Live Thread: Cavs @ Pelicans
2024-03-13If your Spida sense is tingling, Cavs fans, it’s because Donovan Mitchell is back for the Cavs. After sitting out for about a week after he received a platelet-rich plasma (PRP) injection to treat a bone bruise in his left knee. Evan Mobley, Wade, Strus, and Ty Jerome remain out. Ty’s been out so long that he automatically comes up as a suggestion when I’m typing out injured Cavs players.
For New Orleans, only Dyson Daniels is on the injured list. The 39-25 Pelicans are fifth in the west, west but are 4th in the whole association in net rating. Key to stopping them: getting good shots and closing out the three point line. New Orleans is the number one three point differential team in the association. Also, obviously for Cleveland, rebounding will be a focus. Let’s hope we see a good one, and go Cavs!

Cavs are missing some bulk and toughness (even faje toughness sometimes has its use) and rebounding. Perhaps we get a useful idiot that tips the scales in round one for 5 mins a half

It’s getting very easy to see why Donovan wanted out of Utah 3 years ago.
Gobert is a dumbass, and in no way do I think the game was rigged, but this was a win-win-win situation for me. Cavs got the W. People are clowning on Gobert. But also its drawing attention to how shitty it is that the league is so tied up in gambling.
Though on second thought, I guess the fact that it’s Gobert undermines my last point. But it bears being brought as much as possible how absolutely shitty this is all going to end with the popularity of sports betting and how embedded the leagues are getting with it.

It’s a great look for the league when players start getting busted for betting. Adam Silver will clutch his pearls, talk about the sanctity of the game, ban and fine players all the while making untold sums of money off of it. Their endorsement of it massively boosts its reach and all but guaranteeing that its going to start affecting games.

Yes one thing I’ve enjoyed seeing from Merrill lately even on the off-shooting nights, is how he is adapting to the close-outs or tight coverage. At least once (I forget now which game) he went up to shoot, but bailed out and passed it off while still in mid-air, landed a bit to his left and got the pass back a split second later, then shot cleanly before the defender could react again. One moment I loved – could have sworn that I saw Merrill, after sinking a 3, make a big gesture to himself like “finally!” And then most of his attempts the rest of the game went in too. It was probably the first time in a couple weeks anyone’s given him “any” sort of space to shoot. But it’s tougher to blanket him when Donovan’s anywhere on the court.

Also – seemed like Darius really amped up the pace on everything he did, with or without the ball. The Pelicans announcers kept talking about how the Cavs were making the Pels constantly move and adjust and the Pels couldn’t keep up.
It was such a fun game. Loved the way the offense was humming, and the defense was great. It will be interesting to see if Jones gets minutes over Thompson going forward.
Stunned at how much more playable Jones looked in the past two games after that stinker against Brooklyn. He’s no Jarrett Allen but there should always be “some” use for a player his size with that much quickness and hops, at least in the remaining B2Bs. If he’d hit that top of the key late-clock jumper (his only miss), that would have been a revelation – but, nah, didn’t happen.
He flashes but will disappoint is my guess. Eight teams in eight years is tough although he’s cheaper than a really good third big and he has the athleticism to make a difference on a team where he doesn’t have to do a ton
That many teams? Huh. The specific question is whether he can box out Hard Rock adequately for 10 minutes in a playoff game against NY. We probably don’t know the answer from these last two games, but I’m hoping we have more “possible” solutions for it than we did last playoffs.
He can’t box out or screen or squeeze the ball at all. My dislike for him is rooted in what I see as a lack of functional basketball strength even worse than Evan who compensates other ways
maybe seven of those teams didn’t find the right way to use him. players get stronger, smarter, and become better shooters as they get older, but they lose athleticism, hops, and quickness. Jones looks like he has plenty of AHQ in the tank.
