Live Thread: Cavs vs. Kings (#TheRoyalWe)
2016-02-08With the Cavs taking on the Kings in the penultimate game before the All-Star Break, they might just have discovered a more schizophrenic opponent than they themselves have been lately. After all, Sacto rides into town, a fairly unmajestic loser of seven of their last eight games (after they had gotten close to making themselves a threat for the 8th playoff seed in the West with an impressive five game winning streak), and with rumors that George Karl may finally be on the verge of losing his asylum to his inmates. We may just enjoy this one…
Reports recently surfaced that Karl might be dismissed before the All-Star break, and the Kings (21-30) haven’t really denied it. Still, George could have been using the “royal we” to defend his team’s disappointing play of late…
“We’re in a losing mode,” Karl said. “We’re losing games, but our basketball has not been bad basketball. It’s been not good enough to win basketball, which happens in the NBA every night. Just because you lose doesn’t mean you don’t play good basketball.”
According to ESPN, the numbers don’t really back him up, as the Kings have allowed 111.3 points per 100 possessions during this 1-7 stretch, 6.4 more than it was giving up in its first 43 games. Boogie Cousins also cited the disease of “we” in his comments on the losing…
“Biggest thing, I guess we’ve got to find a better energy and effort as a team,” said Cousins, who indicated the team had a bigger issue than just energy and effort. “We’ve got to find a solution, because right now whatever we’re doing isn’t working.”
The Cavs meanwhile, are way ahead of the Kings, having already dispensed of their Head Coach nine games ago. With a 6-3 mark after a bounce-back win over the Pelicans, they are looking to close out their pre-ASB schedule by taking care of affairs on their home court to remain the ruling class of the East.
“We need to win every time we play, but coming off those two losses we had to show our mental toughness and understand we have to take care of home floor,” said Kyrie Irving.
Of course, to do that, the King himself needs to use less of the “royal we” when criticizing the defensive efforts the Cavs have provided of late, and take more of the onus for lapses on that end of the floor on his highness’ own shoulders. Hopefully, we’ll soon see if Ty Lue’s “culture of accountability” starts having its desired effect.
Even though the wine & gold will miss the services of Matthew Dellavedova for a fourth consecutive game (he likely won’t play again until after the ASB), they will have Kevin Love back in uniform following a game off to recover from a thigh bruise. The Kings may be without Rudy Gay (ankle) and Ben McLemore (wrist).
Probable starting lineup for the Cavs includes: Kyrie Irving, J.R. Smith, LeBron James, Kevin Love and Tristan Thompson. And for the Kings: Rajon Rondo, Marco Belinelli, James Anderson, Willie Cauley-Stein and DeMarcus Cousins.
Game time is 7 p.m. (EST), and the action can be seen on FSO, or heard on WTAM 1100.
Prediction: The King and his court hold off the jesters of Sac-town 117-109… and Vivek Ranadive says “We are not amused” before offing Coach Karl’s head…
We should get to commenting…
We complain so much about the suboptimal play of Lebron. Imagine being a Kings fan with Cousins. It could drive Nate Smith crazy!
Got new, he’s already crazy
And Cols would be a very happy man between Rondo averaging 12 assists and Cousins 25 points and 10 boards on 40% shooting.
But think of the fun he would have with the Trade Machine, plugging in endless Boogie deals…
I don;t think there is anything fun about the Kings for the last 10 years. I could be wrong.
Arch and I came up with some good ones. Hopefully Griffin reads the CtB
I would spend every waking moment finding the best ripoff trade scenario to the Celtics.
I could not watch a team with Rajon Rondo.
Well he used to be very good. No denying his importance with those Boston teams.
JR Smith handing out assists
Now THAT’S a good way to end a quarter!
LBJ gets loose for one…
You can tell it’s going well when AC is just chuckling and yammering about Go Fish
LOL. Indeed.
Casspi has an awkward looking shot.
LeBron definitely didn’t look old on that slam!
he accelerated past everyone.
Lost some quickness, but not top-speed.
Does Kobe get a gift from the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame on his last trip to Cleveland on Wednesday?
I really like when KLove makes his moves right of the catch and he is good drawing fouls.
AV with the extra possession that leads to the three!
I can’t recall many line ups with both AV and Love.
Good to see AV back in.
ANYBODY STILL THINKING ON TRADING KY FOR MCCALLUM ?
Nomad you almost need to type it in all lower case, for effect. Then we’ll think you’re yelling. :)
Lol that is great.
LeBron on triple-double watch!
And K Love with 9K points.
Kyrie really tried to foul Gay that time… what game are refs watching?
LeBron hasn’t taken a 3 tonight. Maybe he listened to the podcast?
Think Conrad listened to the podcast?
Sounds like Nicole listened…
Kyrie abusing Rondo…
Kyrie on this defensive possession, where DeMarcus draw a foul on Lovve, was once again totally lost. Forced like 4 switches, just for not fighting through the screen.
I’d be okay if LBJ retired the jab-step fallaway though…
I think he shoots it at a 10% clip
Kings missing a ton of layups.
Omri doesn’t want to go back to Cleveland.
Good stat…
The effort on D is pretty lackadaisical so far. Maybe the Kings are contagious though.
Playing the Kings is an opportunity for Cleveland to get lots of positive reinforcement for playing in transition. — Kevin Pelton
Lebron looks so old
Based on what?
No he doesn’t. Really.
Yeah I don’t get this???
Like physically?
I like how decisive they look tonight.
Delly style smart foul from Mo
LBJ/Moz two man break is exciting to watch!
I like the push off! Use that forearm!
Man what a sequence
Bench giving Cavs a lot of minutes tonight…
Great ball movement leading to the shump putback. Also glad KY is taking advantage of sacremento’s allergy to getting back in transition.
HORNETS HAVE DOUBLED THE SCORE ON THE BULLS ( 42-21 )—–SHOULD BE INTERESTING TO SEE IF BULLS ARE BUYERS / SELLERS HERE AT TRADE DEADLINE
Can’t see the Bulls being sellers…I’m sure they think they have a decent shot at the finals.
And here we tought the Cavs were doomed. But then again maybe if the Bulls play against the Cavs all the time they will go 82-0 lol.
He always does…..
Exactly why I want the Celtics to trade the house for him.
Great hustle by Shump!
Well… at least Mo’s shot is going down, which is good since he’s not really looking to pass…
Moz having a tough time with Koufos…
Although he did a better job that time…
Bron with 7/5/5 in the first quarter… triple-double on horizon?
He wont play long enough. The Kings are a joke
Is TT like no longer a part of the offense?
Not when Delly is out…
Wait.. You mean you can run a pick n roll going downhill with 3 great shhoters spotting up, instead of snaking around every screen and trying to score?
Ok now just keep moving the ball even if the kings pick up their d.
Wait… they have a D?
Haha not so far. But do not think they will allow 3 more 30 point qtrs. then again I have not watched them this year, so maybe they are that bad.
They are pretty bad. They try to switch all the time, and they don’t have the guys for it.
Well… that’s a new horrible way to end a quarter…
Yeah, that is maybe one of the few times I am ok with him shooting a pullup 3.
We did get a 2 for 1 though. That’s got to count for something.
Lebron throws ball out of bounds, then yells at Mozzy
I love JR!!!!!!
JR SWISH AGAIN!
Casspi misses second bunny in a row… maybe it’s the building…
Kyrie nearly dribbles to nowhere… gets it to Shump for another and one…
Sacto is really a team that the Cavs can push the ball and run on… since they play almost zero defense…
Flagrant 2 if that were JR.
Air Cauley-Stein!!!!!
Yeah… he really went flying!
LBJ And One!
JR with the untucked 3
JR SWISH!!
Hey, that actually looked like it was planned!
Sacto commits a lot of fouls…
As usual JR getting hosed by the refs.
Cavs in the bonus with half a quarter to go.
Initiate attack sequence.
Glad KY looked for love in the the corner pick and pop but still think we need more movement on the weakside
Pace, LBJ you need to take off every time you get an outlet or bound.
Looked like a clean block by Gay on that.
TT with the REJECTION of Cauley-Stein!
Everybody touching the ball early…
Great cut from ky and pass from lbj
Just catching up. TBH, that looks almost like two teams going through a walk-through. But movement! Passing! I’ll take it.
Cavs hustling and moving early…
Like what I’m seeing from Bron and Kyrie.
LBJ with the CD Block and Kyrie for three…
Chinese New Year night…
Good evening CtB! Here are your numbers for tonight:
CLE is a 12 point favorite over SAC with an o/u @ 218. CLE is the slightest of smart money bets and the UNDER is a solid smart money bet.
I’ll tak CLE 115-102 over SAC. The numbers suggest SAC’s horrible defense will be no match for CLE’s offense. SAC does have a top 10 offense, but won’t be enough against CLE’s defense.
The Kings defense has been a sieve. The Cavs offense should look high octane tonight. Play the Rondo assist stat stuffing drinking game as you watch.
