2025-02-20Welcome back to the regular season, Cavs fans This endless winter continues tonight, with only our red hot Cavaliers to keep us warm. The Cavs remain without Wade, Okoro, and Jerome, while Thor is inactive tonight. For Brooklyn, Clowey and Cam Thomas are out.
Hopefully we get a glimpse of Tomlin and Javonte Green who is an unexpectedly competent pickup off the buyout market. The Cavs look poised for a run, and let’s hope it starts tonight.

re: Jason’s post about the 5th starter, interesting little statistical tidbit:
Strus, Okoro, and Merrill are +12 in 58 minutes over the past two seasons together… the most successful combination of all permutations of the trio.
this season they’re plus 40 together, but have only played 11 minutes together.
Okoro plus Merrill and Okoro plus Strus are both insanely good… plus 40 and plus 30 per 100 for both combos.
Okoro/Merrill in 118 minutes this season is +41.46…. quite literally unbeatable on both ends.
If you go with Hunter as the starter, your 9 off the bench in the playoffs could be: okoro, strus, merrill, and Wade…. a lot size, shooting, and defense for the 2nd unit… all can switch, and collectively they rebound better esp with Wade plus Mobley/Allen in those lineups.
Wade is the choice, except that he is really injury prone. I would cut his minutes way down, save him for when you need him
That gives you a fun bench bunch with Strus, Hunter, Jerome and sprinkling in Green, Ice and Sam.
Then you close on matchup I think.
Watched much of the Suns/Spurs game. Suns look older than dirt, Spurs running them into the ground.
Fox is ultra fast and smooth, gets to the basket before anyone notices — how did the Spurs get him for bupkis?
Market-wise, point guards aren’t valuable: he’s top ten but closer to ten than one.
Sidebar: this is why I’m comfortable no one makes a big bet on Ty above what we can pay. You don’t need to go 13-20m to get average starter production at PG. (and unclear whether Ty Jerome can give starter production against starting defenses for 70 games)
We’ll see. We had full Bird rights on Caris, but not Jerome. And I view Ty as more of a combo guard, he got some chucker in him. Not a pure point.
As for Fox, his lack of 3PT shooting depresses his value. But he rips you up if you let him get to the hoop. The Suns suck at both point of attack D and have no interior D. The Durant malaise has set in.

Who. do we think the 5th starter should be when we get back to full strength?
Stick with Strus? Hunter? Wade? Or Okoro? Matchup dependent?
Wade. We need Hunter’s scoring off the bench when the lineups start to get mixed. We do not need his scoring with the starters. Wade is the vanilla wolf. Let him hunt!!!
Hunter should play the most bc we don’t really know what we have with him plus the core and more reps are a good thing.
So I guess that means he starts but I think I prefer Wade.
Stats say clearly Strus, and probably is the right choice because he’s got an edge continuity-wise. Only question in my mind is Strus is another guy like Merrill who’s really dependent upon lineups with Okoro to be successful… only other guy Strus has blended well so far with has been Hunter in very limited action. Hunter is probably the actual long term right choice. Love Wade I need to see him be more aggressive offensively because he’s going to have to score in the playoffs, 10% usage is not gonna cut it. I like Strus as the starter. He has good energy from the get-go and counteracts the feeling-out vibe that sometimes happens. Wade’s rebounding is more critical in later sets with only one of Allen and Mobley on the floor.

Man, that hunter contested fast break finish was great. Isaac would only hit that about 50%, wade might not even try to drive, Cari’s was aggressive and a good finisher, most nights, so seeing that be perfectly uneventful was great
