Live Thread: Cavs @ Suns (#TimeToGoSupernova)
2015-12-28After three straight games of ice cold shooting (the last of which was also accompanied by a total defensive collapse), the Cavs should be due for an explosion of epic proportions. Especially against the imploding celestial body that is the Phoenix Suns these days. The Cavs’ shooting stars have been anything but lately, as gravity and isolation have dragged their overall shooting percentage down to just 35% (90-255) since they last lit up the sky against the Sixers. The long range bombs have been an even less successful 25% (21-83) in that time. Fortunately, they face off against a Suns team that has spiraled out of orbit this season, and is on the verge of a complete meltdown.
The Suns are now down two starters, with Eric Bledsoe (who had been having a stellar year) suffering a knee injury that reportedly will keep him out until after the All-Star break, and the ongoing misadventures of Markieff Morris who is serving a two game suspension for literally throwing in the towel… right at his coach’s head.
While the Cavs have lost two straight, and are coming off of an embarrassing loss to the Trailblazers, the Suns can one-up them on that front having lost four straight, including Saturday’s debacle at home where they handed the lowly 76ers (who were without Jahlil Okafor) their first road win of the year. And, as if getting a face-full of sweaty terrycloth wasn’t humiliation enough… Coach Jeff Hornacek’s seat has been hotter than the surface of the sun lately, with Phoenix management firing two of his assistant coaches against his wishes. It may only be a matter of time before Hornacek himself burns up or out.
The Cavs don’t have nearly the issues the Suns have, but their lackluster performance on Saturday has certainly given rise to a nebula of questions and concerns. Mostly, they could use a return to a larger rotation, and a return to sharing the ball the way they had been doing earlier in the season. Everyone is healthy and available on the Cavs’ side of things, as Kyrie Irving will return from a scheduled day of rest. Hopefully, with a day off to dwell on the mysteries of their basketball universe, they can return with enough fire power to inflict a massive and catastrophic destruction on the unstable Suns. If not, things might get a whole lot hotter for Coach David Blatt, LeBron and the rest of the team.
Projected starting lineup for the Cavs: C Timofey Mozgov; PF Kevin Love; SF LeBron James; SG J.R. Smith; PG Kyrie Irving. And for the Suns: C Alex Len; PF Jon Leuer; SF P.J. Tucker; SG Devin Booker; PG Brandon Knight.
Gametime is 9 p.m. (EST)/6 p.m. for those of you on the West Coast, and all the action can be seen on Fox Sports Ohio… or heard on WTAM 1100.
Since I’m already on a positive kick… I’ll predict the Cavs to go supernova tonight and light up the NBA galaxy… while leaving the Suns to get sucked into the resulting supermassive black hole. Prediction: Cavs 112, Suns 84.
KLove hitting a couple from deep… No problems scoring tonight… just need some tougher D…
He needs to take offense that Len is getting easy boards against him and body that dude up
Do you think they are loosening that defense up a little so they can be more free to play better offense? Idk I’m crazy probablu
Will the Cavs recognize that KLove is rockin’ it tonight and feed the beast? He should get 25-30 shots tonight.
By the Lerbon trots his butt across half court, half the shot clock is gone
We suck on the defensive glass.
You mean defensive? Already given up 9 Offensive rebounds.
Lots of lucky bounces for the Suns.
Yea seems all the 50/50 balls going to Suns. That stuff evens out in the end hopefully.
Lebron still faded to his left on that three. Can he please rehire Ray Allen as his personal shooting coach? He doesn’t need to fill a roster spot. Just teach Lebron to shoot againx
Think Kyrie gave that up too early, but still worked out.
I feel like he still struggles with the idea of more fixed rotations still a little. A little too ready to ride the “hot” hand of a lineup. I think that works in Euroleague where there is far fewer overwhelmingly more talented guys that you want on the court even if they are “struggling”.
Great strip by RJ…
This offense looks so bad when Lebron comes back in
Cavs just not closing out on guys on three line… and Suns are hitting almost every one…
That’s what this team is missing, more one on one from Shumpert.
The Unicorn! LBJ triple…
Does anyone know what rotations are like in euro leagues? It seems like Blatt didnt really settle into a good rotation until we were foeced to only play 7 MAYBE 8 guys last season in the playoffs.
Moz isn’t exactly good with his hands… but it seems like guys just fire the ball at him because of his size…
Is it my imagination or does Shump seem off tonight?
Honestly, he is hardly ever on offensively.
Seems too scared to even attempt a shot tonight.
Delly got a rare turnover there.
This is why you don’t use the whole bench at same time.
Our defense isn’t too great tonight
Cavs not taking care of the ball all of a sudden…
The demotion to bench helping Mosgov get his fire back. When has he ever had 3 blocks in 1 game?
Mozilla is back on D!
Oh snap!!!! Mozzy CAN catch the ball.
Bench has played well but I’m always puzzled why we can’t stagger our rotations so that at least one of Kyrie, Love or LBJ is on the floor at all times. I particularly think that Love would benefit the most from that arrangement.
As long as Delly is in, we’re good.
Great point…
I just think the lineup of Delly, Shump, Jones, RJ and Moz is a little too one dimensional at times even with Delly’s excellent play. It also seriously lacks rebounding. Especially if TT is going to start.
It could also have to do with kyries minutes restriction. Idk though just making some guesses.
That may be true too. Then I would think pulling Love at the same time you pull Kyrie would help so he can go back in when LBJ sits. I know its more complicated than that but Kevin can be an elite offensive focal point even with (comparatively) bad teammates a la Minnesota. I’d like to see us make use of that with the bench mob more often.
Ok never mind. It will work.
Maybe some of the guys aren’t getting enough sleep?

Kyrie & Shump, who both became fathers for the 1st time this season, incorporated cradling imaginary babies into their pregame handshake
Cavs shooting 63% but D still not there, allowing Suns to shoot 57%.
D will improve… just happy to see them come out firing and hitting…
I’m telling you the demotion to bench helping Mosgov get his fire back
That was some good D from Timo… just a bad bounce on the second…
Good D by Timo on the oop.
Wow just noticed no Mo Williams
JAMES FREAKING JONES! (finally)
Yeah that Delly-Moz Op won’t work if Moz can’t catch the ball.
Oh Timo….
So far liking the bench. Hope I am not wrong
AGREE WITH ATTEMPTING TO GET MORRIS/ REHAB HIM –IF THE PRICE IS RIGHT ( MIMIA DID IT WITH WHITESIDE LAST YEAR ) –WOULD BE A HUGE PLUS ——-LET’S GO DANCING ALL NIGHT LONG TONIGHT !!
Blatt going deep into the rotation tonight…
Like that fight in Timo there!!
RJ TRIPLE!
LBJ just moved into 17th all time scoring…
Alright Jefferson!!!
Delly!!! Nice play from Lebron
Didn’t that seem like a travel by Knight?
Was too busy watching Love letting him waltz to the rim……
LBJ locomotive strong!!!
Sweet Trey by Delly and nice move to the rim by Bron!
“You can’t leave him open,” says the Phoenix analyst of Delly.
No Way!!!! LOL Love it.
LBJ AND 1….
I think this line up will end up finishing most games for the Cavs.
DELLY TREY!
How many 3 pointers are we gonna let them shoot with nobody within 10 feet. Good lord.
Defense is blah
TT might struggle against Leuer…
NO more misses from Love.
Both teams hot and getting open looks.
TT didn’t get that switch on Tucker…
Kyrie with a fast start!
No need to rub it in!
;)
JR SWISH… heating up…
Would be nice to see him go off for 25. He hasn’t gone en fuego this season.
I feel like we haven’t seen lebron with a headband much this season. Or is that just me not paying attention?
I think you’re right…
Broken play comes back to bite the Cavs…
Bron bricking a pair of FTs…
KLove… doing work inside…
JR SWISH!!
Kyrie with steal and easy break for layup… good omen!
Totally agree! Is time to go supernova!! Go Cavs!
Dance party… the new Bowling Trip?
I think Kyrie is gonna get buckets tonight…
I think it might be awhile before we see last years Kyrie. Hope I’m wrong though.
I think you’re wrong… ;)
Ahhh, it only took about 6 minutes for you to be right I see.
Just five points for LBJ to pass Alex English for 17th place on the all-time scoring list…
Cavs have to take a page out of Tim Misny’s book tonight and “make… them… pay…”
Update to starting lineup…
I can’t say I’m surprised.
Maybe it’ll help them get off to a faster start…
Only issue is that Delly and Moz don’t really have the chemistry that TT and Delly do…
I know I’m not supposed to, but I want to us to try to rehabilitate Markieff Morris. He was supposed to be the better one, and now his brother is killing it in Detroit. What could go wrong?
If the Suns would take Harris and the trade exception (not sure if they can be combined?) for Morris… that would be a good deal…
