Live Thread: Nets @ Cavs
2022-12-26Good evening CtB!
The Cavs are welcoming NBA Champion Kyrie Irving and the Brooklyn Nets to the frozen shores of Lake Erie for a massive, nationally televised Eastern Conference clash and current battle over the three seed in the playoffs. There’s probably no hotter team in the NBA than the Nets, it would be a massive feather in the cap for this young Cavs team to take down one of their prime adversaries in pursuit of an NBA championship.
The Nets will be missing Seth Curry and former Cav “Smokin’ Joe” Harris, while the Cavs will still be missing Dean Wade. This game will feature a top five offense (Nets) matching up against the best defense in basketball (Cavs). The Nets move the ball extremely well, the Cavs will have to be locked in and make the extra effort on defense. Conversely, the Nets are the worst rebounding team in the NBA, the Cavs need to punish this tiny team with their big boys. If there’s not a concerted effort to get Tower City going, they won’t have a chance to win.
Tip off is scheduled for 7:00PM Eastern time and will be broadcasted live and nationally on NBATV, and locally on Bally Sports Ohio/Great Lakes, Go Cavs!
Cap up!
Great points from the CtB crew. I like Stevens and hold some hope for Okoro, but neither is a starting 3 on a playoff team. I don’t know if Wade is that player either. Frustrating to watch teams absolutely ignoring our 3 and making life hell for DG and Mitchell. We’re not at Milwaukee or Boston’s level yet, maybe it’s better to just be patient, continue to develop our young core and make a move off season. Even with a trade now I don’t see us getting out of the east.
i find it hard to believe there’s no one in on the Charge that could score more points than Okoro and Stevens in any given game and/or situation. I think they annointed Stevens with the ‘Junkyard Dog’ even though he doesn’t provide much, and they can’t admit they screwed up the Okoro pick from two years ago.
We have GSW’s 2nd this year, if it is a better pick than ours. If Steph is out a while & they miss the POs, we could be picking around 40.
Stevens should in no way be starting/ playing big minutes other than in very particular circumstances. The Stevens/ Mobley minutes are getting boatraced. And definitely not Stevens/ Okoro/ Mobley. JB can either get this through his head or he can keep getting his brains beat in by the good teams. If not for DG going off, they lose last night by 20+. That trash lineup leading to the end of the first half absolutely cost them the game. Gets pretty old seeing the same crap over and over. If the Cavs could get Bog from the Pistons, it would be… Read more »
FWIW, per 100 possessions:
DG/DM/LS/EM/JA: -3.4 (144 minutes)
DG/CL/LS/EM/JA: +9.3 (37 minutes)
DG/DM/CL/LS/EM: -5.3 (20 minutes).
Those are the only 5 man lineups in our top 20. BBREF only lists the top 20 in terms of minutes. And as a repeatedly try to explain to a certain Duke graduate, +/- numbers in small sample sizes (1 game, under 100 minutes) are virtually meaningless due to small sample size and high variables). So, IMHO, I would not put much stock in the 2nd/3rd ones (one of which is a robust +9.3 with Stevens alongside Mobes & Allen).
But the first one is 3 games worth of minutes. I’d like 5, but 5 man lineups are fleeting. So that is decent. -3.4 for a team with a positive diff is not good, way below average for the team. However, -3.4 per 100 possessions is one 3PT shot a game. I would not call that a boatrace.
It was not pretty vs the Nets, for sure.
4 mans with Stevens:
DG/DM/LS/EM: -0.9 (204 minutes)
DG/LS/EM/JA: +2.6 (188 minutes)
DG/DM/LS/JA: -1.7 (160 minutes)
DM/LS/EM/JA: -1.9 (153 minutes)
Again, negative diffs on a team with a significantly positive diff is not good. However, there is one positive, and the negatives are pretty mild (1 bucket over 100 possessions). 100 possessions is more than 1 Cavs game (95.5 pace). He’s keeping us in the game, which for your 11th/12th/13th man starting is fine by me.
3 mans:
DG/LS/EM: -0.3 (288 min)
DM/LS/EM: -1.9 (235 min)
DG/DM/LS: -0.1 (230 min)
DG/LS/JA: +2.3 (216 min)
DM/LS/JA: -1.2 (207 min)
The LS/EM/JA trio is not in our top 20. Same story. LS lineups keeping us in the game, but most are negative. Not boatraced, though.
good thinking. how about getting Larry Bird from the Celtics?
Bog ain’t exactly Bird.
also this Cavs team takes the ‘Cavalanche’ too seriously, it takes too much time/energy to fight back from big deficits all the time and frankly the Cavs aren’t really built for that…yet. They are acting like a superstar team when they’re not. They fell behind way early then got stomped before half and never really recovered. Again that’s coaching and not having right personnel.
Exactly,they look like they think they’ve done something.They haven’t.Where’s the hunger,attitude?
It was good to see them make a run at the end of the Nets game, but it pointed out exactly what you said, having to make a Herculean effort at the end is not gonna do it a lot of the time.
wrote this on Twitter but in a nutshell..the Cavs have an issue at wing the brass is trying to ignore…teams are forcing anyone else but DM to beat them and its mostly working…felt Mobely and Allen didn’t step up enough…Cedi and Caris were solid but not enough…Okoro/Stevens are worthless at this point. I still can’t believe there is no one from the G-league or some random from another team that just needs minutes and can provide more than 8 points in 35 minutes these yokels did last night. Finally, I think JB is really struggling on basic things again and… Read more »
Post-game, Mitchell talked about teams faceguarding him last two games. Looks like the league has figured out if you control him, a win is significantly more probable.
Yep,it leaves it up to Stevens/Okoro,and that ain’t happening.
LET LEVERT COOK!!! https://twitter.com/NBA_University/status/1607449227965386752?s=20&t=8Vj4GiVK9uxQkjl_rGCCVQ
Sexton?
Which tells you that it is a very iso’d metric (sorry, couldn’t resist).
Fedor asks JB about the spacing issues with Isaac and Lamar, good on him!
when it gets painfully obvious, Fedor always comes thru!!!! LFMAOOOOO
Well, nice fight back. Got it down to four. But giving up another 60/50 game is tough. Darius kept us in it. Great game from him. Need more guys that can make 3s or Allen cannot be invisible.
Give me Wade, Rubio, and a wing that can shoot (or a better game from Mitchell), and we can hang.
I am no longer thinking contender, but as we continue to grow as a team, and and we get healthier, and some guys improve, I think we can be.
I am still thinking contender for a few reasons, to run a counter: Mitchell and Garland will continue to grow together as play makers; Wade’s defense on Durant has been a noticeable asset in the recent past; and Rubio had this team running at a high level last year. What I think you allude to with “some guys improve” is Mobley. Everyone and his mother seems to be quoted saying the sky is the limit for him. When he arrives at that peak may well determine when this team peaks. As it stood today, he was not the reason they… Read more »
is Mobs playing as well as last year?
Cavs gave up 19 3’s to Toronto and 18 to Nets in these last two games … 37 to 24 (11 against TOR and 13 against Nets) – + 13×3=36 advantage on 3.. and then they shot 50 and 57% from the field.
Praying Rubio is the shot in the arm this team needs to get to the next level. They’re good, potentially great, but not great yet.
What is current Dean Wade return timing?
scheduled to be back between now and next week.
Love +2 in 13 minutes, we need threes and he runs Tower City’s bum ass out there.
Confused on that as well. JB struggled to decide whether you beat Brooklyn with scoring or defense. Hint: when Durant hits walk-up threes over Mobley, you probably need to match them offensively.
Exactly… JB asleep at the wheel, simple as.
Cedi +14 in a 7 point loss, fire JB if he still gonna run out those bullshit lineups
Cedi closed the game
But agree that it might be time to start Cedi
yeah literally no need to spot the other team 10 points every fucking game.
He is a defensive guy. Cedi is not gonna start. 4 other guys have started instead of him: LeVert, Wade, Okoro, and Stevens. All of whom are better defenders. 5 counting Diakite. He’s played every game save 1. He’s played the 6th most minutes on the team. He closes frequently when playing well. But keep beating that dead horse.
Plus, you look silly wanting to fire the coach.
JB has a career .409 coaching record, no one looks silly being skeptical of him LMFAOOO
and I’ll keep beating the Cedi dead horse when he’s proven to be a far superior player… he’s just as good a defender as those other guys and the stats bear that out.
His mins distro is kinda ok this game sadly. Cavs either executed his plan and the plan sucked…or he sucks at holding players accountable for not executing. The love mins I will give you. Thats garbage in a shootout
It’s really not when Love was clearly good and JA and Mobley sucked ass.
Again…the love mins were ridiculous. I could give you the tower mins except we arent getting anywhere without tower city. Its about prep and execution at this point. If we cant take advantage of having tower city on offense…the love mins wont matter. We arent winning a title with love playing 30 mins a game. We need to take advantage of what we have. JB has not designed crap for that as far as I can tell
I think it’s about JB doing obvious shit, like play the guy (Love) that has experience in these big games and was playing well. No need to complicate it.
I agree Chris. But I dont. But I do. I agree experience could have helped us win this one. But we need an offense that takes advantage of Mobes and Allen. I think I saw two specific instances where allen and mobes got corner threes. Thats not an advantage for us if its mobes. Its a tragedy if it is allen. It didnt look like an accident it looked like a check down option for the driver. Thats…excuse my french…retarded. If we dont have an offense that puts guys in the places they can succeed…we dont have an offense. We… Read more »
yeah Allen and Mobley aren’t doing anything until Wade gets back unfortunately,
I hate that youre right. 5th best sf in the league Dean Wade makes everybody better. I wish we were joking
Wade agenda vindication sadly
Yes!!!
Yes !!!
Why cedi… why. I see why job doesn’t trust you
Cedi starts we win this game
That’s questionable.
He played 30 min. Stevens played 23. LeVert 20. Allen 32. Mitchell 34.
He played starters minutes. We lost anyway.
He was 1-6 from 3 and is shooting 32.8% from deep for the year.
Wasn’t the rap on Cedi in his Cleveland tenure his lack of consistency? Will that change as a starter? I grant he will hit open threes better than Stevens and Okoro…
It’s not questionable, it’s a fact sorry you can’t deal with it.
Did someone just Jorge Masvidal DG in the chin and cuz they blocked it they didnt get called for a foul? Haha what a freaking joke. We deserve to lose…but thats the refs kicking us while we are down
Too big a hole to overcome
“Don’t foul, don’t foul, don’t agghhh Cedi!!!!”
Lol. I have that sweater Isaiah is wearing.
Does Kevin get inserted late in games anymore
Hard no.
Not unless we are going offense/defense, need a 3, or he is just going nuts (Knicks game).
He has not had one of those nights since he broke his hand.
Heading to free throw finish I guess. Better than what we expected 30 min ago
CAVS DEFENSE. LETS GOOOOO
Bout time to hack-a-Clax…
Heh!
Let’s go!
LETS GOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO
Clayton fouled. Come on
Mitchell has been straight bad tonight. Ball hogging has killed them.
He does do it sometimes. He can shoot you out sometimes.
THATS A FOUL REF
You have to make Kyrie drive there.
WHY ISNT LOVE IN THE GAME FOR OFFENSE JB???????? GOD YOURE USELESS!!!!
F#@K KYRIE
Ballgame. Likely,
Nets still paying more attention to Mitchell as they have all night. Smart.
Terrible play out of timeout.
