Drawings from the Notebook of Chris Grant (episode 17)
2011-09-28As you may or may not know, I have a loose deadline of every Sunday morning for these cartoons. This week, I may or may not have hit it. What happened was John and I were working on our new CBA and couldn’t come to terms until this morning. I now get 100% of Cavs: the Blog’s advertising revenue.
On David Stern and the NBA lockout:
This is getting serious.
Words like “monumental” and “deadline” are being thrown around, and that usually means that there’s some sort of monumental deadline on the horizon.
What’s the deadline for?
From what I gather, it seems the company line from Stern and the owners is now that this weekend’s scheduled meetings will mark the last attempt to start the season on time. Meaning that if we don’t have a deal (or substantial progress) by Monday, a 50 game season probably becomes our best option. There would be “a lot of risk” to not getting something done by the end of the week was Stern’s direct quote (via Brian Mahoney). That and, “there are enormous consequences at play here on the basis of the weekend.” You could call it a bluff, but in truth, it’s likely not. The first games are supposed to start in a month.
If you’re rooting for a season, the worst thing that could happen would be the sides emerging from this weekend without making any headway.
Because at that point the conversation will turn from saving the start of the season, to saving the season at all.

Thanks for reading guys! (As per usual, the above picture was done by the biggest Cavs fan at CFAAP.com and colored by AJS…and the same goes for the one below, which came as a result of my playing around with the first pic and might even have turned out better.)
I think Stern should walk into the meetings this weekend and just slide that across the table. Provided Gilbert Arenas isn’t there, that’s what I think he should do.
And…want one for the Road?
Here’s an interesting Kyrie-tidbit published Saturday from new Cavs beat writer Tom Reed:
Irving has played just 11 games since last October in part due to a right foot injury — which doctors tell him won’t completely heal for another three months.
And, while he feels “150 percent” and is training with no restrictions, the NBA’s top overall pick in June is a player without a game. The league lockout has him parked at Duke, taking four courses this semester and working out twice a day.
Silver lining of the lockout right there. It sounds like Kyrie’s done a good job of letting his foot heal completely by taking a few months off post-draft (at the Cavs request), and I kind of don’t mind that he’s not yet dealing with the pressure to overdue it early on an injury that may be better off with more rest.
If the league’s first game is in January, I’m not sure that anyone benefits more than KI.
You know, re: the draft…nobody knows yet. It’s completely up in the air. What’s worrisome is that there are some scenarios being floated around that wouldn’t necessarily favor the Cavs—one being that the lottery is redone, except with all 30 teams included in it and the odds being weighted by composite record over the last five years (meaning the Cavs would have pretty low odds to win)…while another scenario would prohibit the team that won the #1 overall pick from winning it again (which is what the NHL did). No one’s really said anything on the record about what would… Read more »
Yeah that list is weird in a lot of ways…williams is the only draft pick in the top 200? cause obviously every team in the league would rather have hedo turkoglu than williams or kyrie haha. hey can you fill me in on how next seasons draft would work if we missed this year entirely?
You do need to start getting paid – I’m tired of waiting 3 months for you drawings! Great stuff as always. Especially liked the Gilbert Arenas comment. My mind went there and then I read that – I laughed. Andy is a top 10 defensive player in the NBA. Offensively he’s probably not in the top 100. Ranking a guy overall is kinda strange in my opinion because you wouldn’t want Varejao or Tony Allen on your fantasy team but dang – I’d love to have both guys on any team – lock down defenders. I’d rather have TA than… Read more »
Ah, beat me to it!
Yeah, no respect for Andy in the comments!! #85 is not too bad (and I guess his surrounding company—Caron Butler, Jrue Holiday, etc.—isn’t either). But in my mind, Andy can be (and/or was in the past) a vital contributor to a championship-caliber team, whereas none of those other guys really have been yet. It’s easier to find a Caron Butler than it is to find an Andy. Maybe that’s a little bias there, but I think a healthy Andy is maybe one tier up.
Thanks!
Yeah, I’ve been keeping up with the list too. Andy got added today at #85, which will pretty assuredly be our highest ranking. I actually think he’s getting shortchanged a bit, but maybe missing a season will do that to you. At least in Kyrie and hopefully Tristan, we have two guys who are on the way up such lists.
I’m hoping for some videos from there too! I’ve been watching a lot of Kyrie’s high school stuff—which is pretty awesome—but could definitely use some new material.
Forgot Andy, according to ESPN’s expeerts, he’s the 85th best NBA player. lot’s of tease about his flopping, but not too bad a spot.
Nice work, I like the second pic/captions better! Not a lot of Cavs news, but was wondering if anybody has been paying attention to ESPN’s top 500 NBA player list? Baron and AJ were the highest two Cavs ranked (I think 104 and 105 or so). With most of our guys like Manny, Samardo, Eyenga, etc coming in below 400. :-( Pretty bad. In other news, I saw an article that said TT adn KI are going to play in CP3’s charity game on October 1st. Along with LBJ, Carmello and some other stars. I hope there are a lot… Read more »
