Podcaps: Wallowing in the Slop
2023-01-18Nate, Chris, and Eli jumped in the booth to commemorate the (roughly) halfway point of the season and to wade into the January trade slop trough. First, though, they had a couple games to recap: a solid, if (according to Nate) underwhelming win over the Pelicans and a disappointing road loss to the Timberwolves. The gents held yet another referendum on JB Bickerstaff and his and the Cavs’ penchant for playing guys while injured. They kvetched about the dog days of the season, the Okoro/Stevens lineups, and the inexplicability of Cedi Osman’s very short leash.
Then the guys got to the pleasant and unpleasant surprises of the first half for the Cavaliers. Nate tried to re-litigate the Donovan Mitchell Trade one more time with an unexpected substitution, drawing a swift rebuke. Then the trade slop wallowing commenced, energized by everyone’s favorite lightning rod, Caris LeVert. The guys broke down the ridiculousness of the Malik Beasley rumors, and then really got muddy talking about the guys that might be available for the Cavs limited trade assets.

There’s an argument that JB is playing Cedi perfectly considering his numbers haven’t changed that much this year other than his league leading plus/minus. He’s playing productive minutes, he doesn’t necessarily continue to be productive with more minutes.
That’s fair but maddening.
that’s an argument totally irrelevant in the context of continuous struggles of Stevens and Okoro minutes.
Okoro is playing better every game. I don’t mind sacrificing peak play in the regular season to develop him and Mobley. I like Cedi, he 100% brings it every moment he’s on the floor. When Wade comes back likely most of this debate becomes moot. Stevens will be moved down the bench and likely not see playoff minutes or limited situational minutes at best. And you know I’m the vice president to your president CLF of the Caris LeVert fan club. I’m not trading Caris for anything but a blue chip

Bottom line is results. Okoro’s a -10 with the starters, Stevens is -2 in extensive minutes. OTOH Cedi’s +28 in limited minutes… now is the time to experiment, not in the postseason.
Last podcast Nate suggested trading DG, now Mobley. Makes for compelling talk. Bat shit crazy talk, but compelling. Haha.

WTF are you talking about Mobley is having a bad year analytically??? That is patently false. Embarrassing point to make. 49th in VORP. 58th in BPM. Nobody younger than him or same age is ahead of him in either category. Only 22/23 years olds ahead of him are Luka, Morant, Halliburton, and Zion. 10th in defensive win shares. 19th in DBPM. Everything you said about Mobley is absolutely dead wrong Nate. Unbelievably bad points.

Mainly Going off EPM, which is apparently one I the few analytics that doesn’t love him. And I do think Mobley floats and his motor isn’t as consistent as it was last year. Also, sometimes I just enjoy Chris (and now you) telling me I’m an idiot.
Fair enough. That stat does show Caris as one of the worst players in the NBA so there may be something to it.
