Cavs Sign Osman
2017-07-12In a move that has been highly anticipated by their fans for some time, the Cleveland Cavaliers have signed 2015 draft pick Cedi Osman to a three-year deal worth $8.3 million. As part of the deal, the Cavaliers will pay $675,000 towards a buyout of Osman’s contract with Turkish club Anadolu Efes. Osman’s signing was first reported by Nikos Varlas of Eurohoops.net, and subsequently confirmed by Brian Windhorst of ESPN.
Cavs have agreed to sign 2015 draft pick Cedi Osman, sources said. Deal is 3 years, $8.3 million plus about $700,000 going to Euro buyout.
— Brian Windhorst (@WindhorstESPN) July 12, 2017
At 22 years old, Osman, who was the 31st pick in the 2015 NBA Draft (or first pick of the second round), brings length and athleticism to a Cavaliers team that was in dire need of those qualities off the bench last season. At 6’8″, Osman is known as a high motor player, and has been compared to players such as Tristan Thompson and Matthew Dellavedova in terms of the sheer effort he brings to the game. Now, Osman will be given the chance to prove that he belongs in the NBA and is ready to contribute on the court for the Eastern Conference Champions.
The question is, what kind of player will Osman be in the NBA? While Osman has had many fans here at Cavs: The Blog for a long time, no one can say for sure whether or not he will be able to have an impact, either next season or beyond. Osman has great size for a wing, has been an excellent defender in Euroleague play, and has shown the ability to get out in transition and slash to the rim, abilities that have been lacking on the Cavaliers’ bench. While he’s not the kind of player to run an offense through, Osman is a capable passer who will keep the ball moving.

On the other hand, he has been a mediocre shooter in a league where the three point line is much closer too the basket, is a poor rebounder for his size, and still needs to add some muscle to improve his effectiveness on both ends of the court. It’s also common for European players to struggle defensively when they first come to the NBA.

Whether Cedi Osman is able to help them in the regular season, postseason, or in a few years, this was a smart signing by the Cavaliers. Many analysts have said that this team needed to add youth and athleticism on the wing, and by signing Osman, they have done that. At worst, he will be able to develop at the NBA level, and soak up some regular season minutes, giving some veterans a rest. Considering the effort the Cavaliers have put into the regular season over the last couple of years, there should be plenty of minutes available to find out what Osman can do, as well as what he needs to improve upon to be the best player he can be. From what we’ve heard, effort won’t be the issue, so get read Cavalier fans, the Cedi Osman Experience is upon us.
Nice finish by Felder… He needs to attack the basket like he just did.
Williams needs to work on finishing. Had two 1v1 situations close to the basket he couldn’t win.
Too bad Brandon Paul isn’t from Detroit. Dan would’ve made him a starter.
Gill runs the court very well. Gotta bucket and got fouled on another.
Tavares will never play meaningful minutes for the Cavs. He’s too slow for today’s game.
Man, are these broadcasters already nominating Ball to the Hall of Fame?
Slightly annoying how much the camera is on Ball in this game
Felder stinks!
Williams with the jump ball against Ball! Two great defensive plays in the early going.
Tavares a bit of a rough start. Bricks hook shot on the block and gives up and 1 on the other end to Vander Blue
Williams with great defense and assist to Prather for the jam!!!
Felder makes his first outside shot.
Cavs’ defense should be tested for the first time this summer.
To bad the Cavs don’t have Brandon Paul for tonight.
Man, if we could just beat the Warriors in the finals then we’d get Durant on the team – I think thats what we need to focus on here guys
https://twitter.com/ramonashelburne/status/885677792079134720
Glad Gilbert and Altman are staying patient with this situation.
Jazz Sign Ekpe Udoh. Cavs getting straight pwned this offseason.
Can Cavs dump TT and Shump somehow? We need to be signing guys like Jonathon Simmons.
Shut up, Cols!
https://twitter.com/wojespn/status/885668745540026372
Jazz expected to wave boris diaw what do you thing if cavs went after him
I don’t think he would fit the isolation based offense we run… only a career 33% shooter from 3 and shot 24.7% from 3 just last season. I don’t think he would see the floor much against the Warriors.
I didn’t realize his three point percentage was so low, just thinking of what to do with vet min contracts
AGREE WITH JASON ALMOST LIKE A TRADE
https://twitter.com/ZachLowe_NBA/status/885541345225433089
The Spurs had to pull their offer to RFA Simmons to sign Paul. Simmons is an UFA now. I’d put him as a top tier target for us. Luc or Allen or Simmons.
Lol, Simmons would be a dream
I don’t think they had to. They chose to.
SPORTS ILLUSTRATED HAS A GOOD ARTICE (LAST PAGE )—-” DAN OF LETTERS —BY MICHAEL ROSENBURG “–GOOD READ —FORM YOUR OWN OPINION AFTER READING
Maybe I am reading the Ringer too much, but this is starting to feel a little like the last year of the Heatles.
Yes Kyrie and Love are younger/better than Wade and Bosh at that point, but we are completely capped out and haven’t made any smart fringe moves to keep getting better. Also, Lebron seems to not be actively engaged and I can’t really blame him since the team is run very poorly right now. Hope I am wrong, but I sure will cherish next season as the last Lebron plays in Cleveland.
So Osman and Green don’t count? Getting Korver doesn’t count? Buyout Wade won’t count?
We aren’t going to be significantly better, unless Kyrie makes a huge jump defensively and Osman is a rookie of the year candidate and Green becomes a sixth man of the year candidate. We have more or less about the same talent level. It is what it is. There were only a few moves that could have been made to gamble on matching up way better with the warriors. Those moves would have been a short term gamble anyway. I am not even sure Melo helps on anything more than a buyout vet minimum. Even then, he is so bad… Read more »
What were they supposed to add? They won the title a year ago and added less to that team last summer than they have this year. They lost their backup center and replaced him with LeBron’s washed buddy Chris Anderson. They lost their backup point guard and replaced him with nothing. As bad as Green has been in his career, he’s had his moments. He’s not the guy who was traded for Ray Allen, or the guy who the Magic dropped $15 million on. If he’s the ninth guy, that works. Calderon is way past his s prime, but he… Read more »
Not saying they could have or should have gambled by trading guys. Just saying they won’t be significantly better than they were in the playoffs this year based off the talent returning and added.
You are correct. The only difference is that LBJ doesn’t haven unfinished business anywhere. This is his home and he may be content to stay for that reason. Actually, Dan will have to actively drive him away, which he is doing. We’ll see how successful it is.
Brandon Paul just signed a guaranteed contract with the Spurs. Sigh.
Of course…
The act quickly when they see talent. Great organization.
*They
Well. Perhaps we were only offering a 2 way. I’d take Paul over Shump.
Just thinking about it, we now have Osman and Green as wings on the bench who are probably both improvements over our bench wings from last year.
Question is, will Lue let them play or is he going to keep using Schump when everyone knows Schump isn’t usable?
If we keep Shump we should play him because good Shump is exactly the type of player we need. However I realize that good Shump doesn’t happen very often. But I think Lue will play both Green because he has a history with him and Osman because he’s young and athletic.
The problem with Shump, as we all know, is the fact that whatever he gives you on defense he usually squanders in offense.
How many times did we not scream at the TV for him to pass the ball and stop dribbling? I know I did.
To top it off, Lue’s inability to find time for Derrick, specially when Shump was awful, leads me to believe he won’t find time for Cedi. Although I think Green will play.
Derrick Williams sucks. Except for a brief stretch where he was decent for us in February. After that he fell off. Got lost on defense and jacked up shots. There’s a reason no one has signed him and he keeps getting cut from teams.
He didn’t fall off Cols, he stopped getting minutes. Abruptly.
Shump is more of a 1/2. Can defend either G spot. Strictly a 2 on offense. Cedi is 6’8″ and is more of a 2/3. Green is a 3/4 combo forward. They are different players.
I expect Shump to get the playing time… sigh…
I’m not sure they are improvements?
Green averaged 9 a game. That would be 2nd to Korver on our bench. Cedi & Green are huge ugrades to the Jonses.
He averaged 9 a game on the Magic. I’m not sure he can play any better than Williams.
Who knows about Osman?
I don’t think either will move the needle to be honest.
The Cavs haven’t really improved the roster from last year, which can still win the East, but won’t get passed the Warriors.
+1. ‘Didn’t move the needle’ is fair. It is amusing, however, reading Cols crowing about Green.
Also… huge upgrades? They may be upgrades. They may not. But let’s be honest no one really wanted Green, he stunk last year, and Cedi is a rookie coming from the Euro league.
That’s like saying that the next President will be better than Trump.
Green is garbage: a hot steaming pile of quit.
SO THE “SUMMER CAVS ” GET THEIR SHOT AT LONZO —–PUT ” SIR D ” ON HIM SEE WHAT HE REALLY CAN DO DEFENSIVELY
JASON I SAW THAT AMICO POLL ALSO ( HAD TO LAUGH OR PUKE ) THAT MUST BE MELO SENDING IN ALL THE “YES ” VOTES —-GO AHEAD AND LET THE ROCKETS TRADE ( GIVE WAY TOO MUCH FOR HIM )
Nwaba? http://kingjamesgospel.com/2017/07/13/cleveland-cavaliers-should-sign-david-nwaba/
Definitely worth taking a flier on.
You guys think some players are bypassing Cleveland for money since they don’t think the Cavs have a shot at GS?
Certainly possible. Not sure. Doesn’t seem like we’ve signed any “ring chasers”
I don’t think there are THAT many players in any given year willing to take drastically less money to chase a ring. Ring chasers have typically already made the vast majority of what they are going to make in their playing careers. I don’t know that there were many players this offseason that fit in that category.
Perhaps as more players are signed, we’ll be left with a solid choice for a vet minimum. Otherwise, the buyout season is probably our best bet.
No. It certainly hasn’t seemed like that at all.
No. However, the Dubs are at the top of the ring chasing food chain. West, McGee, & Zaza last year. Young & Casspi this. We are second tier. Unless we jettison Shump or Frye, we have one more move. I’d go for a stopper. Mbah a Moute or Allen.
Zaza and West were good pick ups. McGee still sucks. Young and Casspi are like their 11th and 12th bench guys. We could definitely use Luc or Allen, but otherwise not much out there that moves the needle and I doubt those guys want the vet min.
Yes. I think they definitely are. The Cavs were full strength and got beat 4-1. Other teams that are making big moves, even if they are not better, are different, and that alone makes people think they have a shot. No one believes the Cavs, as currently constructed, can win another title while GS exists. Which is kind of silly, but that’s how people think.
The Raptors have talked about making a play for former Clippers forward Luc Mbah a Moute, reports Michael Grange of Rogers Sportsnet (Twitter link).
The Clippers and Timberwolves are both considering Tony Allen, according to Tim MacMahon of ESPN.com (Twitter link). Coaches Doc Rivers in L.A. and Tom Thibodeau in Minnesota have connections with Allen from their time with the Celtics.
https://www.hoopsrumors.com/2017/07/fa-rumors-muhammad-farmar-mbah-a-moute-allen.html?fv-home=true&post-id=69519
Things are heating up in the market. We will need to sell guys on being here.
LeBron, Kyrie and Love should all be out there recruiting. Who knows if they are, though.
Sounds like LeBron was talking to Green and Crawford before all of this so I think he is. The question is more of money and role. I doubt Luc wants to take the vet minimum.
Update on Brandon Paul. He has left the team. No deal, however. Just a lot of ball after playing in Orlando. He is my #1 pick for a 2 way deal.
Ball balled out…. trying to impress LBJ I guess LMAO!!!
Further evidence that most people are dumb: Amico’s running a poll on if we should trade Love for Melo. Yes is ahead handily.
Amico’s readers are not bright.
That would be an absolutely disastrous trade for us.
I watched his chat the other day. Most of the questions were about Melo for Love. It was pretty pathetic.
Josh Jackson is going to be a monster two way player.
15 rebounds is crazy!
Yep and that one block in the last game was pretty awesome. I liked his game at KU and I like it even more after watching him in summer league a bit.
It’s crazy how Lebron’s presence alone changes the whole game! LMAO… As soon as Lebron came in, guys started going 100%.
HOLY SHIT>>>> LONZO BALL looking like KLOVE.
THE KING IS IN THE BUILDING!!! LBJ courtside for summer league!!!
Greatest burn in ESPY history. https://t.co/Xi7idHbWVi
Yes hahahahahahahahahahahahaha!!!!!!!!!!!!
Oh man. Inject that straight into my brain

You guys gotta watch this sick burn Peyton Manning lays on KD – priceless

That was pretty funny!
THE”MIGHTY QUINN ” HAVING A SOLID SUMMER LEAGUE—-PUT UP 26PTS TONIGHT
Pretty sure he’s under contract
YOU CAN’T COACH SIZE ( WHICH BIG EDY HAS PLENTY OF )—-THINK HE WILL BE FINE FOR 5-7 MINUTES / GAME THIS YEAR AND SEE HOW HE PROGRESSES —–YES HE IS SLOW BUT THINK HE HAD 5 BLOCKS THE OTHER NIGHT AND ALTERED / DISRUPTED MANY MORE
Jazz sign Tabo Sefolosha I thought he would fit with the Cavs, I guess we are pretty much standing pat.
GreekCavsFan has me pretty down on Cedi; hope we didn’t just waste a bunch of our MLE for a useless player
The mistake the organization appears to have made is not bringing Cedi over last year. The big problem with this past year is that his game regressed in Turkey. He should’ve been over here dealing with NBA speed and strength of competition…. even if in the D/G league. Big mistake… wasted a whole year.
I think it’s crazy to call it a mistake that we didn’t bring over a raw, inexperienced player last year to help defend our title. I swear you guys try hard to find ways to criticize our championship team.
I never said he would “help defend the title.” I said he could’ve been getting NBA training rather than regressing with a Turkish team who probably has nothing resembling an NBA-level infrastructure.
I think you’re trying hard to find a way to be offended by an innocuous comment.
Cedi was still under contract in Turkey last year. It would’ve been hard if not impossible to bring him over.
He had a buyout. It would’ve been easy to bring him over…. literally all you had to was write a check.
Return of the Cedi
Nice. Though when did he leave? Vegas to Turkey to Cleveland I guess. I generally like the idea of having vets to mentor younger guys at their positions. Calderon, RJ, & Frye should be excellent in the Amthony Parker role. Hopefully Felder, Cedi, & Tavares heed them. Kyrie as well.
I really hope that Tavares isn’t too slow for the NBA. He’s just so freaking big. If we can get 5-8 minutes from him a night it would help out.
He is too slow for the NBA.
So was Larry Bird.
Last game of the regular season:
24min, 6pts., 10reb., 6blk. and 1ast.
Dude is ready for 10-12 minutes of play.
NBA was slower then.
A couple in Columbus.
HEY RAOUL SEE THERE IS ONE IN TOLEDO AND ANOTHER OPENING IN MENTOR ——YEAH MADE ME HUNGRY ( AND THIRSTY FOR A BEER ) TOO!!
I am always hungry, and thirsty for a beer, too! Unfortunately, I am on the wagon for a month or two. Believe me, punk rock shows are no fun without several beers!
Things I learned today about the Finals: they played a fantastic game 1 defensively. Best defensive game of the year, hands down. But after that they had a 123.3 ORtg to our 120.3 ORtg. It was a shootout, and they won by a bit.
Granted, our defense is incapable of playing a game like their Game 1 and it does need improvement but sacrificing the offense that broke their amazing defense Games 2-5 isn’t the answer.
From EVR at FTS
We are the back-to-back champions in most seasons. Unfortunately, GS is the better offensive team and the better defensive team, and we haven’t done anything yet to close the gap. We really need a Melo or Wade signing, IMO. Even moving Love for a PG13 wouldn’t have done THAT much IMO. We’d still be down a (super)star. If we can add a borderline star to our Big 3, we would be in business.

Anyone know where they are in Ohio? Evil?
One in Belden Village in Canton/Jackson
One in Columbus as well.

Gotta respect a hustler. I’d take him over Shump.
Nope. At least there is a small possibility Shump can harness it and be good. Gee just sucks.
Nope. Gee plays within himself.
It took me all day to get the curbed joke from downthread. I suck.
I still don’t get it.
I reaaaaaaaaaally hope the Rockets don’t trade for Melo. He is really our get out of jail free card at this point. We don’t have the assets to move the needle in terms of improving the team. We will run out substantially the same team as last year. If we could steal Melo after a buyout, I’d actually be confident that we could topple the Warriors come next postseason.
Our bench should be improved with Green, Cedi, and the entire year of Korver instead of a few months. But we should also be happy to bring the team back. We weren’t that far off of the fraudulent ones and they had Durant playing better than he ever has before. If we get 2016 WCF Durant, instead of making 60% contested shots Durant we are celebrating title number two right now.
Agreed. Love did well (save for game 5). James was fantastic. Kyrie & TT took the first two games off & JR struggled early. Korver struggled, for him. Deron was awful. And yet, we were 2 minutes from winning game 3 & hung around game 5.
Some improved PG play from Kyrie. A slight uptick from the bench. More rest for James, & Durant returning to the mean & we are there. A Melo/Wade buyout would help.
At this point I don’t think Melo is realistic. But Wade is definitely in play.
At this point, I wouldn’t be surprised if TT had like 3 or 4 lingering injuries. He needed to drop the Ironman streak much, much earlier. Hopefully now that its over he’s much more willing to take a night off.
Agree with Cols.
I think it’s pretty much an unknown whether the bench will be better. We have literally zero idea whether Cedi will be any good. The guy average 7 ppg in the Euroleague. Is that even decent? He has a long way to go before he knows the ins and outs of the NBA game. I think best case scenario he becomes a rotation guy by the end of the season. Korver for an entire season doesn’t move the needle against Golden State, but I agree it’s better to having the best 3pt shooter (%) in the NBA last season back… Read more »
How about Wade?
Wade would be a great get too. I like Melo’s upside from 3pt range with new found motivation in playing on a winner, but Wade would be no slouch.
If Shump gets moved the 2nd unit will be a lot different: Calderon, Cedi, Korver, Green, Frye/RJ.
Ye Gods. Worst defense ever.
I doubt all would play together. And it is close to what it was last year. Cedi for Shump, Calderon for DWill, Green for RJ. I’d say two upgrades & one down.
If we got Mbah a Moute, we’d have Luc & a Jedi.
If Boris Diaw isn’t kept by the Jazz, he could always come play for the Cavs. He’s 35, so he’ll fit right in.
If they widen the doors and the seats on the plane.
We already did that for Delly. No problem there.
That doesn’t even make any sense.
I go to respond to these comments and just shake my head.
Come on, at least this was a funny way of making the same comment =) I credit Cols on this one
Don’t forget your meds!
You can’t drop any of your more stupid comments, can you, Cols? Bury this comment or at least file it in one labeled “insipid.”
More than two years of this particular nonsense about Delly…
To quote Cols from yesterday, “Let’s not go through this again.”
https://twitter.com/TimBontemps/status/885215567623278593
On fewer timeouts, especially in last 3 min.
https://twitter.com/oldseaminer/status/885211243711262721
Much as I love the timeout rules it is going to make benches even more valuable. Cavs can’t just coast to the end and rest on timeouts.
HOPING WE AREN’T HYPING UP THE “JEDI ” EXPECT TOO MUCH FROM HIM AT THE START …..WILL BE A HUGE ADJUSTMENT PERIOD FOR HIM …..JUST APPRECIATE HIS MOTOR / HUSTLE AT THE START
His teammate in Turkey has been our best summer league player. Energy guys translate better. Delly. Liggins.
I’d love Allen or Luc Mbah a Moute. Either would likely mean the end of Shump. Though we do have 1 spot open. Trading Frye only makes sense if Melo is coming. We only have 4 bigs counting Tavares. Yes, James, Green, & RJ can all play some. Still, there are a lot of nights where Frye is a huge asset.
Yeah. Frye is a great matchup tool. I’d like to keep him.
Awesome….
https://twitter.com/wojespn/status/885196391903002625
So happy
https://twitter.com/wojespn/status/885197465519108102
That’s fantastic. I hate time outs. The fewer the better.
No Cedi for the summer league.
According to Amico: The Cavs have expressed interest in Tony Allen. That possibility is still there. Right now, they seem focused on trades that will move Iman Shumpert and/or Channing Frye. Especially Shumpert.
Per Amico: My guess is, Shumpert is traded before camp. Once the Carmelo situation is resolved is when the Cavs and others will really start making some deals, IMO.
Gotta find someone dumb enough to take him.
Well, Phil Jackson just might….err, never mind.
Shump useful on right team. That team is a team with multiple guards who will tell Shump “never dribble.”
We tried this and it worked from November-JR broke his hand. Then it worked from Indiana benching-game one of the Finals. Shump just never remembers he can’t dribble.
Itbis the NBA, there is always someone dumb enough. I’d start with Chicago, Indy, & NY. Sacramento or NO is worth a call. Charlotte.
If the NBA has taught us anything, it’s that there’s always someone dumb enough to take a bad contract.
I have curbed my enthusiasm for Cedi. If he can play, it’s found money to me.
Hopefully he’s Pretty… pretty… pretty… PRETTY GOOD!!!
Haha!
Uber giddy for the return of Curb.
Amico just said that several teams are interested in Mbah A Moute. He was linked to Utah, but they just signed Thabo. And the Clippers remain a possibility.
Cavs don’t have the dough.
For the vet minimum.
https://twitter.com/TheVertical/status/885197216968847363
I like this. Gives new players the All-Star break to acclimate themselves.
This may prove extremely awkward.
https://twitter.com/wojespn/status/885196391903002625
Amen.
Now they just need to do a better job of speeding up baseball.
I got no problem with baseball. I did complain about it being slow before I was 40 or so. It takes a long time to figure out what is going on in baseball.
https://twitter.com/wojespn/status/885197465519108102
Not good for us. We use those timeouts to rest LeBron when he needs it the most. Will have to compensate for this throughout the game.
I wonder how many coaches will pull a “David Blatt” or “Chris Webber” and call a time out when they don’t have one?
the “almost David Blatt”
Low risk, high reward young wing player. Sign me up. If he doesn’t pan out, so be it.
https://twitter.com/ShamsCharania/status/885197006318075904
Only wanted Mbah A Moute anyhow. Fingers crossed. Doubt we get him.
Luc is also younger and he could teach Cedi how to be a Jedi.
Works on so many levels.
Great review of Osman. Balanced and realistic. I think the key issue is whether his athleticism translates to NBA game. If it does, he could be really good as an energy/slasher/defender with upside as a shooter. If it doesn’t, he may never see the floor.
Yep.
