Cavs Sign Derrick Rose to One Year Deal
2017-07-24Per Brian Windhorst and Adrian Wojnarowski, the Cleveland Cavaliers and Derrick Rose were in serious talks about a 1-year deal late on Thursday morning.
Derrick Rose has committed to sign with the Cleveland Cavaliers and completed his physical exam today, league sources tell The Vertical.
— Shams Charania (@ShamsCharania) July 24, 2017
As of this evening, reports indicate that Rose signed for the minimum of a player with his tenure, $2.1 million dollars for the 2017-2018 season. The former MVP will suit up for the Cavs, either as the starter or the first bench guard, depending on how the Kyrie Irving situation shakes out. The Lakers and Cavs were reported to be the two teams vying for Derrick’s services, but with the turmoil caused by the leak of Kyrie Irving’s trade demands, the possibility of starting for the reigning eastern conference champions, surely trumped the opportuntity to mentor Lonzo Ball.
According to ESPN’s Ian Begley, Rose was once seeking a five year, $150 million dollar contract this offseason, but the Knicks poor showing and turbulent season, combined with Rose’s unexpected and unexplained disappearance before a Monday night game in January, dramatically dropped his demand around the league. In addition Rose faced a long and distracting $21.5 million civil rape case before last season, and was eventually found “not liable.” Still, the lurid details of the case had to turn off many a suitor.
While the fit may be somewhat odd on the court, as Rose is not the best three point shooter (21.7% in 2016-17 and career 29.8% mark), the Cavs are looking to add scoring and playmaking to match up with other contenders in the league. Derrick Rose had a surprising year for the New York Knicks, averaging 18 ppg on 47.1% shooting while adding 4.4 apg on 2.3 topg. The signing of Rose, however, begs the question on the Jose Calderon signing as both play the same position and aren’t considered to be above average defenders. With the Cavs rumored to be looking to package Iman Shumpert in Kyrie Irving deals, a defensive guard could be a must.
With the signing, the Cavs are at 15 players and still well into the luxury tax, but as we all know, this team is very much in flux.
https://twitter.com/Dame_Lillard/status/890282140687978496
LOL Dame doesn’t like to be considered a non-winner
That’s pretty funny. Lillard doesn’t want to be compared to Kyrie because Kyrie isn’t as good.
Not sure what Minnesota thinks they have to offer us if they aren’t willing to move Wiggins or KAT. Don’t really think I even want Wiggins.
I have no idea why the media thinks Wiggins has enough value to net Kyrie. One of the writers here at CtB did a breakdown of Wiggins (or maybe it was another website), and his defense is garbage and his offense is of a volume chucker who doesn’t pass the ball and isn’t efficient.
Wiggins has been around long enough for us to all know that he’s not an all-star caliber player. Why on earth would we trade Kyrie for a guy that can’t shoot, isn’t great on defense, and doesn’t share the basketball?
Kyrie obviously greater impact player than Wiggins and priority should be to get an all star guard for Kyrie. However, Wiggins is 22 year old, missed just 1 game in 3 seasons, averaged 23.6 ppg. 23.6 ppg on 19 shots and 54% TS% may not exactly is volume shooter. How many 22 year olds averaged 23 ppg in 82 games ? He also has length and athletism to become a great defender at the position of most demand. On a right team like Cavs playing next to Lebron, I can see Wiggins improve on defense too. Wiggins + for Kyrie… Read more »
Sucks that Teague can’t be traded till December. Teague, Wiggins and something for Kyrie is a solid trade.
Minny has lot of assets, so a 3 way trade, say Dieng going somewhere else can probably net a PG just not a star guard.
Dieng sucks.
That’s the move that makes the most sense. Wait. See if two grown men can coexist within the franchise at the start of the season. If not, trade Kyrie for Teague and Wiggins. Teague can give them 80% of what Kyrie did with better defense. Wiggins is 22 and will continue to grow. He’s been on a rebuilding team and he’s a kid. They are all terrible at defense.
I don’t love Wiggins at all, but if they still had Rubio, Wiggins and Rubio would be a decent trade. My fear is that Gilbert may lust for Wiggins.
Don’t want Wiggins, never will. Over-rated.
Been gone for a few weeks… anything interesting happen?
Buahahahahahaahahhaaa
Oh EG, you’ve always been the funny one.
How I prefer to spend my summer/NBA offseason…
http://wonderopolis.org/wp-content/uploads//2015/03/1425_3.jpg
Probably more comfortable than the dumpster fire we’ve been dealing with…
Cavs signed Jeff Green. Very exciting.
Lebron and Derrick Rose working out together in Vegas.
You Bet! The Indians were stinking up the gym, and Kyrie mumbled a magic incantation, and now they can’t lose.
I think Cavs should look at Boston, Detroit as well. Jaylen Brown, Tatum, Crowder, Smart, Stanley Johnson, those are the type of guys Cavs really need.
Detroit, sure. Boston gets tricky because they would want to swap IT which I won’t want. Plus as I mentioned before, no need to help Boston get better, specially if LeBron is thinking of leaving.
I wouldn’t want to see Boston as the best east team, led by Kyrie.
It is goofy to cut out half the teams because they are in your division. Don’t forget Boston won’t have the players it trades.
Detroit could send us Drummond, but does that really fit our team? Not sure he helps against GS unless we can add a lot of perimeter defense.
I’ll take Avery Bradley, Stanley Johnson, and a pick if they want Kyrie.
Really? A superstar and future HOF for role players and a pick? I don’t know, man.
Yeah, no way.
No way to what? Bradley, Stanley, pick?
No way to Bradley. Stanley. Pick. No way to Drummond.
Drummond is a nobody. He can’t even stay on the court. Helps us not at all against GS. Stanley and Bradley are both improvements defensively. We definitely lose out on the offensive end, but that is happening no matter who we get in return.
The goal has to be to beat GS, though. Giving up a star for role players simply doesn’t help us do that. Maybe getting a lesser star back plus a role player works, but you can’t beat GS going 2v4 in star power.
Well, if that’s the case, we rule out Detroit all together. There isn’t a star on that team.
Not sure future HOF is clear yet. It probably would have been, but he will likely be a bit of a laughing stock from here on out.
I don’t want to help Boston either but they have player that would help us. There is no way that ream without Brown could beat us.
To anyone who says “Kyrie is not that good” – he stands out in Team USA practices. Like his elite offensive skills are better than the other elite players. He’s played Curry to a draw over the course of these multiple finals, if not slightly outplayed him.
He needs good defenders around him, but don’t underrate Kyrie because he slacks in the regular season. His playoff offensive potential is basically 3rd behind LeBron and Durant. Maybe Anthony Davis.
I’d put him 6th behind LeBron, KD, Curry, Kawhi, Harden.
That’s fair. I’d call it a draw with Curry, and I don’t think Harden is the same offensive player in the playoffs. I just think Kawhi is way overrated, I would love to see him trying to carry a bad franchise like the Kings. Only on offense, he’s a monster on defense. I just don’t think he’s a great playmaker
You guys are dreaming. There is no way Kyrie could carry a team like Hardin and Westbrook do. He is too fragile for one thing.
Maybe a better way of what I’m trying to say: Harden and Westbrook are better than Kyrie for carrying a team in the regular season, and getting a bad team to the playoffs. But Kyrie is the better offensive player in the playoffs for a great team.
Good.Send this message to all the GM’s out there.
Don’t hate this trade if the Knicks give up two unprotected first rounders, and possible the right to swap in another draft. No stars, but leaves the Cavs thin on guards.
http://www.espn.com/nba/tradeMachine?tradeId=ydgy6lbr
I would.
No one is going to take Kay Felder. It’d be a miracle if we could get someone to take Shump. It’s so obvious to the whole league that we’re trying to dump them.
Felder is just cap fodder.
Felder’s contract is non-guaranteed right? Easily just be waived.
Partial guarantee. Would save the Cavs a couple million to trade him and a few hundred thousand for the team getting him. Plus want to clear the roster spot. The team getting him could waive him easily.
Yuck, no thanks. I’d rather hold onto him and move him at the deadline.
Awesome lose – lose trade. One team is -5, the other is -3.
How about Jalen Brown and Isiah Thomas, maybe a pick for Kyrie. We get our athletic wing Boston gets an upgrade at pg and does not have to max Isiah. Then we flip Isiah or get a third team involved to get another player.
Not arming the Celtics to beat the Cavs. Sorry.
Yeah, why would you want to pair Ky with Hayward? Nah…
The only thing that keeps Boston from being an actual threat is clutch bucket getters and the fact that they’re playing 4-on-5 defensively with IT. I wouldn’t want to see Kyrie there. Now would I do it for Tatum , Crowder, and two high picks? Maybe.
Throw in next year’s Brooklyn pick.
Kyrie + Hayward wouldn’t scare me. If we received Brown and Tatum (which we won’t), we could flip one or both for an established star at the deadline.
I agree. Everybody else at the top of the east stalled towards the end of the season especially the Cavs trying to assimilate guys and Boston stumbled over the line first. I still don’t think they are good and I don’t think Kyrie is an upgrade over IT against the Cavs because IT fits their system better. Hayward is solid but has not been a huge difference maker to Utah in his career either. I wouldn’t be afraid of trading with either Boston or Toronto. i would love to get Lowry actually but probably not realistic unless they want to… Read more »
besides, never trade with your rival.
I would do it for Smart, Brown, and Tatum actually. Cavs would kill the Celtics if Kyrie went there.
New jerseys are uuuuuugllllyyyyyyy
Off-season additions are terrrrrrrribbbblllleeee
Owner is a moooorrrrrrooonnnnn
Front office is a messsssssssssssssss
But if we can get rid of Kyrie and Shump for good defenders and shooters, we’ll be the best team in the league and win another championship and laugh at this summer.
Agree on the first part. They’re hideous. WTF is that font?
Well, actually agree on all the parts, but especially on the unis.
Sigh. All I wanted to do was get some more athletic wings (accomplished this) and run it back. I’m so mad at Kyrie.
I genuinely believe we can improve our team if we make the right Kyrie trade. My personal preference is to get an established all-star caliber player + a young, unproven guy that has trade value. Then flip the young, unproven guy (e.g., Josh Jackson) to NO or OKC for Boogie/PG13. We should be in no rush to deal Kyrie, and his value is sky high. The guy is the perfect player for most franchises to build around (and to sell tickets with). Phoenix, New York, Milwaukee, Philly, etc. would all love a guy that is going to light it up… Read more »
His value is sky high? Did you know every sportswriter and ESPN yammerer is having a field day about his blunder? What role can he fill for another team? He wants to be the star. We saw how that worked before LeBron came back.
Get a clue bud.
Apparently word is now that Kyrie to Knicks trade is being held up by Melo wanting to play for Houston…
Who do we get in this trade?
I don’t think it holds much water, no other names were mentioned.
If Altman trades Irving for Melo, he should get fired on the spot. Porz? Sure.
Agreed, except we should be able to get more than Porzingis for Kyrie straight up. Although, we could flip Porzingis for an established star.
Would take Kyrie for the Zinger straight up in a heartbeat. Salaries don’t work though, so the Cavs have to throw in cap fodder.
Are you kidding?
Absolutely.
Unless we are getting Porzingis and Melo, I want nothing to do with a Knicks trade. Yuck.
That is good news for cavs, Kyrie for Melo would be bad for cavs, IMO.
http://www.espn.com/nba/tradeMachine?tradeId=ydhebk5f
Would Milwaukee have any interest in this one? Probably not.
The Suns wont
Durant leaves team to a win a championship:
Kyrie wants to leave a championship team to go it alone.
Interent hates both.
Durant didn’t just leave his team. He’s one of the main reasons they lost to the team he went to. Coward.
Cool story.
Latest news: Durant is a champion and finals MVP.
Durant is a pansy.
no, he is not. Going to a team he likes to play with and win, he earned that like how Lebron earned to go to play with his friends and to his preferred destination to win championship.
Going to the team that beat him because he choked is a coward move.
You are almost making me put my own favorite player in Lebron in negative light when and if I respond to you. Lebron, KG and Durant all gave everything they got before moving on, get this, for winning. Not for individual accolades. Can’t fault anyone who puts winning as priority over all else. Something I doubt you will understand being Kyrie’s, Dunleavy and Shump’s biggest fan. Get over it and focus on Cavs, don’t use KD as reason for what is happening in cleveland.
Wapner is on in 7 minutes. Judge Wapner.
GTFO
Unfortunately, most NBA teams and everyone else is catching on to what CtB readers (not named Cols) know, which is that Kyrie is not that good without playing in the shadow of LeBron. We will be lucky if Koby gets a decent return on him.
Nah. Kyrie is one of the very very few guys that can score at will and efficiently. We are not overrating him. Listen to the Zach Lowe podcast.
Yeah, this is clearly just upset Cavs fans wishing he wasn’t as good as he is so that his desire to leave hurts less. Kyrie is an unbelievable talent, a future hall of famer, one of the most prolific scorer in the NBA, the best finisher in the NBA, a very clutch player, arguably the best handles in the NBA, a guy who can score from anywhere on the court, etc.
Is he the best player in the NBA? No. Does he have defensive weaknesses? Yes. “Not that good without playing in the shadow of LeBron.” That’s idiotic.
Good. Then you can get rich by taking out some bets on how often Kyrie gets to the finals without LeBron.
So your logic is “Kyrie isn’t good because he can’t carry a team to the Finals by himself”? I guess Paul George, Chris Paul, James Harden, Russell Westbrook, DeMarcus Cousins, Kevin Love, Alphabet, and basically every other player in the NBA not named Steph Curry, Kevin Durant or LeBron James is “not good” without playing with the GOAT because they also haven’t been able to be the #1 on a squad that makes it to the NBA Finals. Kyrie Irving can be like the supermajority of other players in the NBA and not be able to carry a team to… Read more »
Imagine how much Lebron can lift another guard like Damian, McCollum, Conley, Bledsoe, Dragic, Holiday, Teague etc.., if Kyrie were traded for them. Almost every other starting guard is a better defender and hustles more than Kyrie. Add one plus one and it is clear that Kyrie’s priority is neither to win nor even to become a focal point, he wants to grown his own brand. May be he is trying to be selected to all NBA teams by averaging 30 ppg, to get that 40 mils a year contract or go to some team like knicks to grow his… Read more »
Kyrie>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>all those guys who just wrote.
Kyrie has this in common with Jack White, formerly of the White Stripes:
He may be a one trick pony, but it is a great trick.
Haha. Nice line. Saw him on best of austin city limits last night.
+1, lol.
I promise I’m not trolling, just trying to think of outside-the-box ideas for this trade. And again, I don’t think the Cavs should move Kyrie unless they can get someone younger (like Towns) or better (like Paul George). And neither seem likely. More would have to be involved, but what about this: Cavs get Bradley Beal Pelicans get Kyrie Wizards get Boogie Boogie plays with his good friend Wall in DC, and I think those 2 would dominate. Beal has another playoff gear, and though it may not be Kyrie, it’s close. And the Pelicans get the ballhandler That disgusting… Read more »
Edie: Pelicans get the ballhandler/playmaker in the backcourt to form a devastating combo with Anthony Davis
New Orleans has to be drooling at the thought of a Kyrie-AD duo. That would be deadly. My best case, though, is that we move Kyrie to a team like Phoenix and get an established player (Bledsoe) and a young building block (Jackson). Bledsoe helps replace Kyrie’s scoring at PG. Then, we move Jackson to NO for Boogie (once NO realizes it isn’t a playoff team and Boogie isn’t going to sign long term) or to OKC for PG13 (once OKC realizes PG13 isn’t going to sign long-term and they still aren’t that good). That way, you get an established… Read more »
Here you go MJ http://www.espn.com/nba/tradeMachine?tradeId=yareahtk
http://www.espn.com/nba/tradeMachine?tradeId=ycwmfexx Let’s get REALLY crazy with this one. It works out at the end of August when Frazier can be traded.
You throw a pick to phoenix from either NO or the Bullets.
No way in hell Phoenix does that trade. Why would they give up Bledsoe and Warren for Gortat (does nothing for them), Frye (awful), and a mid-round pick? That’s just brutal for them.
http://www.espn.com/nba/tradeMachine?tradeId=ydcolba4
Simpler. We get Beal, Washington gets Boogie, NO gets Kyrie.
NO does it because Boogie walks, and Kyrie-AD combo would be fantastic.
Washington only does it if they prefer a dominant big man over a 3 point sharpshooter.
Cleveland does it because Beal could be a great fit next to LeBron with the prolific 3pt shooting, is the same age as Kyrie, etc.
http://www.espn.com/nba/tradeMachine?tradeId=y9zpsf2u
Super complex. Phoenix uses Bledsoe to unload Knight’s contract. Some picks head their way too. We come out way ahead, which would never happen. Boom!
The only problem I have with this is it leaves us with Rose as our starter… I don’t know if he can handle more than 20 mpg
Agreed. In a perfect world, we somehow nab Bledsoe and another very good player. I don’t know that it will happen, though.
You’re right :( I just couldn’t find a way to replace our PG in that deal and was getting ahead of myself.
Wiz get deeper, PHO gets a PG and a First, NO gets a backcourt of Rondo, Holiday, Kyrie, and Shump to go with AD, Cavs get Beal and a PG. Maybe send Shump to Phoenix? Idk. This one is down the rabbit hole, that’s for sure.
Phoenix isn’t giving up Bledsoe and Warren for a NO/WASH late first Channing Frye and Tim Frazier……
http://www.espn.com/nba/tradeMachine?tradeId=ydg8epf4
What about if you send Gortat and a First to Phoenix with Shump going there instead of NO?
Interesting. I would take it in a heartbeat. Seems like it also works for others. Call Koby.
Reports that Davis and Boogie are working together in off season so they will complement each other better next year. I could be easily wrong but I don’t see Pelicans trade Boogie atleast until trade deadline.
AGREE WITH YOU JMAY (ABOUT BILLUPS ) STFU—–NOT HELPING TRADE MATTERS —MAYBE THIS IS WHAT CHAUNCEY WANTS —-BLOW THE CAVS UP —-NOT HELPING HIS FRIEND TY
YES IF HE WAS IN FRONT OF LEBRON RIGHT NOW IT WOULD BE A MAJOR SMACK DOWN—IT WILL HAPPEN DURING THE SEASON AND THE NBA WILL HYPE IT BIG TIME ——YES HE IS GONE BEFORE CAMP OPENS BUT AGAIN KOLBY DON’T GO IN PANIC / RUSH MODE ——MAKE THE RIGHT TRADE
This seems to be Kyrie mocking LBJ. I think he is out.
https://twitter.com/KyrieTruthNLite/status/890065818754711553
He actually seems like he’s got a pretty good voice. Maybe he should take him and Shump and go play music instead…
Wow… Now he’s just being a punk.
Okay, so he’s on the way back to the US from China. So maybe it’s not a jab at Lebron/Cleveland.
Why is he wearing a Team China basketball shirt then…. he’s not excited to come to the US… He’s stirring the pot.
Chauncey Billups says he’d be alarmed if he were on the other team trying to get Kyrie. Says he feels like Kyrie wants a Russell Westbrook situation where he gets MVP even if he does not compete for titles.
Seems right.
This is my one concern about his trade value.
Chauncey Billups turned down the job, he needs to just keep his mouth shut for a while.
Yeah, he’s turning out to be a great ‘friend’ of Gilbert’s.
Haha. And don’t forget he leaked the story to ESPN that he was “lowballed” by his now “friend” Gilbert.
So Kyrie just unfollowed Lebron on social media..
? He still follow him on Twitter.
Instagram.
The Kyrie “reverse curse” for the Tribe looked in danger tonight, but he came through in the 11th.
Grand Slam Walk-Off. Means we’ll get a Grand Slam deal for KI! Or just one at Denny’s…
Thanks Hot Sauce.
Defend the Land, Cols. Defend the Land.
A little off topic here but I have a question, why are the Cavs trying to trade Kevin Love?
I’ve read many reports that the Cavs are trying to include KLove in some trade scenarios. Kyrie is the one demanding a trade not him.
Anyone?
I’m not believing anything until it happens.
Why would Phoenix want Kyrie anyways? Aren’t they in rebuild mode, not win-now mode?
Sell season tickets mainly. Also, Kyrie is the best SG in the league
Tickets. That franchise is a mess.
Brandon Knight torn ACL. Trade idea:
Cavs get:
Booker
Knight
Dudley
Chriss
Suns get:
Irving
Shumpert
Cavs take on Knight’s awful contract, and actually get a blue chipper in Booker
Also, Suns get best player in this trade. Kyrie is better SG than Booker because he can create any shot. I think Cavs should keep him unless they could somehow get a guy like Towns or A Davis. Which isnt happening
Suns aren’t trading Booker. I’m not that high on him, but he’s basically their KI.
Suns aren’t trading booker, but taking knight just to stretch pay him isn’t a bad idea.
I might be reading too much into this but I saw the Kyrie interview with Drama on YouTube. At 1 hour and 30 minutes, they ask him to give a message to his former self. What he said struck a chord with me. “The independence in which you are seeking, I appreciate the intent behind it. I know at this present moment it may feel like you are doing the right thing but you are ultimately trying to hurt yourself so you can hurt your father or you can hurt the people that want you to keep doing this. You… Read more »
Sounds like he is smoking pot.
Sounds like he was having second thoughts then a few days later someone leaked that he wanted to be traded.
Interesting… Didn’t know about this interview but I think you’re right Wes.
He ought to be having second thoughts. And now that the crap has hit the fan (dominating sports news) he better think quick about what to do next. It is not too late to say, “this is all a misunderstanding”. No one will believe it, but it is a plan.
warriorsfan is such a troll. Sorry that we didn’t have a coward named Durant and a lucky cap spike that happened at the same time the team needed to get a slight bit better.
Lebron on Durant: ” I mean, who wouldn’t want to sacrifice playing on a Golden State team or a San Antonio team or a Cleveland team when you know the ultimate result is you can actually compete for a championship.””
Keep up with your blabbering, ignoring you.
Don’t pick on Cols. We are trying to send him back to the factory to get a couple chips replaced.
Stop repeating the same crap over and over. It gets old.
Wapner is on in 3 minutes.
When Shaq and Kobe were at odds, Lakers summoned Phil Jackson. Who can Cavs turn to even if they want Lebron/Kyrie try it for one more year.
See. I try to stick up for you. Even tell Cols to chill out towards you. Then you troll us with garbage like that. SMH.
Actually that’s a legitimate question. Your issue Nate, I would imagine, is the same as mine in that there isn’t anyone to bring in. Damon Jones? I mean, it would had been Griff but now what???
How is that I am sticking up to you. I just remembered how Lakers averted and posted here ?
Again, your team signed Durant to a 73 win team because it couldn’t beat LBJ and Kyrie. Stop acting like you have sincere interest in solving our problems. Go back to your hipster front running fan base.
we are not solving anything here, just having some fun exchanging ideas. if you think Dan Gilbert looks here for solutions, then it is just you.
You are talking like warriors solving Lebron’s cavs by recruiting KD is a bad thing. That is exactly every team should try do, solve the problems and get better.
“Having fun” — that is a one-way street in this convo. I am not trying to mean. Just being honest. Cleveland fans are diehard and emotional. It’s not fun for us to talk to the fans from the team we hate most. We aren’t hipster bandwagoners who want to act enlighened and open-minded. We root for Cleveland and dislike non-Cleveland. It is what it is. I am just being honest. But it ain’t fun for us to consider random ideas from a Ws fan when we just got kicked in the gut by Kyrie.
Cheers
Actually, I would not complain if Durant leaves the Dubs and joins the Cavs.
Ok, I may have read your intent slightly wrong. I assumed you were implying the Cavs should bring in Phil to fix everything.
Kevin Durant? Isn’t that what the Warriors did when Steph was at odds with LBJ’s crack?
That is a bad analogy. In LA, they both had a reasonable reason to think they were the alpha dog. Here, Deadrick has decided to go LaVar.
I think the Phoenix deal and Dallas deal were the two best deals I saw. Sucks if the Phoenix deal is off the table.
What Dallas deal?
Smith, Barnes, and pick(s).
That’s a pretty good deal.
I fail to see how a rookie PG that went 9th overall, a fat contract, and picks is a good deal for a team trying to win a title next season.
I thought so too. Smith has an insanely high ceiling because of his athleticism and he wasn’t complete shite at defense at NC State. Barnes is a fantastic backup forward and occasional small ball 4… plus, we can get him his revenge against GSW.
Chauncey Billups can shut the eph up right about now. He’s just spouting nonsense and piling on the Cavs.
Cavs are piling on themselves, thanks.
If we walked away with Bledsoe and Josh Jackson for Kyrie, I’d call it a win. We might not be better to start the season, but if Josh Jackson is playing very good defense by the end of the season, that trade might be a net positive. It also gives us a chance to possibly nab a guy like DeMarcus Cousins at the deadline (for Jackson) if NO is going nowhere.
Bledsoe-JR-LeBron-Love-Cousins would be fun.
Brandon Knight just tore his ACL, it sounds like the suns might be in need of a one Kyrie Irving.
Twitter just reported Suns will not trade Jackson. So this trade, which was one of the ones I could stomach, seems like a long-shot.
Not interested in anything the suns have to offer without Jackson being included. Unless bledsoe is one piece of a multiteam deal
I have seen people raise the Wiggins analogy on Twitter a lot. It’s not really a good one. The Cavs had LBJ and wanted to build a “win now” roster. Thus, Wiggins was of little value to them, and their claims that they wouldn’t trade them were hollow. The Suns are the opposite — they are in the middle of a rebuild and have no incentive to give up a young guy with upside.
I hope I am wrong, but I don’t see Suns giving us Beldsoe + Jackson.
If the Cavs had kept Wiggins and somehow got Love at the Deadline, they win the finals in four.
You must not watch Wiggins play. He’s awful on defense and he’s a black hole on offense. I don’t see how he would have helped us against GS.
Kyrie is 25 and just entering his prime. I’d say trading away a total unknown who didn’t exactly dominate college basketball for a sure-fire superstar is a good deal.
The Cavs wouldn’t trade Wiggins either.
Does anyone think Popovich would want Irving on his squad knowing that he cares more about the label of “the man” than winning championships? Doesn’t seem like a Popovich guy.
Absolutely Popovich would want him. Popovich has always been surrounded by HOF type of talents. He’s on the verge of having only Leonard. Adding Irving makes them contenders.
Dead wrong. Pop does not use Prima Donnas.
Um. There’s nothing in Irving’s history that says he’s a prima donna.
You’re right. It’s his present, not his history, that makes him a primma donna.
Haha. Yeah, this is really the first primma donna move.
Maybe you should rewatch the end of Game 3: instead of doing the obvious 2 for 1, or at least getting a decent shot, KI noodled out the clock, and took a prayer shot that nicked iron.
I would almost like to see Kyrie on the Spurs precisely because Pop would ride him super hard until he maxed his potential. He could be a mix between Manu and Parker in play. Not as good as Manu but better than Parker. Pop would absolutely take Kyrie without reservations and get the best out of him.
I want to see him somehow go to the Spurs so Pop would “beat his ass” everyday.
Cleveland saves Magic Johnson from himself.

Based on FIT, I would trade Kyrie and Shump for St. Weirdo and Dragic. Would you? Would Miami?
No. That makes us worse by a lot.
I couldn’t imagine a worse trade other than giving him away from free.
Miami does that deal faster than any team has ever made a deal in the history of the NBA.
Those new uniforms Elijah re-treated are gross. Kind of remind me of Browns new uniforms. Why do we need to change? Why not go back to Price era? So much churn versus Celtrics, Bulls, Lakers….sort of like our front office

And, be sure to read the enclosed link to how Kyrie flubbed away game 3. I had managed to forget that. Was Lue sitting on his hands there?
No. Irving screwed that up. Don’t blame Lue for Irving’s mistake.
I agree with most of this: http://deadspin.com/just-what-in-the-damn-hell-is-kyrie-irving-thinking-1797234691
Great article. I wish Ky’s dad would read it and smack his son across the back of the head…
Yeah. He seems pretty doltish.
This describes how i feel about Irving. Kyrie is totally delusional if he thinks he can carry a team.
Burneko is my favorite NBA writer. So good. Loved his take down of Hinkie.
Pretty solid article. At the end of the day, maybe the dude just wants to live somewhere that isn’t Cleveland? He’s 25, he’s entering his prime, he has a ring, he has a lot of other accolades – maybe he just wants to go somewhere warmer? Although, putting Minnesota on your list of preferred destinations kind of nixes that idea.
All of it, actually. Under no trade to any of the 29 other teams does Kyrie go to a better situation.
Lost in all this is that it’s Kyrie Irving’s fault this is happening. Asking for a trade from a team that has been largely the same the last 2.5 years and gone to three straight Finals while getting paid the max and allowed to do what he does best, score and play lights out in the playoffs is really dumb.
Can a Kyrie for Mike Conley trade happen? Conley has the Ohio State connection, and has almost comparable stats to Kyrie. Maybe Memphis would have to add a pick too.
Memphis won’t make this trade.
They should. Kyrie is better, cheaper, younger and they need someone with high usage.
Cheaper, younger and on par. Conley would kill the cavs’ cap.
Nate, when you say “kill the cavs’ cap”, in what way? Would they lose some exception that I don’t know about? We are over the cap and will be for the foreseeable future. What’s the different here? We’d have to match salaries (for the most part), so it would likely be a Kyrie + Shump trade.
Yep. This is correct. We’d be capped out either way.
The NBA makes it increasingly difficult to operate over the tax apron. In addition to the sign and trade issues, there is simply the issue of operating that far over the cap adding $50-$100 million in luxury tax every year. It simply is not sustainable long term. Eventually, even gilbert won’t pay it.
Not sure I want that albatross contract. Hopefully could trade for some younger players under better team control.
Sooooooo….Billups said he knew the Kyrie problem during his interviews. Which means, had our front office been alive, we could have traded Irving for Paul George. I have to believe that the Pacers, even hating the idea of trading in conference, wouldn’t have been able to turn down Irving. What a complete clusterf.
All reports are that the Cavs knew on July 7. They had hints he may be unhappy but they didn’t know he was going to demand a trade.
Those reports are backtracking now. Billups on Twitter said he didn’t know of the trade demands, just knew situation was iffy.
Right. The organization knew he was unhappy, but didn’t know he was going to demand a trade.
Source?
A trade they had in place for George was for Kyrie. The Pacers nixed it.
Wow. Didn’t know that. Can’t believe the pacers preferred to spite themselves with Oladipo.
My guess is that herb Simon nixed it, and wanted him out of the conference, so they took the best deal they could get out west.
man, I miss Delly
Last we saw him he was losing his playing time to an ancient and injured Mo Williams and Dahntay Jones in the 2016 Finals.
10 minutes till Wapner.
Maybe that is when Lue should have gotten a pink slip.
So we’ll played.
No. I’m being completely serious. All of this crap, I really miss that guy.
Me too, man. Me too. My all-time favorite player on any team ever.
Gross. Lue benching him in the Finals is probably the move that put us over the top.
No doubt. The key to victory was the Shump-Mo Williams backcourt in Game 7. (Mega eye roll.)

Hmmm.. if I’m Kyrie I’m really paying attention.
This article makes me somewhat excited to trade Kyrie, and reminds me that he’s a niche teammate. I’d love to swap Irving for Westbrook, but the Thunder would never do that.
AMICO HOOPS HAS A GOOD ARTICLE ON THE PRESSURE ALTMAN NOW FACES
IF KOBY CAN PULL OFF THE RIGHT TRADE ( AND HE / CAVS HAVE LEVERAGE TO DO SO ) BELIEVE WE CAN ACTUALLY BE BETTER THIS YEAR WITHOUT KY ——IT ALL DEPENDS WHO WE GET IN THE TRADE —WE WILL NOW FIND OUT HOW OTHER GM’S VALUE KYRIE —-DO WE SEE HIM AS A BETTER PLAYER THAN HE ACTUALLY IS EVALUATED AT
No. We don’t overvalue Kyrie. Elite PGs who are young and on a great contract who can just get buckets are generally never available.
KING JAMES!!!

Good. Hopefully they can coexist for another shot at a ring.
This made me spit my coffee out.

this entire situation of this organization is nauseating
I watched youtube highlights of Bledsoe and Kyrie last night. Was depressing. Kyrie is so good.
I like Bledsoe, and would be happy with him + Jackson + pick, but it is going to painful to lose Kyrie. He is the most skilled offensive player I have ever watched.
Yep. Zach Lowe was discussing how Irving is so great at getting buckets that it’s going to be impossible to replace him.
Yep.
I’m so mad at Kyrie. Rose is a good backup PG. But he’ll be terrible as a starter.
Yes. He could OK with a secondary lineup of Korver, Smith, Frye and Green. But his inability to space hurts first unit a lot.
Question – which would you rather have – A Phoenix 1st round pick or Justise Winslow (in a vacuum)
Great question. I guess a Phoenix first. But I’m far from solid about this.
Kellen WInslow the First
Well played.
Phoenix first rounder. Justice doesn’t look like he can score at all.
Yeah. I’ve been racking my brain around this. All things being equal I think I agree, but a draft pick has so much “unknown” that having a guy you already know (to a degree) might be more practical. It’s a tough one. I think Miami could be a third team trade partner if Phoenix moves a pick to them instead of us. No reports on that, just working out the details.
If Altman learned a lot under Griff, it’s that you have to integrate pieces sooner rather than later. I think it’d be evident that if he did, a deal would be sooner than later.
Yeah. I either want the trade before the season or by December at the latest. Otherwise just keep Kyrie and hope it works out. Kyrie is so valuable as a scorer that getting fair value for him is going to be really hard.
I think if the past is any indication–be it Grant, Griff, Altman, or Gilbert himself–the playoff iteration of this team will NOT look as it currently does. Rose’s signing cannot be a bad thing–he can actually play himself into a tradable asset, given his lithe contract; given his never-evolved reckless style of play, he might not make it through a season anyway. Calderon can shoot the three (40.9% career), so at least he can play some meaningful minutes as a backup. Agreed that neither can move this team past the Dubs–and I was not excited about Green’s signing either. Can… Read more »
Character? Durant proved he was a coward. He Choked the WCF away and joined the team that beat him.
Thirteen minutes till Judge Wapner.
I don’t think Kyrie is here to start the season. If the rumors are true and he doesn’t want to play with LeBron anymore, no need to force him into it. Trade him now and get the new guys acclimated asap. Like I mentioned in the previous post, worst thing the Cavs can do is wait till December to trade him. Having 1/2 new guys, one probably a PG, come in mid season will undoubtedly throw the chemistry off. Why risk it? My wish, if ever possible, is to sit LeBron and Kyrie down and try to work it out.… Read more »
LeBron got past Gilbert’s letter. He can get past this. What has LeBron ever done that makes you think he’s not mentally mature?
I think LeBron’s ego won’t let him get past the idea that someone doesn’t want to play with him.
JRL. I don’t see what this is based on. LeBron is pretty much a model teammate. Works harder than anyone, stays out of off court trouble.
Agree with Cols. Why do you think that? You made that up just to say something crappy.
I mean, it’s only my opinion, its not like I’m tweeting it as facts from “my sources”.
Sorry Col but I see him as someone more interested in his legacy (ego based?) than anything else. Imo he didn’t come to Cleveland because he wanted to come back home, he did because a billionaire begged him to and he saw he had a great shot at making the finals, while not looking like a punk for going to yet another team. Now you have LeBron knowing his time is running short, specially with his quest to pass MJ in rings, and his best sidekick telling him, “I don’t want to play with you anymore”. Now, considering that almost… Read more »
Only make the trade early if you seem to be getting top dollar. What you want is a competition for him, which might take awhile. Of course, there is a chance of overplaying it. Recall the sad sack Kings last year trading Boogie, and then the GM sez: we had a much better deal last week. What a moron!
Sure, it the trade is late or does not happen.
Your point “ask the Warriors not named Durant if they felt marginalized last year” is spot on. Everyone one on a super team that can win it all is marginalized. That is why Westbrook and Hardin will never win it all. Those guys cannot be marginalized, they fire away.
Why do we think Rose is a bad person? Because he was found not liable in a civil suit?
Have you actually read the details of the case?
Yes, but he was acquitted
I’m speaking of the things he admitted.
He was not acquitted. He was found “not liable” as it was a civil case.
Left his team. Didn’t show up for a game with zero notice. No one knew where he was. Couldn’t pick up a phone as he was flying back to Chicago
This won’t happen on a LeBron team.
Tell that to Delonte West
That was before LeBron became LEBRON the Finals whisperer.
Unless you know something we don’t about Rose, you can’t compare him (or anyone) to Delonte, giving the fact Delonte is known to have bipolar issues.
Why are people so against this? Rose averaged 18&5 on 48% shooting… thats better than any PG we have signed in last 3 years. Not to mention we got him at 2 mil/1 year. Some Cavs fans annoy me with how much negativity they love to generate. I understand this off season has really sucked, but tbh Jeff Green and D rose are solid pick ups.
It’s not about his overall effectiveness. It’s about what the Cavaliers need in a PG. Assists, defense, shooting. DRose has struggled with at LEAST 2 out of 3 of those every year for the past 7 years. Then you add in who he is as a person and people are less than psyched about it. Few people here don’t realize that with or without KI or DRose, the Cavs will likely make it to the finals for the 4th straight year.
I would think Rose on defense would play better than Kyrie. Yes we would miss Kyries scoring but I think cavs should consider splitting Calderon and Roses minutes, if Kyrie is gone. I feel Rose can more than hold his own when it comes time to play Warriors or anyone of that caliber.
I thought the same thing until I heard the alarm raised around here. I went back and watched DRose from the past few years. I’m not sure he is all that much better than Kyrie. He can’t stay in front of opposing guards anymore, he gets stuck on screens, he falls asleep playing team D, these are all the same Kyrie problems. He’s lost the step or two he had when he was on Thibs defensive stud teams. Even then, his primary role was to funnel opposing guards baseline rather than offer any appreciable on-ball defense.
Amico said Rose is averaging 29 ppg vs GSW since 2015 (or it could have been 2014).
He can’t shoot threes, is not a great offensive quarterback, and plays lousy defense. Yes, he drives well, which would be great if this were 2007.
He is exactly what was needed LAST year to create some points while LeBron was on the bench. Who knows about this year. He should not be starting anyway, because he is fragile and you really just need him for the playoffs.
Regardless of what we ultimately get back for Kyrie, we can’t forget that this team currently has one 1st Team All-NBA player, two current All-Stars, and now two former MVP’s on it. That is better than what ANY other team in the East can say. I take comfort in knowing that this team as currently constructed (even excluding Kyrie) is STILL better talent wise than the group Lebron first dragged to the Finals against the Spurs. Hell, it is a better group than the one we took the floor with against the Warriors in the Finals the first go round!… Read more »
If nothing else, the regular season should be interesting to watch again. If DRose is fighting for his NBA career maybe that will mean more people on the team will put their “try-hard” pants on before May….
Great idea. Then Rose will be injured before the playoffs. When you have a sure fire playoff team, going full tilt during the regular season is totally dumb, because you are asking for injuries and people being worn out. For example, consider the 1954 Indians, who won 111 games, best ever for a 154 game season. But the Yankees won 110, and the Tribe had to go full tilt. They had to win the last game to go the World Series (this was before playoffs). Players were hurt and worn out, and the Giants won in four. Actually, the Giants… Read more »
The world is full of values that are not absolute… There is a difference between going full tilt game in and game out for 82 games (See 2015-16 GSW) and trying just a bit harder than the bull**** that the Cavs trotted out for 30 or so games last season. Even LeBron said that he wished they would have taken the regular season just a bit more seriously… Clearly my preference is for our whole team to be injured and us to lose in the first round of the playoffs because I’m just THAT kind of Cavs fan /s… zzzzzz
AGREE WITH JRL FOR THE PRICE TO AQUIRE ROSE —BELIEVE IT IS A STEAL—–SEE WHAT KIND OF MAGIC KOBY CAN WORK WITH THE KY TRADE —-PATIENCE IS THE KEY —–LET ALL THE TEAMS LINE UP WHO ARE SALVATING TO GET KYRIE AND BID AGAINST EACH OTHER —-
This is sad. Everything is just sad. I just can’t find any direction for this team right now.
This Rose signing moves the needle nothing. He still thinks he can get back being a star. Hell no. Doesn’t matter if he’s signed in exchange of peanuts, he’s still a waste of roster spot. With that being said I don’t expect DRose to be still here by December or January..
So D. Rose is a waste of a spot but Felder, JJ, Dantay weren’t/aren’t? Out of all of them, which guy can solidly give you 14+ ppg?
JJ was leadership. Dahntay and Felder were worthless.
With JJ in Phoenix, I’m not sure he wants Shump after seeing first hand… though to get Kyrie, maybe.
Okay, so two out of the three people I mentioned were not needed in order for us to get to the finals. Now replace one of them with D. Rose. How don’t we get better? How many other backup PG’s were available in free agency that matched Rose’s output? And I’m not even mentioning the money because I don’t give two shits about Gilbert saving/expending money. I get the background stuff is screwed up and I wish it wasn’t, but the league must had looked into it and realized he was cleared. I can’t really say much else about it… Read more »
Yes. Rose as a backup PG is one of the better ones around.
I don’t see Rose signing up to be a back up PG. In his mind he’s still D.Rose and he’s only 28. This is the perfect opportunity to prove he can still start in this league. Now if this fails, then we’ll probably see him off the bench.
I consider Rose a net negative and a sign that this team is abandoning culture and character as requisites for excellence.
Having been a boy scout, I am glad to help you with the directions:
1. Watch Kyrie lead a 30 win team in scoring.
2. Then, just follow LeBron to the finals.
You don’t need MapQuest for this.
Nice pickup by the Cavs. Rose is a good backup PG who can be used in a starting role if needed. Sucks that Kyrie wants to leave. Would had loved to see him next to Rose for stretches during games.
LEBRON’S CAMP SAYING ” IF KY WAS IN FRONT OF HIM (LEBRON ) RIGHT NOW HE WOULD WUP HIS ASS “—VERY UPSET THAT HE GOT HIS NAME DRAGGED INTO THE KY TRADE RUMORS—–WITH THIS IN MIND I AM BETTING THE TRADE IS MADE BEFORE CAMP STARTS ———AND THEN WE WILL HAVE THE BIG BUILD UP ( SHAQ/ KOBY——–DURANT / WESTBROOK ) LEBRON / KY FOR THE NBA TO HYPE —–ADAM SILVER LOVING ALL THE OFF SEASON ATTENTION THE NBA IS GETTING
Who else but Screamin’ A. Smith with that kind of report…
worst off-season ever.
Ahhhh I think you mean the off-season after The Decision…
Ouch
One thing Griff did: valued three point shooting. Altman has signed three guys who are poor to terrible three point shooters.
Can’t disagree, but were there better three point shooters out there that could have been signed?
I looked like there were very few moves that the Cavs could make, so we are judging Altman’s early performance on very small deals. Then the KI bombshell hits. Now Altman will be making a deal bigger than many GM’s ever do. Sure hope he gets it right.
Good Luck Koby!
Yes. Tyler Ennis, Ilyasova, Beasley, Derrick Williams,Deron Williams…
I love that you think any of those guys moves the needle at all.
You are the master of misquotes and poor reading comprehension. The question was about better three point shooters.
Nate, I don’t think you get it. The idea this offseason was to get more athletic. The Cavs have easily accomplished this while also retaining the three point shooting that has made them a prolific three point team.
Michael Beasley is better at everything than Jeff Green and more athletic. Derrick Williams, more athletic. Tyler Ennis 22 and not a mess of knee problems: hence, more athletic. Everyone: more athletic than Jose Calderon. Should I keep going, or are you done losing at your own argument?
You’ve lost the plot when you are thinking that getting Derrick Williams or Michael Beasley are going to save the Cavs.
You come on a thread about three point shooting, hijack it with your BS, then change the subject next when I prove you wrong, twice. If you’re going to be a troll at least try to have some semblance coherence and an ability to stay on topic. It’s like arguing with a 7th grader with Voltron on in the background.
If that is your criteria, you can include 10000 slow unathletic guys playing for small colleges, adult rec leagues, and high schools who are great three point shooters.
My point is that they’re equal or better players by many analytics methods and raw stats than the guys the Cavs signed. Plus, better three point shooters.
Mbah Moute, a great defender+3pt % 39%+2 mils.
I don’t think Calderon fits this description. In fact, he’s probably been one of the better 3pt shooters of the past decade. Agree that Green and Rose can’t shoot 3s worth a crap.
kyrie gone this year and LeBron next year. This will be d rose team and will be our new alpha dog. Gotta give it to the brilliant minds of our FO. Hooray for the dawning of our new era…
Don’t think LeBron’s leaving, actually. Feel like Kyrie leaving will galvanize this team.
Face it, Cleveland is on FIRE! And not in a good way. This team has completely imploded.
Get a Grip!! They are the team to beat in the EC. That is 14 other clubs with little chance.
There’s an alternate universe where Kevin Durant isn’t a coward and either doesn’t choke in the 2016 WCF or stays with the thunder. In that universe we just beat the warriors in 5 games and all the talk is how lucky the warriors are that Irving and Love were injured in 2015 or else it would be three in a row. The Warriors ar flailing trying to find guys who can match up with the Cavs Death Star. Irving doesn’t want out and the Cavs gear up for four in a row. I want to live in that universe.
I like it, but Irving would still want out. He wants to be the “focus”.
Putting aside the off court stuff, it helps to have another guy who can make plays with the ball in his hands. Not a good shooter from deep, but very good from midrange & elite in terms of points per drive & points in the paint. Plus, the team should be used to playing with a ball dominant PG. He did play for Thibs, so there has to be some defensive know how. Hopefully out of New York & for a cotender helps his want to. No matter how the Kyrie thing shakes out, I think this helps. Low risk.… Read more »
Rose is one of the better backup PGs. And having him Cedi and Green off the bench gives us a much more athletic look.
If the reports are true on the Suns being interested in a Bledsoe/Jackson/Pick for Kyrie trade, Altman should push for a Shump Dudley swap as well.
Also, without Kyrie I think the Cavs aren’t going to try and match the Warriors in style, more like a slower, halfcourt LEBRON centric style of play with multiple pick and roll and surgical swings of the ball.
Agreed. Going toe to toe with GSW in an open game is crazy. No one can outgun Steph + Klay + KD. Plus KD & Klay are very good defenders & so is Iggy. Green is DPOY.
They didn’t defend very well against the Cavs. After game one (the only game the warriors defended well) the Cavs put up a 120 offensive rating.
Yes. Get us Dudley in that deal and I’m OK with it.
I like the Suns deal the best. Or Miami. Philly has pieces. And I’m a Middleton fan.
If we offload Kyrie, Shump, Deron, & the Jonses & add Bledsoe, Jackson, Rose, Green, Cedi, + a pick & maybe another player, I think that is a win.
Even if they don’t dump shump, as I have stated previously, I think that is till the best trade we could get. When Nate brought up a Bledsoe trade a few days ago, I was like I don’t want Bledsoe without something else. Then I was like, but wait, JJ too and now we are talking. I would be psyched for any deal involving JJ and Bledsoe. I think Jackson has the potential to have the most impact out of any rookie with two way all star/all defensive potential. I loved him at Kansas and I loved him in summer… Read more »

Three teamed that gets us Bledsoe and Middleton.
Each gets half of Kyrie.
With Calderon’s age and Rose’s injury history, it might not be a bad idea to have the pair.
https://twitter.com/oldseaminer/status/889676716381282306
How good of a defender is Bledsoe?
Pretty good. Reputation waned in Phoenix but that team isn’t great defensively.
Thanks Nate. I’ve always heard he’s solid defensively. That would be a nice change
