Live Thread: Cavs vs Hawks
2025-01-30Second night of a back-to-back, folks. Trae Young (probable) and the Hawks come into town against a team that kicked ass last night in South Beach. The Hawks are reeling from the loss of Jalen Johnson for the season due to shoulder surgery earlier this week. They’ll also be without Clint Capell and Bogdan Bogdanovic. The Cavs owew these guys one from earlier in the season and with a rested Darius Garland it would be nice to deal a loss to Trae’s grifting ass.
The Cavs will also have Sam Merrill back, but will be without Ice Okoro and Dean Wade. The Hawks have lost six straight, so I’m sure they’re hungry for a win. I’m sure Donovan and Co. have other plans. Go Cavs!

Mavs should’ve waited till the summer and started a bidding war. They could’ve gotten a lot more than 1 pick.
maybe, but this could also be (a much better handled) situation like Butler, where he has make it clear that he is not going to resign at a lot of places. that would mean that most teams will not offer much for him
No one turns down a $345 M super max. They could’ve gotten multiple picks for him. But if the Mavs somehow win a championship this year (or next) then it was worth it. I don’t see it tho.

I peeked over at Mavs Reddit just now. They’re going absolutely insane. 100 different threads all with 1,000’s of replies. Lot of people saying they are jumping ship. I can’t blame them. I’d probably be done as a fan too.

Seems possible, given that he was off last night and presumably in NY. Cuban definitely not involved as he no longer owns the team.

The Mavs have 2 real centers, Lively and Gafford.
It is pretty simple, really. The Mavs had become REALLY frustrated with Luka’s conditioning, or lack thereof. And did not want to hand a supermax deal to a lard@ss.
How bad must things have gotten for the Mavs to shop him?
Now, LA will always chase stars. And Luka is younger with a higher ceiling than Davis. But Davis is the better 2 way player right now.
They both are flawed. Davis be ause he’d rather bang less and play the 4, rather than the 5. He is injury prone, so it is understandable. But he clogs things up. 38% from 3 when the Lakers won the title, 26% since, IIRC.
Luka has fantastic counting stats, buts dominates the ball to an absurd degree, and is not a supremely efficient scorer. Fantastic passer, however.
I am not stunned the Mavs moved him, but I am kinda stunned they didn’t get more assets (picks, another player or two, etc.).
Both teams will have to make adjustments. Lakers with no size and divvying up the ballhandling. LeBron/Reaves will handle less. The Mavs will give Kyrie the keys but their spacing will be radically diminished,,and PJ less effective as a 3. With AD & Christie, they are D first now.
Neither team was a contender in my view, but the Mavs were closer IF Luka was fit
This is the only reason that makes sense, but it’s still surprising they didn’t get more of a return for him.
one theory is that Luka has been making no effort to get into NBA playing shape, and they don’t think he is about to start.
