Live Thread: Cavs @ Bucks Redux
2024-01-26Cavs got an extended stay on the shores of Lake Michigan, and will play their second straight game against the Bucks. Let’s hope that Donovan Mitchell took today’s All-Star starters snub personally, as Damian Lillard and Tyrese Haliburton were named over him for the East, today. Personally, I hope none of the Cavs make the All-Star game until they start beating good teams on a regular basis. Also, **** the All-Star game. I hope they carry a chip on their shoulder the size of a cinder block, and take it out on every team they play.
Last game the Cavs tried too hard to get Jarrett Allen started in the first quarter instead of attacking Damian Lillard, which should be the plan from the jump against the Bucks. The lights were too bright for JA, who didn’t get out of his own head till the third quarter. The Cavs need to play mean and aggressive tonight, JB needs to get a tech on the very first Damian Lillard bullshit call, and the Cavs HAVE to play with pace and trust their teammates instead of ball hogging. Know the ball will come back to you, Mitch.
For Milwaukee, they’ve hired Dave Joerger away from his consulting position with the Cavs as of today, and Giannis is probable for tonight. For Cleveland, Ty Jerome got ankle surgery and is out indefinitely. Garland and Mobley are still out, but will hopefully be back soon.
I hope the Cavs play with fire and tenacity and lay some lumber on the Bucks and the scoreboard. Taking the Cavs in this one. Beat em up, wine and gold.

Clips 1.5 point favs tonight. Mitchell (groin) is probable. Mobley (knee) questionable. —- according to the Athletic.
That line is giving us a lot of credit. Clippers are vaporizing teams. You can see a path where the bigs kill Plumlee and there’s just enough team defense to guard PG and Kawhi and Harden and just enough shooting to win bench minutes but it’s gonna be a task.
Kawhi, PG, & Harden is probably the best trio in the league when healthy & Harden isn’t crapping himself. He can defer to Kawhi when things get serious.
Zubac (who is out) & Mann round out the starters. Westbrook, Powell, and Plumblee makes a very fine top 8.
If healthy, I’d pick then to win the West.
Rubio immediately puts his hand up to play for Barcelona now he back home in Spain.
Also he’s another month along in recovery and home.

Per Fedor, JB says he is gonna be on a minutes restriction to start, likely low 20 minutes.
I’d use him mostly as JA’s backup to start so we can continue with the same style of play. That should be good for 12-15 minutes.
The extra 5-10 minutes would be the twin tower minutes.
Knowing JB it’ll be a little bit matchup dependent too. But if neutral as to matchup I agree backup 5 is a great place to get the bulk of his minutes. Let him ease in. I’m so stoked to see him with Merrill Niang and another shooter (Strus? Vert? Both???)

Keep CPJ on part time to keep roster spots open in case we get lucky and something falls in our lap at the trading deadline. to do this and keep the minimum actve, put Pete Nance on the varsity for a couple weeks because they need someone and might as well be a Nance. switch CPJ to full time after the TD.

Cavs have played 43 games, with CPJ dressing for most or all. The 50th game is one after the trading deadline (probably NOT a coincidence)

I would guess sooner too. I think they’ll want to give each live reps with the new system so they can have some live stuff to look at during ASB.
You can see from the last two games against the bucks that we could have used them. First game you could have deployed Mobley on Dame after Dame got his man in foul trouble (I assume Mobley on the best perimeter player is going to be a favored deployment of JB).
Second game we really needed a PG to settle down late game execution.

He’s fast and bouncy and had some fun flashes of rim protection, Not sure he’s a good rim runner but he’s a decent passer.
A few possessions with three shooters and CPJ / Vert might be fun.

Buyout market or a landing spot for a guy in a trade to puck up assets might be best we can do. DG, Spida, Strus, Mobes, JA, LeVert, Merrill, Okoro, Wade, Niang + CPJ is a pretty good top 11. TT & Jones for 12th-13th. I liked the Jerome signing, I would not cut him for nothing unless we get something better.

I think, while there are bumps along the way, I like holding him out in games like this because the starters need to learn to play more like he plays when things are tight. DM especially. Mitchell really has to improve his late game playmaking and being the dude who closes games. He was hit or miss recently but you can see him shedding the tunnel vision he had last year in the playoffs. If we actually closed the game better.. he might not have had to be in.. we had a 16 pt lead with 4 min left and then the Bucks went on a 12-2 run in 2:20 min.
