From Distance: Formerly “The Point-Fourward” (An Ode to Zach Lowe)
2017-09-13Four points I’m thinking about the NBA…
1. Any fan of basketball, or sports writing in general, should be sure to follow the work of Zach Lowe. He is the most balanced, comprehensive sportswriter and podcaster currently out there. Lowe was one of the first NBA writers to fully utilize GIF video work to illustrate and analyze basketball play-action. He is concise, witty, educational, and amusingly self-deprecating. I am a better writer and smarter basketball guy for having read him.
If I have any criticism of Lowe’s outstanding work, it would be that he tends to qualify his very well-thought-out takes with “am I crazy?”. No, Zach. You are most certainly not crazy. Yes, I understand that in an era of blowhard know-it-alls (or no-it-alls), Lowe is only using the phrase to illustrate his openness to the ideas of others. His humility forces him to mitigate his genius in an effort to appease his partner and open discussion. It’s an honorable notion. I just wish he didn’t employ that conversation device with such regularity.
He knows things. We need the people who actually know things to say them with certainty and without mitigation. (Un)fortunately for the world, most of the true experts in a field only become experts because of their constant desire for new information. That desire forces an expert to ask new questions at every turn. It leads a less curious person to conclude that said expert actually doesn’t know anything at all. Questioning is the source of all knowledge.
Lowe is right to do so. He is a good podcast partner precisely because be opens the door for his guest’s opinion. But, perhaps he could offer that same latitude without casually, if seemingly innocuously, questioning his own sanity.
2. That detail aside, I very much appreciate Lowe’s courage of conviction and his decency as a human(to be clear, the “am I crazy” thing certainly isn’t an indication of a lack of courage. It is that very strength that allows the question). It is apparent that Lowe appreciates the good fortune that has brought him success. He understands that his substantial talent and intellect aren’t the only things that have allowed him to live his dream. It comes through in his writing and especially in his podcasts. This is a man to respect both as a creator and person.
For that reason, I would like to retire the title “The Point-Fourward”. It was the title of Zach Lowe’s column when he was still at Sports Illustrated. I’m not sure exactly how it began on our fine site, but the title has served us well. It has been a regular column for quite some time, having been penned by a few different talented writers. I’ve very much enjoyed the flexibility and exposure it affords.
Still, I have always been a little uncomfortable writing under its heading. Since sportswriters don’t have jersey numbers to hang in the rafters, this is about as close as I could come. After wearing the jersey for awhile, I think it’s time to forge a new identity.
“From Distance”. As I live in Berlin, I am shooting from serious range over here. Regardless of what the NBA ultimately decides, I think I am entitled to an extra point this far beyond the line. I’ll still break the column down in the same way: four different points about the NBA. Really, it will only be the name that changes. And rest assured, as the season gets going again, you will read less of my occasionally prolix philosophical discourse and more of my basketball analysis. Don’t worry, dad. I won’t completely abandon the former. I am your son after all.
3. With that out of the way, I’d like to examine Cedi Osman’s potential on the 2017-2018 Cleveland Cavaliers using Alfred North Whitehead’s conception of reality(okay, just a little more for my dad). Very basically, Whitehead challenges the idea that matter in the universe is generally a fixed entity. He believes that all things are subject to process and context, thus any specific bit of matter is transient by its very nature. Whitehead would warn us about the “fallacy of misplaced concreteness. Things are not in a place. They are relative to their surroundings and always fluid and changing.
Yep, we are still in the off-season. Anyway, what I’m getting at is that Cedi Osman has never played basketball with LeBron James in the NBA. He has never been as old as he is right now. Et cetera, et cetera. We really don’t know how this is going to go down. Nevertheless, the talent that does seem to be the easiest to project from league to league is not rebounding or shot-making.
It’s general personality. A process of processing information in relationship to other processes(basketball). Osman plays his tail off on every possession. He will not be Manu Ginoboli. He won’t be Christian Eyenga. In the most obvious sentence yet, Cedi Osman will be Cedi Osman.
The most macro aspect to his skill-set as a player should be the thing that we primarily judge him by. I love his work ethic. I’m a fan of his physical tools. His shooting percentages don’t really bother me either way. Osman will soon be in a context that is beyond foreign to him. I expect the best.
4. Speaking of best, C:tB favorite, C.J. McCollum is unsurprisingly not listed as the best player in the NBA in recent off-season media rankings. Nor was C:tB anti-favorite Carmelo Anthony. Looking at the list so far, it isn’t surprising that multiple players are more than a little annoyed.
In general, the rookies are hilariously overrated. Lonzo Ball shouldn’t be in the top 100, let alone number 63. Most rookies are terrible defenders. Ball is likely to be an all-time train wreck on that end of the floor. Carmelo was straight-up mad(adult language alert). C.J. was funny.
We need to start ranking these weak ass journalist. With descriptions of their strengths, weaknesses and ability to make up "sources"
— CJ McCollum (@CJMcCollum) September 12, 2017
While I am amused by the player’s reactions to a seemingly fluffy ranking, it is important to remember that such things do affect the lives of these players. These haphazard rankings that are clearly done on the fly can have huge consequences in contract negotiations and trades. No, it isn’t as though an agent would directly cite his client’s media ranking as a bargaining chip. A GM wouldn’t justify a trade by announcing he got ESPN’s 13th best player.
However, the rankings do give us insight as to what the “average NBA person” thinks of these players. A player’s popularity absolutely plays into contract negotiations and trades. Kyrie Irving isn’t the same entity without “Uncle Drew”. “The Beard” gives James Harden power. To a lesser extent, being ranked above Carmelo Anthony and host of other better players gives Lonzo Ball power while directly taking it from those below him.
For that reason, I’ll shy away from off-season rankings and error on the side of Verdi and Leibniz. It’s seems the prudent thing to do. It’s either that or cover the pickup game exploits of “Hoodie Melo” or the Warriors’ jersey sponsorship deal with Rakuten. Am I crazy? Eh, Go Tribe!

There isn’t. That is why the tie is not a part if the official W/L records.
I gotcha! It was a different time and I understand why they have the longest streak.
Just think of it as one 17 inning game, if that helps. 8 + a 9 inning OT.
TRIBE HAS 21 WINS IN LAST 21 DAYS———BROWNS HAVE 21 WINS IN THE LAST 2,125 DAYS——-THERE IS ALWAYS HOPE !!
Awesome article man, and kudos for retiring the name.
I’m beyond excited for Cedi. I’ve been pretty critical of David Griffin burning through assets, but Cedi might have been the best move that he was actually responsible for. If he really is a 6’8” Delly, he’s going to fit right in. Cleveland has a lengthy history with embracing foreigners with their mania over Z, Andy, and Delly, and Cedi is going to be a the next fan favorite. I’d buy his jersey if they weren’t so damn ugly.
I can do a Zach Lowe impersonation :
With LeBron’s all-time passing (I’d put him in the top dozen crosscourt passers ever), and Isaiah Thomas’ herky-jerky movements on and off thr ball, the Cavs will come up funky ways of making their offense even better than ever before.
I could do more clever, I’m just tired
@Warriors Fan: SI also put Derrick Favors in top 30 last year due to overrating certain aspects of the game. I don’t necessarily disagree with you, but these guys frequently outsmart themselves in an attempt to seem smarter than the average fan
Ha. Chisenhall stuffed the ball from today’s final out in his back pocket as soon as he got up off from making the catch. So there’s at least one guy on the team thinking about the streak.
One think I like about rankings, it seems like they have put winning as part of equation. Melo, Wiggins, H Barnes all outside 50. Versatile players and defense first players are getting higher ranking with not much stats to show, players like Bev, Iguodala etc..
So what have those rookies won? Rankings are just clickbait. I could do better in 10 minutes.
Terry Pluto talkin sense on Cavs trade. Video clip.
Is there a link I cant see?
You have to google pluto & click his twitter feed. He posts links to all his stuff. He basically said the goal is to win a title. The assets in the trade were the pick 1st, Crowder 2nd, IT 3rd. More likely we trade our pick than Brooklyn’s. He doesn’t care about ITs health as long as he can go by February. Though admits to some worry about the hip.
Here is a pretty good article on the strange duality of the tie/non-tie games in baseball & how they are counted. Or not counted in the standings. Yes in players stats, but not in the standing (at least, for most of the existence of the league). Long read, but pretty good stuff.
http://ordinary-gentlemen.com/2015/12/28/tie-games-in-baseball/
Or do the math. 86-66 for a win PCT of .566 rounded. If the ties were part of the official record, 86/155 =.555. 86/152 =.566.
2 days. 17 imnings. 1 result. But the stats from the first ‘game’ count. A game started for each pitcher each day. 1 win/loss. No ties in the STANDINGS.
Tribe have the AL record. Not MLB or pro-baseball (1916 Giants or 1875 Red Stockings).
Jason, you’re incorrect. The 1916 Giants have a tie game listed in the standings: https://www.baseball-reference.com/teams/NYG/1916-schedule-scores.shtml
So they won 12, had a tie game, then went on to win 14. Still impressive though.
No Arch, you are wrong. I swear, the homerism is affecting your brains. I already walked you through this in my post. Read it. You site the game by game results. Look at the record: 86-66. No ties. AS I SAID BEFORE, they have to call the ‘game’ that triggers the replay something. Just look at the standings. Yeesh. It is not like Elias knows what they are talking about..
Okay well regardless if it’s listed in the overall standings or not, the fact is that they had to replay a game that ended in a tie. That doesn’t tell me that they had a 26 game winning streak. I don’t care what you think of Elias, I’ve heard a lot of experts refute there numbers, who aren’t Tribe fans. But I guess we can’t disagree with you or we are homers.

Tom Hamilton said at the time there was no way that was intentional, and that is why the catcher was having a long talk with the ump right after it happened. And Hamilton tends to be a bit of a hot head when it comes to suggesting people are throwing at players.
The Fox Broadcast thought it was odd, but didn’t claim it was intentional. I think that’s why Ausmus was upset.
Given that that
1. It was the first pitch to the new catcher who probably did not have a chance to discuss the signs, and
2. The pitcher was way wild and having trouble throwing any strikes,
I am going to go with “probably an accident”.
If it had been a Boston team (Red SignStealers, Celtic HideTheInjuries, P-Deflators) I would guess the opposite, because those guys are dirt balls.
Actually, the Tigers played hard, and I give them credit for that.

I hope Lakers fans are freaking out about this.
I don’t want to jinx things, but would anyone want to give your prediction for how long it can go? Maybe everyone should keep it a secret to avoid bad luck!
I fear the jinx. KC is in WC contention. Tough to sweep them. We are at home. Tomlin goes tomorrow. KC has a RHP on the mound. After that they have Vargas (LHP) vs Bauer. I think we are better vs righties (Bruce, Santana, Chisenhall).
An odd thing about that 1916 NYG team, the 26 game streak was all at home. 31 game homestand. Earlier that year, they had a 17 game win streak, entirely on the road. And still were only 86-66 on the year.
21 in a row. Unbelievable.
If you had had a 65% chance of winning every game, .65^21 = .00018, or, less than 2 out of 10,000 times.
That is about how often a 65% winning team goes on a 21 game winning streak!
As a Reds fan, great to see Bruce contributing… I hope Cleveland gets the Cubs in the WS and absolutely demolishes them… at least that’s the ideal for this Reds fan lol.
I was trying to pick 25 and it is tough. How many pitchers? 10-12 I would think. You need two lefties, so Olson has to make it. That makes 9 gimmies: Kluber, Carrasco, Clevinger, & Bauer (starters) + Allen, Miller, Shaw, Goody, & Olson = 9. For the next 1-3 spots? Tomlin, Salazar, & Merritt for long guys. Otero, McAllister, Smith & Armstrong the other relievers. In the field: Lindor (SS), Ramirez (2B/3B), Encarnacion (DH), Santana (1B), & Bruce (RF) all must start. That’s 5. Brantley if healthy is 6. Perez & Gomes to catch. Jackson vs lefties in CF.… Read more »
Kipnis is very likely to be healthy, Brantley maybe. It would be a bummer if Brantley misses all the fun two years in a row. I would totally keep Urshela before Diaz. I think Jose can be an emergency catcher, he played EVERYWHERE in the DR, and I would not be surprised if he can pitch and run the fireworks display. Maybe he should be running the Cavs, too!
After the season, I am going to try to hire Jose to take over the job of arguing draft picks with Arch. I’m sure he will be good at it.
“‘LEGAL AGE ” WIN STREAK——GO TRIBE—–WINNNNNNNDIANS—YOU THE MAN ARCH—KEEP IT GOING !!!
Blackjack today. .22 caliber streak tomorrow. Unbelievable. KC is in the hunt for a WC. This series should be intense.
For what it is worth, the 1916 Giants streak is legit at 26 (as ‘tie’ games were replayed from the beginning). Closest analogue would be a Tribe game getting called with a tie score tomorrow & then finished the next day with a Tribe win. Anyone here think that would stop the streak? Elias has this one right. Also, the 1875 Boston Red Stockings (National Association) won 26 in a row en route to going 71-8. Not a typo.
Got some more homestand. Lets ride this out.
Is that ‘tie’ for the Giants included in the 26 count? As in, the Giants played 26 games instead of 25?
No, 27. 26 scheduled & the replay following the ‘tie’ the next day as part of a doubleheader. Baseballref has it if you guys want to look it up.
I don’t think so. I think the game was tied after 8 when the rain came. Because this game was NOT finished or replayed, it is actually a TIE. Thus you can say the 1916 Giants had an UNBEATEN streak of 27 games, and two winning streaks that added up to 26 games, surrounding a tie game.
Still legit.
2 legit 2 quit?
There were no ‘tie’ games in the standings. Just wins & losses. If a game was called, they replayed it from the start. The stats counted. Today we would start it up from when it got called & wrap all the stats into those 9 innings. Back then they just started from scratch (new Starter, etc). It is a statistical quandry. Yes, is was actually 27 ‘games’ played. Or 26, as Elias looks at it. The Giants were 86-66 but played 155 games (3 so called ties). The tie forces a replay so in essence there are 2 games (2… Read more »
A related thing. Up until overtime was introduced into the NFL (when?), there were plenty of tie games, but they DID NOT count in the standings. Standings were bases on winning percentage. For example, back in the 12 game season days, if a team went 8 – 2 – 2, the 2 ties were ignored, and the team was .800 (8 wins, 2 loses).
It will be tough to set the 25 man playoff roster. I think it absolutely has to include Urshela (the “one man highlight reel” – Tom Hamilton). Having an all world infield is a huge advantage. I would also favor keeping Allan unless Zimmer is back. Having ultra speed in CF is another huge advantage.
Raoul, if you go with Allen as speed in CF for Zimmer, do you take 14 Field players + 11 pitchers? Or does someone in my top 13 get left out (Lindor, Ramirez, Encarnacion, Santana, Bruce, Brantley, Gomes, Perez, Jackson, Kipnis, Chisenhall, Diaz, Urshela)?
The Indians have won 100 games only twice in their history: 1954 and 1995. It’s certainly within reach now: They need to win 10 of their final 16 games.
A lot are at home, yes? 10 or 11 I think.

Who knew Tom Hamilton was so funny. Please, no one tell Team Trump or they’ll just try to use the photo again…
I’m sure Breitbart is still using this photo on a daily basis promoting Trump rally’s.
Detroit is just beaming everyone now.
So now Detroit looks to be head hunting the umpire’s?!
To me, the argument that David Aldridge makes (see below) is incredibly unfair. Even setting aside these roles that the media has in determining salaries with their all-star and all-NBA selections, they completely ignore the human factor. They are making the same mistake that we, as fans, often make. These athletes, while professionals, are still human. NO ONE would enjoy being ranked below someone who has never even held the position yet. Lonzo Ball being ranked 63 without having ever played a single game is completely ridiculous.
If you go to his Twitter page, he ultimately says he’s on board with having them rank journalists.
Ausmus and McCann get tossed!

Ugh Clevenger gives up a run in the first. Tribe down 0-1.
These players have every right to be incredulous about these rankings. Ben actually underrates the media’s impact on player salaries when he says, “it is important to remember that such things do affect the lives of these players. These haphazard rankings that are clearly done on the fly can have huge consequences in contract negotiations and trades. No, it isn’t as though an agent would directly cite his client’s media ranking as a bargaining chip. I see the “fallacy of misplaced concreteness” and its fallacy cousins as an enormous problem, especially given how often we slap data on something to make it appear less abstract.
“reducing the originally rich phenomenon to the naked suggestions of that name abstractly taken, treating it as a case of “nothing but” that concept, and acting as if all the other characters from out of which the concept is abstracted were expunged. Abstraction, functioning in this way, becomes a means of arrest far more than a means of advance in thought.” – William James in “The Meaning of Truth”
Lowe has grown on me. I’ve always appreciated his passion, but he used to not in any way be “concise” as you described him. Still, I’ve learned a lot reading and listening to him. I also appreciate his emotional instincts that come across in his podcasts “here’s an easy way to not get suspended for kicking people in the nuts….DON’T KICK PEOPLE IN THE NUTS.” His Draymond rants during “Our Finals” were top-notch. Following my rant from last night, ESPN can do whatever the hell it wants to do with respect to personnel. I thought they made a mistake letting… Read more »
Most of the talkers on ESPN spend more time yammering about movies and TV and each other than sports. This is probably a good thing, because half of them are totally clueless about anything.

This. It’s all about them “clicks”.
Not too common to see Alfred North Whitehead appear in the sports world. Is your father a philosopher? I am one of the few who has actually (tried to) read at least one page of Russell and Whitehead’s “Principia Mathematica”, the “greatest math book that has never been read all the way through by anyone”. After about 400 pages of preparation, they finally prove that 1 + 1 = 2, in a footnote. Some of the ideas (such as “lambdas”) recently added to the top programming languages (C++, Java, etc.) go back 100+ years to R&W.
Indeed he is, Raoul. Props on the attempt. Not beach reading, eh? haha
Totally agree that Lowe is vastly better than the average in sports writing. I became aware of him long ago when I asked in CtB something like “Are all sportswriters morons and ninnys?”. Someone (Ben?) answered no, check out Zach Lowe.
So Igoudala and David West want to join in on ranking journalists:

My concern with Cedi has more to do with Lue. I could see Lue sticking to his veteran players, and giving Cedi very little playing time, especially as we get closer to the playoffs.
Yes, I’m a fan of Zach Lowe as well. Both his writing and podcast.
Whatever the title of the column, always a great read, Ben. Thanks.
Great stuff, Ben!
Great piece. Am I crazy or does ESPN mostly suck now? Lowe is about the only thing worth reading there. Woj for news. The lists are absurd. Clickbait.
I’m no shrink, but you aren’t crazy…
BEN SUPERB WRITING ( LIKE A FINE WINE YOU GET BETTER )—-RANKINGS —WELL FLUSH THEM DOWN THE TOILET– ( RIGHT BUCKEYES )—WON’T EVEN LET MY ATHLETE’S LOOK AT THEIR RANKINGS OR OPPONENTS—-GIVE YOU EITHER “FALSE CONFIDENCE”—OR ” HYPED INTIMIDATION “—-LONZO BALL WILL BE A ” MARKED MAN—BIG TARGET ” ALL SEASON FOR ALL NBA PLAYERS —BETTER BE READY ROOKIE ———–GO TRIBE DO I HEAR # 21 !!!
Love the new name for the column. That ranking list is bizarre. TT is absurdly low. Seriously, Serge Ibaka is better? Marcus Smart? WTF?
Marcus Smart is probably the Simmons effect.
