Preview/Live Thread: Cavs vs. Thunder (#CaughtOffGuard)
2015-12-17Not yet, Cavs fans… not quite yet. Just in case you haven’t seen Kyrie Irving’s tweet from yesterday, refuting the early report that he’d be suiting up (in something other than other than his swank designer duds on the sideline) for tonight’s eagerly anticipated contest against the Oklahoma City Thunder, be advised that KI will be a spectator for at least one more game. His return is tantalizingly close, and not just to the fans, but also to Uncle Drew himself, who has reportedly continued to lobby the Cavs’ front office and coaches to allow him to return to active duty. Understandably, there’s a bit of a letdown on all fronts about this delay, especially as the Thunder come to town representing maybe the toughest test of this still young season for the Cavaliers. Not to mention the fact that his presence could have buoyed a suddenly paper thin Cleveland back court.
Also sitting this one out for the wine & gold is the recently returned Iman Shumpert. Shump was officially ruled out after suffering a groin injury in only his second game back from his season-long absence with a wrist injury. The new issue is reportedly a mild one, but the Cavs likely want to take no chances that it could get exacerbated. Iman is listed as day-to-day, although even if he didn’t have this latest malady to deal with, he might still not have been available to the team tonight… especially after other amazing events unfolded in his life today…
Congratulations to Iman and Teyana as they welcome baby Iman Tayla Shumpert Jr. into the world! (This is also the first female progeny I’ve ever heard of being named a Junior).
So, Kyrie and Shump are out, but hey, you might say… the Cavs have gone 14-7 without their starting back court so far, so why worry? Well… there’s more…
Mo Williams is also listed as questionable for this game with a right thumb sprain he sustained in the Celtics game. Odds are that Mo will give it a go, but given his near non-existent defense on most nights, the thumb will likely impact what he can do on the side of the court where he does most of his damage. Also, Matthew Dellavedova may be downplaying some injury issues as he was on the trainer’s table getting his back stretched after the Boston game. Delly also missed a practice while the team was in Orlando due to the sore back.
If you’re counting along at home, that’s two guards out and two more banged up, which leaves the Cavs perilously thin with only J.R. Smith and Jared Cunningham fully healthy to man the backcourt, and try and stop the dangerous Russell Westbrook. At least help is on the way…
Cavs recall Joe Harris from Canton. Charge currently in Calif. Cavs also announce G Iman Shumpert (groin) out tonight, questionable Sunday.

But seriously… Westbrook would present a daunting challenge to the Cavs’ guards even if everyone was healthy. And, since LeBron is likely to have his hands full matching up with Kevin Durant, the Cavs may need some additional minutes at guard from Richard Jefferson as well.
The Thunder (17-8) come in on a six game winning streak, where they’ve held their opponents under 100 points in every game. They are on the second night of a back-to-back, however, and have not fared well on the road against Eastern Conference teams thus far this season, going just 1-3. They are paced by Durant (third in the league in scoring at 27.3) and Westbrook (sixth at 25.6 with three triple doubles already this season) offensively, and feature big man and defensive specialist, Serge Ibaka (seven boards and 2.5 blocks per game).
This game also represents the first “homecoming” for former Cav, Dion Waiters. St. Weirdo has been his usual mercurial self for the Thunder, coming off the bench to average 10.8 ppg, while shooting 40% (36% from three point range). Dion’s been shooting it well of late, however, and had one of his better games of the season with 18 points on 6-10 shooting last night against Portland. It’s probably safe to assume he’s had tonight’s game circled on his calendar for some time now, as if the Cavs’ already thin guard rotation needed more on their plate…
The Cavs (16-7) have been on a modest three game win streak of their own, and have held their last two opponents to 76 and 77 points respectively. Cleveland’s front court will need to shine tonight to compensate for their back court deficit. It will be key for LeBron, Kevin Love, Timofey Mozgov and Tristan Thompson to come up big, and make the Thunder work hard on defense. Hopefully, Moz can continue his recent resurgence in the middle, and take advantage of Enes Kanter and Stephen Adams.
The probable starting lineups are… for the Cavaliers: C Timofey Mozgov; PF Kevin Love; SF LeBron James; SG J.R. Smith; PG Matthew Dellavedova. And for the Thunder: C Steven Adams; PF Serge Ibaka; SF Kevin Durant; SG Andre Roberson; PG Russell Westbrook.
Game time is 8 p.m. (EST) and it will be nationally televised on TNT.
This is likely to be a tough test for the Cavs, but even with their depleted guard situation, I still think the wine & gold will be able to defend their home turf against the potentially weary Thunder. Cavs win a close one 107-104…
GO CAVS!
DELLY TIME!
Nice pass Delly. He’s giving them what he can.
Delly’s looking good as usual!!! What a pass!
Nice little run there.
GREAT two way play by LBJ that time! Terrific D on Durant…
JR starting to really get that teardrop down…
James set a nice pick on Delly that time to free up Westbrook.
Fratello just referred to Delly as a torpedo when diving for loose balls. Al Horford would concur. And Korver.
It sounds like you do.
Cavs were in desperate need of that Delly trey…
Westbrook unguardable tonight.
You could’ve left off ‘tonight’.
Delly’s playing off forcing him to hit the midrange jumper… he’s nailing it.
This makes 2 games in a row that we aren’t getting many loose balls.
Cavs failing to get the 50/50 rebounds…
For old times’ sake, Waiters misses a long deuce.
Ugh. Way too. Easy.
Dion is still king of the long two attempt…
10-0 run…
No guard penetration tonight is not helping
Another 8-0 run by the Thunder… this time with LBJ on the court…
And even worse; KD and RW off the court.
Foul Dion there love
Too many jump shots
OKC WITH GOOD SCOUTING REPORT ON LOVE —STAY DOWN / DON’T GO FOR FAKES—GIVING KEVIN PROBLEMS RIGHT NOW ——T.T. Me too! We have a game right now. Hopefully something special coming from the King!
Seems like Andy has lost his luck from the elbow this season…
AV’s automatic shot is not so automatic tonight…
That was a hell of a possession by Danger……
Your sarcasm is syrupy and thick tonight Taximike… ;)
Lol. It just struck me funny when he did like 4 different bad things in less than 24 seconds.
JC way too tentative…. he’s gotta attack. Too scared to do anything.
14 for KD already. We got no one to stop him.
That’s LBJ’s job…
One would think so….
Yeah I don’t understand why the fans booed Dion.
Yeah agreed, dumb. I get he wore out his welcome but didn’t do anything to warrant that.
Can’t believe we are missing 3 guards.
Plus Delly has a sore back…
Nice defense there, KD just makes a ridiculous mid-range shot.
Love looks real soft tonight. Didn’t he play against these guys for years out West?
He got on the floor for that loose ball steal early… guards have had a hard time getting the ball inside to him with Ibaka…
Always a step ahead of me evil.
AND ONE! (even Dion said it…)
85 million…
Pretty sure Rich Paul excluded FTs in the fine print…
HAHA… definitely easier to be bitter about that when he gave up his leverage at the deadline.
They called a foul on LeBron… quick… alert Tommy Heinsohn!
RJ TRIPLE!!
Looked like LBJ got fouled… good save by TT…
Ninja in the game…
Wanna see the Cavs play Andy with LeBron on the bench. Need a half court quarterback, especially with the way okc is defending.
I’d like to see some ninja
Seconded…
I really hope Ibaka keeps launching threes…
HAHA… definitely. He doesn’t shoot well from outside when the pressure’s on i.e. big games.
37% for his career. I’d sure rather he not be taking open 3’s……..
Not tonight though…
8-0 run since LBJ went out…
Cavs really struggled to get Love the ball in the post, hopefully that changes as the game wears on
Ibaka’s long arms…
Moz has got to shoot that…
Wow. Dion got booed. Kind of classless by the Cavs fans.
Yeah… don’t get that…
I agree Nate he did try
I never particularly care for his play, and he surely did not try to fit in last year.
Still not a reason to boo the guy…
Dion getting booed…
Delly has his work cut out for him tonight.
Not sure Delly could have played better D that time on Russell…
Wonder if Dion jacks up more than 15 shots tonight. Or maybe takeoff for a dunk from the free throw line. You know he wants to shine tonight.
Beautiful feed from Delly
Nice give and go by Delly and KLove…
Durant playing some inspired D so far.
Gonna have to hit some outside shots tonight. Tough matchup for Love inside w/Ibaka.
Beautiful move by mozzy
GREAT up and under dunk move by Moz!
First of many cut aways to Kyrie on the bench tonight…
LBJ with an early heat check…
This was the shot that led to it…
Stephen Adams channelling his inner Pebbles with that hairstyle…
Like the start w the 3s abs love hitting the floor for loose ball
JR SWISH!!
Please let this be the night that Bron’s jumper is fixed…
Let’s go Cavs!
Marv and the Czar! Goin old School tonight!
Oh snap, is that Mike Fratello?????
The Czar!
Cavs can win. Should be able to dominate Kanter. This is a game where Moz needs to step up.
I hope St. Weirdo is Cavs MVP tonight.
This Shump story is too great. Wow.
Yeah. Completely unrelated to basketball and perhaps inappropriate, I think its a blessing that she was born that way. My wife had both of our kids at home and it was awesome. Hospitals are for medical emergencies. Birth is the opposite. Its all nature. Anyway, congrats to the Shumps.
If we lose tonight, I hope Waiters scores a million. Always liked him, even if he wasn’t the right choice at #4 that year.
So when Delly goes to the bench who will defend Westbrook? Cunningham? Maybe?
Can’t put Jr on him cause he will get in foul trouble quick.
Well unless LBJ and KLove go crazy tonight in terms of scoring this game could be over in the first half.
CLF I LOVE YOUR POSITIVITY BUT YOU NEVER BET WITH YOUR HEART —OKC 109-101–SORRY GUYS !!
I agree and I just hope that the Cavs find a way to make it competitive.
HAHA… thanks NOMAD! Actually, I went with Vegas… but I know what you’re saying! Plus, EG’s with me!
You know it! You just gotta BELIEVE!
Might be a good thing that Mo isn’t playing. Welp!
Good evening CtB! Your numbers for this evening:
CLE is a 2.5pt favorite over OKC, with an o/u @ 203.5. The smart money is on a CLE cover, along with the UNDER. There are some interesting trends on the UNDER bet: 1. OKC has gone UNDER 6 of their last 7 on no rest. 2. CLE/OKC has gone UNDER 16 of their last 19 games.
I’ll take CLE 103-100 over OKC. GO CAVS!
Plus Delly is hurting. Gonna get roasted on the wing tonight.
No Mo…
