Still working on iTunes but I can’t find a good place to host the podcast that has a nice interface/is easy to use/will let me have an RSS Feed. Hoping SoundCloud will give me one soon.
I’m actually an advocate for less podcasts, and agree there is only so much to talk about right now. Unfortunately none of these will really be relevant until after the draft order is decided, and FAs until after the draft has taken place, but… Some future topics that I think could amount to their own individual podcast or even more than 1 would be: in depth analysis of Cavs needs vs draft targets for each of our picks, 2012 free agency targets, 2013 free agency targets, and how this relates to our salary cap and the NBA requirements. I like… Read more »
Nice work guys. Good listen. It’s funny to see the tide has changed concerning Iguodala. I remember there were rumors last season that the Cavs were trying to make a move for him and the backlash on this blog was sharp. Wondering why everyone felt differently at the time? I can’t recall if there were other circumstances involved. I was in favor of getting Iggy’ he’s a beast!
John, Thanks for the feedback. We did basically frame the agenda ahead of the podcast and speaking for myself, I did some research on both the Cavs team and players and all the draftable players we discussed. I think that written articles are better served towards “data analysis”. I had some data in front of me, but tried to address this conversationally. I assumed no one wants to hear me talk about DeShaun Thomas’ offensive rating. I think most of talk radio and even talk TV, is built around “topic jumping” and “statements of opinion”. Glad to know that people… Read more »
John – I am curious to know what you consider topics that “hit hard”. As I see it, this Cavs team’s future is pretty clear – they’re bad, they’ll keep falling and land somewhere between 1 and 8, they’ll try to resign Jamison for 5 mil and Gee for 4, and then draft. Beyond that, there is little to no indication of what their future holds. Unfortunately, there just isn’t a heck of a lot of hard hitting, debatable topics that haven’t been beaten to death. Once the season ends (which, by the way, is when our next podcast will… Read more »
Kevin –
Just read your second post about the Thunder tanking. The article perfectly describes my anxieties surrounding this summer. We keep talking about all the different guys we could draft, how they would fit, etc. but generally what goes through my mind when discussing them is (one in maybe four, three at best of each of these guys is going to be good. The rest will be serviceable of below). That’s terrifying. We’re putting all our franchise hope in the hands of a 25-33% chance.
And how did that work out for Memphis lol? Think they wished they had Love instead of Mayo now? It’s a risk not wirth taking…Beal is no gurantee to be better than Barnes, or Cody Zeller for that matter. They need to draft the best player available wherever they are…just not PJ3!!! I am on the anyonebutperryjones bandwagon at this point since I saw it in Mock 2.0. It’s looking like a top 5 pick is likely anyways, so once the order is set we can really start to think about options.
Alex –
Interesting scenario. I forgot that Memphis moved up for this pick. My only fear in trading away Gee is that he’s one of the few talented guys we’ve got. Reducing our number from 5 to 4 known entities isn’t really moving in the right direction. With a draft that goes 10-12 deep like this one, we should be able to grab someone decent.
Anyway, it’s probably all moot. After last night, I don’t expect us to stay this high for much longer.
2nd try at the eaten post: basically it said in 07 Golden State got the 8th pick for J Rich and the 36th pick. Extrapolating it to our situation, that would be comparable to moving up to #10-12 to pick TZeller/Lamb/Sullinger in exchange for Andy and maybe a 2nd rounder.
I think that would be something the front office should seriously consider if there’s someone left on the board they like.
I think the monster ate my last post, but continuing off it, moving up from our #7 slot to maybe #5 would be another possibility.
In 08, another relatively strong draft, there was a trade similar to our current situation involving Memphis and Minnesota.
Memphis received:
#3 pick (OJ Mayo)
Marko Jaric and other filler
Minnesota received:
#5 pick (Kevin Love)
Mike Miller
filler
Using that trade as a guideline, we could potentially move up from #7 (Barnes?) to #4/5 (Beal?) while trading away Gee. Anyone for or against a scenario like this?
Good management trumps good picks. Good management with good picks is downright unfair. Hopefully we’ll have both. As far as moving way up to the top 10, there isn’t much precedent for it. One of the few cases that is in the ballpark of our situation is in 2007, one of the strongest drafts since 03. Golden State received the 8th pick for Jason Richardson (27 yrs old) and the 36th pick. Would anyone be for or against trading Andy and a 2nd rounder to the Bucks/Blazers/Hornets to select Zeller/Lamb/Sullinger? It would certainly be worth considering if there’s a player… Read more »
First podcast was good. These last two have been pretty subpar. I feel like they could be better set up if they focused on 1 or 2 topics that are hit hard and there is some data analysis or podcasters have done research and know questions ahead of time, etc. Seems right now like its just a lot of topic jumping and most of the content into each topic is limited to a few statements of opinion, and then its on to the next scheduled question. I’m sure it’s not easy to hammer that many topics on the Cavs, but… Read more »
just for debate (i am not totally sold on this): if grant really wants beal or MKG why not have Gilbert co-sign on an offer that the #2 or #3 team cant refuse. we know that the NBA is a superstar league so why not go all in and get the best fit and sign via free-agency and test via D-league? my reservation is that i am not sold on MKG or Beal as being a cant miss like davis. another concern is that what ugly contract would it cost to get it. i bet it might be ultra high… Read more »

Wanted to post these here, as the Cavs begin their abysmal descent to the bottom over April. Hopefully Chris Grant makes all the right decisions with this summers picks, regardless of position.
There are a couple of articles on ESPN’s true hoop network that go into detail about what my “Building a Winner” series was trying to show a couple of months ago, i.e. tanking isn’t a guarantor of success and the OKC model is barely a model. Making the right decision, time after time, is what drives the top NBA teams.
