding!
Time for Okoro to step up.
Agree 100%. He might be more important to the trade being a success than Mitchell
IF WE ARE COMPETING FOR A CONFERENCE TITLE FOR THE NEXT 3-5 YEARS –ALL WILL BE OK — I THINK —–MY “WORRY ” IS SEXTON REALIZES WHO HE IS —BECOMES 6TH MAN OF THE YEAR FOR A LONG TIME—-LAURI COMES BACK EVEN BETTER —-AGBAJI BECOMES DANNY GREEN “THE 2ND ” AND BECOMES A LEGIT 3 PT THREAT FOR THE NEXT DECADE OR SO
If that is our worst case scenario, I will take it. The Cavs now have THREE players who will in short time be among the top five at their positions and a fourth as complimentary as they come.–all locked up for at least three years. By all accounts, they are hungry, like playing together, and have a strong veteran presence behind them.
I like the guys they traded–but this core will be able to do things they could not. Higher basement, higher ceiling.
If Mitchell is who he’s been, I think it sets us up for a decent 3 year run. Look at Harden, Kyrie and Westbrook trades. 3 picks might just be what it costs to get a perennial all star. And frankly, we don’t draft well consistently enough. Mitchell feels more of a sure thing. Little guards HUGE front court here we come…
Mitchell doesn’t seem to me like a prime Harden, Kyrie, or Westbrook. And it’s 3 future picks AND this year’s pick.
Look at the recent Harden trade. I’d say he’s lost a step. Still cost a lot. Feel like Mitchell is more well rounded than Westbrook, and who knew Kyrie was a headcase (maybe Cleveland did already)…
But the Harden overpriced trade was a bad trade. Now the Cavs are (maybe) overpaying
Cavs solve their Sexton problem, and the positive is I never need to entertain the tiresome Sexton conversation again. Mitchell is probably the best version of what optimists think Sexton could be. Don’t think I love this trade, though. That is an awful lot to give up, as far as draft compensation. And for a guy who may not be happy to be going to Cleveland. (I have no idea there, but pretty well reported that New York is one place he’d like to go) I was worried that Altman was still stealthily involved in Mitchell. Just not convinced he’s… Read more »
Yeah,I’m not sure he moves the needle that far either for 3-4 firsts.
Maybe they can retrade him to the Knicks for a haul?
AGREE WITH CHARLIE E—OK WITH THE PLAYERS TRADED–( ALTHOUGH I THINK LAURI WAS GOING TO COME BACK EVEN BETTER THAN LAST YEAR )—3 1ST ARE A CONCERN—ALTHOUGH IF EVERYTHING WORKS OUT THEY WILL BE LOWER 1ST ROUND PICKS AS WE SHOULD BE COMPETING OR AT THE TOP OF EASTERN CONFERENCE —-AND YES I WAS INTRIGUED WITH AGBAJI ——THINK THE CAVS COULD HAVE REQUESTED ANOTHER PLAYER TO BE ADDED IN —–FREES UP THE NUMBER GAME –WE NOW HAVE OPEN SPOTS CORRECT ?
Open spots and no $.
If they didn’t include Agbaji and it was only two first then I would be okay with the deal.
sounds about right. wish the Guard’s FO was running the Cavs.
Dan Gilbert must be back making moves in the FO. This feels like a Gilbert kind of move.
He loves the undersized guards no doubt.
Yikes!
https://www.espn.com/nba/story/_/id/34502825/sources-cleveland-cavaliers-trade-3-first-round-picks-two-swaps-utah-jazz-star-donovan-mitchell
Is this good? Bad? Dunno?
My first thought is that this is way too much. I will be happy to be proven wrong.
I don’t know. For what we are getting that is a whole lot. 3 unprotected #1, a former #1, and this year’s first. Even if you don’t count Collin that’s 4 firsts.
It’s a lot
Yeah what is that! 3 firsts, our first this year, and Lauri AND Sexton…
It better move the needle big time
Never make a deal with Ainge. We got fleeced!
Yikes. Such a lot to give up. OK with the players but I hate giving up all the picks.
That seems like a lot to give up for Mitchell.
OUCH —THINK WE GAVE UP TOO MUCH
Terrible trade
We should get bogdanovic too. We are very short on wings now.
https://twitter.com/shamscharania/status/1565424542574592005?s=21&t=S0dq42NhWisEVV0twZav7A
Did we trade for Mitchell?
Apparently for three first rounders and two swaps? Probably players?
Looks like Lauri, Ochai, and Collin going out
Fun contest between Storm and Aces tonight. Stewart and Wilson putting on a show.
saw some clips, Stewart can shoot the rock!

would Jazz make that trade?
They’d be losing both of their SFs for cheaper but worse talent in Cedi and Dylan. Also coughing up a #1 in a year they might not be competing. Then they have a glut of Gs in Mitchell, Conley, JC, THT, and then Collin. If the Jazz really wanted Collin would the Cavs do just Bojan? He’s a solid SF that can score. Salary is close. Expiring?
Very highly doubt it. I can’t imagine any team is very interested in Sexton until they know what his contract number is going to be.
That makes no sense for Jazz
Seems like way overvaluing Sexton. You’d never get that much. Plus nobody thinks very high of cedi outside the cavs. Jazz lose a ton and get another tiny guard?
This is based on the Jazz tanking and them wanting to cut salary and supposed interest in sexton. I think They’d probably make them take Clarkson or Conley’s contract (though I think there’s a good chance he ends up a laker) instead of Bogey, since it goes beyond this year, and and non 2023 first is probably more likely. There will be very few people from last year’s Jazz team going into the season.
Sexton might be ideal for a tanking team. There is a 10% chance he will become a really good player to use down the road.
Much more likely he will fire away, put up some big numbers, add some excitement to games, but still cause the team to lose a lot.
This is the plan when tanking.
Why would the Jazz send us a first rounder if they’re tanking, even if it is another team’s? Tanking teams don’t send out picks for veterans.
only if they really wanted to make the deal, which I think is unlikely.
but who knows? maybe the market for Sexton will heat up at the last minute. stranger things have happened.
I see. That makes more sense given that context.
No way we get better players and a pick.
BUCKAROO—–YOU MAKE SOME VERY GOOD PTS ON HOLMGREN— (UNFORTUNATELY ) —-MOBES WAS SOMEWHAT SKINNY LAST YEAR BUT HAD MORE MUSCLE TONE TO WITHSTAND THE NBA PHYSICALITY
A lot of tall skinny guys are fragile, but not all.
Hopefully Mobes is not. But there is no way you want him playing center. Not a good idea.
raoul bro.. yes, no center-banging duties for the talented youngster
NOMADbro.. mobes is thin.. holmgren is a q-tip
haha!
With KD (& Kyrie) presumably back to the Nets, there is not much trade drama left.
The Jazz & how far the tear down goes (Mitchell, Conley, Bogdonavic) and when it goes down.
And the Lakers trying to unload Russ. Probably to Indy for Heild/Turner.
I don’t see a path for Sexton in either deal.
I truly hope that the Lakers start the season with both Russ and Pat Bev on the roster, since that is comedy gold, but I fear that they will find a way to dump RWB somewhere, even if it costs them two firsts, before camp.
I’m ready for the season right now, let’s go.
holmgren.. the danger of drafting toothpicks.. at least windler was not a #2.. can’t say i am shedding tears for okc.. but that’s me.. this is sam bowie territory.. this guy is out for way longer than a year.. perhaps career ending.. time will tell.. toothpick metatarsals is not good for a 7 footer jumping up and down on hardwood

His tweet will not age well.
Allen is a total steal, both in the trade, and contract wise.
I recall defending the contract at the time, when some CtB’ers where calling Koby an idiot for wasting all that money.
I took it as he will never be appreciated to the level that Nate describes in response. The only way he’ll be respected to the highest level is if they start getting deep in the playoffs.
The OP’s comment can be interpreted different ways. I initially took the OP’s comment as Allen will never truly become a star, so his relaxed demeanour fits (and is even perhaps the cause of any underachieving). Kinda pissed me off.
Welcome back fellas, sounds like it’s been a bumpy road.

Sockpuppet.
lol Durant. What a freaking joke.
Corniest superstar in league history.
Cannot argue.
Tank Commander Sexton, you guys are the best!
LMFAO thanks Dave!
A couple weeks ago we bought the spicy taco beer Nate mentioned. No interest in drinking it straight up, but my girlfriend wound up using it to make beer-garitas, mixed with a smoky mescal and it was actually pretty awesome.
Damn that sounds delicious!
looking forward to little mobes surprising some folks..
WHO IS THE GD WITH GOGGLES AND HEAD BAND—-ALSO LOPEZ IS GOING TO HELP MORE THAN WE ANTICIPATED
THANKS BUCKAROO —KNEW I COULD COUNT ON YOU :-)———-THINK WINDLER FEELS ” THE LACK OF CONFIDENCE” IN HIM FROM J.B. I don’t understand how Windler isn’t good. He’s big, he moves well, and his shot looks so pure. Just can’t seem to get it together when it counts.
Same here.
It is a mystery why it comes together for some and not others.
And some times at takes a few years. In every sport, every year there are a few players who kicked around on the margins for a long time, and suddenly become very productive.
I believe he’s gonna find himself at some point, and I hope it’s here.
It might be just as simple as him getting laid. For real. Just relax and believe in himself.
It can’t hurt.
THAT PICTURE IS —-BUCKAROO ” NURSING ” NOMAD AFTER A “ROUGH NIGHT WITH ROLLING ROCK “…………..” MORE BEER PLEASE …………………….ON THE SERIOUS SIDE HOIPE ALL OF YOU ARE DOING BETTER !!!

Good cast.
Bron is done in terms if being the best player on a championship team. He could be Robin/Alfred, but not Batman. He thinks he’s the GOAT (wrongly). He wants to break Kareem’s record (think where that would be if he’d turned pro-earlier) & play with Bronny.
Curry & the Dubs, Giannis & the Bucks, Embiid & the 76ers, the Celts, the Suns, the Heat, and healthy squads in Denver & Clipperland. That’s 8. Throw the Grizz in. KD in Brooklyn is 10th, max.
He put up 30/8/6 last year on 62% TS. Of course he can still be the best on a championship team. He’s still better than Steph, and nobody on the Celts is even close.
agree. LeBron is still close to the best players in the NBA. His problem is that he has very little help on LAL (primarily his own fault — he is the worst GM ever). If he was on an otherwise top team, they would be instant favorites. And he could have done that — not taken the extension, left LA, and played for the minimum for a top team. He might pick up a couple more rings that way, at the cost of maybe $40M / year. Apparently he would rather bump his kitty from around $1B to $1.1B than… Read more »
He plays no D and the Lakers (and LeBron) were terrible closing out games. They lost a TON of close games and Bron came up small in the clutch time and time again.
And that was in the regular season. He cannot close anymore. And he knows it, which is why he wants Kyrie so bad.
He can still put up numbers, but he is nowhere near Giannis/Jokic/Embiid in terms of closing. Tatum pre-Finals was way better. Curry is better. KD is better. Morant is better. As a closer.
good point
