Live Thread: Cavs vs. Hawks (Pre-Season)
2015-10-07In the new TNT spot that dropped today, the network went heavy on the metaphors as they depicted LeBron James, Kyrie Irving and Kevin Love (with an assist from comedian Mike Epps and a camel) wandering through the desert on an epic quest to end the championship drought in the ‘Land. Tonight, that quest begins (somewhat) in earnest as the Cavs kick off the pre-season with a “home” game in Cincinnati against last year’s ECF opponent Atlanta Hawks.
Tip off is at 7:00 pm (EST) at Xavier University’s Cintas Center. The game will be televised on Fox Sports Ohio and NBATV, and broadcast on WTAM 1100 AM.
Sadly, we’ll have to wait a bit to see two of the three title-seekers above in game action, as neither Kyrie nor Kevin made the two day journey to Xavier and Philadelphia to play the Sixers. And, while there is no clear timetable for the return of Moses Cleveland, there are optimistic reports that KLove will start full practices as soon as this weekend, and could be in the starting lineup for opening night. In the meantime, LeBron may just have to carry the load on his own… even though he says otherwise.
So, with the Cavs down three starters (including Iman Shumpert) and their MIA backup PF (he who must not be named… or depicted), the team reportedly will go with this starting lineup:
PG – Mo Williams, SG – J.R. Smith, SF – LeBron James, PF – James Jones, C – Timofey Mozgov
As with the Wine & Gold Scrimmage on Monday, we will likely get a heavy dose of all of the young, athletic camp invitees who are all in a full-on scrum for the last seat on the bench (and possibly the 14th as well due to injuries and the holdout). So, get ready to see if guys like Quinn Cook, Austin Daye, Jared Cunningham, D.J. Stephens, Nick Minnerath and Michael Dunigan can do enough to nail their audition to wear a suit and take a lot of bus rides to Canton (or even unseat second-year man Smokin Joe Harris).
On the Hawks side of the ball, there a couple of new faces the Cavs will see, including former Spur big man, Tiago Splitter, and former Knicks swing man, Tim Hardaway, Jr. Gone is former defensive specialist, DeMarre Carroll (Raptors), and it remains to be seen if any of the Hawks’ injured rotation players (Kyle Korver, Thabo Sefalosha and Shelvin Mack) will be able to participate in tonight’s action. Their starting lineup, though, is listed as:
PG – Jeff Teague, SG – Kyle Korver, SF – Tim Hardaway Jr., PF – Paul Millsap, C – Al Horford
If Korver does suit up, it will mean his first action on the court this season could possibly be against the man who ended his season last year… Delly. And, even though it’s just a pre-season matchup, there’s at least a decent chance that there will be plenty of friction between these two teams leftover from their playoff matchup.
It’s all worthy of hype, not just from the creative folks at TNT, but also from our friends at Nike. Not to be outdone by the Quest spot, the swooshy ones dropped this ad about The Akronite: LeBron James, as read by poet and playwrite, Lemon Anderson, during the LEBRON XIII launch event in Akron on September 27, 2015. Enjoy… and GO CAVS!

JR BLOCK!
What is the record for three pt attempts in a preseason game? Let’s go for it.
We’re at 24 right now. I think we can get to 60.
Pretty move by LBJ… just didn’t go down…
The Hawks think this game counts.
LBJ with the selfie…
Sounds like Mo is killing it and Andy is actually playing.
Mo killing it on offense, but not defense… but that’s not really a surprise is it?
IT IS A PRE SEASON GAME —IF THE HAWKS FEEL IT IS IMPORTANT TO MAKE THIS A STATEMENT GAME —SO BE IT ——BRING IN THE INVITEES TO EVALUATE WHO MIGHT STAY AND BE ABLE TO HELP
Need to see a bit more rhythm from the Cavs first unit. Too nonchalant out there
It’s the first pre-season game… I’m not too worried. Hawks have decided to raise their intensity level on D is all…
Yeah, F that. But in the young guys if they want to avenge their playoff loss. Get our guys out of there. Who cares if we lose by 50 in the preseason?
Sure seemed like a reputation call on JR…
Ya, I came back to the screen just in time to see that and if these calls are starting THIS early? I might have to take a xanax before every game just to keep me from breaking something.
You guys would be losing it right now if a Hawks player hit a Cavs player like that in such a meaningless game
Not really… look at the replay again…
He wound up and hit him in the head, the replay makes it worse
Looked like he was clearly going for the ball and Horford sold it…
Imagine the second unit if it was Mo, J.R., Jefferson, Tristan, and Andy.
I kinda like Tristan and J.R. starting, to be honest. Gimme Moz, Andy, Jefferson, Shump, and Delly on unit 2. Just shutting down the other team’s offense while ours rests.
that’s a really dumb foul by JR
Or a really hard foul on purpose since the Hawks are ramping up their intensity…
It’s preseason, that;s a playoff foul
Eh… didn’t seem that bad to me…
Bazemore looking like he thinks he’s playing a playoff game… might be my least favorite Hawk…
Finding Mozgov for a pass is like finding Gronkowski. Except that Gronkowski has better hands.
I have zero care about preseason. Was so excited last year. Now? I don’t want any of our first 10 even touching the floor. Just keep getting in shape and stay healthy. Eyes on the Prize.
Definitely should have been a foul on Horford for the shoulder on Moz
phew, man is Mo Gotti bad at defense ……yikes
He was bad before. Now he is also old.
hawks guards going absolutely anywhere they want. Into the paint at will
All five starters at least +7. All six bench players at most -9. Top honors go to Kaun at -19 in 11 mninutes
Listening to the Knicks vs Foreign team game, and they’re talking about Derrick Williams like he invented the dunk.
HOPING TO SEE MORE OF DAYE AND STEPHENS THE 2ND HALF —–ANDY NEEDS TO LOOK TO SCORE MORE FOR THAT 2ND UNIT —-JUST ENJOYING WATCHING THE WINE AND GOLD AGAIN AND BLOGGING WITH MY CTB BROTHERS ——-LIFE IS GOOD –LIVING THE DREAM !!!
Richard Jefferson, Joe Harris, Quinn Cook, Sasha Kaun, and Matty Dellavadova combined 1 of 14.
Also, Cavs have yet to get to the line… underscoring the reliance on outside shooting…
Rough end to the half. Hawks close on 19-5 run…
Cavs went cold, shooting only 34%. Teague and Schroder eating Cavs guards alive… combined 8-10 with 22 pts…
Cavs sharing the ball well though with 15 assists…
Cook looked like he defended Schroeder well on both of those drives and Denis got the foul call bail out…
Refs missed goaltend on that Delly shot…
Good find that time to RJ though!
Teague schooled Cook on that last shot…
Nice to see Andy hit that 18 footer…
I can’t tell if Cook is really quick or if PGs out there just can’t cover each other.
He’s quick, but doesn’t always know what to do with the ball… Bad jump pass turnover the last time…
No Irving and Shump hurts the second lineup. They need Mo and/or J.R. to create offense.
Will be much less noticeable when we aren’t doing 5 for 5 swaps. I’d imagine there won’t be a time where we won’t see at least one of LBJ, Love, Moe, and later KI.
Kaun looks like the next version of Samardo/Hollins.
Disagree… he’s already shown more skill and quickness than either of those guys…
I dunno, looks kinda lost. Maybe he’s still adjusting to driving on the right side of the road.
Lol… He’ll be okay… as long as he stops popping Andy in the mouth on rebounds… smh
Lotta missed shots…
Lotta missed shots but think about how we look right now compared to last season this time. I dont think I’ve seen a single Le-Iso yet
5-in-5-out rotations annoy me, even in the preseason.
Yeah… it’s not hockey…
Looks like Atlanta is trying WAY harder than the Cavs, or is it just me?
Cavs only shooting like 32% which contributes to that vibe…
Lotta jump passes tonight… get the bugs out gentlemen!
But I’m surprised at how the offense is flowing this early in camp. You can tell these guys have either been together or are experienced vets. Getting good opportunities, but not finishing.
Cook hitting the circle button twice on that play… Braxton Miller-esque spin moves…
Cook will be matching up with either the lightning-quick Schroeder or Teague. It should be a good indicator of how he’ll fit.
Ah, my internet is so slow…….
JR SWISH!!!
Quinn Cook getting some early run.
Tough matchup for Mo with the speedy Teague and Schroeder, but he looks like he’s hustling out there…
Mozzy, having a little trouble finishing because of the injury, but always seems to be well positioned and is a load for the other team. I think he may be the breakout player this year.
That run out was just short of brilliant… Moz and LBJ fighting for the jam…
LBJ for THREE!
Jump stop foul on Bron…
The Cavs defense is really solid so far. Way more consistent already this year with how they’re defending pick and rolls. Mozzy is looking really rusty. Two missed passes and a missed dunk so far.
Definitely not in shape yet.
Blatt said he was only about 60% in basketball shape… certainly looks like it so far…
Moz needs to lay off the Beer Garden for a while.
J.R. Teardrop!
Great ball movement there by the first unit!!
Moz blocked by the rim…
Perfect pass by Mo!
Tremendous cut to the basket by JR!!
I wonder how much time Denis Schroeder puts into the blond streak in his hair. It’s always seemingly in the same spot and the same size streak. Crazy Germans…
Lineups might be more balanced with Delly starting and Mo off the bench.
Liking Kaun’s game. They should have gone inside to him a few more times…
I feel like once he gets up to speed, they could find so many ways to use him.
I know Joe Harris has he guaranteed contract and is ahead of Cook, Daye, etc. I’m just not sure he should be.
Preach Mike!
Can’t wait to see Cook out there tonight
Cavs just jacking up shots with this unit. Not a lot of penetration…
ooh, horrible pass there by RJ….
Joe’s shot is waaaaaayyyy off….
Not really liking his strut out there. Too much looking down.
Second unit is very interesting. Seems to have potential on the defensive end.
Delly with a nifty behind the back to Smokin Joe…
Blatt said he will probably be playing players in units, hence the rotation today will be nothing like what is supposed to be
Andy is such a great passer from the high post. He has yet to play a single minute next to Mozzy. So interested to see what they could do.
Kaun looks like he’s working hard underneath
Internet probs. Missed most of first quarter. Sounds like they’re shooting it well
Andy is moving very well out there
WILD THING !!! In the house, he’s back baby
Mo Gotti!!!!! Cavs on fire from outside!
Those are the Hawks Alternate Jerseys, which are always on sale for some………ok.
The Cavs are getting into their offensive motion a lot quicker this year already.
The Hawks jerseys, wow. Might be the worst ever
Yeah… just an eyesore…
James Jones is on fire!
Excited for basketball to be back. #allin 2015 -> #ballsdeep 2016
