Live Thread: Blazers @ Cavs 2025-03-02 Off By Chris Francis Sorry for the late LT, but Go Cavs! Live Thread: Cavs @ Celtics (or, Game of the Year) Live Thread: Cavs @ Bulls
LT up!
ESPN’s new Net Points metric has 2 Cavs in the top 10 in the league….Mitchell at #10 and Jarrett Allen 6th. Also some neat stuff on what areas of the game contribute to a team’s net point differential. Nearly half of ONC’s is via TO’s.

The biggest wild card to take Ty away is Brooklyn. They could offer a max contract to him easily, but they are a tanking team trying to pretend that they aren’t.
But if they get Cooper Flagg, get another free agent to sign, then I think they’re a threat to take Ty away…. but that’s a lot of ifs that have to go their way.
Detroit has about $25M in cap space, so theoretically could offer a 4-yr, $100 M contract. But I’m not sure Ty wants to play for JB. Still money is money.
yup, Detroit needs shooting too, and he’s perfect to put next to Cade.

totally unsurprising, I spelled it out in a previous post. It’s more a function of zero teams having cap space and wanting to pay him beyond a MLE.
Also would behoove him financially to sign a short term deal then either gain bird rights or just re-enter FA when more teams have cap space.
For reference, 9 NBA teams have enough “practical” cap space to pay Jerome beyond what the Cavs can pay.
Of those 9 teams, only Memphis, Houston, and Detroit offer both good situations AND good money.
Those are the threats to take Ty away.
and this is purely in a vacuum, not considering those teams’ respective FA situations.
What’s the most we could offer Ty?
Early Bird lets us offer 175% of his previous salary OR 105% of the league average salary. Jerome’s current salary is peanuts ($2.5 mil). But I believe the average (mean) salary is around $10.3 mil. I am not sure of the mechanics of when we can make offers this offseason, when the new year begins, when tax & apron determinations are made. But I do know that we we likely be above the 2nd apron next year and thus not able to use the MLE. Or become hard capped at the 2nd apron if we do use it. 1st apron… Read more »
Jason’s spot on, it’s just below NTMLE
GOOD POST — CHARLIE E —- FELT THE SAME—- KY SHOWING MATURITY
nah. he’s a low bottom human. maturity isn’t just letting time pass since your last fuck up it’s making amends.
hope he recovers.
Oh man, my heart goes out to Kyrie Irving after that major knee injury. Sure he has a history of baffling statements and unfortunate team moves, but he’s still our Champion Cav. Tough to see tears rolling down his cheek while he shoots his last free throws for god knows how long off one leg.
:-(
Taken out by Valanciunus again. I don’t think JV did anything malicious but he also took out Kyrie for a significant period of time earlier in his career with a shoulder issue.
Also perfect timing with Dallas raising tix prices.
Caris & Niang continue to play well for ATL. Their #1 pick had 27 in that game. Hunter was never gonna start there, and $24 mil for a backup SF is pretty steep for a team in the play-in zone.
The Hawks got two useful reserves instead of one, and potental cap relief with Vert coning off the books this year. And some 2nd rounders.
The Cavs got a guy who can maybe put us over the top.
excellent win-win trade.
Most importantly the Hawks got the G-Wagon!
Gravy boat !!!!!

MOBES OUT TONIGHT—-REST —-ALL IN ON THAT DECISION 👍
Slacker!
NBA agrees the foul call on Strus was bad:

CONGRATS TO CARIS —— GOOD LUCK TO “ MORE THOR “
LeVert hits a game winner to beat the Grizz.
good for Caris! I will be cheering for him down the road.

nice! great pass also
The Wiz claim Thor off of waivers.
That’s a good spot for him. You can dream about Bilal Thor and Starr being a very Atlanta like front court
BUCKAROO—- I AM “ BILLY WEAVER “👍🤪
STOCKING UP ON PACZKI s FOR FAT TUESDAY 🍩🍩🍩………..” MORE PACZKI s 🍩 PLEASE “ 👍🍩🤪
MAVS WTF ARE YOU THINKING—— HASLEM PART OWNER ??🤪🤪
haha – I was thinking the Mavs made the second dumbest trade of the millennium, but maybe it is a tie.
the Haslem crew keep doubling down, acting like they won the trade, and the Browns are SB contenders. their best bet would be to trade everyone any good for picks, and tank for two years. but that will never happen, because Haslem cannot admit he was wrong.
Amazing… Headline on ESPN: “Mavericks raise ticket costs, cite ‘investments’ in team, fans”
Mavericks doing absolutely everything they can think of to piss off every last remaining fan of their team.
Not that surprising from the ownership group.
“The Curse of Kyrie Irving” takes many forms
Just learned that Evan Mobley has ZERO technicals so far in his career. I mean, of course. Hilarious.
Meanwhile, Draymond has 55 techs in those same 4 years.
He’s the epitome of California cool LMFAOOO
yessir (said to Serena like 10x this year), he’s a shy boi
I HAVE BEEN ON BOTH SIDES COACHING AND OFFICIATING—-BOTH ARE DIFFICULT—- HAVE ALWAYS COACHED…” TO PLAY THROUGH IT “ —-BUT YESTERDAY THE ZEBRAS WERE A TRAVESTY TO THE PROFESSION———- THE STOPPAGE OF PLAY WAS UMBEARABLE —— FANS COME TO GAME s TO SEE NBA ACTION—— NOT A FOUL SHOOTING CONTEST
I agree that the constant stoppages make games almost unwatchable, but overall I don’t feel like its been as much of a problem this season. I don’t watch a lot of games outside of the Cavs, so maybe Cavs games are an anomaly since they don’t get line as frequently. There’s been a number of years where I was ready to stop watching NBA because games were becoming such a slog. Very grateful I follow a team who doesn’t rely on a star that lives at the FT line. How freaking boring.
NOMAD bro.. are you earl weaver or billy martin when you rock the zebras ?
Saw some discussion about this specific official on Reddit R/NBA, it seems she is consistently and exceptionally bad. And one thing she was doing yesterday that i’ve never seen before is constantly blowing the whistle late, like a couple seconds after the contact. This made it seem like every call was questionable even if most were probably fair. Can’t blame Ty for venting.
Lots of times it’s the “wait and see if goes in, and if it doesn’t I’ll a foul.” But it was even worse than that yesterday.
people have been criticizing officials since day 1. it is better to avoid it. for one thing, it is hard to make both sides happy.
I agree. Have always maintained you have to be good enough it doesn’t matter. The Cavs have been good enough it hasn’t mattered. Let the losers cry about it. That said I’m happy to bitch about specific calls in the moment in the game threads, but you won’t hear me blaming a loss on poor officiating.
WILL PAY GEMS FINE —— ZEBRAS WERE HORRIBLE—— TOTALLY TOOK AWAY FROM THE GAME——TY SHOULDNT BE FINED —-ZEBRAS SHOULD 😡😡
Jerome is not wrong, but a fine is incoming:
“I thought the refs were really bad tonight, especially Natalie [Sago], she was really bad,” Jerome said when asked about the number of free throws. “Stuff like that happens. They kind of lose control of the game, and you just got to keep your head. I thought that first half was ridiculous. Third quarter was horrendous. You just got to keep your head and keep playing.”
I have noticed her poor officiating at other times, and I normally do not pay that close attention to ref identities (just how reasonable or bad the officiating is).
Looking back at Feb: 10 – 1, with what looked like a fairly challenging schedule. Go Cavs!
it comes and goes. wasn’t she the one Mathurin went berzerk on?
She is abysmal and shouldn’t even be officiating JV games. NBA heads are wondering why ratings are so bad and keep tweaking the All-Star game. Might be time to have a little bit of accountability for refs that shouldn’t be in the association.
lame. time to retire the “NBA ratings are bad because the thing that personally annoys me happens” take
But bad officiating affects every game negatively. LOL. It has nothing to do with it “personally annoying me.”
Great win on Nick Gilbert’s Bow Tie Night! Fitting!
Beau Ty!!!
Tidbit via Sam Amico: first time since 1997/98 the Cavs have eon consecutive games they have trailed by 18 or more.
They also have three separate ten-game winning streaks (15, 12, and 10-and-counting. Let that sink in…have they done that before?
sixth time ever in the NBA. they might get a fourth!
6th time since the merger.
IDK if this was mentioned in the thread, but the Cavs signed Tomlin to a 2-way deal & waived JT Thor.
We have an open roster spot again.
Good point.
They’ll probably role with 14 the rest of the way.
Some here were high on, or at least intrigued by, Thor. I wish him well.
KA said nice things. I don’t think we soured on Thor so much as liked Tomlin (and Bates/Travers) better.
I think another true C would not hurt.
I’m not sure we are higher on Bates and Travers it’s just they have some unanswered questions still — slightly fewer for Emoni but he’s been hurt so it would be reasonable to give him another off-season.
Thor has played almost 200 NBA games, you know what you have. He will still get one more make-good deal somewhere but he might have to go the Yabusele route.
Signing Tomlin was a no-brainer. It addresses the only remaining hole in the roster.
I watched Thor on Charge Friday. He was bad and didn’t defend. Helped blow a 15 point lead in the fourth. He’s a center who thinks he’s a small forward, and not in the good way.
Missed this one. Glad to see the win. No Spida, DG 4/16, and won anyway.
Big night froms Hunter & Jerome. I have more confidence in Jerome’s O than DG’s. Plus 6 steals for Ty!
Is Allen’s hand still taped up?
Yeah, it looks like Allen still has something on his hand.
@DANK LET ME KNOW WHERE THE AFTER PARTY AT!!!!! LMFAOOOOOOO
BLAZERS— DEPENDING WHO THEY DRAFT / FA SIGNING s —WILL BE COMPETITIVE IN 2–3 YRS
Cavs won the game with defense and clutch 3pt shooting… that’s how you win in the playoffs!
50–10 WOW —- “ MUSIC TO MY EARS “ !!👍🏀💪
Blazers were playing really well tonight, came in 14-5 over their last 19, had the refs on their side, Spida out, post Celtics’ trap game. That right there is a quality dub!
THANK YOU HAWKS/ TB —-WILL WATCH REPLAY—-WAS THERE ANY OPPORTUNITY FOR JAVONTE TO GET SOME RUN TODAY OR NOT ENOUGH REPS TO HAVE KA ‘s CONFIDENCE
Did not go into the bench much tonight. As many thought throughout the course of game, seemed like there were opportunities to get some run from green or rays on. Didn’t happen. Porter barely got a few minutes. Might have been wanting to get hunter time with more of our common lineups idk. It was a very funky game
Sam was brilliant off the bench though.
50-10. Not too shabby.
Tony Bennett’s boys get the game ball tonight
I agree go Cavs
De’Andre

A lotta resilience tonight. Really impressive.
Escaped the ultimate trap game!
So that’s 5 guys on this team capable of taking over a game any given night – Spida, DG, Mobley, Ty, Hunter
that’s your best offensive lineup in the playoffs right there.
With a nod to Sam and Strus who can get insanely hot. They did not win that game without Strus in crunch time.
Yes, Strus when he gets hot can be on that level; comparable to Levert that way. The others more consistently, though everyone will have off nights of course.
Sam had an outstanding third quarter to bring the Cavs back closer the last time it threatened to be out of reach, and Strus was nails in the 4th quarter and OT.
Attaway De’Andre
Just let them get a bucket.
Deandre’s house
Don’t foul the 3 point shooter!
Deandre Hunter came to play!
DEANDRE HUNTER 6 MAN OF THE YEAR
OMG I thought Avdija was going to hit that 3! 😳
JARRETT ALLEN REDEMPTION HOURS
Hunter with 30 points!
26 after halftime!
DARIUS FUCKING GARLAND SIGN HIM BENGALS!!!!
What happened to the rule of verticality?
Went away with Roy Hibbert 🤷♂️
Also if we made our damn FTs this game is over.
Let’s stomp these punks
Good job Kenny. Way to go. You have a 3 point lead with 13 seconds and you tell your guys to commit stupid intentional fouls
Jinxed the OT streak. Dumb call with the intentional fouling.
What did Chauncey gift these refs today? That last call arguably the worst yet.
It’s been happening all game.
This is so stupid
WTF STRUS
That’s not a fucking foul. Give me a break.
My point exactly
Garland missing clutch FTs again 🤮🤦♂️🤦♂️
Don’t understand intentionally fouling someone what this much time on clock. We are not that great with free throws
Yeah. Not a fan of that decision at all
I agree, should just played for a stop with 13 seconds and a 3-pt lead
The “current and former Cavs” (Hunter and Jerome) 15-27 from the field for 48 points
Almost 50 from Ty/Hunter.
Will not be denied
THE STRUS IS LOOSE!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! GREAT CUT AND PASS
Don’t foul the 3 point shooter
Strus!!!!
SOMEBODY GET A DAMN REBOUND
