Podcast 288: CtBGPT
2023-02-23“What are you doing, Dave?” With three weeks since our last podcast and a trade deadline, an All-Star weekend, and a franchise legend’s exodus to discuss, Nate, Eli, and Chris had had a lot to cover. To help us out Tom Pestak came out of cold storage to join us in the podcast booth. The CtB neural net leveraged machine learning to create based hot takes to cover all the Cavs and NBA news of the last few weeks.
First up, an all-star game that left us all pining for more competitive contests of yore. Then we waded into the Kevin Love departure. ChrisBOT, NateGPT, and ELI 3000 sputtered over stats and fury as they ranted and raged over the poor handling of the situation from a teambuilding, reputation, basketball, and historical standpoints. The takes were firy, and the CPUs were heating up until Nate’s head started leaking fluid like an android in a Ridley Scott film. Tom countered by taking on the analytics movement as a whole and what it’s done to the game of basketball, mainly to get keep nate from drifting even further off baseline.
Next up, the CtB server farm picked the winners and losers from the trade deadline, went through the Cavs schedule and what we’ll see coming out of the All-Star break, and fomented another CtB civil war over Caris LeVert. Things got wild as the topics drifted away from basketball and the guys got into tech, construction, video games, Cavs lore, Ayesha Curry, and Olive Garden commercials. Steven Hawking made an appearance, and we all laughed at Skip Bayless.

I hope you caught the bonus section at the end of the pod.
Podcast highlight:”Insufferable human being “ (kyrie) no wait ,we can beat it,,,,,,,”insufferable douchebag”,,ding ding ding!!!!!! Winner!!!!
I eventually unfollowed Delly on twitter due to his incessant crypto posts.
I haven’t taken this step, but yeah, it is unfortunate. Hope he hasn’t lost too much money.
Enough talking— let’s watch some ball! More beers NOMAD!
good idea! I was afraid you were going to throw everyone out of the car if we didn’t shut up!
JA HELPING TO “ EASE THE PAIN “ AND GENERATE SOME POSITIVES VIBES …….. HAS ME THINKING:/ A LITTLE NERVOUS WHY THE MRS NOMAD CONSTANTLY SENDS ME OUT TO GET MILK AND BREAD ……. AND TO HER DISAPPOINTMENT I ALWAYS RETURN…….WITH 🍺 AND CHIPS
https://bleacherreport.com/articles/10066613-cavs-jarrett-allen-jokes-kevin-love-went-out-for-milk-and-cigarettes-before-buyout
I love JA and I love this team. Hahahaha. Immaculate vibes.
That is a pretty good line.
agree with Nate
Koby has arguably been the best GM in the league for the past couple years. Getting JA as an afterthought in the Harden trade, drafting DG with a lot of initial skepticism from folks, Mobley seems like a no-brainer, but Detroit and Houston didn’t think so, scoring Caris for an injured Rubio and then resigning Rubio, recognizing markannen as a baller and finally pulling off the trade of the summer and catapulting the team forward for years to come with the Mitchell trade. So if someone has earned the benefit of the doubt in the Love buyout I think it’s… Read more »
should be obvious to anyone other than the “alternate reality” contingent.
I don’t think anyone is really piling on Koby.
JB didn’t buy out Love, that’s totally Koby’s call. I have to believe Koby did what was ultimately best for the Cavs. He’s been committed to creating a culture in Cleveland, which he’s done and does what he has to do to protect it.
That’s because Love requested it, for getting pulled from the rotation, which was JB’s doing.
you are jumping through multiple hoops to try to save your far fetched theory. You got the usual three people that are in on it, and everyone else is rolling their eyes.
It’s really not as complicated as you’re trying to make it seem. Or maybe it’s complex for you. Keep drinking the Kool Aide Fedor!
I got no issues with Koby. He’s done a solid job. Does this Kev stuff matter in the grand arc of the Cavs next few years? Pobably not much in the aggregate, but there are still conversations to be had about why the Cavs were giving major minutes to a guy like Stevens, why the Cavs were static at the trade deadline then ended up buying out Kev, and most especially why they’ve managed injuries and load over the way they have the last several seasons. Kev is emblematic of those issues and is also the last reminder of the… Read more »
Not even the ones doing the criticising.
Completely agree. “Tell me why I’m wrong” was a phrase I used multiple times last night.
YEP THE MRS NOMAD JUST TOLD ME “ TAKE MY BALLS AND GO BOWLING “ HEY SOME GOOD NEWS WE ACTUALLY HAVE A CAV GAME TONIGHT LETS ALL UNITE AND HAVE ……” HAVE MORE BEER 🍺 PLEASE “ AND CHEER THE CAVS TO A “ W” TONIGHT 👍🤪🍺👍🤪🍺👌
I was lurking waiting for this. Long live the NOMADs!
RIGHT ON NOMAD! GO CAVS.
Yea, this blog has gotten crazy negative vibes this season. Which is sad, b/c it’s not as enjoyable to tune into the blog. Cavs have a chance for the 3 seed and this team is very fun to follow.
Might be time for a CtB team building bowling night :)
great idea !
Keep the faith CMT, in both the Cavs and CtB. I’m all in on the “immaculate vibes” the team’s young core radiates and some of the CtB faithful. You’re totally correct, the stat that says it all is having the fifth best record in the NBA with the second youngest starting five. Enough said.
Preach, brother. Preach.
Are you not familiar with Nate’s work? LMFAOOOOO
I’m not trying to be negative, but there’s a real disconnect between what this team is capable of and what they’ve done. There’s also a big disconnect between people who follow the team day to day and the people who follow the team from afar. The guys who are in the trenches know that Kev has been problematic, but he remains one of the most beloved players and the one guy all the casuals know. He’s the last link to 2016 other than Koby and Gilbert. It is hard to move on, and with people who treasure the Cavs’ history… Read more »
Amen brother, people acting like you shouldn’t be upset about Love leaving aren’t real fans.
being upset is one thing.
blaming everyone else is another.
I am upset about it for sure but also think Love can be a primadonna about it when things aren’t going his way.
That’s all fair.
Well stated.
“Kev has more credibility than anyone else in the Cavs org.” ?
Get a grip.
you first
Historically, sure. He’s one of the ten greatest players in team history, and made one of the three most important plays in game 7 of the greatest professional sports championship in North American history.
yeah, but now is now.
there are some cases of teams blowing off a season so over the hill stars could set records:
Cal Ripkin Jr’s last couple years, hanging in until he set the iron man record.
Pete Rose as player/manager, playing himself all the time when he was batting about .150 until he got the all time hits record.
Simple explanation is his thumb was hurt, he got into his own head, his charges were no longer being called and thus he became unplayable?
Sure, but they haven’t managed his injuries right for years (maybe he is culpable in that. I don’t know).
Some staff have personal favorites or idealogies about how minutes should be distributed, and become hyper-critical when the coach disagrees. Despite the team being successful.
To wit: all the complaining about the rotations in the 2nd half vs Philly. We won the 2nd half by 19 points.
right. and most head coaches make a couple million a year. Since we got three guys here that know so much more than the Cavs staff, they should be in great demand for the next opening.
PREACH BW PREACH
You’d think this was a lottery bound team we’re rooting for given how little benefit of the doubt some people are giving JB and the front office. Also confusing how confidently people are defending Love now when they were constantly yelling “WTF are you doing JB, get Love out of there, he’s killing us” in the live threads.
agreed, even though I do agree with some of it, we need to have some perspective on here and give the org/coaches the benefit of the doubt.
I’ve seen enough from JB. He gets no benefit of doubt. Only doubt from me.
The team is desperate for shooting, so I definitely see why people are upset. But he has been written about over and over again ever since he signed his last contact about what a pain in the ass he’s been behind the scenes, throwing tantrums on and off the court. I predicted last season he’d been gone by trade deadline. Cavs were done with it and I can’t blame them.
Yeah JB gets nothing from me, one of the worst win percentages of any active coach in the NBA…. he’s a Mitchell and Lottery Pick Merchant until proven otherwise.
Koby I’ll agree with you to an extent but he already got my mea culpa for the Mitchell trade.
Fair but A LOT of that if not the majority of it was on rebuilding teams (HOU, early tenure of Cavs) designed to lose on purpose for ping pong balls. Look, his rotations are maddening, the offensive sets leave a bit to be desired, and his out of TO plays are sometimes laughable. But what isn’t is the Cavs have the best god damn defense in the Association starting two undersized guards and two more guys aged 22 and 21. This situation with Love seems fishy but I can guaran damn tee you Love wasn’t innocent in the matter. We… Read more »
I’d say that was more true of his Memphis tenure to an extent, Harden carried them to a playoff berth then he got dumped. As for the best defense in the Association, I’m gonna give credit where it due to the actual players in JA and Mobley (and Okoro frankly, offense notwithstanding). And it’s not like Mitchell or DG prohibits them from having a good defense, if anything most people underestimate their defensive abilities. I don’t give a shit about Love’s antics when the Cavs were ass cuz they were doing bozo shit like let Sexton running reckless on offense… Read more »
I’m gonna step outside CF’s tent for a quick smoke:
Love has been higher maintenance than necessary over his tenure and he’s made a nut ton of money to be a role player the entire time. I think this whole situation was mismanaged but I’m fine with anyone being critical of Love.
LMFAOOOO don’t make me take back the Caris card Tom!!!!
Fair points. Love’s antics are fine when he is still actually ballin. We past that point now. Like I think JB hung in there with him for a looong time and he just wasn’t cutting it. I’m just not giving the benefit of the doubt to a proud player who was frankly unplayable just because of his history of success. Now, I do wish the Cavs gave him another legit shot to get into the rotation post ASB but I ultimately trust what my eyes saw for about 4 straight weeks—get him off the court! For sure to credit the… Read more »
Get him off the floor when he was injured yes. Then heal and get back onto the floor.
I don’t recall anyone at any point during the win streak advocating for getting Love back out there.
The thinking was pretty much: put him on the shelf till his hand is right, which will probably be after the all star break.
I literally wrote #FREELOVE in three separate articles in the month of February, which only had two weeks of games LMFAOOOO
Well he’s free, you got your wish.
I guess Koby took me too literally LMFAOOO
LOL
Amen. The same people also kill Stevens.
It’s all Cedi and Neto. And Diakite (lol).
HOPE YOU ARE WRONG ARCH——- TIME WILL TELL
Nostradumbass is never wrong!
HOW MANY TIMES DID YOU GUYS HAVE TO USE THE AED—DEFIB — TO “ REVIVE NATE —CALM HIM DOWN 🤪🤪🤪🤪🤪🤪. “ MORE BEER 🍺 FOR NATE PLEASE “
MEDIA TODAY “ ECHOING “ THE POST I HAD YESTERDAY THAT A FRIEND S RELATIVES— WHO WORK FOR THE CAVS — INDICATED THERE WERE SOME “ BEHIND THE SCENES “POUTING BY KLOVE // CREATING A STRAINED ATMOSPHERE—- LIKE I SAID YESTERDAY AN UNHAPPY// POUTING KLOVE WOULD NOT BE A POSITIVE TO HAVE AROUND—- WILL SEE IF HE TAKES THE “ LOW ROAD “AND PUBLICLY TRASHES THE CAVS
I doubt it, but will be bummed if he does.
Fedor: https://www.cleveland.com/cavs/2023/02/donovan-mitchell-shocked-by-kevin-loves-buyout-cavs-ready-to-move-forward-without-love.html
Fedor does a great job handling PR for the team.
I’m predicting the Cavs get swept by the Miami Heat in the first round, and Love goes bonkers
———/Nostradumbass
Yup, just like Bill Simmons said(?), Cavs will lose the series in 7 games while being a +70 for the series LMFAOOOOO
Nice pod!
Well, obviously. 😜
Thank you Arch, and thanks for doing the Lord’s work here in these trenches… sick of all these JB bots LMFAOOOO
Go Cavs! beginning the deep dive listen now…
Nate brought Korby back!
Did I?
Not purposefully.
It wasn’t in your words. But I felt the intent.
JB stinks just like disco!
Hey disco doesn’t stink!!!
True but there’s a t-shirt that says otherwise
Stevens tanked Love. Thanks JB! Fire JB!
Chris Francis spitting facts on Kevin Love
Yes bring back Jordan/Bird for a shooting a contest.
Or LeBron v Jordan
I loved Mike Malone’s comments about this being the worst game he’s ever saw re AS game
I saw this AS game was the least viewed since 2000.
I heard that Jesse Pinkman resides in Alaska
