Preseason Recap: Bulls 108, Cleveland 94 (or, Rust Never Sleeps)
2017-10-11https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=g5zELK-fW6M
Cleveland looked… rusty in their pre-season tuneup game. LeBron James played 30 minutes and scored 17, with five boards and three dimes, but turned it over eight times. Dwyane Wade added four turnovers of his own and he and Kevin Love combined to go 2-19. Kevin did chip in eight rebounds and a couple steals, but it was a rough start at center for Kevin.
Chicago looked to attack him immediately with Robin Lopez in the post, and they were rewarded for their persistence. Lopez finished with 10 points on 10 shots and dominated Love early. Kevin was just off all night and could never get in a rhythm offensively. The new starting five seemed pretty unfamiliar with each other. Too many alphas trying to figure it out…
The starters’ offense was spotty. The effects of Rose, Wade, LeBron, and Crowder sharing the floor were apparent early as the Bulls were content to crowd inside, and Rose and Wade were not used to flaring to the wings or corners to make lanes for the King. When they did flare, LeBron didn’t get it to them, either not trusting their shots, or just not being used to their spacing.
James looked fine, just a little off due to the ankle injury. 17/5/3 on 13 shots in 30 minutes. Nothing to worry about here. The starters just looked a little lethargic.
Fortunately, the bench looked electric in the second with Rose running the show. He and JR provided an energetic backcourt that combined for nine assists and only two turnovers. The highlight of the game clearly came in the second when Rose accelerated up the left side and threw a lob to the heavens which Jeff Green plundered from the clouds and dunked with a thunderous thump.
Green combined with Rose, Smith, Tristan and Kyle Korver to provide the Cavs’ most effective lineup. TT scored seven, grabbed 11 rebounds, added a block and a steal and finished +8 in 21 minutes. Green scored eight and was a team high +9. He looked good around the basket, though got a little lazy with his finishes in the second half. Korver’s shot looked better, even though he was 2-7. It had more arc and spin. J.R.S sshot a perplexing 0-6, but he had great energy and pushed the offense and was aggressive on D. I’m not worried about his shot.
Rose has a chance at a special season if he can stay healthy. He looks energized. Derrick finished with 13/5/5 on 5-9 shooting in 27 minutes. He attacked the basket, set up teammates, and shot well, even the offense was a little helter skelter. There’s more than an outside chance he’ll be a better point guard option than Isaiah Thomas. Even his three ball is looking good in pre-season, as Derrick himself noted yesterday. He drained a Curry-esque corner three on an LBJ drive safety valve pass. Keep that coming, DRose.
Iman Shumpert looks much leaner than last year, and I’m not just talking coif. He’s noticeably thinner, and seems quicker. The decision to make him the sixth man is still beyond dumb. When Shump hit’s a pull-up J, it’s pyrite. He starts being more aggressive and getting more tunnel vision before eventually dribbling into people and turning the ball over. He was only scored three turnovers. He should’ve had three. But Iman finished with 12 points on five shots in 11 minutes and was 2-2 from three. When he is catching and shooting, and filling the lane, and only engaging in two dribble drives, he’s good. He’ll never be a point guard.
Speaking of point guards, Dwyane Wade starting make no sense. He still has the ability to be a very good defender, and he can run an offense. But the Cavs now have three starters who are at their best when the offense starts in their hands. Wade’s post-ups also jam up the half-court o, at least with the starters. He also relied on that turnaround jumper too often. He needs to counter off that move. Wade, Crowder, LeBron, and Love all finished -18 or worse, and though much of it was due to rust and unfamiliarity, Wade just seems like he should be a bench guy at this point, and should rarely share the floor with Rose.
I get the theory, that you want Rose comfortable running the second unit, especially when Isaiah Thomas gets back. The bench is lit. But I’m not sure there’s any things that Wade does on offense that are all that special anymore that complement the King and dRose other than get in the way, especially with Crowder already in there as a cutter.
This game was about the rotation, but the deep bench got some run in the fourth, though notably, Channing Frye and R.J. did not. Only John Holland raised eyebrows for the Cavs. He didn’t hesitate on his two triple tries and swished them both.
For the Bulls, some intriguing youngins stood out. I noted that Jerian Grant had a sneaky good RPM last year, and it continued tonight as he just seemed competent running an offense. He couldn’t shoot (2-11), but finished a game high +21 with six boards, five dimes, two steals, and just two turnovers. Star of the night was Chicago’s wiry guard, Justin Holiday. Holiday was everywhere on the court at times, getting steals, layups, threes, rebounds. He finished with 28 and 11 boards on 72 TS%. He added six turnovers but was otherwise stellar.

Also standing out was seven-foot rookie Finn, Laurie Markennan. Laurie flashed a quick release on his J, canning 4-7 from three, ran the floor, dribble-drived, and swished from the post. He’s got the tools to be an offensive matchup nightmare.
Anyway, let’s hope the Cavs invest in some de-oxidation treatment before next week. We’ll get an extended look at the bench in the final pre-season game, Friday, in Orlando.
Every decision Francona made last postseason was money. Every decision made this postseason was the opposite of money.
yenom?
Yeah, he went full Jar Jar.
I hate sports.
The Indians had a 28 game winning streak with several regulars on the IR. These guys just made it back for the playoffs. Rather than sticking with the guys that won 28 straight and got us to the playoffs, Tito plays the guys just off the IR, who did very little, and took out Jackson, who has been near the best player all year. Playing Kipnis over Jackson in CF makes no sense at all. Jackson is a much better CF, and has hit better all year.
Yeah. But the entire FO has input on the post season roster. They bungled it and the players who got us here like Hernandez and Lindor and Santana all sucked.
Just a terrible performance by what is probably the best team in the AL.
Who is Hernandez?
all this time it should have been Carrasco making two starts
Well, can’t think of too many things I enjoy less than that…
Think about this: the only thing keeping us from a first round sweep was Jay Bruce
What a choke job by this team. I knew the Yankees were our biggest threat but still. Unforced errors. Kluber implosion. Lineup gaffes. If only we had lost two more regular season games we could have beat up the Red Sox.
7 errors the last two games !!
Incredible. Also not going to win without your three best hitters giving you anything (even tho Encarnacion was just for games 3 and 4)
That was the longest at bat I’ve ever seen.
I was hoping for a walk to bring the strike out king to the plate. Only good thing is I just saved $500 for two tickets to game one vs Houston.
Yankees beat us at our own game. Pitching and patience at the plate. hindsight says it was a mistake to roster the injured players: Chisenhall kipnis and Brantley.
Agree. I don’t know I’d the roster was all Tito’s decision, but imagine it was. This collapse is much worse than the Cubs given our deeper pitching staff.
6 outs left. We are in the Chapman zone.
Had a pitch to hit there for Jackson.
Tito has not had a good post season
You got that. Why hasn’t Jackson been playing CF? I think Tito cannot bring himself to hurt the feelings of the veteran players.
Lindor and Jose are now batting just over .100 collectively. Unbelievable.

The top of the order has been awful. Come on EE.
Come on JRam. Think double not HR.
The ump is killing us on those outside called strikes to lefties. Several inches off the plate. Makes the hitters change their approach once they get behind
DP. Damn. That first called strike was a foot outside.
3 straight hits. 1 in. Make it 4. 2 in. 2 on. Jackson, Bruce, Perez, & Urshela proving me wrong. I love it. Lindor up. CC out.
Back in it! Here we go
Needing some Rajai Davis type magic tonight
A disappointing end to a great year. This game is over. Kluber either is injured or he just got old in one week. I don’t see us scoring four runs with their bullpen rested
Do you remember Lindor’s slam against the pen.? Too soon to concede
Way to early. We get one run, the crowd will come into the game, things can change quick. Go Tribe!
Glad to have another positive person Simmo. I have to think though that Kluber has some type of injury.
Kluber just didn’t have it. What a mind F.
If this doesn’t turn around wonder how high the odds would have been for Kluber to lose twice in 5 games after going 18-4?
Missing location horribly. Pretty much the same fastball missed middle in to Gregorius both times.
Like I said previously, the Indians win streak probably came a month or 1.5 months too early. They’re going threw a slump, plus injuries at the wrong time.
Well if Kluber isn’t right, then they aren’t getting passed Houston anyways.
Well I’m probably calling it a night…
Cmon the Cavs were down 3-1 !
I was up at 4:30am this morning and flew in from Palm Springs via Denver. I really wanted to watch the game but this is horrid.
Deep trouble. 3-0 down. Gregorious again. Mayday.
Kluber has to be hurt to be this bad in two straight starts
That is the 4th guy to reach base after having two strikes. Thru 2 innings pitched. Not good.
Smolz so accurate and revealing describing how Kluber is off
He knows what he is talking about.

CC in control :(
We need a 10 hour thunder storm to shake things up.
Get a freaking hit!
Cannot get the 3rd out or 3rd strike. Though the interference is all on Perez. Whew! Got out of it.
EE, Santana, & Jackson gonna have to carry the offense. Lindor & JRam are broken.
What a jackass!
https://twitter.com/twithersAP/status/918271811925823490
What does that even mean???
It means Kyrie is a dick.
Yeah I hope he never wins squat again.
Agree with Arch and Jason!
Did something bad happen to him here? Were fans mean to him or something? Maybe he’s holding a grudge over the CtB Kyrie/Delly comparisons.
Klubot appears to be broken. May be time to put in Carrasco.
WTF?!?
Now Kluber is struggling to find the zone again.
Our hitting has disappeared. Can’t believe Linder and Ramirez. Both have swung at so many bad pitches
At least Ramirez made contact.
I am getting the same feeling tonight I had in the USA soccer game last night.
JRam 2/17 with HR swings.
Kipnis should not be in the 2 hole. Jackson should be. Bad move from Tito.
This team needs to go bowling.
Lindor is 1/14 this series. Brantley 1/15. JRam can’t be much better.
This team seems off.
Not a good start. Now the O will press. We’ve been behind the whole time since game 1.
Well that sucks
I wonder if that back is bother Kluber still.
Paul Haynes of the Plain Dealer has questioned in his column if Kluber is 100%. I wondered then if that is why Bauer started game one.
Damn it! Not the way you want to start.
Let’s Go Tribe!!!
THIS WEATHER MAY HELP KEEP THE BALL IN THE PARK—HOPE WE HAVE CY YOUNG KLUBER TONIGHT
Dick Goddard would be proud.

Nice. Is that you with the JR sign?
Yep worked out well
WOW THE MEDIA IS JUMPING ( BLOWN IT OUT OF PROPORTION ) ALL OVER THE J.R. COMMENTS
ARE THEY GOING TO PLAY (TRIBE ) TONIGHT —MAN WEATHER IS TERRIBLE—WOULD LIKE TO SEE IT CALLED
Go Tribe. I canmot believe Urshela at 3rd. I have lost faith in Tito. Jackson should be hitting 2nd. Put Allen in CF and hit him 9th.
Lindor, Jackson, JRam, EE, Santana, Bruce, Kipnis, Perez, Allen.
I understand keeping him in. You don’t want to make a panic move.
We cut Edy & signed a guard. Shump as 6th man is just silly. As is Wade starting.
Though th JR + Korver bench unit could be fun. Of course Lue was opposed to playing together last year. As if Ky, JR, Korver, James, Love was mot our best offensive lineup by a mile.
Shumpert at point guard is always an adventure, notwithstanding his good shooting last night. Wade could best serve by anchoring the second unit and have JR start the game . I am not even opposed to inserting back Thompson in the starting lineup and put Crowder as shooting guard where he has the tenacity to play against the James Hardens and Russell Westbrooks.
kluber better not suck toniugh

James missed practice and will sit out the final preseason game against Orlando. The first unit looked disorganized at best, and this sure doesn’t help. With the major overhaul to the starting five, time together is the only answer. The Akron Beacon Journal said LBJ re-aggravated his injured ankle last night. Not an auspicious start to the season.
The season hasn’t even started yet. Plenty of time between now and the Finals in June to figure out the rotations.
AM INCLINING TO GO ALONG WITH WADE OFF THE BENCH—WILL HIS EGO ALLOW THIS—DOES LEBRON NEED TO INTERVENE—-HOW DOES LEBRON FEEL ABOUT THIS —–IF ROSE CAN STAY HEALTHY / AND CONTINUE ON “HIS MISSION ” WOW WHAT A BARGAIN !!!!!——-BLOGGED LAST NIGHT ABOUT ANY TEAM WITH DECEN T BIGS ARE GOING TO GO RIGHT AT LOVE ……NO UNLIKE BELIEVELAND I AM NOT PUTTING HIM ON THE TRADE BLOCK UNLESS WE ARE TALKING EVEN UP FOR KAWH I OR A.D. WHICH WE ALL KNOW THAT ISN’T HAPPENING …….GO TRIBE !!

Ha! I’m pretty sure they will win the NBA title if he can shoot %75 from 3 for the season.
I think he’ll probably fall back to the mean of 30-something percent.
Not a 75% shooter but hard to tell if he’ll drop back to the low 30’s.
He was never a spot up 3pt shooter, always having to have the ball in his hands, working off the PnR and being the #1-2 option (i guess with the Knicks he was considered the 3rd), that the defense was on him. The two 3pt shots I saw him take yesterday, he was wide open. That will help tremendously.
I hope he can get the % up to the 40’s. Will be difficult but his shots looked correct, so now is all about practice.
Rose especially looks great.
They look awesome and ready
