Live Thread: Cavs vs. Suns (#CloudyWithAChanceOfTempo)
2016-01-27[Editor’s Note: It was a busy content day here at C:tB, and even though there’s a game tonight, make sure you check out both Robert’s Point Four-ward and David’s Wood Shop article… they are excellent!]
If someone had bet me that Phoenix Suns Head Coach, Jeff Hornacek, would have outlasted David Blatt as an employed NBA coach this season… I would have lost a lot of money. Despite his seat being hotter than the surface of the actual sun, with a disappointing team featuring players in open revolt and a torrential downpour of injuries, Hornacek still wears a suit and holds a clipboard while Blatt now gets paid to not show up for work. Or maybe he’s just sitting on a beach with Hans, earning 20 percent. In any event, it’s not my intention to rain on the Cavs’ Ty Lue parade (or sprint drills as the case may be), but only to point out how suddenly the storms of discontent can roll in and cast an unexpected shadow on an organization.
The good news is that the Suns are still sinking in the West, and a Cavs victory should be a little easier to predict given the disarray and tired legs of their opponent (Phoenix lost the front end of a back-to-back last night against the equally miserable Sixers). They have fallen to 14-32, and have lost their last 11 road games in a row. The injury bug has fairly decimated their back court, with Eric Bledsoe out for the season and Brandon Knight ailing, although backup, Archie Goodwin, has had three straight 20+ point games in their stead. Phoenix also features two buzzed about potential trade targets for the Cavs in towel-throwing problem child, Markieff Morris, and misused big man, Tyson Chandler.
Despite the recent cloud cover for the Cavs, there was a bit of blue sky that peeked through in Monday’s win against the T-Wolves, as the team secured the first victory of the Ty Lue era. They seemed a little less winded from the up-tempo style that Lue is incorporating, and their shooting cold front thawed out a bit. Since the Suns like to run the ball a lot themselves (they average 100.7 possessions per 48 minutes, good for fourth in the league), the Cavs should get lots of practice getting up and down the court. The real question is whether they can weather the Suns attack and make some defensive adjustments and improvements, although they might have a little help from former Sun, Mike Longabardi, who was officially hired as the Cavs’ Defensive Coordinator today.
The Cavs beat the Suns when they squared off in Phoenix, eclipsing them 101-97 with a scorching fourth quarter performance from Kyrie Irving (including a dagger three with 22 seconds left). That game also marked the debut of Tristan Thompson in the starting lineup, a move that will be replicated for tonight’s contest.
Probable starting lineup for the Cavs is: Kyrie Irving, J.R. Smith, LeBron James, Kevin Love and Tristan Thompson. And, for the Suns: Archie Goodwin, Devin Booker, P.J. Tucker, Alex Len and Tyson Chandler.
The game starts at 7pm (EST) and can be seen on FSO, or heard on WTAM 1100.
Forecast: Cavs brighten their outlook without letting the Suns shine, and win 117-105.
Also… keep an eye on LeBron James, as he could be just the 17th player in NBA history to reach the 26K plateau if he can rain down 36 points tonight.
Don’t help baseline, Kevin.
Delly with two straight fantastic passes on offense sandwich ingredients a horrid defensive possession.
More of that please KLove!
I’m not watching the game, but the Pistons have a 12 point 1st quarter against the Sixers…that must be a fun view…
i love when delly slightly presses after a score
I love when Delly everything always.
I see you working, Kevin.
Lotta pinball free throws tonight…
Klove gotta finish there. Left hand has to be an enormous offseason priority.
Why was Delly cheating so far off of Goodwin?
One disadvantage of having Chandler on your team is the awful free throw shooting…
Lol at Chandler………..
Nice board work, Klove.
MY GOD! I mean… WTF refs? It’s not like JR is a criminal…
Klove gotta finish there. Left hand has to be an enormous offseason priority.
He’s a Smooth Criminal.
My league pass says unavailable due to technical difficulties. This is a regular occurrence. I’m starting to get very annoyed. Anyone else have this problem? It happens with playback also and doesn’t matter which computer I’m on.
I don’t have that issue at the moment… but it has happened a few times this year….
I’ve had lots of problems w their streaming service. Right now I can watch the game on my cup, but not on my Amazon box for some reason.
Mine was unavailable on my PC too. I had to switch to my phone, where League Pass is working.
Great find and score from Bron to AV! Man, I missed that!
and thats why we love ANDY
#NeverTradeAndy that is all.
Andy steal!
The team is in the midst of an identity crisis. So far the “fast pace” offense’s only result is to mess up our D.
Its not the team we are. It might work for stretches against certain matchups, but its not who we are. LBJ was good in uptempo game when he was younger, but not anymore.
Lebron never played in a true uptempo team. We all know he likes to pound the ball and run the high PnR. He always was great in transition though.
I think the fastest pace team he played on was maybe his rookie season, and even that was only around the middle of the NBA…
Yeah, because in the name of keeping him happy, GMs have always put veteran teams around him. I think he would put up even more historical numbers if he played in an uptempo team in his prime.
Good dime to RJ from LBJ…
Wtf was that call? Suns have flopped their way into 5 calls already.
Not enough to play with pace on offense… gotta keep up and closeout on D…
Defense is the first thing to go when the pace picks up. Unless you have a bunch of really young and in shape dudes, defense usually suffers.
Doesn’t suffer for Warriors… they are in constant motion on both ends…
Young and in shape dudes. That’s kinda my point. That’s not our personnel
Iggy is not young… Livingston is not young, Bogut is not young, Barbosa is not young… Speights is not young…
Look more like an ISO heavy team on O to me….(/s)
LeBron engaged all the sudden. Maybe Kyrie giving an Ole dunk to Weems fired him up.
Lebron didnt bother either on that play.
Instant Oatmeal RJ
Shump is terrible this year. I think him and Kyrie can’t handle being new dads and it’s ruining their game.
I think they both may be dating Kardashians…
Could also be they are both coming back from injury and haven’t even played 15 games yet.
Drive and kick to JR for three needs to happen at least twice a quarter…
Sterling transition D there…
The Cavs can play at a higher pace, but I’m not convinced it’s as effective as their low pace game…
Their best fast pace guys are Kyrie (coming back from injury and refuses to push the ball across the court), Shump (coming back from injury and prone to long-two-itis), and LBJ (slowing down with age). We aren’t really a team of young athletic horses. Moz, Love, LBJ, TT, Kyrie, J.R. – all are better suited to a half court game and lots of off ball movement. Also know as the Princeton Offense. If only we had someone who had experience running that.
I agree that their personnel don’t seem especially suited to a faster pace. My first thought on the ‘faster pace’ was that it was a way to say ‘we’re doing something different’ with the exit of the old coach. Even if Blatt initially suggested the faster pace, as Windhorst reported, not sure it’s a good idea. And if you play faster against the Dubs, for example, it’s just playing their game.
AGreed. I do like pushing the ball up the court quickly, but that doesn’t mean a faster pace, necessarily.
Apart from the fastbreak scoree by Love and the missed fadeaway by Kyrie, every shot in the second is a midrange jumper. Atrocious offense.
Pretty embarrassing start against one of the worst teams in the league.
That was disappointing… Shump threw it right into RJ’s back…
Good aggression by Love!
He doesn’t run the floor very well though.
Kyrie just doesn’t look right…
Its like the spirit was sucked out of him when Blatt was fired…
AC getting so frustrated.
What’s he saying? That they aren’t galvanized?
Its basketball’s answer to Romeo Crennel’s UFO defense.
LOVE AUDITIONING TOO ?
Andy sighting… Lue going 10 deep…
I just don’t get fouling a guy without fouling him hard enough to make it hard for him to get the bucket…
Ticky tack fouls…
DIDN’T WE JUST HIRE THE EX SUNS DEFENSIVE COACH—I WOULD THINK HE WOULD KNOW THEIR WEAKNESSES AND HOW TO DEFND / EXPLOIT THEM ?——WE LOSE TO THE SUNS WE WILL SET AN ALL TIME RECORD BLOG ” OUT OF FRUSTRATION “
No, he’s just instituting their horrible defense to make it ours.
Yeah… Markieff is definitely gonna get out of his funk against the Cavs… you can just feel it…
He’s auditioning.
love at the elbow and shump throws up a 21 footer. smh
RJ sighting…
At least guys are getting on the floor… both Moz and Love have so far to try and grab loose balls…
RJ sighting! Must be out of the doghouse.
Well I guess the fast pace thing didn’t last long lol.
They still seem to take so long to get a shot in the half court…
Is really frustrating watching the Cavs game after game playing down to their opponent instead of taking care of business right away.
We sure do play some terrible defense. The uptempo offense does not seem to be having much impact.
Why don’t teams just spread the floor and run iso’s from out high every play against us. I feel like every single guard in the league can dribble once and get by our guards (including delly).
Certainly seems so lately… even Shump has looked at best ordinary and at worst bad…
Damn… Delly had time to drive that ball before the buzzer…
They should fire David Blatt.
They should fire Mike Longabardi…
I like the result (obviously) but that wasn’t a whole lot of ball movement…
Goodwin is a pretty good Knight replacement… been watching him the last few games…
Wow… really late whistle… and from the back side…
Holtkamp not in our camp any more.
Well at least they have 7 assists already. I’m not sure if this is a fast pace tho
Mozzy PnR is working well so far…
Defensive rotations leaving a lot to be desired….
As are the boxouts.
Bad closeout by Bron on that three…
Good feed from LBJ and cut from Moz…
Does it feel like they’re upping the tempo? It just looks the same to me…
I was going to post the same thing……..
I can’t tell if it looks like they are getting into sets quicker or if they are just finally actually running sets…
Terrible shot clock awareness by Kyrie there.
Sigh… these refs are turrible…
What’s her name is quick on the whistle.
Yeah… Lauren is usually a friend to the Cavs… not tonight…
JR would’ve been ejected for that foul.
I was thinking the same thing haha
Great block by TT!
Clean steal by JR… refs-putation call…
Kevin playing some “arms up” D… draws the foul on Len…
KLOVE for three!
I sense a victory tonight and we should win. 116-95 the final.
If they lose to this atrocious team…We’re in trouble.
Speaking of Markieff Morris, what are the odds that the NBA player who broke his hand punching a staff member of his team wasn’t him? He was clearly the favorite starting the season.
And, if not him… at least someone in a Kings jersey…
Good point. The Cousins/Rondo combo had pretty good odds as well.l
Speaking of knuckleheads that like fighting, whatever happened to Larry Sanders?
This is the last news article about him I could find… from last October just before season started…

Let’s see how our TPE trade is going to look tonight…
