Live Thread: Cavs @ Pistons
2015-11-17Okay… so it’s not Saturday night. Still, every time I see a trip to Detroit on the Cavs’ schedule, this song plays uncontrollably in my brain. It “pulls me through, comes on strong, and tells me what I gotta do,” so to speak. Sure it’s almost 40 years old, but I defy you to listen to this song and not “lose your mind,” or at least get pumped up for any big event… like tonight when the Cavs end their three game roady (and hopefully start a new win streak) with a showdown against the Pistons in “Detroit Rock City.”
Both teams are feeling a little raw, coming off of tough losses. The Pistons and their burgeoning star, Andre Drummond, got taken to task by their coach, the Master of Panic himself, Stan Van Gundy for their poor showing against the lowly Lakers on Sunday. The 95-87 loss was their fourth straight on a six game road trip, dropping Detroit back down to .500 on the season after a promising 5-1 start. Despite putting up astronomically historic numbers (18.5 ppg and 19.0 rpg) and his tremendous length, Andre the giant is still lacking in other areas (including just 1.4 blocks per game) according to SVG…
“Andre does a lot of great things but he is not protecting the rim at all,” said Van Gundy.
Stan was also critical of his PG, Reggie Jackson, after a nine point, five turnover performance against the Lakers. Jackson has still been the leading scorer for the Pistons (20.4 ppg), and put up a total of 40 points and 17 assists in two games against the Cavs last season after being traded to Detroit.
The Cavs also got an early season ripping from their royal leader for their collective poor effort and attitude in only their second defeat of the season against the Bucks on Saturday. LeBron made it pretty clear how he felt about the team despite their lofty 8-2 record…
“We’re not a great team right now,” James said. “I think we’re a good team. I think we expect we’re a great team, and we’re not. We have to get better in every facet of the game, and that’s every single facet of the game. We give a half-ass effort sometimes and expect that we can just make a run at the end. We’re not good enough to do that right now.”
Much of what ailed the Cavs were focus related mistakes, from careless passes, to failure to block out on rebounds, to a continued poor performance from the charity stripe… all things that will be achilles heels if they don’t clean them up against another long and physical team in the Pistons. LeBron expanded on his comments this morning a bit by tying them into the style of leadership he’s employing this year, and the high expectations he has for himself and his team…
“I’m the leader of this team, whatever it takes,” James said. “So if it’s laying into them, I’ll do that. Obviously, whatever this team needs, I’m going to do. I’m going to hold everyone accountable including myself. I expect nothing less than greatness out of all of us, and if we’re not able to do that, then I feel like I’ve failed.”
The Cavs will undoubtedly look to rectify their sloppiness and avoid giving yet another up-and-coming young team in the suddenly strong Central Division any sort of confidence for the future. The Pistons will be looking to defend their turf and take their best shot at the reigning EC Champs.
Probable starting lineups for the Cavs: Mo Williams, J.R. Smith, LeBron James, Kevin Love and Timofey Mozgov; and for the Pistons: Reggie Jackson, Kentavious Caldwell-Pope, Marcus Morris, Ersan Ilyasova and Andre Drummond.
Tip off is 7:30 pm (EST). Check out the game on Fox Sports Ohio or on WTAM 1100.
So, …GET UP! ….GET DOWN! …and GO CAVS!
Lebron working early. The whole team must be able to capitalize on this. Bury Detroit fast
Lebron with the and 1, 18 points already at 6/9 field goals
LeBron is on a mission right now.
Lebron on a ZONE!!
LEBRON TAKING CHARGE EARLY HOPING OTHERS FOLLOW —CHANGE OF SCRIPT
Do enough consumers wear Old Spice to warrant two different kinds?
I have to have the original kind because the new kind gives me a rash. too much information?
LMAO HA HA So right for the moment!
There’s an insane Andy fandom in me that wants to see him out there just because……
Yeah. Just keep him in shape. We’ll need him at some point.
TT doing good tonight!
Too much Lebron ISO
Yeah I know he’s hitting.
Oh, this ain’t bad. That ball is moving a bit.
Lebron ISO where he forces a shot is bad, but he just ISO’d and got Delly a wide look from 3, which he passed on to get JJ a wide open 3.
Bron does seem to be hitting the treys tonight (minus that one airball)
This is the lineup the Cavs should be able to pull away from…
Had to come back before we start to pull away.
JAMES FREAKING JONES!!! Welcome back Champ!
MDN with a great fake just couldn’t make the shot.
Yeah, take it to the hoop MDN, make them foul you.
And damn near shot an airball.
I was thinking that Fred on JJ.
Cavs shooting well, only gave up 1 offensive rebound, and had 7 assists on 12 baskets, but 5 turnovers.
Man, RJ, JJ, Delly all missing wide open looks from 3. Those need to start falling.
Good look at the buzzer, just didn’t fall.
Much Danger Ninja sighting…
You can expect a couple Delly Lobbas per game.
If people are going to call it that… I hope they stop doing it…
Piston’s don’t know about the Wombat???
LOADED WOMBAT PART 2!
I like this line up right now.
Agree!! It’s much better. I didn’t realize MDN was in
Cavs tried zone D, and got hit with the zone-buster…… a 3 pointer.
Also liked seeing Jefferson acting the leader out there on the second unit. Good to see.
LOADED WOMBAT!!
Delly Lobba!!! :p
UGH… gross
This line-up should have good D and doesn’t come at the expense of shooting. *Cough* minus JFJ *cough*
JR looking good so far and Lebron too
I missed that Delly/TT show
Ron Jeremy sure seems like he’s creating a reasonable facsimilie of his Magic team from 09…
You know, I missed that guy when he was gone. Glad to see him back.
Just give the ball to JR! It’s his night
I feel like I haven’t typed JFJ in a while…
Yeah, he’s got to hit that shot
DELL-Y, DELL-Y, DELL-Y. Fake Kraken for LBJ three alone in the corner.
I’ll book your under 7 bet EG, lol.
He may hit the over this quarter.
Oh sure… now you want the bet… ;)
@ESPNNBA: LeBron surpasses “The Logo”! James has eclipsed Jerry West and is now No. 19 on the all-time scoring list. https://t.co/xou0CrhOG5
Another very cool milestone…
That one looked better… nice drive and kick from Delly…
LeBron looks angry at his teammates.
Ilysova is destroying Love.
Pretty sure that last drive was against Delly…
Ah, looked to me like Love got burned on Ilyasova’s first step. As much as I love Love, that particular drive involved a poor close-out. Might have to go back and look. Could be wrong.
Thought it was Delly, but my feed on my laptop is super small…
Everyone in the building knew LBJ was going to take a three.
No offense tonight. Gonna be a long one. I miss Kyrie.
Highly anticipating that return. Can’t wait for January.
Another slow start. Deja vu from last season.
Air Mail James…
Cavs putting up a stinker.
Reggie might go for 40 tonight…
4 turnovers already, and Jackson 4-4 with 2 assists.
Mo is just getting ABUSED. Got to get Delly in.
Very sloppy for two days off and a public calling out. I’m not worried long term, but it does not appear they’ve taken the “we’re not great yet” to heart.
Including LBJ himself with his two turnovers already off lazy passes…
Reggie Jackson unafraid of Mo…
No one is afraid of Mo.
Mo Williams is not good at defense.
Mo has to go under screens with Jackson. Make him shoot a mid range shot.
Hands Mozzy. Come on.
Thanks for the save Irsan…
Lots of TOs early on.
Crowd doesn’t sound like it’s living up to my imagined Detroit Rock City level of noise…
Lebron o/u 3pt attempts after making that first one? I say 7
I’ll take the over
I’ll go under… his average is six I think…
Actually… it’s 4.2…
LBJ with the early deep three!
Lebron with a couple lazy turnovers already.
Still some residual sloppiness for the Cavs early…
JR is HOT tonight!!!!
JR SWISH!
The JR show!!!!!!
JR looks locked in….
I’m going to be watching to see how well Mo keeps Jackson from driving the lane every play. I think they are gonna go after Mo all game long.
WOW LEBRON ON THE VERGE OF PASSING ” THE LOGO ” ——PISTONS WIL GIVE US THEIR BEST SHOT ( LIKE EVERYBTEAM IS GOING TO DO ) WILL USE THIS GAME TO GAUGE WHERE THEIR TEAM IS —-WE ALL KNOW HOW MUCH DRUMMOND HAS IMPROVED WANT TO SEE IF KALDWEL-POPE HAS IMPROVED THAT MUCH ALSO
Dear Cavs,
MAKE YOUR FREAKING FREE THROWS!
Windhorst brought this up today as being a growing concern.
I think I was way ahead of Windy on this one… ;)
I don’t think anyone will ever pass Kareem.
Probably only Delly has a shot at it… ;)
Of course duh!!!!!!!
LBJ has a shot if he starts making his free throws
LeBron needs 10 points to pass Jerry West in scoring.
Nice to see SVG’s praise for Delly. He’s one of the best coaches in the NBA.
I wish I heard him. He’s always given respect to our players.
Nice write-up re: SVG, Jackson, and Drummond EG.
Wonder how Jackson and Drummond will respond to SVG’s comments. They’re younger guys, so they might resent his comments. On the other hand, they’re professionals so they should expect such critiques.
Then you have LBJ doing his mid-season Popovich routine to a veteran-laden Cavs team. One would expect CLE to respond accordingly.
Ladies and gentlemen, your numbers for tonight:
CLE is a 4.5pt over DET, with an o/u @ 195. Smart money is on DET and the over. There has been a ton of late action on the over, so tread carefully.
I’ll take CLE in a nail-biter, 100-96 over DET.
Go Cavs!!!
Correction: The ton of late action has been on the under, NOT the over… apologies to all!
Preach AC…
I was worried about this game until they lost to the Bucks – now they’ll be mad and win big. Sorry Detroit.
Detroit lost a few in a row though. And lost to the Lakers on Sunday.
