Live Thread: Cavs @ Nets
2023-10-25Good evening CtB and welcome to the start of the 2023-24 NBA season!
The Cavs have traversed to the banks of the East River to take on the Brooklyn Nets to open their 2023-24 NBA season. The hometown team enters the season somewhat under the radar as they embark to become one of elite teams in the Association after a horrible flame-out in last year’s playoffs against the New York Knicks. The clock is ticking for the Cavs to prove their championship mettle given their prized acquisition in Donovan Mitchell. There’s a constant swirl of rumors about the superstar, but from all indications he’s a guy that simply wants to win. It’s incumbent upon the Cavs to prove they are a championship-caliber organization outside the enormous shadow of LeBron James. It’s also incumbent upon Mitchell to prove that he’s still one of the greatest playoff performers in NBA history, something that is now called into question given his horrendous performance against his hometown team. In the offseason, the Cavs decided to sell out to improve the jump shooting abilities of the roster, however there’s still a Kevin Love-sized hole on the boards with no clear successor.
As for the game tonight, it provides an interesting test in that it’s a game the Cavs are expected to win, even without former Brooklyn star Jarrett Allen out with an injury. It also sounds like the Cavs will be missing one of their best rebounders from last season, “James” Dean Wade. The Cavs will have to compensate for those absences with a superstar performance from Evan Mobley. Will we see a third year leap from the prized big? Stay tuned…
Tipoff is scheduled for 7:30PM Eastern time and will be broadcasted live on Bally Sports Ohio, GO CAVS!
Big shot Caris.
JB should challenge.
Podcap up
FWIW: Top 6 in each conference:
East: Celtics, Bucks, Knicks, 76ers, Cavs, Heat.
West: Nuggets, Suns, Kings, Clips, Lakers, Dubs.
Last 2:
East: Pacers, Hawks
West: Pels, Thunder
Play-In Losers:
East: Raptors, Magic
West: Mavs, Grizz (losing Adams hurts)
More thoughts.
12 boards from Strus was fantastic. The shooting will run hot & cold, but we need help on the glass (38-50 last night, -12).
DG was kinda @$$ last night. 5 dimes and 6 TOs. As a team we took great care of the ball (10 TOs). Mitchell had 6 dimes & 0 TOs. Caris, despite an abyssmal shooting night (4-17) had 5 dimes & 0 TOs. Jerome did not have a TO either. Ice & Jones with 2 each.
Wow, Caris was worse than I thought. Hoping Niang and Wade help on the glass too when Allen is back, but not going to sweat getting killed on the boards by a huge team with JA out. We did a lot of nice gang rebounding.
DG has had some tough games against super long teams. Also missed his big smily fro bro.
Go Cavs!
Man
Killin me to Cedi in a Cavs jersey
Good win to start the year. 1. Struss balled. Might be a great signing. With his defense and shooting he will get good rotation minutes. 2. I don’t know what to say anymore, but I don’t think we are developing Mobley the right way nor there is a good amount of focus into developing him. I get that some is due to the guy itself but the team is not giving him the right amount of opportunity to leap. He’s relegated into maybe the 4th option at best to have the ball no matter who he’s with on the floor.… Read more »
KLOVE WITH 13/10 —— CAN LIVE WITH THOSE STATS—- ESPECIALLY THE REBOUNDING
I AGREE WITH ARCH ——REALLY LIKE RUBIO BUT THINK HIS BEST YEARS HAVE PASSED HIM UP——TIME TO “ CUT BAIT “ AND MOVE ON —- UNLESS HE / HIS CONTRACT ARE VIABLE TRADE MATERIAL
That’s pretty much what he is now.
A SOLID ROAD WIN ——-HOPING EVAN MAKES THAT MUCH TALKED ABOUT “3RD YEAR “ LEAP AND WISH JB WOULD GIVE MINUTES TO “ELDER”—-JA//WADE BACK WILL GIVE US MORE DEPTH AND ALLOW FOR DIFFERENT ROTATIONS
I hate carrying only 14 with Rubio out long term again. It takes us to 13. JA & Wade out makes us thin. It won’t last long.
I get why we do it (cap, open spot for trade). But we somtime lament the Cavs lack of developing guys, and only carrying 14 means there is 1 less guy who COULD develop.
They need to figure out a way to cut Rubio. Even if he comes back how useful will he be?
Nah. I’d see if he comes back rejuvenated. I mean, the die is already cast in terms of the salary, which is not too bad. Jerome & Porter Jr. are decent enough to get some PT. DG/Spida/LeVert can all play siLome PG.
Besides, the return is likely negligible. Even a slim chance of a nice comeback seems more likely than getting anything decent in return.
Agree, no point in throwing away something that might prove valuable.
The time to maybe do something is at the trading deadline. The contract has some value for teams trying to put together a big deal.
Haha looks like they’re still doing the JYD😂
When Donovan starts clapping aggressively, he becomes the Terminator. Love seeing him pumped up. The energy from all (minus D. Jones) was great. This group seems to like playing with each other. Felt like there was freedom offensively, and I agree with comments below…our D will really show up even better with Wade and Allen in there. Go Cavs!!!
Oh and Ben Simmons still looks bummy.
His clap was noticeable when he stymied Bridges’ attempted action late. I loved that he was that dialed in.
Just tuned into the Spurs/Mavs game just in time to see Cedi make a 3 pointer!
Cedi’s going to have some fun this year.
Yep. But for gits & shiggles:
Strus: 27/12/2/1/1, 39 min. +13. 9/17, 7/13.
Okoro: 18/6/4/2/1, 32 min, +5. 6/10, 2-4.
——-
Osman: 12/0/2/0/1, 22 min. -11. 5/10, 2/6.
There will be nights where we miss Cedi. Last night wasn’t one of them.
Cavs coulda pulled away early if not forced to play Damian Jones.I think Niang will look a lot better paired with Jarrett Allen.
He was really bad. Nice part with all the depth is that next game Caris will be good Caris, Niang will recover, Strus comes back to earth a bit, but we still gonna be really good
Niang looked like a maxivan.
I think TT may end up beating him out.
Spida did Spida things down the stretch. Go ahead 3. Steal & slam. 7 in the last 7 minutes.
Strus was fantastic making me look stupid for questioning the deal. 27! And even a late rejection!
Okoro was also VERY good. I don’t think there were too many 18 point (or better) games from him last year. I’d guess a handful.
Most important, we got a road win with good clutch play despite getting a dubious whistle or two late.
Thomas had a great whistle early too. Not super sure about Mobley and Garland today but a wins a win
And he made good choices, when to shoot, when to drive and good D.
2 minutes. Not 7.
FWIW, Ice had 1 20 pt game last year. 18 would have been his #2 high scoring game last season.
Strus outstanding, Donovan great and Ice really good. Everyone else just ok, cept Caris
Okoro and Strus really really good, loved the shot diet and leaving Spida with enough juice to close.
Niang and Jones gross
Strus was terrific. Okoro will get more calls at home.
Wooot!!! Yassss Cavs win !!!!
First win for road season opener since October 31, 2000 (against the Nets) .. what a full circle moment.
Great stat–thanks!
Scrappy!
I’ll allow it
Lots to work on still. Spida can play a lot better, and they’ll be much better with Allen and Wade in the lineup, but that’s a sweet win.
Max Strus JYD Award?
MVP MVP MVP
Cavs win!
Wow!
Wow! Cavs kinda steal that one!
Yep after having a 10 pt lead in the third and leaving the Nets come back.
Cavs closed the game on a 9-2 run in the last 1:24 of the game..
That should be a flop
One more stop and don’t foul or leave them get an O board.
And they still gave up a offensive rebound.. lucky it didn’t go in by Cam.
SPIDA MVP
Should be a flopping call on the Nets
Well well well…
SPIDA!!
No bullshit there!
That foul on Mitchell was so weak… how do you call that
Strus for 3 to win it
I don’t think can challenge this, but that call was ass.
Stanky @$$.
Refs bailing out the Nets
Nice steal Spida
Strus the best Cav tonight.
Cam Thomas for junk yard dog award?
Phantom foul call against Okoro – horrible call
Nice feed to DG but can’t drop it.
And DG got a flop call.
JFC these refs.
Mitchell iso is not working.
Mitchell not on tonight. Some good steals and defensive plays but step backs not working and not finding open interior shots.
Our ATO play was Mitchell driving into their best defender and throwing up an off balance fader?
Where the hell is DG?!
Mitchell struggling.
Someone gotta execute on offense.
Too. Many Mitchell iso Jack’s.
Ice been super solid even GOOD this game. Love to see it
If I never have to see another Caris LeVert short range miss it will be too soon. Its so infurating
Lol just amazing the space he creates only to just brick it
What happened to drive and kick or lay it n Caris?
Evan?
I’d assume resting for the stretch run
