Live Thread: 76ers @ Cavs
2023-03-15Good evening CtB!
The Cavs welcome the Philadelphia 76ers to the shores of Lake Erie for a primetime, nationally televised showcase between two of the elite teams in the Eastern Conference and NBA at large. The Cavs are fighting to stay alive for the third seed in the playoffs while the Sixers will be looking to essentially lock that third seed up. The Cavs will have to play the perfect game in order to pull off the upset, this is their second game of a back to back and they will still be without big man Jarrett Allen. However, it looks like Ricky Rubio has his minutes/rest restriction lifted as he’s available to play tonight. Other than missing bench piece Jalen McDaniels, the Sixers are healthy and very rested.
The Sixers statistically are one of the best teams in the NBA, especially on the offensive end. They have very few weaknesses, but they can be exploited on defense by crashing the boards and pushing the pace. They don’t rebound all that well and they don’t like to run. Unfortunately their offense is so good those opportunities to run will be far and few in between.
Tip off is scheduled for 7:30PM Eastern time and will be broadcasted live on Bally Sports Ohio/Great Lakes and nationally on ESPN, Go Cavs!
LT up
Cavs 5.5 point favorites against the Bullets tonight. No Kuzma and No Allen.
Haven’t looked it up yet, but how are Cavs tracking on the “average eye injury per team per season” metric?
They lead the league
Everything I’ve seen said Kuzma is available tonight.
Maybe it hasn’t been updated on the Athletic yet, but it lists him as out.
On the NBA 4:30pm Injury Report only g league players are listed out.
For Cavs, Allen, Sam and Isaiah.
After seeing how often Donovan was in pain from that finger late in the game, how his shot was off, and also how well Caris is playing lately in a featured role, I’d rather see Donovan sit out a while. They’ve got the Wizards at home, at the post-Durant Nets twice, and the Rockets at home as their next 4; 3-1 in that stretch is doable even with no Allen or Donovan, and maybe Allen would be back sooner. That would be two weeks of rest. Lean on Garland, Levert and Rubio in the backcourt (no back-to-backs in that stretch)… Read more »
Looks like Allen is still out Friday.
slowed the overturned charge down to frame by frame to see if Evan was pulling the string before embiid made contact. Whoever was in charge of that decision should be fined…and the review people if they have influence on the decision should be fined as well. Embiid made contact well before Mobley’s backward trajectory started. Explain the arm extension rule to a person who has never watched basketball and the rule about owning your own space be it vertical or on the floor…you will find 1 in a billion people who says Embiid didn’t commit a charge. This loss still… Read more »
I think the officials didn’t realize this was Embiid’s 6th foul, and didn’t want him to sit out. If that was his 5th foul, I don’t think it gets overturned #riggedformoney#sawitlive
Yep. No way that gets overturned if that’s not his 6th. And eff that. Just Micky Mouse level crap.
If that’s a no call from the beginning, it’s disappointing, but play on. But to overturn that is bush league.
Correct. If you’re looking for a textbook example of an offensive foul, this was it. The refs/NBA had a decision: make the story of the game about a horrendous call or let the players decided the outcome. They chose the former. The NBA is floundering. It’s no wonder casual fans can’t stomach this stuff night in and night out. But by all means, let’s just keep talking about how non-competitive the all-star game was.
The NBA probably has a pretty vested interest in Embiid winning the MVP (rather than a 3rd straight for Jokic), so I’m sure that played into it. It may backfire as now it’s a national story that Embiid is, in Bickerstaff’s words, “a master manipulator of the rules.”
We just played Charlotte twice in a row on the road. Before that, we played Miami twice in a row on the road. We have two games in a row in Brooklyn and then two games in a row in orlando within our last 10 games. I’m gonna let that stay just like I said it, NBA schedule makers. I get saving cash and reducing travel…but could you have possibly worked it out that when we are in new york and florida where there are more than one NBA team that we don’t play the same damn team back to… Read more »
I dunno..I don’t mind it. From a scientific perspective, you wanna eliminate bias – so if you lose the first game (“waaah, it was a back-to-back, we travelled a long way waaaah”), ok chumps, rest up and we’ll go again when you’re ready. Maybe also a playoff preview type of mentality is fostered – a one-off win/loss can be easily dismissed, but when you have two in a row, the team that hasn’t done their homework is going to pay. In the meantime burning less jet / bus fuel (it’s possible the NBA has a green policy, I don’t know)… Read more »

Cavs 3P defense in 27 losses (not counting tonight’s 47%)
14.4 – 32 = 45%
Cavs 3P defense in 44 wins:
9.4 – 29.8 = 31.7%
This is a huge difference..
League:
Cavs 2nd in DFGM made with 11.3.
DFG%
Worst: Spurs at 39.2%
Best: Lakers at 34.1%
Cavs 22nd in the league at 37%.
Seems like Cavs doubled Embiid a ton and when he passed out of that the Sixers were able to make the second pass to the open man.
In general the Cavs have perimeter defenders that are good at getting steals and good at channeling their man to the shot blockers, but not great at actually bothering shooters or preventing them from getting to shooting spots.
Fine effort from the guys. Missing JA and Rubio and DM not himself with the injured finger. Caris played his heart out and hit all kinds of shots to keep them in the game.
Would have liked to see them work the ball and get into Mobley in the paint to try and land that 7th foul on Embiid.

And then..in the Sac/bulls game.. Derozan gets a foul called on a made 3 for a potential 4 pt play to tie the game with 11 seconds left when Barnes barely touched him… Embid pushes Mobley off and it’s marginal contact .. smh..
I wish that horrendous call was within the last 2 minutes.. so it will never get it reviewed for public commentary.
At least Boston lost.
Means Philly have a chance to catch them for 2nd ..don’t like that either.
Oops, Celts won actually, reading the wrong line.
JB gettin fined after this one
I’ve gotta listen now. I’m all about torching the refs!
Definitely, ridiculous too he just explained his view and disagreed with the call.
Rebs in the 4th just killed us too
Not the Cavs best rebounding lineup down the stretch to be sure.
Cavs really fought in this one, had a lot of nice performances really. Going to need DG and the Don to step it up even more against these top teams. They played well but just not their best (2-14 from 3 combined )
Gotta think it’s the finger for Mitchell.
Philly took 10 fewer shots due to turnovers…still won. We allowed 47% from 3. How the heck are we the number 2 d in the league and continually give up 40+% from 3? I mean I guess thats why we arent #1 anymore
To be fair Philly is also the best 3-point shooting team this year
Philly 38.9% and Denver at 38.7%
yeah but we didn’t give up 40% to them…we gave up nearly 50%. did we not have a plan to limit them at all?
Honestly happy that the Cavs didn’t lay an egg, 2nd game of a back to back great effort.
Agreed.
Philly made 7 3’s this quarter and 4 3’s in the 3rd after we went up 70-57..
And we made 3 since then … so 11-3 (24 points) advantage on made 3 pointers.
The IceLlama lineup in the third, and then the Cavs falling asleep on shooters in the fourth.
Gotta win against the Wiz on Friday, to keep that 3-game lead on the Knicks.
DG and DM both 1-7 from 3… everyone else 12-26
Cavs got refballed, but JB’s obsession with Stevens and OKoro cost them the game. Also Caris should’ve been running the offense in the 4th quarter he was unstoppable and hasn’t touched ball since DG and Mitchell got back in the 4th.
It hurts us every single game to count on okoro for 30 mins. People think cedi is better in short mins and are likely right…sorry but okoro is even less impactful
Yeah, Cedi’s high variance so that makes sense. JB not finding a way to get Wade revved back up is a travesty, he’s got to find minutes for him with the starters and just let it cook.
Yeah Wade seems to have plateaued since coming back. Troubling.
Given the inconsistent mins and role I dont blame him
jB playing Diakite was a win tonight. Im starting to think he is loosening up his weird stupid circle of trust and figuring out that he cant play a full season of the same 8 guys. Its too late for that this year but he doesnt 100% discourage me anymore
yeah agreed, Neto too!!!!
JB lost this one in the third.
And the refs sealed the deal.
And here to take you out this evening is the Golden Turd, singing “you.can’t touch this”.
LeVert can’t pump fake there.
How is that not a take foul?
I despise this Philly team!
Literally the most egregious fuckup in offiating I’ve ever seen, and I’ve seen some trrrible shit.
You must have missed that Hornets game last year then
This was worse actually. At least there was chaos to deal with in that one. This was just blatantly reversing a correct call for no reason
Exactly,unquestionable.
I guess but in the Hornets game they literally counted a 3 of a dude taking a practice 3 two seconds after the whistle blew
And he didn’t even make the 3.
I guess.
Loose ball foul uncalled on Tucker.
Make or miss. Great game regardless.
That’ll do it. Hosed by the refs in this affair.
We also let them rebound the ball.. 5 offensive rebounds or more this quarter when we are fighting to crawl back in the game.
Missed Allen. Tucker just too strong for Cedi.
Allen ain’t much stronger than cedi tbh
Looks like the ball slipped on Cedi.
Great shot maxey
Another 3….
And a wide open one too.
Cedi clutch.
Need stops
Maxey the Cavs killa
Doris is coming as close as an announcer can to saying “changing that call was some BS!” Lol!
Lol. Cedi lucky.
Offensive rebounds killing us this quarter too.
Cavs dodging bullets like Neo
Lol
Dear God. What a load of shit.
110-105 now sigh
Didn’t realize this was on ESPN.
They are still talking about it too..
REFS YOU SUCK!!!
Continue to go at Embiid
REBOUND THE BALL DONOVAN START COOKING!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Spida smarrrt
OK MITCHELL START COOKING
Go after him now.
Doris Burke is shocked
rigged. for money. sorry, I saw it live.
LMFAOOOOO GOOD POST
PML
Pin it
Wowwwwwwww
Yep of course it’s overturned
Da fuq?
Doesn’t surprise me..
Pushed with the arm. Simple.
Feel like if it wasn’t his 6th foul – he’d def wouldn’t get it overturned
JB should’ve challenged that possession. Doesn’t. Game skipping away.
It looked like Embiid extended his arm but I really don’t know if the refs will over turn it or not?
It’s against the Cavs and it’s an mvp favorite let’s see…
We need to get some momentum and get some stops to maybe squeak out a win.
Mobes sold it, but don’t see how they overturn that…
Exactly, he flopped a little but that was a whole lot of forearm shove too
MOBLEY GOT HIM!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Doc challenging that 6th foul
Guess what, if you jump onto players all night you will have foul trouble.
LETS GOOOOOOOOOO SPIDA JUICE!
Embiid with another nate foul. I don’t leave my feet that much though.
😂
Spida slam!
Embiid with 5 fouls
GOT DAMMIT
Mitchell somewhat underwhelming
yup, hasn’t gotten going
The game we really needed him
Mobley need to start making his free throws 3-7 tonight.
Tired legs
