Live Thread: Cavs @ Hawks (or, Drama King Theater)
2017-04-09After one of the most embarrassing defeats of recent memory, a Cavalier loss to a Hawks team resting five starters, Cleveland looks for revenge. What better way to right the ship (yet again) than against that same Hawks team, not resting five starters. I haven’t gotten the full injury report yet, but it appears that Schroeder, Howard, Bazemore, and Millsap will be back while Sefolosha remains on the DL. For Cleveland, given that he left the game with knee pain Friday, I expect Kyrie Irving to sit. Tristan Thompson will probably continue to rest his thumb as well.
There’s not much more to say about what needs to happen other than that Cleveland needs to avoid the “Tortoise and Hare” analogy that Cory Hughey so aptly applied to Friday’s debacle. Most of us can agree, this Cleveland team is maddening. It’s hard to watch and root for a team that so consistently sabotages itself with atrocious decision making, wildly inconsistent effort, and a consistent “failure to launch.”
We’ve all been around these kinds of people: Drama Kings. We forget that the Cavs have more than their fair share of divas that make drama if there is none already existing. Look at the roster. We all know about J.R.’s trials in New York, his literal trials in Denver, and his um, “flair for the dramatic” throughout last season’s victory celebrations. Flat Earth Kyrie has had his own issues: pouting after a CtB interview with Brian Windhorst, baby mama drama, and more than one “talking to” by the King. Kevin Love? He whined his way out of Minny. Shump? DUI and inexplicable penchant for dribbling turnovers. Deron Williams forced a trade from Utah, sunsetted Jerry Sloan’s career, stunk up the join in Brooklyn, and was kicked out of an all-you-can-eat buffet in Dallas for trying to stay a whole day. (OK, I made that last one up). Tristan Thompson has his own baby issues, and fair or not, could not have picked a more high profile girlfriend in Khloe Kardashian.
Add in Larry “I’m gonna retire for two plus years to smoke pot” Sanders, domestic violence Liggins, and seasonal passive aggressive disorder suffering Mr. Decision, himself: LeBron – subtweeting -can’t settle on a freaking sane free throw stroke – just decides not to play defense sometimes – James. Oh, and don’t forget the owner, Comic Sans Dan. It’s a wonder this team doesn’t have more drama. Sure, all these moments represent guys at their worst, and lord knows I wouldn’t want anyone going through my past with a fine tooth comb, but it seems like David Griffn has an aversion to guys who just put their heads down and get the job done and then go home at night. How did Cleveland get so many of these divas on the same team? I’m sure that David Blatt felt like a babysitter more than once, and that LeBron’s top assistant Tyronn Lue does too.
And I’m the last one who should be calling anyone out for any of this. Anyone who knows me knows that I suffer from emotional oscillations, seasonal malaise, and a tendency to create obstacles for myself. For some, it’s human nature. I struggle with putting it all together on a daily basis. I wish I knew how to be more… consistent. Maybe it’s just who we are as a species. I mean, look at the history of humanity. It’s a wonder we made it out of the cold war alive. And have you “read the news today? Oh boy.” Maybe – definitely – this Cavs team reflects the world around them.
But the world keeps on spinning. Somehow I figure it out, somehow we figure it out. We haven’t blown ourselves up yet. Why? Eventually, to be successful, one has to stop being a drama king and just do their freaking job, at least in sustainable bursts. Just be boringly effective. It seems so damned hard for these guys. Maybe it’s too much to ask. So maybe, just don’t play like a-holes. That’s all I ask. Let’s hope it starts this afternoon for Cleveland…
Well that was cathartic. Go Cavs.
Update:
The Cavs have waived DeAndre Liggins. Kyrie Irving will play, as will Paul Millsap. Rumors are the Cavs may be interested in Anderson Varejao, and, of course, Dahntay Jones’ and Ray Allen’s names have also come up as possible replacements for Liggins’ roster spot.
D.Liggins starting 19 games for CLE this season and then being cut 3 games before the playoffs says a lot about how crazy this year's been
— Dave McMenamin (@mcten) April 9, 2017
Its odd, Lue did a masterful job last year. This year? Its like he’s Mike Brown without the defensive ability. He hasn’t held anyone accountable. If LBJ is going to coach, why pay a head coach? Guys who get minutes despite clearly sucking? Shumpert, Ron Williams. Guys who got run and showed they could help us? Rick Williams (nailed to the bench), Liggins (cut). WTF? Seriously. Can anyone explain it to me? What am I missing here?
We don’t get it either. No way Popovich , Spoelstra , Kerr rewards playing time to poor performance.
LeBron gets an IT phantom call!
Thanks ref
Phantom call right back lol
LeBron stared at that rebound.
He does have 16
If only we had a quick, defensive guy who rarely does anything stupid. Wait, we cut him.
Should try Love down low
Kyrie’s second ever miss in ot
Mamba mentality.
How much you want to bet that, win or lose, Lue plays everyone tomorrow. I think he is trying to injure Lebron. There is no other explanation.
Agreed.
Well that fourth quarter was utter crap. It is quite funny though hearing these commentators talking as if the Hawks “have our number”. We’ve been doing this every game we’ve led post all star game.
Plus, don’t they remember the playoffs the past two years?
Yeah, Hawks having our number is kind of a joke. Cavs sucking the last two months? Clearly. But Hawks are no threat to any contender.
LeBron at 44 minutes going into overtime. Irving at 40 recovering from tendinitis.
The Cavs can’t handle the speed of the Hawks second unit.
Out of shape players! They don’t practice anymore.
Can we get David Blatt back? Lue has destroyed any semblance of usable rotation.
I don’t know that I’ve ever seen that before. Getting outscored 44-18 in the fourth to go to OT. That is a new level of catastrophe. Luckily, we got rid of Liggins, because our defense is exceptional. We just need some more wings that can’t defend and we’ll be set
OT. We suck. We deserve to loose.
Well, I think we’ve sucked about every way possible this game… good grief…
Yank LeBron. He sucks on FTs & fouled a 3 pt shootet & screwed up an inbounds. Another poor inbounds.
He didn’t foul the shooter and that’s the most ridiculous 5 second call in the history of the NBA. He also didn’t foul Hardaway in the play before.
Have to disagree with you on the first two points. The Hardaway call was crap, but other than that.
He didn’t even jump and barely touched Hardaway on the three, that’s not called very often
Lol
This is effing pathetic.
This is insane.
Cavs doing everything wrong in late game situations
Kevin Love has been poopy faced today, more drama? LeBron sucks the year in games where he starts the fourth with a huge lead. Why not keep his normal rest and bring him in only if he’s needed, fresh, not a zombie.
Agreed. It is the biggest issue I have with Lue. He seems to not trust anyone other than LeBron whatsoever.
Cleveland versus the world now. These refs…
We consistently suck at inbounds plays late game.
I think I’m actually cheering on the hawks now.
That was a quick 5 but Cavs finding new ways to suck.
This is laughable. Maybe they have multiple personality disorders
There is no reason to continue playing Shumpert over Liggins. None.
Other than the fact they cut Liggins.
I wonder if that’s why the did it. Try to show confidence in Shumpert by cutting his competition? I don’t know. I’ve never hated my own team as much as I’ve hated this team the past three years. Bizarre to say the least.
I thought the same thing.
Except that Liggins isn’t on the team anymore.
Iso crap offense.
Wow. Cavs should lose this game. Lucky they probably won’t. Probably
This team is so fragile. Whew!
Shumpster fire.
Cripes. Cavs will probably pull thisout but yet again exhaustion and bad habits rearing their head in the fourth.
Damn Kinggggg!!!!
Keys to beating the Cavs, rest all starters. Play only bench players and they will beat themselves.
Lol exactly
Good grief, Deron, stop Shumping it up.
“Some of the good ball movement and player movement we saw the other night” Hawks announcers. Um, Earth to Hawks, some of the sleepwalking defense you saw from the Cavs the other night. They checked out mid way through the second quarter.
And here comes the Hawks bench….
Shump is awful
I’m really looking forward here but should the Cavs rest the big 3 tomorrow?
Have we actually scored a mid ranger today. Seems like we are playing the perfect analytics game.
On the positive side, the Raptors have clinched at least 3rd. If the Celtics beat Brooklyn at home, Raps are locked at 3. That last game will mean nothing for them. If we play well in the third, the starters can rest the 4th & play tomorrow.
So much for that plan.
I’m glad Irving is playing. I was worried he was injured.
Wow. Stunned they waived Liggins. He played well and is a ready made Shump replacement for next year & was cheap. Maybe TTs thumb is more worrisome & we need another big.
Doesn’t mean he can’t be back next year, but I don’t think GM LeBron likes him.
Just checking in on the game. Ok, man, I don’t get this team at all. KI with hurt knee, players need rest, and instead of just cooling their jets and resting, they come out guns blazing. I think this team should be renamed the Cleveland Costanzas because they just do the opposite of what they should. And of course it’s working.
Celtics Benson gets my vote.
It’s good to see Frye competing down low.
Reverse Kraken! James to Irving.
Howard 17 points midway through the second quarter. I vote for a hypothetical playable big as Liggins’s replacement. Not sure who’s out there.
Irving a one-footer over a big man

Will, dunk you very much, LeBron.
Well let’s hope they can sustain.
Let’s keep this up. Keep the energy up.

That Liggins move had LeBron James, GM written all over it.
Dahntay or Varejao?

Ilyasova was a great pickup for Atlanta. Love to see him in a Cavs uni.
I agree.
Is there a legit backup big available? (Someone more useful than Sanders or Varejao.) That’s the only reason I’d cut Liggins.
Ray Allen. Maybe.
He retired.
I’ll bet you cash money that Liggins led the league in steals on the inbound after a made basket.
Wondering when the three well is gonna run dry.
I just hope the defensive intensity stays high when that happens.
The Hawks should keep throwing it in to Howard.
Hardaway Junior has made himself a LOT of money this season.
Great intro, Nate. Maybe Liggins wasn’t productive enough in the drama department.
Thanks, man.
Nice start from the Cavs, the question now is will they keep the energy up?
Can only hope for the best for Liggins on his future.
About today’s game, with all the drama created with the awful L they got last game all they need to do is return the favor to their starters today and it would clear the air a bit.
Go Cavs!
I think it’s official. Cols is secretly a Cavs front office guy.
In my world results matter.
Uh, ok.
Lol, who knows maybe the Cavs will bring Chalmers in now lol.
Why on Earth would we waive liggins at this stage in the game? I just don’t know what to think right now.
This organisation is insane.
Insanely great. On the verge of three finals appearances in a row. Not too many teams have ever done that.
Sure, bud.
D. Liggs… gone
I saw that. What’s point?
