Live Thread: Cavs vs. Wizards (#MiraclesCanHappen)
2016-03-04Nearly four decades ago, the relatively fledgling Cavaliers franchise shocked their fanbase, the city of Cleveland and the world at large by taking down Wes Unseld, Elvin Hayes and the Washington Bullets in seven unbelievable games… a series that has since been famously referred to as the “Miracle of Richfield.” Tonight, the current Cavs remember and pay homage to their basketball forebears (some of whom still roam the press box and sidelines of the Q) with a halftime celebration honoring the members of that 1975-76 squad.
Before and immediately following that presentation, the Cavs (42-17) will do their best to exact a measure of revenge against the now Washington Wizards for a beatdown administered a mere five days ago. Granted, that was a Bron-less loss, but the wound is still fresh… and the reverberations of what this team is (or isn’t) without their leader seem to have rippled through the team’s psyche this week. Questions about Kyrie’s happiness, Kevin’s usage, Ty Lue’s patience, and even LBJ’s off day itineraries have sprung up like so many leaks in the boat that’s navigating the treacherous waters of this season. Sometimes, you’d think it was a miracle they’ve been able to stay afloat…
But, the Cavs have 23 more games to get back to some smooth sailing into the post-season. Righting the ship against the improving, but still not yet playoff bound Wiz (30-30 and a half game behind the Pistons for the 8th seed in the East) would be another step forward. This time, they will be without the services of newly minted Banana Republic “style ambassador,” Kevin Love (scheduled rest/photo shoot?), yet it shouldn’t exactly take any divine intervention for the Cavs to emerge victorious on their home floor, where they are a stellar 25-5 on the season. True, Washington is one of the five teams to have beaten the Cavs at the Q this year, but that game also didn’t feature Kyrie Irving.
On a positive note, LeBron was named EC Player of the Month for February, the 30th time he’s been handed such an award in his career. In honor of this (okay… not really), he somehow talked Kendrick Lamar into releasing a whole new album of untitled tracks… using just a plaintive Tweet. Talk about your minor miracles…
Yo @dangerookipawaa after that @kendricklamar Grammy performance , you have to release those untitled tracks asap!!! What's up? Talk to me
— LeBron James (@KingJames) February 23, 2016
Probable starting lineup for the Cavs include: Kyrie Irving, J.R. Smith, Iman Shumpert (starting for Love), LeBron James (at the four) and Timofey Mozgov. For the Wizards: John Wall, Garrett Temple, Otto Porter, Jared Dudley and Marcin Gortat.
Game time is 8 p.m. EST (5 p.m. PST), and the action will be nationally televised on ESPN.
Prediction: Fueled by the memories of the past heroes of Richfield, the Cavs will conjure up a 112-98 victory over the team formerly known as the Bullets… no miracles required.
What if this is our starting five going forward? We could stop the penetration that has been killing us all year, set the tone early, and have Love come in with the second unit, so that he wont be exploited as easily on D, while being a high usage player on O.
It’s not a terrible idea, but I’m assuming Love would still want to be the starter. One of the three should be on the court at all times.
What a finish on the OOP!
Bron hits a three! Then KI!!
HOLY FLYING RUSSIAN!!!!
Markieff doing a good job on Bron…
JR with the bow after a one arm heave.
JR can hit mid-rangers too…
Any theories on why Kyrie can’t shoot the 3 this year?
Still getting his game back.
Saving them for the playoffs?
Lebron killing the momentum
That was an odd no-look pass to TT…
And then no rotation on D
Nobody covering Wall on the mid-rangers…
You got to give him that. Its not like he is Kyrie.
Delly is great at hitting the threes that cap something cool. Before the end of a quarter, after a cool sequence, etc. Ice in his veins! lol
Too bad RJ couldn’t convert to force the Wiz into a TO
RJ has looked old tonight
Not so much old as mistake prone…
Awesome ball movement ends in a Delly 3!!!!!!!!!
SHUMP! Best D I’ve seen from him in a while tonight…
Shumpman is an ideal role player. Stellar D and just sit and wait for the ball in the corner.
LOVE THE BALL MOVEMENT!!
That was probably the best possession Cavs have had all year
Stellar ball movement for the around the world Delly try.
IT’S “FRYE-DAY NIGHT ” WHERE IS CHANNING ——HOPE WE DIDN’T TRADE A 1ST ROUND PICK / ANDY FOR A BENCH WARMER
Guess they don’t want Frye with that…
AWESOME ball movement!!
Bill Fitch looking dapper.
Shump is a genius on half court D so far tonight. In the fast break, he, and probably 90% of NBA players need to watch tape of Danny Green of the Spurs or pull a Delly and foul them early.
After the TT steal, Kyrie didn’t enter the picture for the entire possession. Still ended in a bucket though
Lol… very true…
There was a Kyrie PnR with TT that he couldn’t finish
They started the first attempt and messed up. Kyrie actually pushed TT away from him and then hit him with the nifty pass, leading to TT missing a layup. Funny sequence considering the article on CtB the other day
He reads the blog, I knew it
Cavs dominating. This team is sweet.
Yeah Delly feeling it
It’s great to have you back EG. I’m down with getting Shump into game shape to guard the oppositions best defender for the playoffs.
Thanks man! Shump has looked pretty good defensively tonight so far…
Delly is the man
DELLY! Back to back!
These (NBA TV?) announcers are the worst. Its not a gossip show, its a basketball game! Not to mention that the points they were making, especially Barry, were very weak. Just try to make something out of nothing. CALL THE FREAKING GAME!
Barry is one of the worst announcers out there. I can’t stand listening to him.
MAN WE HAVE ” LEFT ALOT OF PTS ” ON THE FLOOR THIS QTR / COULD HAVE AT LEAST 10 MORE ON SCOREBOARD/ NEED TO CONVERT ——BUT ” NO PANIC BUTTON ” PLEASE
Yep… at least four just from RJ…
Well… that was a pretty awful way to end a quarter…
Exactly what David was talking about in the woodshop. Kyrie failing to properly use a screen.
I don’t blame Kyrie on that one at all
Getting so tired of these announcers. Talk about something other than LeBron’s tweet.
Sessions with the Harden-esque move to draw the foul…
Some really nice passing leads to a TT bucket…
Wow… how long are they going to freaking dissect this Tweet?
CNN has the OJ knife, ESPN has the LeBron tweet.
Glad to see Mozgov active early. LeBron looks quick. Love the LeBron defense!
That was a lot of uncalled fouls right there…
MAN IF WE CAN GET THIS TYPE OF ENERGY/ PLAY FROM THE MOZ EVERY NIGHT IT WOULD BE A HUGE PLUS
He’s looked great so far…
Don’t need you getting injured JR…
Kyrie going for the record on how many times he could get his shot blocked on one possession?
JR SWISH!
Notice how different the defense is when the opposite team is not involving both Kyrie and Love on the pick n roll? Too bad we cant hide Kyrie on a Garrett Temple every game.
Yea, Wall hasn’t gotten to the hoop once so far…
Wow, I don’t know that I’ve ever seen the same guy get 2 steals/breakaway dunks back to back within seconds like that before!!!
Vicious.
Punish that rim.
WOW… LBJ with the hangtime on that dunk!
If JR did that, they’d be looking at it for 5 minutes to see if it was flagrant.
Lots of action from Mozzy tonight so far…
That’s one way to make a Kyrie pick-and-roll work. Moz has a clear path to roll for the follow.
MOZ! with the follow
That Shump possession was close to the length of a vine
Moz with the confident turnaround in the lane.
Love them starting Shump. Great move.
Lot of missed shots early for both teams…
Jim Chones! That national anthem was pure Cleveland.
What’s up with the Los Cavs tonight? Is there a large hispanic population in Cleveland? I get Los Spurs or El Heat or Los Lakers, but Los Cavs seems strange… (this is not me being racist, I’m just genuinely curious)
Prediction: Easy win for the Cavs tonight…followed by stories about how Love isn’t needed.
Oops, not meant as a reply…
Probably because it’s on national TV, and LeBron is famous internationally.
Now ESPN is talking about “all the noise” about the Cavaliers this week.
Hmm, where did most of the noise come from?
Great clip of Chones!
I really want them to interview Joe Tait
Does Fred Hoiberg get fired if the Bulls miss the playoffs?
Nah, neither Dan Gilbert or Jimmy Haslem own the Bulls…
Yeah… Jerry Reinsdorf does… you know the guy who ran Thibs out of town despite making the playoffs every year…
To be fair, he gave him 5 years, not just 1. Plus there were other problems with Tibs and the front office, which was the main cause of the parting.
And he still would have gotten this year’s team to the playoffs and probably into the second round…
Agreed. Also, the Bulls have had some players improve this year who were poor last year.
Such as? Mirotic has bottomed out…
I could see the injury excuse with Noah and Jimmy out and Dunleavy missing time… but who has Hoiberg helped? They’re horrible on defense now…
Dougie McBuckets. Man. You’re argumentative tonight.
Lol… okay… that’s one…
Doug Collins just called the Celtics the “feel good team” of this year in the East…
In related news… I just threw up in my mouth a little…
I don’t think Boston or New York should ever qualify for a ‘feel good’ situation, but having said that, the Celts are a blue collar, get-the-most-out-of-your-talent team, with a great coach to boot.
How are they blue collar?
Well Olynyk will try to rip your collar off….
To me, players like Amir Johnson, Sullinger, Bradley, Crowder and the like are maybe short on talent, but long on hustle, and that = blue collar.
Okay… I can see that…
And maybe we should save the “great coach” label until the dude has actually won a playoff series?
You take a team whose best player is a 5’9″ point guard to the playoffs to years on a row? You’re a great coach. Why the hate?
“Great” is an overused superlative… I’m okay calling him a smart coach… but “great” coach doesn’t apply in my perspective yet…
Took freaking Butler to two straight final fours. He’s a great coach.
Whoop de doo, I mistakenly used the term ‘great’. Sorry to upset you.
You didn’t upset me… lol…
And the Butler thing just makes him a “great collegiate coach”… Heck, Billy Donovan won two freaking NCAA championships… but I don’t consider him a “great” NBA coach…
Way to move the goalposts, EG.
How is that moving the goalposts?
Jim Chones! National Anthem on bass guitar!? Let’s do this!!!!!
Here he is warming up earlier…
Hope the crowd is ready for him to channel some Jimi!
Well… BD can still get up!
Jalen seems annoyed that KLove is taking the night off…
I’m not sure why I watch NBA Countdown on ESPN… I must just be a glutton for punishment… ;)
In the Miracle clip, Snyder gets the inbounds pass, has a mismatch with a big on him, and DRIVES TO THE HOOP!
Is there a way to make LeBron watch that about 100 times?
Can anyone explain this? I’m puzzled as to why BD would do this…
He’s hoping he can show well and a team will pick him up for the playoffs. If he looks good, I’d take him.
Could you imagine?
I heard Shump is at the 3, is this true?
Yes, that is true…
I would rather have rested LeBron tonight and rested Love tomorrow. Mainly cause I care much more about beating the Celtics and I would challenge Kyrie and Love to redeem themselves after last weeks debacle.
Also, as we tend to refer to the team as the king’s men I think we need a name for the team when ever LeBron doesn’t play. I would put forward The Republicans as they are Kingless. Or, in the same vein but on a more pessimistic note, the Checkmates.
Here’s a theory that’s making the rounds…
Good evening CtB! Here are your numbers for tonight:
CLE is an 8 point favorite over WSH with an o/u @ 211. WSH is the slightest of smart money bets, along with the UNDER.
I’ll take CLE over WSH 108-102. Vegas is suggesting a close, high-scoring affair with CLE’s offense carrying the day. Shockingly, oddshark’s computer simulation is predicting a WSH victory(!) which I find hard to believe given WSH’s utter mediocrity on offense and defense.
WOW GAVE ME GOOSEBUMPS WATCHING THOSE HIGHTLIGHTS ——-MOMENTS IN YOUR LIFE WHERE YOU RECALL EXACTLY WHERE YOU WERE / WHO YOU WERE WITH / AND WHAT YOU WERE DOING ————WOULD BE NICE TO HAVE A SIMILAR CELEBRATION COME THIS JUNE ——” GOTTA BELIEVE IN THE LAND “———WOULD LIKE TO SEE US GET ON THAT POSITIVE HIGH / MOMENTUM LIKE LAST YEAR WHEN WE WERE ALL EXCITED AND ” BLOGGING FIST PUMPS —HIGH 5″S ” —–GO CAVS !!!
Well, I was about to finish 1st grade, got to see a replica of the Liberty Bell visit my school as part of the bicentennial celebration, cars and houses were still coated by soot from the rubber factories in Akron, and I would watch the Star Channel (which became The Movie Channel) on cable, which would show 1 movie a day, repeated every 3-4 hours or so. Oh and I had NO idea what pro sports were, let alone a Cavalier…
Easy win for the best team in the east.
