***BREAKING NEWS*** David Griffin OUT
2017-06-19The Cavs and general manager David Griffin will part ways according to sources
— Brian Windhorst (@WindhorstESPN) June 19, 2017
That about says it all, right? It appears that, after three years with the franchise, David Griffin and the Cleveland Cavaliers have mutually agreed to part ways. In addition, Trent Redden, the team’s senior vice president of basketball operations, is on his way out.
Reports have pegged Chauncey Billups a potential replacement:
Sources: Cleveland owner Dan Gilbert is targeting Chauncey Billups to become Cavs' top basketball executive. Sides expected to talk soon.
— Adrian Wojnarowski (@wojespn) June 20, 2017
It sounds as though Griffin may not have seen eye to eye with Gilbert on offseason moves, particularly the status of Kevin Love:
Per source familiar w/ breakdown, Griffin removed himself from consideration when it became clear his vision for CLE didn't match Gilbert's
— Dave McMenamin (@mcten) June 19, 2017
This begs the question — after reports of trade talks between Cleveland and Chicago and Cleveland and Indiana for Butler and PG13, respectively, who the heck is negotiating on behalf of the Cavs?!
And of course, the players don’t seem to be in the loop:
Just reached out to a Cavs player for a response about the David Griffin departure. His response: "Griff is leaving?"
— Dave McMenamin (@mcten) June 19, 2017
What does this mean for the Cavs? Who would you like to seen brought in? What’s next for a tumultuous Cavalier offseason?!
If there’s one person that can put Lebron and Dan in the same page it’s David Griffin. It was.
I thought that Griffin was the middle man to say no to Lebron when Dan wants to say no, and at the same time convince Lebron to do things that would work both ways.
.
I know it’s hard for Dan to take the hit of the tax, but Griff has created room to make moves that other organizations can’t if they’re placed in the same cap situation.
Yeah the dude is great with people. You could see it with every interview. If I’m the Knicks I dump Phil now.
The Knicks have Dolan. No GM in the league can be successful with that guy.
I know. I mean if I’m the Knicks I ditch my crappy jazz band for a garage rock quartet, then I hire Griff.
Oh absolutely
I could see Griffin going back to Phoenix at some point. Wish him the best.
Even after a great tribe win, everything I am hearing about the Griff ouster has officially ruined my night. The absolute best case scenario, which is still pretty bad is that Gilbert didn’t want to shell out the money for a larger contract for Griff. The worst case scenario is that an owner, who consistently sounds like he knows nothing about sports, let alone bball, is trying to make major bball decisions. Sounds like the Browns. That would spell a death knell for this team’s chances of staying relevant.
6:00 Griff was on the phone gauging interest from Butler. 7:30 he was out. Not only was he out, so was most of his staff. WTF?
Well sounds like our hobbit owner who always sounds like he doesn’t know a touchdown from a three pointer thinks he knows better than Griff. Gilbert is a moron. With his impulsive and reactionary management style, it baffles me that quicken loans was successful.
What was the first domino that made everything fall for a Lebron James Championship???
Pat Riley said NO to Lebron.
The next guy to be able to do that is David Griffin.
With the incoming money from the TV deal. Having 2 of the top 5 marketable stars in the league for the next 5 years, being relevant and competitive the next 5 years.. all that profit coming in for the next 3-4 years.. and Dan Gilbert can’t take a hit of maybe 5 million more to keep his GM.
You can’t make this stuff up
THE ONLY GM TO GIVE CLEVELAND SPORTS A CHAMPIONSHIP.
https://twitter.com/BenAxelrod/status/876946348867809284
This was goal number 1 this offseason. RE-SIGN Griff. We failed.
Not a good start.
https://twitter.com/chasshill/status/876968104785580032
That’s brilliant!
It’s really depressing to see Griff go. THE ONLY GUY TO..
1. Build a championship team with Lebron in Cleveland.
2. Withstand everything in this circus since Lebron arrived.
3. Say NO to Lebron when it’s needed.
4. Continuously stockpile mini-assets despite being capped-out.
https://youtu.be/8KUZro9rwVg
There is one thing that keeps Gilbert from being a terrible and incompetent owner. That is or perhaps…was his willingness to spend. Otherwise you are looking at a guy who is one of the least knowledgeable of NBA owners in terms of bball knowledge and one of the most reactionary and impulsive management styles. As far as evidence for his bball knowledge, just listen to one of his interviews regarding actual bball (they are rare) and look at his hiring history with the exception of griff. Mike Brown 1 and 2, Byron Scott, Chris Grant, etc. Let us hope he… Read more »
If he’s cheaping out, LeBron is gone by next summer. He may be gone anyway, but that would guarantee it. Because the one thing he asked Gilbert for was a promise that he would spend.
https://twitter.com/oldseaminer/status/877009553317142528
Depending on what happens next year, we may look back at the cavs lone championship as them winning in spite of Gilbert. Spending helps, but most owners would spend a ton for a few years if LBJ comes to your team.
Waiving Liggins to get Dahntay again was pretty stupid. Though that was likely James. Not locking Delly up after 2015 was also poor. Other than that….pretty friggin’ stellar. Reports are that it is bball stuff that caused the split. If we are going in Gilbert’s direction, I fear a rocky road ahead.
Whoever takes over for the Cavs will have a lot of pressure without many assets. Not a good seat to be in. Unless Gilbert puts in someone that can somehow make the right moves to get this team to beat the Warriors next year in the finals, then the perception will continue to grow that Dan Gilbert Is an incompetent owner. Fair or not, that is how it will look IMO.
I mean he will be an incompetent owner. His track record other than Griff is absolutely abysmal from a management and hiring standpoint.
I give Gilbert credit for spending $, and having the balls to fly down and pitch LeBron to come home.
People are who they are.
Who is with Dan Gilbert to make negotiations with Lebron.
Yep..
Ya. Griff was likely a huge buffer btwn Gilbert and LBJ
And when Lebron said this & that, I HIGHLY BELIEVED that Griffin was the one to say NO.
If in those negotiations Dan said NO to Lebron face to face, he wouldn’t be back here in 2014.
Yeah, no doubt.
My goal was to take a few weeks off after the season and get some R&R… thanks @CavsDan…
Have to think Gilbert is satisfied with contending for the last few years and has had quite enough of the limitless spending. Things soured in Miami when Mickey Arison pulled the purse strings tighter during 2014. For those who think LBJ is going, pray tell where exactly? The easiest path to the finals is on the cavs. San Antonio? I mean he is here for at least another year.
Ill miss Griff – say what you will about the moves he made, he was very clearly an incredibly thoughtful and interesting human being. His interviews and pressers were worlds apart from most NBA content. He treated the fans like adults worthy of more than just stereotypical sound bytes and ran the team to the best of his ability. Even his departure is on his terms, standing up for what he thinks is right. So long Griff, we barely knew ye.
Well said.
I 2nd that.
Uh oh. Shots fired.
https://twitter.com/KingJames/status/877006123357929472
Damn..
Wow…. CavsDan f*****d up.
There is zero percent chance that Gilbert is a smarter basketball guy than Griffin. Zero. And there is even less of a chance that he , or Billups, are better at knowing the CBA and structuring contracts/trades. This is about a little rich kid not being able to have someone smarter than him in the room.
I think it is more Gilbert not wanting to shell out cash to griff and maybe pulling back the spending on buyouts next year.
This. This. This.
Yes!!
https://twitter.com/daldridgetnt/status/877000668384563201
I believe this. Lebron was very high on San Antonio’s of the world. And as much as he won’t admit, Pat Riley and the Heat helped him to be mature.
I’m glad they let Griff go. He let Delly and Liggins leave, brought in Korver and Deron who choked, and killed our future prospects. I don’t even think we have a first round pick for another 2-3 years and half the team is getting paid and ready to retire? It’s hindsight is 20/20.
Impossible to say what moves were Griff, what were LeBron, and what were Gilbert.
Would you like to state then what Griff did to get the Championship last year or just put out a few negatives he did????
While looking back, my opinion is that he did some great things but we lost the championship this year. We didn’t resign Delly. We are lacking defense so we let Liggins go and bring in Korver and Deron. Both are great players but choked when it mattered most. This team is old and has no draft picks. He can hang his hat on the championship and I thank Griffin for that. We just have too many old, offensive-minded players and no flexibility moving forward. He left us in a rough position. Hopefully new management can get some young, two-way players… Read more »
He also gave Varejao 30 million, Shumpert 40 million, TT and JR are both overpaid, especially the JR contract.
I’m glad they let Griff go. We weren’t even allowed to make a trade because his contract is expiring in two weeks. He let Delly and Liggins leave, brought in Korver and Deron who choked, and killed our future prospects. I don’t even think we have a first round pick for another 2-3 years and half the team is getting paid and ready to retire.
They didn’t give up anything for Deron, and I believe it’s a protected pick for Korver. We have a first rounder next year and in 2020. You can’t trade picks for back to back years because of the Cavs other shitty owner Ted Stepien.
We don’t have a ring without Griffin. Full stop.
https://twitter.com/daldridgetnt/status/877002543276142592
Of course he was. It’s a horrible move. Gilbert is a tool. There is no question he hastened LBJ’s first exit, and this may be the beginning of the end of the second exit. Griffin was GM of the year and was highly sought after this offseason for a reason. Another rich person thinking because they made a lot of money they are good at everything.
Gilbert made his money doing predatory lending practices that help to cause a financial collapse. He’s about to cause the collapse of the Cavs. What a douche.
Not surprised. Wonder how much of this is money related. Griff’s contract was significantly less than gms on other top contenders.
It was only a matter of time before Dan Gilbert was going to go all Comic Sans on the franchise again. If he hadn’t flipped the bill like has the past few years, he’d be in the running for worst NBA owner.
The best owners are the ones you never really hear about, like the dude that owns the Spurs.
We just can’t have nice things. Can we trade Gilbert home to Detroit?
Cavs FO has a great analytical culture. Hopefully whoever takes over keeps that going.
It’s not just about the system. It’s the people who runs it. Griff was the mind behind majority of Cavs positioned to success.
No way to see this as good news. What does Billups know about running a tram?
I know it’s a typo, but perhaps a Freudian typo? Billups knows as much about running a tram as he does a team…
Dude. He learned from the best! Joe Dumars got him his ring! Ugh.
Interesting note from the Windy/McTen story:
Gilbert has owned the team for 12½ years and in that time he has yet to come to an agreement with any of the general managers in his employ on a contract extension.
This was a good thing. I wouldn’t have extended those other guys either. But Griffin assembled a great team. He should’ve been kept.
So he has a history of making bad hires, which he seems intent on continuing. That’s not encouraging.
https://twitter.com/oldseaminer/status/876998261290172416
Yep
I think this is more the case. Seriously doubt it was over a move. He’s had all the time to re-up Griff.
https://twitter.com/ESPNSteinLine/status/876984671547949056
Damn.. they have just all worked out and everything LMAO!
OK COLS IT IS TIME FOR THE BOTH OF US TO START DRINKING ” HEAVILY “—–WOW WHAT A DAY !!—–STILL WILL BE INTERESTED TO HEAR LEBRONS 1ST COMMENTS ON THE SITUATION ……THAT WILL SHOW US ALOT ON WHAT WILL PROBABLY TRANSPIRE NEXT YEAR ——-ON THE POSITIVE MAYBE HE REALLY CONNECTS WITH CHAUNCEY —–BELIEVE THAT IS WHAT HAPPENED —GILBERT VETOED GRIFF’S TRADE
Not panic time yet. But close.
OMG EVEN COLS IS CRACKING!!!!!
I wonder if Griffin had a deal in place and Gilbert vetoed it and that was the end.
That’s my bet.
Griffin was gonna bring on more big contracts and Gilbert not having it anymore. He got his ring and Lebron is going to LA. No move he made was going to allow them to compete with GS anyway. Time to rebuild.
Why would he go to LA? They are a dumpster fire. He also is still here for next season. His player option is the year after next.
The clippers are not a dumpster fire. That is where the banana boat (including Paul George and Blake Griffin) are gonna team up. IMO
The rumors were PG to the lakers not the Clippers.
I thought the same.
Next question is: what was the price for Butler??????
I hope the Cavs are not trading for Butler, he is solid but he is not a good 3 point shooter which will affect the Cavs spacing a lot. The only good thing that could come out of this trade is that the Celtics will not get him then.
I think he’s a better defender than JR or Shump… and he’s a better shooter than Shump… obviously not as good as JR but JR is so streaky.
The scary part is that LeBron wasn’t consulted. Yikes.
ACCORDING TO STEVEB KYLER TY AND CHAUNCEY ARE GOOD FIRENDS —
OK WHAT THE HELL MIGHT AS WELL THROW THIS OUT THERE ( AS LUNATIC AS IT MAY SOUND ) IF NEXT YEAR REALLY STARTS TO SPIRAL DOWNWARD AND LEBRON GIVES EVERY INDICATION THAT HE WILL NOT RETURN —-DOES THE NEXT G.M. / OR GILBERT TRY TO TRADE LEBRON AND AT LEAST GET SOMETHING IN RETURN BEFORE HE BOLTS ——-JUST THROWING THAT CRAZY THOUGHT OUT THERE —–
It’s weird. I think this is Love versus Kyrie. Griff wanted to move Love (seems like the appease LeBron move) and DG would’ve rather moved Kyrie. No knowledge at all but that’s my spit ball.
I’m buying that theory. The other one is who would management rather have: a two-year Butler or a one-year PG13 movie…weak attempt at humor, but yeah, unless Gilbert is basically saying “My wallet is wide open, so I do not really need a GM,” this is a major step backward for this team…today, at least…
If Dan is even thinking of moving Kyrie that says a lot..
The positive take on word that LeBron wanted Griffin to stay is that he’s trying to quash more LeBron-is-GM talk.
The less positive take: Get NBA League Pass now to see record levels of passive-aggressiveness all season long!
https://twitter.com/AmicoHoops/status/876983143215104002
I read the complete opposite from Steve Kyler fwiw.
Who’s Kyler? And he was saying the opposite? Which one do you think rings truer to you?
Steve Kyler writes for basketball insiders.
https://twitter.com/stevekylerNBA/status/876981718946918400
Honestly, it was just money/respect /control, and Gilbert vetoing whatever trade he came up with was the straw that broke the camel’s back for Griffin.
Many thanks for posting the tweet and the info… Man… Kyler’s info sounds more legit, but what doesn’t make sense is that I view Griffin has a big time risk taker, win-at-all-cost, style…. do you view Griffin the same way???
My crackpot theory is that Griffin realized that he needed to think about the future after seeing what GSW did in adding Durant. I think he wanted to keep LBJ, KLOVE, and Kyrie… and move anyone else.
Agreed. Plus, as a Fox Sports guy, Amico is nominally on Dan’s payroll.
Wow… very interesting… because that’s what I was alluding to in my initial post. I thought Griffin had a “scorched earth” style that produced good results, but perhaps mortgaged the future too much.
If and when Lebron leaves, it’s going to be a dumpster fire, no matter what Gilbert or Griffin may want…
Gilbert knows Bron is gone and honestly he probably isn’t too pleased with how Bron talked about him on that Barbershop show Bron was on. If Bron really does leave, which i think he will, I think Gilbert starts the rebuild by trading Kyrie for a high draft pick .
Only scenario that makes sense to me is that Griff had a deal in place for Butler and Gilbert nixed it because it involved… Kyrie? (who?) So Griff said, “you have to let me do what I think is best” and Gilbert said no. So he walked.
Griff is an excellent GM, especially at doing deals. He hasn’t shown much ability to find young players or free agents that are surprise successes.
LBJ to LA might happen for sure. Ah well…
I think it’s the exact opposite. I think Griffin was going to bring on more contracts that Gilbert isn’t willing to pay for anymore. He got his ring. He’s done spending those major bucks. I think they trade Kyrie for a high draft pick THIS year. Maybe with the Suns.
This just bums me out entirely. Windhorst was on a podcast ( Lowe Post?) a couple weeks ago and said everyday that went by made him doubt more and more Griff would be back. Bums me out because I think Gilbert is such a joke but Griff have a level of respectability to the organization. Happy he doesn’t have to work for such a repugnant troll anymore at least.
https://twitter.com/kyleCLE/status/876802322315259904
probably wrote this on another blog but since it specifically pertains to the topic here I will repeat…think this was a power struggle between Gilbert and Griffin – Gilbert didn’t like the fact Griffin was getting ALL the credit for building championship teams and Gilbert wanted credit too – Griffin was trying to hard to build long term but believe Gilbert wanted to make ‘sexy’ moves to ‘win now’ (Melo, PG13, Butler, etc). Bringing in someone like Billups smells like Giblert wants to be the one with the success….remember Gilbert is known for hiring/firing Mike Brown twice…..hiring/firing David Blatt….wanting Tom… Read more »
Griff wanted a payday he deserved. Wasn’t going to take a one year deal. Sad.
Yuuuuge mistake
If I’m Gilbert, I wouldn’t pay huge money for Griffin either. How much was actual GM skills and how much happened simply because LBJ is on the team? If I had to guess I’d give 85% to Bron and 15% to Griffin.
Griffin made a bunch of smart moves on the margins, too…at the very least, Griffin is a good GM…his replacement may be a good deal less than that…
I doubt it was over credit. Gilbert definitely meddles but he’s shrewd enough not to worry about credit
Not an Amico fan, but he’s saying other teams were asking about Kyrie in trades and Griffin was unwilling. Maybe Gilbert is. Doubt Billups would trade him, since he thinks he’s a superstar, like Melo…
Like Amico the person more than Amico the reporter.
https://twitter.com/mcten/status/876977749243699201
Nice statement.
Cryptic yet blunt at the end — “the fit is not right for us.” Also looks a little sloppy, like it was rushed.
Yeah…
YES PRETTY SURE LEBRON IS HEADED TO L.A.—-SOME MEDIA SOURCE SAID HIS WIFE SAVAVAH PREFERS TO LIVE IN L.A. ALSO….WHICH ALSO COULD HAVE PROMPTED GRIFF’S DECISION —–SURE GILBERT HAS TIES WITH CHAUNCEY DURING HIS PISTONS DAYS —–RUMORS STILL HAVE CAVS TALKING WITH PACERS / BULLS
Imagine LeBron, Kyrie and Melo together on offense.
Actually I can’t. It would be like 80% isolation.
And the impact on defense… Ugh.
The defense will be the killer…
With griffin out, do I smell LeBron going to the lakers next season to join force with PG…what do you guys think?
I thought Lebron was gone somewhere after next season, most likely Lakers or Clippers, whether they kept Griffin or not…I’d sure rather have Griffin presiding over the transition than Billups…this is what crappy ownerships do, though…
https://twitter.com/HowardBeck/status/876973020866367488
Yeah. So are we. Sucks.
Situation reeks of mismanagement… starts at the top.
Maybe this was part of the deal to come back. Win a title and when James wants to go Gilbert does something to take the blame for him leaving again.
Dude, that’s more of a stretch than Rosemary Woods trying to show how she erased the Watergate tape.
Ha.
To clarify. I’m not defending this move. I think at dumb.
But hey, how bout that Tribe!
Alridge also tweeted that Griffin was about to pull off the Butler deal.
Why settle for Butler when you can trade thd house for Melo?
LOL….
If we were extremely close to getting Butler then I wonder what the heck happened.
Yup… I was very surprised Aldridge said that…. makes the situation even crazier. That means somehow Gilbert wanted to abort that deal.
Does…not…compute…
If true, talk about salt in the wound.
Agreed…. tons of respect for Butler’s game and improvement over the years.
DA isn’t a guy who throws crap at the wall just to see what sticks either.
Wow… stunning turn of events… can’t believe we were on the brink of bringing Butler in.

Maybe it’s for the good. Remember when everyone freaked out over Blatt. Hopefully this has the same ending.
Lol…seriously…
Yeah…that was Griffin….
Yeah, about that… If the Cavs return to the Finals and aren’t ready to compete until game 3 for the third year in a row, it will be clear Gilbert fired the wrong guy today.
Man this is a strange move. I wonder what happened?
Gilbert doesn’t like paying front office people. Also, Griffin probably wanted to be deliberate and smart and long term, while Gilbert wanted to ‘WIN NOW!!!!’. That’s my best guess.
We’ve been doing great. I have no problem with the way the Cavs have been run.
Which is terrifying cause you’re like the George Costanza of opinion having.
Says the guy who wanted to trade Kyrie and start delly. Says the guy who regularly melted down in March this year while I told you we were going to the Finals easily.
Yeah. I’m done with you misquoting me.
Lol stay strong Cols
Shut up Cols!
Cannot wait for your defense of Billups’ Love for Melo trade. I’ll have my popcorn ready.
Me: “I miss the CTB crew”…..Dan Gilbert: “Hold my beer”
Lol
What a gong show. Doesn’t matter if you like the move or not, the way it was handled was completely classless and bush league. To not let him interview and then let him walk is insane. Dan writes the checks and can do what he wants but something stinks.
I’m reserving judgment on Billups since it’s hard not to just straight associate him with the idiotic things Rose and Pierce said on a daily basis, but this just doesn’t seem like a smart move at all by @cavsdan
Yeah… I don’t get the timeline…. I didn’t realize Griffin wasn’t allowed to interview with other teams. Then I don’t get how Gilbert didn’t resolve the contract issue one way or another before now.
Happy Championship Anniversary, Griff! Oh, yeah — you’re fired!
It’s hard to see how this makes sense unless Gilbert is bringing in Durant as player/GM.
Now THAT would be a hire I could get behind…
Gilbert is willing to spend to win. That is his best quality. This is a silly move. Though the selling of our assets for older vets is James’s doing. Put blame where it deserves to be placed.
To play devil’s advocate as well (although my first response is being freaked out)…Griff spent $80M on Shump and JR, let Delly walk, and built a team with no defense. I worry cause I think it’s bad for culture but at same time maybe we over credit Griff. That said is Gilbert calling shots right now? Scary
Also have to include TT IMO… he was unplayable for 3 out of 5 finals games. He’s an undersized center who’s a complete zero on offense and doesn’t defend the rim on defense. Would rather have seen a shorter, cheaper contract for more flexibility.
Hard to say what was Griff, what was Bron, what was Kyrie, and what was Gilbert. I mean the Felder pick had Griff written all over it. Kyrie HATED Delly. Who knows?
What was the Kyrie thing? Agree on Felder
I think it was mainly that Delly tried hard in practice and was usually matched up with Kyrie, who found it annoying.
I don’t know just never got the feeling he respected Delly at all.
So we are going to hire chauncy billups? A man with no front office experience, to a team with almost no assets and he’s going to, what? Make moves? Great idea Gilbert. I see this working out wonderfully.
Sounds like the hire is a done deal. And Billups thinks Melo is a stud…cannot wait for the garbage trade that brings him to the Cavs…
Love for Melo? I give it at least a 40% chance.
Dumbest move in franchise history if they do it. They could have Melo for Frye, Shump, and change.
Agree, but from what Billups has been saying all season, he thinks Melo is a superstar. Probably would see it as a home run to get him for a ‘role player’. If it happens, I’m done for a while, after a cooling down period of mocking and ridiculing Billups.
Also this: later in the season, Jalen Rose and Billups *both* argued for a Love for Melo trade. It’s going to happen, unless Gilbert forbids it.
That would rank with Harper for Ferry, Warfield for Phipps, Colavito for Kuenn.
That will be the end.
Thanks for the chuckle. I needed that.
To play devil’s advocate… I’m kind of curious to see what’s next. I honestly thought Griffin made some questionable moves… I thought he sold too much of the future with some trades and signings. I’m not saying that all of his moves were a mistake and I’m not saying he didn’t do a good job bringing a ring to Cleveland. All I’m saying is that there might’ve been a missed opportunity by being a little more patient… perhaps building a team with a higher peak than this current one.
I hope Gilbert is not negotiating trades in a panic response to the NBA Finals. We don’t need to ship Love out of town. If we make a move, it better be one that drastically upgrades our team.
I wonder if there was a disagreement over trading Love?
Without Gilbert we wouldn’t have a title. Probably without Griffin too. Weird move. But I’m not going all in on the Gilbert bashing. Dude brought us a title and signed the checks for the largest payroll in the NBA.
I don’t like this move but let’s not go full Gilbert bashing.
Gilbert should put you on payroll.
I don’t like firing Griffin at all. I’m just not going into full bash Gilbert mode when no other owner has helped bring us a title. In over 50 years.
I don’t mind bashing him one bit. He’s been garbage since the start. I’ve been consistent on this from the start.
Hopefully what’s next is a blockbuster paul George trade.
With no real GM? Dream on.
Gilbert is a world class clown. As much as it’s going to suck to be completely irrelevant in a couple seasons, I’ll enjoying watching him get what’s coming.
Is it any wonder he’s a Trump supporter?
Gilbert has been a superb business person building Quicken Loans, but he sure looks much less than superb with this basketball move.
