Live Thread: Cavs vs Magic
2024-02-22Good Evening, Cavs Fans! Welcome back to CtB as the Cavs host the Orlando Magic tonight and try to maintain their status as the hottest team in the association. I do have to apologize for the lack of content in the last week. I, personally, have had the never ending cough, and now my daughters have it, and I have a sick dog too. The worst part: I’ve had SO MUCH I’VE WANTED TO WRITE. The NBA All-Star game was a mess, the entire Association is still sleeping on the Cavs, and I even got to watch a Charge game in West Michigan.
For now, we’ll have to watch our favorite team from a position they’ve struggled in the last couple seasons: after a hot first 3/5 of the season, will the Cavs fade going into the playoffs like they have the last two seasons? I say no! Unlike years past, this team needed a week off to fight fatigue and for Mobley and Garland to progress towards post full-injury health. On that front, only Ty Jerome is nursing an injury, while Donovan Mitchell is questionable with an Illness (though he attended shoot-around). As long as Jarrett Allen didn’t spend the week on the couch, the Cavs should be good.
For the Magic, Paolo Banchero is also nursing the Indianapopox, while Markelle Fultz remains out with a knee injury. Focus will be key against a 30-25 Magic squad that wants to stay in the playoff picture, and who match the Cavs’ length pretty consistently. It should be a fun second half of the season! Go Cavs!

Agree motivating. That said, how many teams will try that and won’t have the personnel?
We have 2.5 bigs depending on how you see Wade. Orlando has genuinely top end positional size and length that lets them be physical. Milwaukee and the Clips tried to out physical us and we beat them both.
I noticed they were def very physical, including on the perimeter. Some of those should probably have been called as fouls. But this still highlights that we’re a team that can get pushed around a little. Esp. the bigs.

Also, I haven’t looked up stats on Levert’s shot distribution last season versus this one; but, my impression was that he almost wholly eliminated the short-range pull-ups from his game the second half of last season in favor of drives all the way to the rim, kick-outs or interior passes off of drives, and 3s. He needs to get back to that.
I think CPJ showed enough when he was getting regular minutes in Garland’s absence, that him in the rotation should be an absolute no-brainer when Donovan sits out a game. Even if JB wanted to take the opportunity to see Garland carry a big load for the first time since coming back, really hard to understand just 4 mins for CPJ.

Yeah especially with Vert being awful…I’m not sure that he’s doing much against Orlando’s size but I do think he needs to run the second unit instead of Vert if Vert is not applying rim pressure
Vert gets hot once in a while and blows up a game, which is good. Running the second unit? not so good.
I am modestly disappointed in that I had hoped:
the Cavs could beat an average team without Spida, and
DG would flash glimpses of being a star.

This is the second loss in a row where the team is down around 7 or 8 and JB sends Merrill back to the bench for Lavert. Merrill totally changes this offense when he’s out there, and when you’re down by that much you have to play him. Lavert is solid, but has minimal gravity. JB also refusing to play CPJ today was ridiculous.
Sorry, but he still chokes when it comes to making critical decisions…

Our defense was kinda garbage…but orlando made some freakin difficult shots a lot. Never felt like we would recover.
Frustrating night for sure. Too many dumb plays just throwing it away. Hot nights for Mo Wagner and Anthony.
Seemed like there was an effort early to use Mobley as the point-forward which maybe caused some confusion.
Really missed Donovan, obviously.
