Live Thread: Cavs @ Hawks, Game 3 (#ChuckTheChuckersChuck?)
2016-05-06[Make sure you check out David’s awesome Wood Shop piece on five man lineups!]
After the Cavaliers rained down historic long-range fire on the heads of the hapless Hawks in Game 2, I was looking forward to Charles Barkley’s post-game eulogy of Atlanta rife with fishing metaphors and veiled shots at their collective manhood. Instead, Chuck went in a bit of a different direction, calling out the Hawks for not “taking someone out” once it was clear the Cavs were just record-hunting in the final quarter by chucking up 11 more threes.
While the wine & gold bench may have been guilty of overzealously trying to set the all-time mark for three pointers in a game, was it really all that disrespectful to a Hawks team that had given up the bulk of the record (22 before the Cavs’ starters all checked out with about four minutes to go in the third) well before garbage time? And, even if it was offensive to them on some level, would it actually warrant causing intentional harm to a Cav to send a message? Clearly, Chuck thought so (Shaq tried to mitigate his comment by asking “you mean touch them up, right?” but Chuck stuck to his guns).
So, thanks in part to Barkley’s soundbite, the conversation immediately following the game seemed to focus less on what the Cavs had achieved historically in their beatdown of Atlanta, and more on whether or not the Hawks would decide to man up and get some physical retribution for this apparent slight. Reporters asked about it. Media talking heads dissected it. Even one old Chuck adversary called him out over it…
Charles Barkley ,you better stop talking s*** about Cleveland you was never tough you hide behind TNT

And of course, the obligatory Chuck response…
https://streamable.com/ulfr?t=38.4
There’s certainly no love lost between the two Charleses, who in addition to sharing a first name, also shared a position, the number 34 and some memorable physical moments on the floor against each other. This one happened in a pre-season game…
So, why spend so much time on this Chuck-foolery? Mainly because there’s not a lot else to talk about or watch for in the (as Ernie Johnson hilariously put it) “if necessary” Game 3. The truth is, unless the Hawks actually decide to get physical and start intentionally trying to hurt the Cavs, they have very little else at their disposal to stop Cleveland’s continued rampage. Sure, the Cavs might (probably will) cool off a bit from their blistering 56% shooting from downtown, and the Hawks may even alter their focus to take the open shots away. However, it would likely be at the expense of packing the paint, which would leave them vulnerable to Cleveland’s ability to attack the rack with abandon.
For his part, Ty Lue doesn’t believe what his guys did was wrong, and he certainly hopes the officials will prevent any sort of impending Chuck-pocalypse…
“I don’t think there’s any place in our game to take someone out if they’re playing well,” Lue said during a conference call with reporters on Thursday. “I think you can take it upon yourself to play harder and do things to stop it or stop a team from playing well. But when it gets into trying to hurt guys or trying to take guys out, that’s just not right. Hopefully the referees will keep an eye on it and make sure it’s a clean game. We don’t mind if it’s a physical game, but clean and everything that they do and we do is basketball related. I don’t believe in taking guys out and trying to hurt guys because a team or a player is playing well.”
LeBron took a more circumspect view on “Chuck being Chuck…”

Will Atlanta find their inner tough guy… or at least the fake tough guy routine that Al Horford employed in last year’s playoff series when he tried to take out Delly with an atomic elbow? Or will they choose to focus their efforts on trying to at least make the Cavs adjust their game plan and work a bit harder for their points on the road? If they already believe that it’s “Mission: Impossible” like Paul Millsap indicated, it wouldn’t be surprising to see some frustration boil over into aggression.
A likely target could be J.R. Smith who has not only dazzled with his insane array of contested pipe bomb threes, but has also locked down Kyle Korver (allowing only eight shot attempts in the two games with only three makes). As history has shown, J.R. can be susceptible to rankling and retaliation, so the Hawks may try to get under his skin and provoke him to do something stupid.
Odds are that the Cavs will be able to handle whatever the Hawks throw at them, although this should shape up to be the most challenging game of the series to capture. Prediction: The Hawks don’t go down without a fight, and keep this one close to the bitter end. Cavs prevail 102-99.

Embarrassingly easy for LeBron
https://vine.co/v/iQqBgBOFpT2
We’re shooting almost as well as last game. Defending…not so much.
What did Jefferson do to deserve a foul there? Get knocked around by two guys?
It’s cool to see Hardaway’s kid in the league. I wonder if his dad taught him dat UTEP two step crozzover move
that’s an over the back on the Hawks’ player. Jefferson didn’t even know he was there. Bad call
Horrible call… RJ gets a foul because Hardaway goes over his back and falls down… smh…
Do not underestimate the power of Tony Brothers and his crooked crews.
Barkley told the Hawks to injure the Cavs. Instead they are injuring themselves. Is this the human manifestation of lemmings?
How ATL flopping so for Calls
Frye from downtown!

Delly Trey Revenge!
Delly makes his first look
https://vine.co/v/iQAluWaZAlX
Delly went under that screen on the Umlaut and he hit one…
we’re playing down to the junk pace
TT one vs. four on the O-boards comes away with two rebounds in a row.
TT YOU ARE AN ANIMAL
Flypaper Kyrie that time, but Milsap couldn’t convert.
Tony Brothers officiating tonight? I sense a disturbance in the Force.
It would be better to for them to go hack-a-JR to mess with his shooting stroke.
I’m glad it wasn’t Delly trying to take that charge on Thabo.
Sucks the Cavs couldn’t cash in on that 5 on 4 with Thabo down…
KI needs to get engaged in this game. Maybe some early adult time
Early “Delly” time
Glad you updated, Mike. Thought you might be recommending a conjugal visit in the locker room for Kyrie.
i guess “touching them up” backfired
Way to go out on a limb Hubie. No ones ever made the connection between Love and Wes Unseld.
LOL… well, at least Hubie probably saw a lot of Wes…
I’m not sure hack-a-TT is going to go the way they plan
TT going one on one
https://vine.co/v/iQAE0u13lhe
Really? Hack a Tristan? White towel anyone? For Lebron’s sake, he is a 62% free throw shooter, not Drummond.
Make em pay TT… go Tim Misny on them!
HAHA. Atlanta forced to Hack-a-tristan. I hope they get a clear path. That would be hilarious.
HAHA. Hubie just called him Blazemore.
JR SWISH!!
On his first look of the night…

after being down 3-8, we are on a 12-5 run. Love could get a double double in the first quarter, done have 6 rebounds
Wow! Love is tearing them apart! Best player on the court and we need that since Lebron seems a little off and Kyrie is MIA.
Love looking like LMA vs OKC. Milsap is soft
Wow, Love comes out hot. Feels like the guys draw straws for first-quarter offense sometimes. I’m fine with that.
Kevin is everywhere. He’s gonna have a monster game. That’s who they’re cheating off.
With the assist:
https://vine.co/v/iQA0MwmbXdK
KLOVE EN FUEGO! All 13 points!
https://vine.co/v/iQA2YLXt26J
Wow. What a garbage call that was. Cavs should have helped Kevin earlier.
Love dominating so far , scoring and rebounding, 9 PTs, 5 RBS
KLove ballin early!
Love with all our points so far
Picks up TT after his misses
https://vine.co/v/iQAQtnpWATK
The Atlanta crowd is dead. You would think they would be pumped
Most haven’t even arrived yet…
Love potion No. 2:
https://vine.co/v/iQAQz2DlETx
TT drawing fouls inside… Two on Horford already
Looks like Cavs looking to change things up by going inside to TT. OK results so far.
There you go, Kyrie.
TT up to his old tricks…
That last turnover was on Kyrie. Have to deliver the ball much sooner when the double team comes.
Bench is going to have to step up tonight, I think.
Not intense enough defense out of the gate. I imagine we will ratchet it up.
Why is Tristan jealous of Horford handling the ball? But man are the Hawks desperate. It s not gonna last though.
Love hits a 3 on the Cavs’ first possession, but the Hawks open 4 for 4. Timeout Lue.
Lot of layups for the Hawks to start… They definitely seem to be pushing the pace early…
KLove knocks it down!
https://vine.co/v/iQAPW1JaAQL
So, this will be a good test of whether the Cavs can handle success…
Good point…
Weird…

Rational?
JR is 19 for 39 on contested threes in the playoffs, per Windy — just under 50%. He’s 9 for 14 on open threes.
Phil, you got the Vines tonight?
Sure
Just didn’t want to double up…
https://twitter.com/ChrisBHaynes/status/728720345704873988
Gonna need Shump to help handle Korver off the bench tonight…
Korver tryna hide from the pipe?
Cavs don’t need to be hitting like crazy from three, as long as they bring the D they had last game…
Looking forward to the game! Let’s go Cavs!
Strategy: Do you (a) come out and bomb from three to see if you’re still hot? (b) come out and work inside on the assumption the Hawks will have adjusted their arc defense? or (c) run your regular offense until it stops work.
I think Lue will tell them c, the players won’t be able to resist a, but I personally want them to go b.
A pipe bomb. I like it. That’s what all JR 3’s should be called from here on out.
