Playoff Live Thread: Cavs vs. Pacers, Game 1 (#WhoAreYou?)
2017-04-15https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=PdLIerfXuZ4
After 82 games and five roller coaster months, we’re not much closer to knowing just who the Cleveland Cavaliers are. Injuries, inconsistency, roster moves and general malaise have all complicated the identity of the defending NBA Champions.
Are they the team that went 25-7 before the end of 2016… or the team that went 26-24 in 2017?
Are they the team that rallied from 14 down to beat Golden State on Christmas Day, despite losing J.R. Smith to a broken thumb… or the team that got blown out those same Warriors by 35 a month later in the MLK Massacre Redux?
Are they the team that blitzed their opponents, averaging almost 120 points a game while going 8-2 in February… or the team that was almost dead last in allowing points through a rusted sieve of a defense while suffering through a brutal 10-14 stretch after the beginning of March?
Are they the team who easily man-handled the Celtics in Boston 10 days ago to take control of the top seed in the East… or the team that got embarrassed at home by the Hawks’ bench before suffering a historic 26 point collapse to their starters two nights later?
Are they the team that wanted that top seed so bad they rode LeBron James to the most average minutes per game of anyone in the NBA this season… or the team that didn’t really care about seeding as long as they got to the playoffs healthy?
Just who are you, Cavs? I really wanna know…
Well, we’re about to find out. The Cavs kick off the season that purportedly actually means something to them starting today against the Indiana Pacers. You don’t have to remember too far back to recall how potent the Pacers can be… as they took the Cavs to double overtime in a 135-130 thriller just two weeks ago. In that game, Paul George and LeBron James put on a classic duel, both scoring 40+ with LBJ notching a triple double and PG-13 coming up just short. And, like today, that game was at the Q. The Pacers are a much better team at home this year (29-12) than they were on the road (13-28), so the Cavs should look to jump out to an early series lead before things get tougher in Indy where they’ve struggled in recent history.
For the Cavs, the numbers speak for themselves. They are 13-1 at home in the playoffs against the Eastern Conference since 2015. They swept both first round opponents (Boston and Detroit) the last two seasons since LeBron returned. The Pacers present a bit more of a challenge since they do boast a superstar on their roster in PG-13. Yet, the Cavs have the ultimate playoff trump card in the man who has been to six straight NBA Finals. Today’s game will be LeBron’s 200th playoff tilt of his career. As far as playoff milestones go, he needs just 69 points to pass Kobe Bryant for 3rd in playoff scoring, eight rebounds to pass Robert Parish for 8th in boards, five steals to pass Magic Johnson for 3rd and 11 made field goals to pass Tim Duncan for 5th.
Will you know who carry the Cavs to another championship? We’ll be closer to that answer in a few hours…
Cavs probable starting lineup:Â Kevin Love, LeBron James, J.R. Smith, Tristan Thompson, Kyrie Irving.
Pacers probable starting lineup: Paul George, Jeff Teague, Myles Turner, Thaddeus Young, Monta Ellis.
Prediction: The Cavs show the Pacers who’s boss and show us all who they want to be with a convincing 117-104 victory.
Catch all of the playoff action starting at 3pm EST on ABC.
Indy can’t stop LBJ from getting to the rack without Miles Turner…
Kev back quickly…
We need his defense
That was quickly? He played like 6 mins in q1
More quickly than usual…
Deron just made two straight great offensive plays…and two straight times ruined the defensive rotations.

CFRYE!!
Happy birthday Lance…
No Shump with the James Gang. Frye, RJ, Korver, Deron.
No reason to double PG-13 there and leave CJ wide open…
Jumbo with the wrong DWill in there…
Lue would…such a dumb way to use Deron…
Yep. He is on the court with Kyrie and/or James at all times.
Still no Shump…
Will we see the Jumbo Lineup??
Tristan played the whole quarter, Tavares comin in?
Shump in 3, 2, 1 ….
Pretty inexcusable from Young there. Kyrie dazzling as usual and no Shump yet!!!! Here’s hoping Lue has realised his worth.

Good defensive presence and use of foul at the end of the quarter… solid start for Cavs… a few too many layups allowed off the pick and roll, but offense is clicking
There’s only one thing that wins championships…and it seems not offense…
Kyrie straight ballin out
Kyrie playing super well since some early chucking
Thad Young – not know for his clock awareness.
We held them under 30.
I love that left handed layup that Kyrie does…

Buddy ball!
The high handoff!!
We definitely have a chance right now to blow the game open with a couple more consecutive stops. Really like how fast we’re pushing the ball after misses
Didn’t RJ used to be good at FTs?
Career 76.8%, but he’s varied from low 70% to around 80% in various seasons…
RJ making plays
D-Will (Deron) is sub #3.
DWill sub #3…

I noticed that. Hopefully he’s straight on at his release. He was ogf center before. Lot of missrs right & left. That should never happen.
It’s almost like he conserved all of his energy for the end of the quarter…
Lance Romance lmao
RJ sub #1. Korver sub #2.
LBJ on the move!

Goaltend? Really?
I hold my breath when CJ miles shoots the ball…

Pacers are keying a lot on LBJ… he’s finding his guys though…
Who said Richard Jefferson would be the surprise x factor?
Wasn’t it you who said you’d rather see RJ than Shump, because at least he knows his role? Agree.
Nice shot by RJ!
Richard Jefferson right on cue
Better D that time…
Wow… that was a bad FT miss…
JR drawing the questionable foul from George… happy to take it though
LBJ doesn’t seem engaged yet… as that travel would indicate…
That Ky to TT pass…

When are we going to deploy our secret defense?
Too top secret to ever deploy…we probably shouldn’t even be mentioning it…
When the team gets 3 years younger and learns to move laterally
When we are down 3-1
Good point Fred…

81% as a TEAM?! Good lord we’d score 140 points a night with that percentage
Still feels like the Cavs think this game doesn’t matter. Hoping that’s me projecting the hangover from the season’s end
Good O (save for quick shots from Irving). Poor D. Keep feeding Love against Young.
Waiting for LeBron to do something. Kyrie sure does love chucking it up there. Love the lone bright spot.
Lazy pass and PG-13 gets an easy three…
Wow… Love never touched Teague…
https://twitter.com/JoeNogaCLE/status/853326269806764032
Keep feeding Kev!
Too many layups for Indy…
Nice recovery and great pass to TT
Beautiful move by Kyrie!
Good to see Cavs pushing pace, but they’re still having trouble with pick and roll D…
Lue likely saving his ‘secret’ schemes for the Finals…
3 layups gor Indy
Kevin is the offense right now…
KLOVE!
Rebounding an issue already…
Going to Love early…

What kind of businessman says the majority of his product is irrelevant?!
Here we go.
Oh good…

Do people know who made the 13 man roster? Was guessing Felder was dropped but who else? Champ?
Champ is in uniform… so I don’t know
I’d guess Tavares
Dig the Defend The Land shirts…
They seem loose…
https://twitter.com/cavs/status/853318278219005952
Here’s hoping J.R. isn’t hungover…
