Open Thread: Cavs vs. Warriors Summer League Finale

The Summer League Cavs wrap up their Sin City excursion tonight as they take on the Golden State Warriors in their Summer League Finale (or, “Consolation Game” technically). For the Cavs, it has been an almost a complete, unqualified success to have Nae’Qwan Tomlin, Jaylon Tyson, and rookie Tyrese Proctor all ball out and give the fans something to cheer for. The only blemish of the summer is Craig Porter Jr.’s balky hamstring and Terry Pluto’s little expose on CPJ’s lack of conditioning.
Tip off is scheduled for 7:30PM Eastern time and will be broadcasted live nationally on NBATV, Go Cavs!

I thought we have been a bit short on content lately, so I wrote up a discussion of considerations for the remaining free agents. I put some time into it to get the facts right, and wasn’t so happy to see it vanish.
Sorry to hear that Raoul, would have liked to see your thoughts. Quickie version of mine.
Starters: DG, Spida, Strus, Mobley, Allen
2nd team: Ball, Merrill, Hunter, Wade, Nance
3rd team: Porter, Proctor, Tyson, open, open
2-way: Tomlin (PF), Travers (SF/PF), open
Nance is not a true 5, and like last year, Mobley is the true #2 C. But LNJ did get some legit minutes with ATL at the 5 last year. I still think a legit, burly 5 is the most glaring need on the roster.
Our entire 3rd team are smalls, with Tyson as a SG/SF the biggest.
Our 2-ways are both forwards. And the Charge just traded for Enaruna, so I think he is likely the 3rd 2-way. And also a forward.
So it seems to me, between the 3rd team and two-way guys, we have cover at PG, combo guard, wing, and forward, but not C.
But with DG out and Ball likely not playing back to backs, and with his injury history, I think PG also becomes a need.
If we were filling both spots it woukd be easy, PG & C. With only 1 likely filled, it is tougher.
The PG will likely play more. Unless we have total confidence in Porter AND Proctor. While DG is out, if Ball cannot go, your PG rotation IS Porter/Proctor. Though DG can certainly orchestrate.
I’d lean PG over C. But could go either way.
As for who?
PG: Brogdon, Morris, Westbrook
C: Horford (unlikely), Bryant, Biyombo, TT, Holmes (Panathanaikos).
Horford likely will never come here because he would not play as much with Mobley, Allen, and LNJ all here already.
Westbrook likely won’t come for the same reasons. And I would not play him at closing time. But as a regular season innings eater who always GAF and gives us some edge? Yes.

Generally, not pulling DG quicker, and and using Porter and the bench in general more were the main issues.
But they just choked for the most part. Aside from Mitchell, and even he had critical late TOs and missed FTs.
KJG must have ordered the ultra cheap AI headline generator from TEMU — everything is “painfully obvious” or “crystal clear”, with “status” and “stance” dropped regularly.

i sheepishly admit that i was paying attention to the browns draft.. once we got into the 3rd round and sanders kept sinking, i began to get a tad antsy.. i was pleased when browns traded up to grab him in the 5th (?).. no idea why.. perhaps possessed.. or just a lifelong 216 boy at heart.. glad to see the young man have a nice outing in a prime time moment.. crazier things have happened.. agree grabbing him in the 5th was a no brainer. I think teams kept away in the first and maybe second because to avoid Dion problems. then no one expected him to be available so they had not planned on taking him — and also everyone wondered if there was some big issue they didn’t know about. by the fifth round, you have to take a flyer on him and see if you luck out. one friend is concerned that he didn’t hang with the coaches (or anyone, for that mattere) when off the bench — contrasting him with Joe… Read more »

Depends on what stage of the team’s life cycle are on now… All that matters for the Cavs at this point is winning in the playoffs, so I expect more load management.
Indiana basically didn’t really start playing until after the new year, granted due to injuries.

a 25-26 Cavs version could be to play 13 or 14 a lot for the first couple months to develop players and find out additional combinations that work. then start playing to win the last couple months, getting ready for the playoffs.
yup, it seems a lot of the serious contenders really peak at the right time in the spring. And with Celtics and Pacers probably stealth tanking, our biggest problem might be just the Knicks and maybe Magic. Could potentially coast to a top 3 seed easily.

my goal for this year is keep everyone’s minutes down until it is close to the playoff time.
I think all of the 13 currently signed Cavs should be getting regular PT. we can afford to give the core 4 regular days off — make the deep bench guys get out there, and sink or swim. might lose a couple games that way, we will probably still be in first.

right, one of KJG’s better posts is basically what the CtB crew was saying two years ago. the Bieber trade seem pretty reasonable. Khal Stephen looks pretty solid and is moving through the minors really fast, might be in Cleveland next year. still hoping the Guards don’t trade Kwan. as of this moment, the Guards have two top players (JR, SK). Manzardo and maybe Martinez are pretty good, and they have a couple marginal position players. it is going to be tough to contend next year. best hope is that Clase gets totally exonerated (don’t hold your breath) and traded… Read more »

I thought Hunter underperformed his expectations and contract more than Wade. Hopefully he will take a big step up this year. Otherwise you might want to try to upgrade. There are a couple wild guesses out there involving both Wade and Hunter.
Zero interest in Oladipo. There are much better options out there if the Cavs want another guard: Alec Burks, De’Anthony Melton, Landry Shamet…

Guards have a remote chance of making the playoffs. if they do, they will probably be the weakest team, although they might have the top bullpen.
I think it is a no-brained to sell at the deadline. Certainly Santana, Lane, and Bieber. This might bring a couple long shots and a maybe a decent prospect (for Bieber).
a tougher decision is trading Clase or not. he will probably bring two or three top prospects plus change. I would set a high minimum price and hope it turns into a bidding war.

I think he could. But I am not sold yet. Wade is still awful useful defensively.
Getting rid of Wade doesn’t get us below the apron. The tax bill would be less, it is still gonna be a lot. Plus, I don’t think the return would be much.
I’d keep Wade and let Tomlin continue to play & develop as a 2-way. For now. Keep #15 open for him.
If we sign a ball-handler (Dipo, Brogdon), we could release CPJ and still have 2 open spots. 1 for Tomlin and 1 for a 3rd big.

Maybe. But my guess is there is interest if we want to shed salary (and get not much/nothing back).
Plus, a contender (Houston) is not gonna give up much for Wade.
With the way our post-season injury luck has been, I am not ready jettison a guy who can play decent minutes in the postseason and guard. We have space for Tomoin without getting rid of Wade. And I would not.
