Open Thread 1.0: Cavs’ Summer League

The Cavs are in Vegas for the rich, cultural tradition that is NBA Summer League, first taking on the SL Pacers at 5:00PM Eastern time and broadcasted live nationally on NBATV. Yours truly has already previewed Tyrese Proctor, the main attraction for the Cavs’ SL squad. So here’s a quick rundown of some of the other rookies on the roster:
KADEN SHEDRICK, TEXAS
Fifth year senior center, and if he sticks it’s because he can play some elite defense. No combine invite, but a top 100 high school recruit.
JAXSON ROBINSON, KENTUCKY
Fifth year shooting guard/small forward… strictly 3 and D player with subpar production at both during college. Was not invited to the combine either, but also a top 100 high school recruit.
NORCHAD OMIER, BAYLOR
Fifth year small ball center/power forward, whose statistical production jumps off the page. This guy could be a diamond in the rough, depending on how good his jumper currently is and whether his athleticism holds up in NBA circles.
DENVER JONES, AUBURN
Four year scoring guard with great scoring production in college, but can he actually defend, pass the ball, and run an NBA team?
CHANEY JOHNSON, AUBURN
Four year JuCo guy (assumption based on bio), 3 and D wing defender, with dubious ability to jump shoot and horrendous turnover rate for a low usage guy. Only hope is that he figured something out this past season at Auburn.
SALIOU NIANG, SENEGAL/ITALY
European 3 and D wing/small ball big prospect. Biggest plus to his game is his rebounding, but raw/underproducing in every other way. Can he put anything together in Vegas? Recent advanced stats suggest a possible breakout in his playmaking on defense and shooting offense… so stay tuned.

Nyquil might prove to be something special. sweet shot for someone who took up basketball late in life.
Tomlin was the 2nd best player in summer league yesterday by DRE, Jaylon Tyson just outside top 10 @ 11.
Indy had 3 players in top 10… probably why Cavs lost, they had one extra elite player.

Tomlin should be rostered by the end of summer if he keeps this up.

Tomlin the real star for me. Aside from the fouls, he did not put a foot wrong. I think he is a good bet to be #14 atm. Let Omier take a 2-way spot.

We’d still need a big big, IMHO, and maybe some additional ball handling insurance. I don’t see either on the SL roster. Though Tyson’s 12 dimes were a good sign. Late game decision making was poor.
We wilted. Rallied. Then wilted again, blowing a 10 pt lead with under 3 minutes. With some really poor stuff from Tyson & Proctor late.
Some nice moments before that. I *want* to believe CPJ, Tyson, Proctor, or Tomlin will level up and be a help to the team, this year but I am not there yet.
We win if CPJ plays, methinks. But his bugaboo is TO rate vs pressure. So who knows?
Hilarious 9 Fouls from Nae’Qwan by the end! Nice game from him and Jaylon. Hopefully Proctor will improve with some more time at the new level. I’ve now seen enough Summer League to know that you shouldn’t read too much into the first game for a new player. He definitely did not look ready to log real minutes off bench for the Cavs. I think Niang will get a long look this year, playing mostly in G league. Even the Indiana Pacers Summer League teams seem to never tire in the fourth quarter. They have also lost three players 25 and under to Achillea injuries in the last two seasons. On a completely unrelated note…

and you might have read that around the league, Achillies injuries have recently spiked from “hardly any” to “bunches” in the last year or so.
Part of it is pace, but part of it is also overtraining, but part of it is the shit they’re putting in their bodies to allow them to overtrain.

I only saw the last third,Omier some nice plays,, ,Napalm ,lotta points lotta fouls,,Niang looked better as the game went on.Proctor made some shots.Tyson apparently had a nice game going then tried to do too much at the end and failed.As always the play is pretty ragged in Summer league but there was some good spots.
Just watched the whole game. Ditto the thoughts on the Pacers summer team not quitting when they should have. Tomlin: A Dude was all over the court, with handle and quickness to spare. He kept balls alive, showed touch around the rim, and definitely has the range to stretch the floor. Tyson: B+ This was an A until the last four minutes. His aggression set the tone for the first half; his second half was decent, but he lost the handle on a few possessions that mattered, and his last shot was a heave that could have had better placement.… Read more »

Eh. I don’t worry about the fouls. These are guys who aren’t going to be playing in roles where they likely need to worry about foul trouble. There were also some BS foul calls in the game.

I’m already sold on Omier… incredible find. Tyson looks completely poised and under control. Tomlin is hitting 3s. Proctor immediate bucket coming in… CPJ step back jack. They look amazing.
I think 5 min into SL is a tad early to be sold on anyone. But of the non-rostered/non 2-way bigs, he is closest to being ready. He can rebound at least.
Of the exhibit 10 guys, I am interested in Jones.
Maybe for you.
Don’t forget Tomlin, Tyson, & CPJ. Hopefully the last two dominate.
