Recap: Wine 47, Gold 57 (or, three periods and no zamboni)
2015-10-05Cleveland Cavaliers basketball is back… sort of. The Cavaliers played their first basketball in front of fans since Game Six of the NBA Finals with Monday’s Wine & Gold Scrimmage at Quicken Loans Arena. While the scrimmage lacked the intensity of a real NBA game, it was a fun event that gave deprived Cavalier fans a chance to see the team they have missed these last four months. (And if you didn’t catch it, you can watch the full scrimmage here).
The fans at the Q were excited to see their team and showed it with huge ovations for LeBron James, Mo Williams, Kyrie Irving, and many others as they were shown on the Jumbotron before tipoff. The players began the activities with a series of drills, and the fans cheered for every made basket, particularly a few impressive dunks by James, who was conspicuously attired in a No. 6 jersey.
At first glance, the Wine Team seemed like a heavy favorite. The starting lineup of Mo Williams, J.R. Smith, LeBron James, James Jones, and Timofey Mozgov, will likely be the starting lineup when the season opens on October 27th, with the exception of Kevin Love starting ahead of Jones if healthy. On the other hand, the Gold Team had a starting lineup of Jared Cunningham, Joe Harris, Austin Daye, Sasha Kaun, and Anderson Varejao. The contrast was noticeable, as Daye and Cunningham may not even make the team, Harris is unlikely to be part of the rotation, and one of Kaun or Varejao may also not see much time whenever Tristan Thompson finally signs. While injuries and holdouts might have caused the lopsided lineups, it should be noted that Richard Jefferson and Matthew Dellavedova also came off the bench for the Wine Team.
The game itself was broken into three segments. The first two were ten minutes each, and the last one was five minutes. Austin Daye gave the Gold the first lead of the night with a quick bucket, only to watch the Wine quickly take the lead behind a James Jones three. From there, the lead went back and forth as players pushed the pace, but rarely took great shots. It was encouraging to see Anderson Varejao running around with his usual energy, even though he wasn’t particularly effective. The highlights of the first segment were old man James Jones stuffing Nick Minnerath, a steal and dunk by LeBron James, and the ovation the crowd gave Kevin Love during the first timeout. The first segment ended with the Gold leading 17-16.
That was the end of the night for LeBron James, as he started the second segment on the bench, never to return. J.R. Smith also started the second segment on the bench, but returned to the game after a few minutes. It was interesting to watch the contrast between Williams and Dellavedova as they took turns running the point for the Wine Team. Dellavedova brings some solid skills to the table, but Williams is simply better running a team and getting it into its offense, and especially at getting his own offense.
It was at this point that the camp invitees—who obviously had more incentive to play hard in their fight to make the roster—began to make their marks on the game. D.J. Stephens and Jared Cunningham had some incredibly athletic finishes at the basket, Austin Daye hit a three, and Quinn Cook began to take over while running the point for the Gold. At the end of the second segment, the Gold led 45-39.

The third “quarter” featured the kind of back-and-forth chucking that would do any All-Star Game proud. Cook continued to do a nice job at point guard for the Gold, and finished with 13 points, three rebounds, and four assists. Cunningham continually attacked the basket to finish with nine points, and the Gold pulled off the upset with a final score of 57-47 over the Wine.
A couple of quick notes:
- While none of the starters were especially impressive, they seemed to be playing with much less focus than those who are fighting for minutes or to simply make the team. This was totally natural whether or not it was particularly entertaining.
- While it’s unlikely that any of the training camp invitees have any real impact on the team, the perimeter invitees Daye, Cunningham, Cook, and Stephens were all much more impressive than the big men. Minnerath and Chris Johnson did little of note, and power forward Michael Dunigan didn’t play at all.
- For all of Cunningham’s athleticism and ability to attack the basket, he still lacks an outside shot. It’s hard to see David Blatt wanting to use the last roster spot on Cunningham, considering how much the Cavaliers’ coach loves shooters who can space the floor.
- Sasha Kaun played well on his way to eight points and six rebounds. Hopefully, he can give the Cavaliers more than Kendrick Perkins and Brendan Haywood did.
It was good to see the Cavaliers back in actions after what seemed like an eternity. The best thing about it may be knowing that things will only continue to ramp up from here.
THE KEY / AND WORRY IS STAYING HEALTHY AND INJURY FREE ESPECIALLY IN ANDY’S CASE BUT YES I TOTALLY AGREE WITH WHAT YOU ARE SAYING
So, if Kaun backs up Mozgov, what’s the drop off of having Andy backing up Love instead of Tristan?
It could be that some of the disappointment and anger directed towards Tristan can change to indifference once the season starts and the Cavs are winning.
What a difference a year makes. Last year we were much more limited in the front court. Kaun was a great cheap pick up.
Thats a great point. If Andy can come back to full strength (big if) he could provide 75% of TT. Andy is 90% of the rebounder. Better on offense. Substanially worse defender but makes up for some of that with instictive plays
Not convinced he’s a substantially worse defender. TT had a good post-season, but he wasn’t lights out by any means.
Unless you listen to Windy’s praise of TT’s post-season on the most recent Lowe post… you might actually believe he’s worth $94M…
That was absurd, but typical Windhorst. You’d think teams were lining up to give him the max.
Let’s not go overboard with our expectations of Andy. He’s never been a good rim defender and taking all of those charges increases his risk of future injury.
Most importantly, almost no one recovers from an achilles tear to preform at 100% of their athletic peak. Andy’s offensive game will age well, but I’m really concerned he’s going to be a trainwreck on defense.
We don’t need Andy to be a rim protector anymore. In the past, yes. Now we have Moz and Kaun, our own pair of Spetsnaz body guards. Andy will then ALSO be behind Kevin Love. I really think Kaun will be able to soak up a lot of relief for the 5. Remember we can still go small, tho less effectively, without TT. Not to mention we have the BHTE.
Edit* Kaun can soak up a lot of relief for the 5 AND the 4 spot.
@FearTheSword: Ohio governor John Kasich says the Cavs should sign Allen Iverson. http://t.co/G4qTXvxkzA http://t.co/XjYPjKmZqM
And Kasich is probably the least stupid of the Republican candidates. What a crew.
LOL. And Ray Allen while they’re at it, might as well. And get Starbury as backup PG.
He was set up by the reporter. Why would Kasich be kept up on the latest cavs rumors
I want a governor that’s more concerned with being governor than watching basketball. Of course, I want one that is more concerned with being governor than running for president, but that’s a different story.
On a funny note Harden says he the best player in the NBA. Glad he is not on the Cavs.
Why? It’s not really that funny. The guy was a close second for MVP last year. I’m sure every top 10 player thinks he’s the best. The guy is probably top 5. Lebron, Davis, Durant (if healthy). Next tier Steph, Harden, CP3.
I thought he was the MVP last year. No player meant more to his team. Take Steph off the Wizards or LeBron off the Cavs (after the trade), and the teams are still good, if healthy. Take Harden off the Rockets, and I’m not sure they’re .500.
He was certainly the MVP of throwing himself into defenders for cheap fouls…
So true. I wish they would change that stupid rule. Who needs that nonsense?
They wouldn’t even need to change a rule – just call the current rule properly. It’s an offensive foul, just call it.
From the blog section on the Cleveland.com article: “mrbake1 How was this guy not drafted? Co-captain, shared team MVP honors, won NCAA championship starting 39 games for Duke. Quinn Cook could be a very good pick up. Concluded career No. 28 on Duke’s all-time scorers list with 1,571 points One of just seven players in Duke history to record 1,000 points and 500 assists Set a Duke record with a career assist-to-turnover ratio of 2.52:1 Ranks fourth all-time at Duke in career free throw percentage (.853) Played in 143 games during his career, tied for the seventh most in Duke… Read more »
EVIL THANKS FOR SHARING THE STORY ON QUINN COOK / AM ROOTING FOR HIM ALSO—-TIME TO DUST OFF THE SONG ” THE MIGHTY QUINN “
Wow! PG-13 dropped 30 in just 23 minutes tonight against the Pistons…
I would imagine he is out to remind everyone he is not done. The Pacers and Heat series were some of the best, glad he is back.
Great story… rooting for the kid…

Nice find, EG! and I agree with NOMAD, where’s the song EG???
The version I am listening to is sweet Jerry Garcia version but cant upload it, sorry
Thank you Genius……Jump for Joy!
Good memories there! Bruce Hornsby joining on the grand piano,
I can’t stand how cocky the Warriors are, especially Curry. I understand that he will probably be the greatest shooter ever, but he walks around like he’s already won 5 rings. I hope the Thunder and Spurs wreck them. And if they don’t, I know the Cavs will.
Hey Steph… don’t you actually have to have biceps to do this pose?
I agree, the swagger and body language has not been earned yet in my book. Looking forward to humility lessons.
Gotta disagree. You win an MVP and a championship, you can be the cock of the walk till someone knocks you off. Guy was arguably the best player in the league last year. Hope he gets knocked down too, but he’s earned it so far.
(Who the hell says “cock of the walk” anymore? Man. I’m old.)
Nope… I’m gonna disrespect Stephanie and his weak arms all I want! ;)
ACCORDING TO WIND (BAG ) HORST T.T.’S ” LAYOFF ” WILL LAST MONTHS WHICH MEANS POSSIBLY 2 OF THE CAMP INVITEES MAKING THE TEAM —” NOMAD’S ODDS ” SAY DAYE AND COOK
Wind-bag doesn’t know a THING. I don’t trust him anymore. While I don’t doubt that it is a possible scenario, I just don’t trust it coming from him.
62 wins. Delly wins MVP. Blatt COY. Kaun wins Finals MVP. LeBron averages 16/10/11.
Yuck, But if we win the title I wouldn’t complain at all.
Cook hit a step back to his left, so that could keep people honest that shade him right. Oladipo couldn’t go left, and developed on or two counters to remedy that shortcoming. Cook is quick, not fast. He can break down defenses by maneuvering in the paint inside the foul line – but may be limited getting to the basket (by height as much as anything). He is “athletic enough,” but not super athletic, but is super instinctive – which trumps super athletic if you are “athletic enough.” That’s how a super instinctive Cook would trump a super athletic DJ… Read more »
If TT doesn’t sign for a while and they are willing to release Harris, it would be interesting to sign Cook, Stephens, and Daye. I’m the most doubtful about Daye because he wasn’t able to make it work with the Spurs even with his skill and physical gifts. Word has it that it was mostly due to lack of character and mental fortitude.
I don’t know as much about Stephens but feel more willing to give him the benefit of the doubt. Cook spent four years with Coach K, character should not be a problem.
Daye has shown enough to understand why the Spurs and others have given him a shot. However, it’s probably going to boil down to Jefferson and Daye. Jefferson, an experienced veteran, has come into camp in great shape and is unlikely to be unseated by Daye. Daye either has to make a great showing this time around or an established player will have to not cut it.
Danny Green was also cut by the Spurs at one time.
Shump “coming back for blood”…
http://espn.go.com/blog/cleveland-cavaliers/post/_/id/1178/shumpert-i-will-recover-and-i-will-be-back-for-blood
Love it I think they all want to show the world what they are capable of on all cylinders. This is why it is so hard to swallow the TT crap, sorry I brought that up.
Now that is great news. 67 wins might be the floor for this team if Love and Irving come back soon enough.
67 wins the ‘floor’? Funny stuff.
Cavs won’t win 67. They’re going to rest guys more this season. I’d put them high 50s/low 60s, which doesn’t really matter because they aren’t going for most wins in the regular season. They’re going for most wins in the playoffs.
And anyway, high 50s/low 60s should be good enough for best record in the EC… I don’t see another fluky team like the Hawks of last year…
Wow, insanity. Why would they push to win 67+? They got banged up guys they need to ease in. Lebron/Love/KI shouldn’t be burning out for regular season stats. Blatt needs to time this perfectly so that they are entering full strength at the start of the playoffs. I expect some losses as they figure that out.
The injured guys will ease back in, but I’d bet on LBJ going hard to try and win one last MVP. It really seemed to annoy him that he wasn’t really in the conversation last year due to the sabbatical. And even he’s got to see that barring injury, The Brow has the talent to be MVP for the foreseeable future…
From the McMenamin article…
“He’s been good in camp since day one,” Cavs coach David Blatt said of Cook. “I thought Jared [Cunningham] did a real good job, too. A few of our non-contract guys really did a nice job tonight.”
Cook, Cunningham, Harris, Daye. What do these guys have in common???!?!?!?!
NONE ARE GOING TO PLAY MEANINGFUL MINUTES WITH THE CAVS.
Didn’t you say that about Delly last year? I believe the phrase was “Mike Miller will take all of Delly’s minutes.”
Delly sucked for almost the entire year and was buried on the bench in the Celtics series. He played because JR got suspended and Kyrie got injured and Miller got old. He had 2 nice post-season games. You are going way overboard on the Delly love. It’d be nice if you could be a bit less biased about him.
Nate’s not alone. McMenamin agrees…
“Matthew Dellavedova’s summer playing for the Australian national team clearly showed in his play on Monday. His game looked in tune and his confidence was at the level it was during the Cavs’ playoff run. He finished with seven points on 3-for-6 shooting with four rebounds, four assists and a steal. But the moment of his that gave me the most satisfaction was seeing him practice his floater during layup lines while some of his other teammates were turning it into a dunk display. Always working, that Delly.”
IT would be nice, but not nearly as much fun.
And your examples point out exactly why you need to develop guys who are not “GOING TO PLAY MEANINGFUL MINUTES” – because you never know when you’ll need them. Also, Delly had more good post-season games than any other second year player in last year’s playoffs.
Delly shot like 20% in the playoffs. It was not pretty.
28%, actually. But he also had 7 double digit games. The only second year player who looked better in the playoffs was Giannis.
28%
Haha. Good luck with defending that. 28% for a guy who can’t create and is relying on others to set him up with good shots is just awful.
Good thing we signed Mo.
Second year player in his first playoffs.
Sounds like a great article, just how valuable Delly was to the cavs. I know Lebron would defend his importance. Big fans of all the cavs not just a few….
To be fair, Mike Miller did take all of Delly’s bench minutes.
Doesn’t mean they can’t find a diamond in the rough and develop the end of their bench. C’mon Cols, don’t be such a curmudgeon…
This is a blog of basketball, and specifically, Cavaliers’ Basketball enthusiasts. Debating over end of the bench roster decisions by the front office is enjoyable for us. Why are you being a wet blanket?
Good inaugural recap, Mike! Must have been great to be there in person. I didn’t expect much from the starters in this scrimmage. Once LBJ got his deep three and his “in the weeds” defensive play with complementary run out dunk, you could tell he scaled things back from there. Mo looked really comfortable running the offense and his shot looked smooth. He had a couple of passes that would have been easy scores in the regular season too. Loved seeing elder statesman JFJ competing on both ends, hitting threes and blocking shots. Moz did look rusty, but he did… Read more »
Cunningham looked ok to me, but kind of out of control on offense, and undersized. He also can’t shoot. Did he look especially good on defense?
I thought he looked good on D and also appreciated his energy level. He was in the right place at the right time a few times last night. Agree, he’s not a shooter, so he probably won’t make the team, but I liked his energy…
“Sasha Kaun played well on his way to eight points and six rebounds. Hopefully he can give the Cavaliers more than Kendrick Perkins and Brendan Haywood did.”
… Three more points, and he’s giving us more than Tristan did. *snicker*
3 more rebounds rather
Scrimmage notes: Have to disagree with Mike about Delly versus Mo on the point guard duties. Delly does a fine job of getting the team into its offense. He had 7-4-4 or so in about 18 minutes. Solid numbers. He looks cut, too. Mo is better at getting his own shot, and he can fill up the hoop. Still say Mo’s best role is offense off the bench. Quinn Cook looked good with 13 points, but it was a scrimmage. I want to know how he plays when he get’s shaded to the left. Everything was going to the right… Read more »
I’ve liked Kaun for awhile. It’s good to see that he’s proving his value earlier on in the preseason. He needs to loan Moz his Russian gloves when he steps off the court.
I noticed that Delly looked like he slimmed down. I think this is a good thing. Hopefully that doesn’t mean he lost that strength that helped him D up on post players and bully other guards. LOVE Kaun so far. If I were TT, I’d start paying attention to that. I think we will be just fine with Kaun filling TT’s role. Remember, we saw so many good things out of Kaun but we always hear about how good his defense is. We didn’t even get to see that last night. Beware TT. On a side note, I don’t think… Read more »
AS NOTED IN THE PREVIOUS BLOG—DAYE HAS ALOT OF SHAWN LIVINGSTON IN HIS GAME —-AND REPORTS ARE HE IS HAVING A GREAT CAMP SO FAR —BELIEVE IT IS DOWN TO DAYE AND COOK —DAYE DOES HAVE PREVIOS NBA EXPERIENCE
Really expansive article for the scrimmage. Nice point on LBJ wearing 6 as a subtle message for TT.
At risk of sounding like a dumb-dumb, how is this a message for TT?
Think about it? Where did he wear #6?
I still don’t get it. Are you saying because Lebron wore number 6 in Miami, that Tristan is going to Miami or Lebron is going back there if Tristan doesn’t get paid 18-19$ million which is more than Kyrie gets paid and almost as much as Kevin Love?
As Alex said, at the risk of sounding like a dumb-dumb but I don’t see how the 2 relate and why its subtle?
It’s saying hey FO I can leave Cleveland and go elsewhere if you don’t adhere to my demands.
If the Cavs refuse to put a good team around LeBron he should leave (thanks Danny Ferry!!!!). But the Cavs have put a good team around him. He’s not leaving.
I’m not saying he is leaving. It’s just a negotiation tactic. That is all.
Agree with Alex. If it was really a message about TT, Bron would have rocked a #13 jersey…
The “subtle” message to the FO – get the deal done with TT or I will go back to Miami, even though I’m not really going back to Miami… I’m just playing on your paranoia… That is something LeBron would do IMO.
Nope. LeBron is a Cav, The best Cavs. He carried an entire team to game 6 of the Finals. Quit it.
Quit what exactly? Quit giving my opinion? No!
This is completely my fault. I made the edit about No. 6, and had heard it was an homage to TT and wrote it without verifying. Now I can’t find that original tweet. Don’t blame Mike on this one, it was all me. I’ve corrected. The Lesson: don’t repeat everything you read on the twitters.
My thoughts: 1. Quinn Cook baby! He can shoot. He has poise. His handling is better than I thought. I think Delly defending him has made him better. The problem is that he lacks quickness to consistently get to the hoop, as well as lateral quickness to defend faster guards. His shooting will give him a chance to make the team. 2. Sasha Kaun looks good! He’s much quicker than I expected. He’s fundamentally sound. I can’t wait to see him in game action. 3. Mo Williams: he looks ready to go. He’s looking very smooth. His shot is looking… Read more »
Front office did a great job of finding guys to fill training camp spots. Most of the players were young, athletic, and brought an intriguing skill set. It will be an interesting to see who gets the final spot and the thought processes behind the decision. Cook looks like the favored player so far, but the point guard position is where the Cavs are deepest. We’ll see if that’s a factor in the decision. As much as I wish Joe Harris all the best, I wonder if it’s possible to release him and add Stephens along with Cook (or whoever… Read more »
I agree… Cook stood out. I think he’s going to make the team. With Kyrie and Shump out, they’re actually lacking depth at the guard spots.
As bad as Harris may have looked, no way I release him for Stephens. Stephens had some nice highlights, but I just don’t trust his shot or handling at all. He will have to stand out on defense to make it.
If I were Harris, I’d worry about Daye, who can make some 3s and has NBA experience.
